    A lot of Wings fans have taken Berggren's "demotion" to the AHL last season as a sign that he's not good enough offensively to make up for his apparent inability to play defense, but I feel like they just don't remember how he looked in 22-23. There's a reason the team kept him up for 67 games that season, and I think he was only in the AHL this past season because there was no room for him and Yzerman thought he'd be better off helping the Griffins get to the playoffs. And he was great. I think he has top 6 potential in the NHL and I'm rooting for him to surprise everyone.

    I suspect multiple players in Chicago will have break-outs. I wouldn't be surprised if even Lukas Reichel winds up having the one he was expected to have last season. All the injuries and other unexpected personnel changes forced him into more responsibilities than he was ready to take on. With the vastly-improved roster, it will take pressure off of him, and as with Bedard, he'll now have guys around him who will help him more than they will hinder him.

    As a Caps fan I would have Hendrix Lapierre over Protas, as he has had an amazing 2nd half of last season winning the AHL playoffs MVP and playing great for Washington. I think Lapierre is probably gonna play consistent top 6 minutes and at least a 2nd PP, while Protas is probably gonna get thrown up and down the lineup because he’s the kinda player you can play on every line and is less flashy. But that’s what’s exciting about the Caps right now, it could be Lapierre, McMichael, Protas, Sandin, Fehervary, Frank, Miroshnichenko if he plays in the NHL or even Logan Thompson I could see reaching a new level if he wins the starter job

      I agree. I think Protas is going to get 30-40 points, and Lapierre probably 45-60 points.
      Protas is a lot better on defense, and he should get a lot of time on the penalty kill, whereas Lapierre should get power play time. Both types of guys are needed for a team, but Lapierre should definitely outscore Protas.
      The ironic thing about Protas is that my two biggest complaints about him are his lack of a scoring touch and his lack of big hits - the two things that Ovechkin does best. He's better than Ovechkin at passing and defense, but Ovechkin is better at hitting and scoring. I am not convinced that Protas will find a scoring touch this year. I do think he'll score about 8-10 goals this year, but I don't think he'll turn into a 15+ goal scorer.

    • @Mcbikey24
      @Mcbikey24 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@gabrielrockman Protas could’ve scored 20 last year but his finishing was absolutely poor, but maybe that was just him being unlucky and this year he will break through. But he definitely isn’t a better passer than Ovechkin lmao yes Ovechkin is a goalscorer but his passing is actually very underrated. He is very good at it but people for obvious reasons mention other things

    • @gabrielrockman
      @gabrielrockman 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Mcbikey24 It didn't seem like bad luck on finishing. It seemed like he just wasn't good at finishing. He was good at getting the opportunities, but it didn't feel like goalies were making great saves or that he was hitting posts. It just felt like he wasn't good at finishing.
      I do think he's a better passer than Ovechkin is. I think Ovechkin is helped by how much people expect him to shoot. I think Protas did pretty well last year making McMichael and Mantha look good with his passes. I genuinely think that Protas could get 30 assists as a third liner with no power play time. I don't think that Ovechkin could do that. Ovechkin isn't horrible at passing: I'd consider him average. But I consider Protas to be slightly above average at passing.

      @@Sharlez123 I wouldnt do that trade 1 for 1 even now. I heard from someone that the sharks asked for him and NJ said no and offered someone else.
      The NJ GM really really wanted Timo. Mercer is a nice player but I would still rather have a healthy Timo. Granted Mercer is way cheaper and the sharks can lose with anyone.
      Zetterlund and the 1st round pick / Musty was a decent return even without anything else. The sharks can trade him and Musty to anyone. It would have obviously been nice to get Mercer too but NJ added way more to the deal to compensate for him.
      At the end of the day the sharks are rebuilding and might have to trade Zetterlund and Musty the same way they traded Timo once they get expensive. If Mercer was a shark the team still is not good enough which is the same reason Timo had to go with his new contract you gave him. It will be interesting what Mercer will make in his new contract.

      Yes, the actual return for Timo is better for the Sharks than just Mercer (probably)
      Timo would have been gone in free agency now if he was kept in San Jose (unless massive overpay).
      Mercer will most likely sign a shorter bridge 2-3 years within what is left of the cap. When that deal expires he can cash in properly if he doesn't regress

    I don't mind the Kochetkov pick for Carolina, but I do think there are some other options in play. Seth Jarvis is primed to get top line minutes in order to justify whatever his shiny new contract is, plus another year of development. Idk if you'd call it "breakthrough" but he could take a huge step forward. Similar for Jalen Chatfield... with the exits of Skjei and Pesce, there's a strong possibility that he plays RHD on the 2nd pair, or even 1st pair if they decide Burns needs to be limited throughout the season.
    Also, I know it feels like a veteran lineup right now, but they have 3-4 rookies who could push for a roster spot. I wouldn't be surprised if one of them makes it, especially given Tulsky's comments a couple weeks ago about opportunities for young players to fill key roles. Bradly Nadeau, Jackson Blake, Felix Unger Sorum, and Scott Morrow are all on the fringe of making this roster going into training camp. Clearly they won't ALL make it, but it wouldn't be entirely shocking if one of them did. Especially if Jesper Fast can't return.
