My husband and I may be buying a Vancouver Special. We much prefer the look of "character" houses, especially Arts and Crafts bungalows, but I use a walker and can't manage stairs, and these houses can be quite cramped for me. We think the Vancouver Specials are much better for me with my disability. Just add a stair lift, and some grip bars here and there, and I'm good to go. I'd love to see a Vancouver Special made to look more "character." I'm busy brainstorming how to do that, and I'm finding it difficult.

Hi Charlotte, thank you for sharing your thoughts with me. I find that even with the layout being similar with most Vancouver Special, some of the interior 'character' are quite different from houses to houses. It depends on if it had some work done in the past or the original builder built them in such way. I find Arts and Crafts bungalows has a distinctive style of trims and molding, which are around windows, doors, fireplace surround and millwork. There are certainly other ways to add more 'character', but it depends on how much work/renovation you want to do. If you have any other questions, you are welcome to send me an email. 📧[e-mail]
