- Two teenagers visit their memories.
THE LAKE IN THE SKY is used with permission from Caleb Reese Paul. Learn more at thelakeinthesk....
Warren is an isolated teenager who spends most of his time at a cabin in the woods. But he has access to a remarkable machine he calls "Nostalgia." With it, he can revisit memories, putting himself back in that time and space as if he were there. Using the machine, he revisits memories of his late father.
One day he meets Sarah, another teenager who recently lost her friend. He shows Sarah the machine, allowing her to revisit her late friend, who died in an accident. But when the machine goes wrong, the pair realize the limits of nostalgia.
Directed and written by Caleb Reese Paul, who also plays Warren, this thoughtful, intriguing short drama explores the intersection between memories and emotional growth. The journeys of Warren and Sarah pose questions about the fine line between being stuck in the past and holding it dear, as the two teens learn to balance the allure of the past while facing the tenuousness of a future that moves forward without their loved ones by their side.
Ambitious in its writing and thematic reach, the storytelling has a textured, almost impressionistic register, layering dreamlike images of the past and the imagination, Warren's thoughts about time and experience and a pensive, evocative musical score. It opens with a montage of reverie and reflection that sets up the thematic terrain of the narrative before setting up the main storyline, as Warren and Sarah meet at the lake in an almost fairytale-like way, by simply arriving at one another. As played by actors Paul and Maxine Wanderer, Warren and Sarah are stunted in their present from their grief for their lost loved ones; Warren is locked away in his own sphere and Sarah is rawer and angrier about her more recent loss.
Their storyline develops and the machine is introduced, an almost Spielbergian streak seeps into the film, epitomized by the machine, which has an improvised, handmade feel but a palpable magic. The film takes time to set up its themes and moods, but it picks up momentum when Sarah uses the machine to revisit her last memory with her late friend. She can't help but break the rules that govern the machine, which begins to malfunction in the reality that they've left. Warren and Sarah have to untangle themselves from the past, but as they try to piece together what's happening, the nostalgia machine goes haywire, putting them in peril.
THE LAKE IN THE SKY ends on a subtle cliffhanger, but more importantly, it asks one final question, revealing the film to be a meditation on identity, memory and being shaped by the past. There's a hermetic quality to the narrative's sense of place, capturing the sense of being dreamily disconnected from a larger world, and perhaps from unruly, ungovernable life itself. Yet we can see the temptation in retreating from life and taking refuge in the past -- though as Warren and Sarah eventually learn, there's a danger in losing ourselves entirely in it.
Hi all! Caleb here - I'm the Writer/Director/Producer/Editor (and also actor) of this short. Thanks so much for taking the time to watch my film! Feel free to let me know your thoughts. Happy to answer any questions!
Hey Caleb.
Am also a film maker. Great work I have to say 😊
Question, how long did it take you to film everything?
@@Wala_b.photography Thanks! I wrote the script for about 9 months, and we had about 2 weeks of prep for a 6 day shoot. Then we were in post-production for 3 months to edit/mix/color grade/etc.
Nice man. Keep it up.
Caleb & team, thanks for sharing your creation with us. I was a little bit confused, but I appreciated the lighting and camera work.
Thank you. You leave me wondering what I just watched, and if I liked it.
Extraordinary. Riveting. Mark these words. Caleb Reese Paul will be among the great filmmakers of his generation.
This was amazing! It had my attention from the first moment you jumped into the lake. I've done the same thing, cold lakes can be bracing and I'd occasionally jump in to clear my head. Her pelting you with gravel was brilliant! "Move or get hit!". love that! I look forward to seeing and hearing more from you.
Major talent here! This is an absolute masterpiece. Story, the chemistry, the colors and textures. Nostalgic even for a stranger. Beautiful. All the best to you.💡✨
This is really good and I love how they can make a feeling into a film.
Very Christopher Nolan-esque, trippy & leaving you wondering "wtf did I just watch?"!! Good stuff.
What a lovely short film, beautifully shot and acted, love the story. When I write my stories, short or novels, I always see them as small films and this is the kind of film I like to see, well done.
fantastic film! This short film has so much subtelty and atmosphere without any hint of being "invented" .. it's totally natural and yet leaves something to the imagination as it should. In short it is brilliant! I loved it and also the music really helped to create the atmosphere....👍👁🎥 Bravo!! Sensational....
Caleb, this is brilliant! The vintage technologies - VHS tapes, etc. - were a sweet touch. Great film. Thank you! ❤
P.S. The video description is one of the best that I have read on this channel. 👍👍
WOW! What a fantastic film. Mesmerising. I love the set and all the details and the style and retro aspect. The cast and acting, lighting and camera. All of it. Just perfect! But now I want more
Thank you so much! The film is a proof-of-concept for a feature. So stay tuned for more!
@@calebreesepaul OH AWESOME!!! CAN'T WAIT
Really impressive work -- by a filmmaker my own age, which blows my mind. Keep up the good work Caleb! I think you're going to be the George Lucas of our generation.
Caleb, Amazing I love short movies definitely capture my attention for the entire time, brilliant 👏👏👏👏 thank you.

Tons of options to go on with it Caleb.

Queensryche: Silent Lucidity - set to motion.
As a composer, I'd be interested to hear about your process for designing/creating the music in your film.
A shoutout is in order to our amazing composer, Dean McGinnes! Dean and I started with a spotting session and temps. I told him what I wanted, and we worked for about 3-4 weeks on the score. I'm very happy with the score. You can stream it on Spotify if you want hear just the music!
Nostalgia contains illusion.
Let's make set lighting great again!
And scripts!!
That was good 👍
I really loved the concept but I don’t understand at all what happened. What DID he do? What was the significance of her being in his memory watching him get the camcorder as a gift? Can someone enlighten me? Thanks
I'd love to know, too.

Thanks for watching!! As well as being a proof-of-concept for a feature, I designed this film to be a sort of "choose-your-own adventure" for viewers - so each audience member can take away something different philosophically from the ending of the film. Sarah, after learning about the machine, can't help but want to go back into the memory of her friend's death. In doing this, she tries to change it, causing the memory to leak over into the real world, malfunctioning the machine, and thrusting her and Warren into his most hidden memory: his dad's death. At the end, Warren's memories go up in flames, and she throws the tape of her memory into the fire.
Some of that is my interpretation! Everyone will take something different away from the ending sequence, so no one way is "correct." There are some hints subtly dispersed throughout the film to support a certain storyline (i.e. the photo of his dad giving him the camcorder as a gift is labeled "last photo" and is burned at the edges from fire, and Warren's tape recording of that memory has a scratched off label, flashing on screen when he's underwater) - so I highly recommend giving it another watch or two if you'd like! Most people will get a lot more out of it the 2nd or third time around - I tried to have high rewatch value to reward those who were interested!

I’m sorry but she made me so mad … she ruined it all for him! How selfish
He didn't take the time to explain the seriousness of trying to change things in the memory.
Thus, she cannot take all the blame.
@ he did say it can’t mingle practically .. even I knew that
Not my cup of tea this one, but well shot never the less.
Liked it, but did not understand it.
It's a story of two people pretending to be what they aren't. It could have been understandable to a certain point.
Thanks for watching! I replied to a comment above from @maryherl3573 that answers a few questions if you're curious.

Oh goodness, another movie that leaves it open to interpretation. I don't wanna rack my brain trying to figure out someone elses work. I got enough sh** to figure out in life.
I think someone grew up watching "Stranger Things"
well stranger things grew up with stephen king stories.
