The Pleasure-way Plateau FL is one of the highest quality class b camper vans that you can buy. As reviewed it costs $140k but it gives you a very appealing and functional layout in a quality-built package. The rear sofa bed configuration makes both a great lounge and a great bed. It's only disadvantage is that the bedroom isn't permanent. But the FL also gives you a beautiful front lounge complete with a pedestal table for two and a workstation for the driver. The galley in the FL features one of the longest counters in any class b at 6 feet in length. Plus there's loads of storage. One of the best standard features on the FL is its 200ah of lithium batteries and a 2000 watt inverter. Taken together this means that you can run your microwave and other power hungry AC appliances off the batteries without needing to start your generator. With Automatic Generator Start (AGS) you can program your generator to start automatically to run your rooftop air conditioner or simply to recharge your lithium batteries. Taken together with its 5 year warranty the $140k price tag doesn't seem so high.
The Winnebago Era 70a has a lot to offer. For starters it's $40k less expensive than the Plateau. Additionally, it's got a permanent rear bed configuration with comfortable beds and lots of storage underneath. The bathroom in the Era is small but no smaller than the FL's and it is higher quality with a stainless sink and residential faucet. If only we could stop there the Era would beat the Plateau but we have to talk about the front lounge. It is a disaster with a small jumpseat that barely fits 2 and doesn't have proper 3-pt seat belts and an awkward design for a pedestal table. The worst design however is the 24inch LCD TV's placement directly in the middle of the kitchen counter. It renders a lot of the kitchen workspace useless. Also, the quality of the Era is lacking. I found stick framing and staples holding cabinets together and a window shade came off its bracket when I tried to pull the shade down. These quality problems are only compounded when considering the lackluster 1 year coach warranty that Winnebago offers on the Era.
At the end of the day, price isn't always everything. No amount of money will ever fix the il-conceived lounge on the Era. And saving $40k doesn't mean much if you're having to take your rig in for repairs more often than you'd like AND having to pay for those repairs. If Winnebago could address the front lounge on the Era and give buyers peace of mind with a longer warranty then the 70a could really give the Plateau FL a run for its money. But as it stands the FL is your better buy and is today's winner.
