She really just didn’t want to be on vacation with them. I get that she was rude sometimes, but it was supposed to be her downtime and she ended up spending it around people she just didn’t relate to or like very much.
I honestly relate to Harper (yes that might be a bad sign, I know). Some parts I don't, but for the most part, I understood that it's the context that drives her into being such a bitter, unlikable person. The failing marriage, her husband losing attraction towards her... these are actually very sad and painful for someone who care deeply, but it can be so hard to talk about (especially Ethan keeps pretending everything is fine, "he's just too busy" etc.) And so she channeled that into anger and resentment. She makes comments to kill the vibe of the group. She judges Daphne and Cameron behind, all because she is jealous inside, refusing to believe they are truly a happy couple - it has to be facade; or they are just so stupid so they can be happy. If she behaves like that when her relationship is fine then yes she is naturally a bitch. But in this context, it's more understandable. Not a very good personality, but I feel for her.
I think we all know a Daphne and Harper, just like a Cameron and Ethan. In my life I think it was my mom was a Harper light when younger while my aunt--my dad's sister in law--played the Daphne character. My mom was always very critical of my aunt and her family about them casually boasting about their family accomplishments--and it helped they had some wealth. My aunt also had that light auburn, reddish hair. My mom had dark brown hair just like Harper. My aunt is also a social butterfly, bubbly, friendly, somewhat carefree (became a housewife) and attending every party she could--didn't really talk deeply about serious issues. My mom was social too but not to the same degree. She was more practical and was a working woman. Cameron is really any straight man in his 20s. Ethan is really almost any successful college grad Asian man.
@Big Tuna I did it merely because of pure uncanny coincidence how the characters personalities and rough look line up in real life in my family. Of course hair colors don't have to match up in real life to know you know both of these personalities. Thankfully though that's where the similarities with characters ends. My dad and his brother were never competitive like the guys, and my mom and aunt were more level headed at the end of the day.
Harper was so unbearable to me. Which is ironic considering I definitely have more in common with her and Ethan in terms of social issues. But I couldn’t stand her constant condescending tone. Like lighten up girl! You’re in Italy on vacation!
I could understand, she didn’t have the greatest attitude but as the show goes on we get to fully understand why she acts the way she does. She did phenomenal!
I was rooting for her. I think the increasing lack of passion combined with her new money status via Ethan made her feel like her position as his wife was precarious. Ethan also lied first and kissed Mia so I enjoyed her manipulating him into spiralling. She was being mean and judgemental out of insecurity. She is just the type that needs to actively foster her own joy and choose to vibrate high when she isn't working.
@@noobatron2663 everyone has flaws. Her flaws don’t seem to be so depicted that much in other media. Yes she’s condescending and intolerant but that does come from a place that’s at least a little justified. And yes she’s critical and insecure but that’s a trait she shares with everyone
I think Harper was an amazing character, I don't think she cheated she hated him and all he represented. She wanted her husband to have sex with her... My god. Yes she was incredibly sadistic to her husband. Being nice to him and trying to talk to him wasn't getting anywhere.
Sadistic? She was, quite reasonably, disappointed with her husband, but stayed with him in the hope that things would return to a better state. I thought she was pretty restrained with Ethan, given where they were in their relaitonship. She just wasn’t going to stand for even less from him.
Harper was definitely a complex character. I liked her very much at the beginning of the series but she showed a very different side toward the end through her active 50/50 involvement with Cameron, all the while rubbing her husband's face i it and making him feel like the fool. I thought that that she was downright sadistic toward him and , given all of the factors and details of her behavior toward Cameron from the morning she saw Ethan talking to the hookers, she definitely had sex of some sort with him in the room. Look at her facial expressions toward Cameron in virtually every scene after seeing the hookers--constant flirting and approval of his fondling her under the table. Then there were the constant strings of lies toward her husband ( the same as Cameron 's) with her seemingly enjoying his pain. All of this was behavior was portrayed sooo realistically by Aubrey Plaza's superb acting--she really seemed like someone who was lying.

All in all, I enjoyed this season probably more than the first and can't wait to see what the creator has in store for us in season 3 (hopefully)!
I mean you have to look at it from her side, it's no wonder she thought he cheated and lied about bc everything was indicating he did with his constant trickle truthing. She only cheated with Cameron to get back at Ethan for the cheating she believed he did, but then Ethan did the same exact thing with Daphne. He was convinced Harper was unfaithful so he coped with it by imitating Cameron & Daphne's toxic back and forth of punishing each other for their respective transgressions without ever communicating honestly about them.
