You don't, you are free to go around the canals. We were lucky that there are not much others on the canals this time of year compared to the summer when it can get very crowded. Sadly for the interesting historica detail its iligal to own monkeys in the Netherlands, but since this year dwarf hamsters and chinchillas are also iligal.
