I've made at least 4 or more of these, 2 in leather, 2 in canvas. I have always used thin calf-skin as I have been able to source it more easily than goatskin. Two of the bags of this type I have made have even journeyed to the Netherlands (Groenlo) from the USA. :D
Calf-skin also works perfectly. coincidentally but probably unsurprisingly me and my group will be in Groenlo in october for the battle of Groll re-enactment
I certainly made one, though an altogether different pattern; Bottom and one side sewn shut, (so effectively an L shaped seam overall), with the strap being sewn to the top and bottom ends of the fold-side, meeting in the middle with a buckle to adjust length. A jute cord keeping the opening tied shut. I will however, make another, larger one, as I'm unhappy with the current one. Although it's done the job just fine up until now.
Great piece!
Thank you john
I need to make a new one.

I think it originated an offshoot of the arrow quiver. The idea is similar, a tube you put things in.
The drawing of the knapsack with the round bottom implies some kind of thickness. Maybe a wooden disc?
Posible but without more evidence not anything that can be confermed
