What makes this worse is that these should be the default versions. They are the ones that should be most readily available.
It was certainly not made clear enough that they would become so unattainable so soon. People were effectively penalised for not having enough disposable income to be able buy them straight away.

According to Andrew at Parlogram, Apple lost money on the Mono Box. They know there's demand now. That's why they included the mono mix of Revolver in the box set. Hopefully, they continue doing that. If they ever repressed the mono box I don't think it would be until well after they've completed the remixes and used the mono albums as a selling point.

You’re overlooking the law of supply of demand. One reason they’re so expensive is its rarity. They wouldn’t be asking $1500-$2000 for 13 records that would be in the mono box. That would mean they would be asking over $100 for each LP. The LPs are only expensive now because they were limited in quantity. The 2012 stereo equivalents are much cheaper because of the quantities available.

Thankfully I have found UK mono pressings in VG+/EX- condition in the intervening years for good prices.

Look, I’m fine with this box remaining an aspirational collector’s item. It was a huge undertaking to master these in all analogue and the stampers wore out. But for god’s sake, it shouldn’t be as hard as it is to hear the Beatles in mono. At the very least, reissue the CD set and make the mono albums available separately on vinyl for £20 a pop at most, I don’t care if they have to cut it digitally. As it stands, you have to hunt down a CD set that isn’t a bootleg, or a beat up original/1981 repress mono for each album.

As far as I know, EMI/Apple manufactured 50.000 copies of this box worldwide, but they made no profit from it. So a re-release will not happen. I'm glad I bought it on release in 2014. They sound great but 1960's originals sound even better. The book included in the box is fantastic with pictures of tape boxes and studio documents. Unfortunately, two mono tracks officially released in the 1960's are not included in the box; Tomorrow Never Knows (mono remix 11, only on the first few days pressings of UK mono Revolver, all others have remix 8) and US Capitol's promo single version of Penny Lane with the trumpet ending. These two combined could make a great Record Store Day single some day. But that would probably never happen.

Oh they'll re-release the mono boxset on vinyl, it just won't be off the original analogue masters, there'll be digital pressings. The Analogue masters, with the unrelenting passage of time, have become pretty fragile. They'll most likely never see another pressing.

Very well stated. I've been collecting vinyl for close to 50 years & these boxes sat for a long time with all the rest of audiophile releases. I never thought we would see the rebirth, let alone the current vinyl rage. High end 2 channel was dieing a slow death but then came the rebirth of high end headphones which ultimately developed into the interest in 2 channel with the renewed interest in analog, thank you to the millennials! The only real future issue I see developing is the people building high end cartridges are aging out with so few going into the industry. Take Peter from Soundsmith, a truly gifted engineer, once he is gone I don't know of anybody that could fill his shoes. BTW, the 82 Jpn red wax monos are equally as spectacular. As you said, they tipped their hand when they didn't use the analog tapes for the Let It Be reissue, pretty disrespectful to the band & their fans.

We will see another Mono box, but in another 30 years. By then it won’t matter to most of us as far as sound is concerned because we’ll be either dead or reached an age where we can’t hear beyond 12Khz. Unfortunately Apple takes forever to release material from the vaults. This is why the much maligned bootlegs are the true treasures as they provide the fan with stuff they’ve been craving for. Apple missed out on billions of dollars in profits due to their own stupidity.

Agree! A Stereo analogue box (or even standalone editions) would be awesome! Then again; there are loads of albums which would fit perfect into the UHQR or One Step format (Velvet Underground, Queen, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie). There are a lot of classic albums that would really improve from this approach.

  • @kgeo753

Hopefully, they will continue packaging the mono albums with the remix box sets as they did with Revolver. People are paying more for individual mono pressings than the price of the remix box sets and Apple knows it. That still leaves the issue of The White Album and Sgt. Pepper's. They could do a limited run of 60th-anniversary editions of those two albums, include the mono albums, and sell every one they produce.

This guy nailed it. Revolver box shows the way forward for Apple. The mono LPs will be an incentive to buy the boxes for all the early albums. Wish Sgt Pepper had a mono LP in the box, but that seems to have been the prototype, because it also has the mishandling of Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane. Would have been great if it also had an ep release like Revolver with the Mono and Remaster.

The original Mono Box actually lost money for Apple/Universal. Universal has put their vinyl prices through the roof in the last couple of years (2-Disc Imagine was atound $60 CDN, so was Working Class Hero…POB was around 100. Original 1-disc Beatles were around $30, and are now around $50. One can only imagine what even single album versions of mono reissues would go for now. Straight up Reissues would only devalue what the original 200g monos are going for today…

I guess you are right about Apple/Universal losing money over the box. But a devaluation of the 2014 mono editions would not be a problem for them. (Because they are not making money for what the 2014 mono’s are doing on Ebay/Discogs/Amazon). I guess devaluation of the album and not being able to get proper momentum for a (re) release is a much bigger fear for Apple/Universal.

Yellow Submarine Songtrack as gorgeus as it is my only tweak would be change the tracklist sequence in order to match with the songs as how they appear in the movie.

I don't think old compilations and Yellow Submarine are big sellers for todays market (I think the compilation market has changed with the coming of digital music).
For the live recordings; there are not a lot of good Beatles live redcordings available. I have the Hamburg show and the Hollywood Bowl show and it's mostly a lot of noice. I really think that's a pity and I hope they will one day release the Apple Rooftop all analogue.

    • @top5records796
      @top5records796  2 ปีที่แล้ว

Well they just might. To be quite frank I think the next year will be very important in finding out what their tactics will be for the coming years with The Beatles-catalogue. With the 50th anniversary editions you might expect they’d jump the bandwagon of going all-analogue, but they didn’t do that. We also have reason to believe that someone is being very protective with regards to the original masters leaving the faults; for example, most of the MFSL-editions weren’t even from the mastertapes.
But doing single represses of (some) of these 2014 mono versions might be an obvious way to go. Does leave the question; why didn’t we get them when when The White Album and Sgt. Peppers had their anniversary?
So Apple Records doesn’t go for the obvious route (almost everybody expected a repress of Let it Be…Naked last year. this one goes for about 200,- online). But they didn’t include it. Let’s hope for the best but I’m afraid they have pointed their arrows at new mixes, remasters and demos.
But I truly hope I’m wrong.

I get where you’re coming from but on the other hand, those single album box sets are all about the extras so the market for those are your big Beatles fans, the single album anniversary editions are for those that don’t care about audiophile quality and just want to own the albums and build their Beatles collection. But right now there is a big market for audiophile records that keeps growing. If Apple and the estates of each Beatle aren’t recognizing this growing market than they aren’t paying attention. They could have their cake and eat it too. Right now there are enough people in each level of the market to keep the anniversary edition reissues going and put out an all analog box set. If they did another release of the Mono box I bet they could sell 10,000 in a few weeks if not a week. I bet you the new price for the box set would be double what they originally sold it for which would not appeal to most of your new collectors and all the collectors that don’t care about audiophile vinyl. I think a good price point would be between $700-$900 dollars. And I would buy it!

This dispute is largely a result of an artificially created hype. If you listen to Day Tripper/We Can Work It Out in stereo US you won't want the mono versions anymore. Many Beatles albums sound better in stereo. And if you don't like wide panning, there's an equalizer for that.

Are you basing this solely on the Day Tripper/We Can Work It Out single? I can not understand why you would call this a created hype. There are loads of accounts on which people have stated the differences between the differences in songs in mono and stereo, going as far as different edits and takes being used (let alone the difference in mixing). It is simply a fact that until Magical Mystery Tour the stereo mix would not get the same amount of attention as the mono mix. In a lot of times it would not even get a fifth of the time the mono mix would get. Most often being made in the absence of the artists. I can name loads of albums on which the attitude and meaning of a record is different on the stereo or the mono version. No hype, anyone can hear it.
