Tirta Empul Temple, located near the town of Tampaksiring in Bali, Indonesia, is a significant Hindu Balinese water temple renowned for its holy spring water. This temple is a place where Balinese Hindus participate in a purification ritual known as Melukat. The temple's sacred pond is fed by a spring that continuously supplies fresh water, considered holy or amritha by the Balinese Hindus. The name "Tirta Empul" translates to "Holy Spring" in Balinese.
Founded around 962 A.D. during the Warmadewa dynasty, the temple is built around a large water spring and is divided into three main sections: Jaba Pura (front yard), Jaba Tengah (central yard), and Jeroan (inner yard). Jaba Tengah features two pools with 30 showers, each named for specific purification purposes. The temple is dedicated to Vishnu, symbolizing the supreme consciousness Narayana. A modern villa was constructed on a hill overlooking the temple for President Sukarno's visit in 1954, which now serves as a rest house for important guests.
Despite being a source of clean water for ritual bathing for most of its history, a 2017 report highlighted concerns over water pollution and health risks at Tirta Empul, prompting investigations into the water quality standards by local authorities.
