  • Following the advice of an app/website called All Trails (www.alltrails.com) I ran the Jeep up to Montgomery county in the Sam Houston National Forest to look for an OHV (Off Highway Vehicle ie ATV's, dirt bikes, 4x4's etc) trail in or near Kelly Pond Loop Rd. www.alltrails.com/trail/us/te... Turns out I DID find a trail that I ended up going down, but it was made for ATV's or smaller vehicles! I have an OHV sticker, and OHV trails are normally for anything up to an including full size 4x4's, like Jeeps. #Jeeproad

You know the game warden will seize your rig if he sees you on those atv trails. They are not for cars, but vehicles under 50" wide. You also need a pass and ohv sticker.

I was curious about that place. Thanks for your sacrifice and video as you saved me a waste of time👍

The street legal vehicles sign does mean that it is "for" street legal vehicles only. OHV trails just means off highway vehicle, like something you trailered in, it does not mean Jeep trail tho often if you fit its fine. You can usually tell if it’s a single track it’s for bikes, look for dual tracks that are wide enough for a Jeep, some dual tracks have width limits, they are meant for quads not Jeep’s. That’s why the bridge was so narrow. National forest usually has a sign with a Jeep for Jeep trails. Try benchmark state maps (paper map) they show designated 4x4 trails and label them. I hear there is not much available in Texas tho sadly.

Those signs at SHNF mean you can't ride dirt bikes/ATV/sxs on the forest roads. Kelly's Pond and most of the other trails here are for OHV under 50" width only. There are no fullsize vehicle trails here; dirt service roads only. You are absolutely not supposed tondrive a jeep here. I'm surprised you didn't run into any bikes and start a riot.

The otherside of 1375 has a couple of hidden trails. Cheese burger loop is a good start too.

Your best bet for a Loop/Trail that's sadly only 75% unpaved would be the Cheeseburger Loop. it's 168 Miles total.

I've heard about that before. I'll have to google that route and give it a try! Thanks!

Glad a forest ranger didn’t see you. Those are designated 40” trails. Max width of 40” vehicles allowed on the trails. Be careful. I’m sure you know of hidden falls adventure park by now. If not, that is a great place to take the jeep

The poster of this video is extremely lucky he didn't get ticketed by the park rangers there. That's federal property and the tickets are outrageous. Most of the trails have been closed from all the serious weather the Houston region has had, so you need to call the ranger office to see if you're even allowed to be out there. Also, it is illegal to ride an ATV on those trails without an ATV license. To ride a dirt bike out there you need an OHV sticker and to pay for either a year pass, or pay at the drop box at the trail head.

I was thinking the same thing...it's an expensive ticket too!

Having spent the last thirty years camping, dirt biking, hiking in the Sam Houston National Forest... I can tell you that for rangers are very few and far between. They primarily focus on off-road vehicles riding on the forest Service Roads, which is illegal unless they are street legal bikes. Rangers never get off road onto the trails.

I have rode my dirt bike out there for 30 years. I have never seen a park ranger giving ticket to anyone on a single track trail. I certainly have never gotten a ticket for not having a "OHV" sticker. But that guy in the jeep is probably going to get his ass into trouble trying to do off road jeep bullshiiite out there. Most of those trail are for 4 wheelers and dirt bikes.

Yep, Texas is kinda shy of off road opportunity. I put together a Suzuki Samurai and can't find much to do with it. May tow it to New Mexico and hit the mountains and desert

I've ridden those trails on my Kawasaki KLR 650 dual sport. They are too narrow for a Jeep but they're also too sandy for a heavy dual sport 😬

So better suited for SxS and 4 wheelers?

    • @jelicoe

I went last weekend for the first time on the zebra trail. It was too sandy (3") and wiggly for me and my KLR. The small dirt bike guys were doing great. Which trails do you recommend for a klr?

    • @theoriginaldashriprock
      @theoriginaldashriprock 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@FlawleZ31 No, the multi-use trails in the Sam Houston National Forest are not wide enough for four-wheelers. Dirt bikes and horses are pretty much it.

You could have made it over the bridge bro. One side on the handrail and articulate across that thing.. just kidding. It looked like a cool little trail till you dead ended at the bridge, something to do anyway. We are very limited on good trails around Houston.

It was fun even if it was ultimately a dead end for me. The whole reason I have a 4x4 is for that sense of adventure that comes from exploring. sounds corny, but it's the journey, not the destination, for me. LOL

Thanks for the great video! I plan to go check out Sam Houston Nat. Forest as well. Have you found any other areas to go wheeling? I am in Palestine, TX and I have a 2000 Pathfinder 4WD and I am looking for offroading places just like you are. I prefer more overlanding than hardcore offroading. Have you tried General Sam's park? Are there any areas you have found that you like? Others please comment as well.

I live in the Houston area also, we just picked up a gladiator, can you recommend any locations within a couple hours for us to visit. Nothing too crazy just want to get some dirt on the wheels.

Hidden Falls 4x4 park is near Austin. Probably the best option. But highway 90 east near Crosby has some publicly accessible "trails" mostly mud holes. You could go to Sargent beach. See my video on that for directions and stuff
