Devil's River - The Most Beautiful in the State of Texas.

  • The Devil's River, fed by numerous springs, is clear and cool as it flows through the eastern edge of the west Texas desert region. This is a great area for explorers and nature lovers. You can spend the day fishing, hiking (off-trail hiking allowed) , swimming, or going for casual kayaking along the park boundary between Finegan Springs and Dolan Falls. More adventurous folks can head upstream for a more challenging kayak journey (permit required).

How on earth have I missed this place?! I grew up near Kerrville, and was a HUGE river rat. My buddies and I used to get my dad's maps (he was in the oil business), and find all the back dirt roads that led to interesting, beautiful and fun swimming spots that haven't been over run by tourists OR locals. We spent endless summer days road tripping to the Llano River up towards Mason (found a GREAT cliff diving spot!), or the Frio, or of course the Guadalupe... Any number of places, going a couple hundred miles or more.
And yet, I don't recall, admittedly in my older age, the spot in THIS video!

Devil's River is the purest water in all the state of Texas. When I was there a ranger alerted me to the fact a cougar had recently made a kill near the river and trail. It had covered the remains over with debris. Another hiker had spotted the cover up. Had me on high alert as I was hiking. The water was absolutely perfect. Turquois in color. I captured many a good photos during my trip of the area. Camping was fantastic. The camp sites are like a mile apart, so no one bothers you. So beautiful. Thanks for sharing; subbed. I lived in Arizona just out of college (in Maine!) And miss the sunshine and culture of the southwest. My dad grew up in El Paso and Gillespie County and spoke of the river near Del Rio.

Your video reminded me of a 3 day trip I took down the Pecos from about Pandale to the high Bridge at Langtry. It was about 51 miles, nearly killed us all, but it was pretty. That was back in 1988 late March. Now 72, never again, but I would never forget or trade the experience.

My dads best friend used to float from Pandale to the High Bridge once a year in the 80’s. We would go camp at the High Bridge and I would take a small boat up the Pecos as far as I could go and waIt on him and tow him back because the river slowed down in that area. The water was really clear when you got up there a ways and I would have to navigate around huge boulders that were under water! FYI the High Bridge is on the Pecos River just before it hits the Rio Grande and Langtry is about 30-45 miles up the Rio Grande from the High Bridge. Done a week long camping trip in a cave just below Langtry and took hours by small boat to get there. Good Times!

My brother in law was a government trapper and he had a trapline spanning from Langtry all the way to Sheffield and on to nearly Mason , 2000 traps at a run and bear as well as mountain lions and the occasional Leopard were taken. Beautiful country out west for sure
