I thought it was season 4 now.
Season 1: The vote and ”will they/wont they trigger article 50”.
Season 2: Article 50 is triggered and negotiations play out.
Season 3: Negotiations stop, parliament rejects the deal which triggers the chaos. Season finale is the scene Bercow makes during the closing of parliament.
Season 4: Starts with the supreme court handling the legality of the prorogation, parliament resumes work with everyone’s favorite speaker bringing OOOORDAAAA to the house.

As a Canadian, may I remind the British parliament that, as the model on which many other Commonwealth parliaments have been based, because it serves as a model to the others, it has a responsibility to show how effectively it can run. The extreme partisanship displayed there is not at all a model. Why had the minority government not reported on details of its Brexit negotiations with the EU? Why is it not preparing the British public to vote in a referendum on the Brexit withdrawal agreement it hopes that the EU will accept?

    • @momok1140
      @momok1140 5 ปีที่แล้ว

In America they have political appointees as judges. The ruling power in politics can stack the judiciary in such a way that any wrong-doing goes unchecked. Donald Trump has broken the law, members of his cabinet break the law and the opposing parties are stymied because of the judicial choke hold and the ability to drag things out via the courts. I could not be more proud of our independent judiciary. BoJo steps out of line once and the people can slap him back down because of the independence of our judicial system. Whether you agree with Brexit or not, fair play is true Britishness.. if we abandon that which Britain should be proud, what are you fighting for?

Now, he can't work until he's 75 because he hasn't started yet. As I said, this is a grand idea from the above mentioned, C. For S Justice. So the opposition is scared for an election, the government is scared for a second referendum. As an outsider I think that the only way out of this mess is first a second referendum to deal with Brexit and second a election to deal with everything else.
Personally I thing the British population will never ever give Brexit a majority, so problem solved.

Make the final deal that parliament is willing to approve, put that to the people, get that it of the way and then an election on the issues that are determined by party-politics.
Things could be so easy to solve.

Add that to the fact that they couldn’t get a Leave supporter to lead the Tories once Cameron resigned, and the chain reaction leading to the train wreck began.

The supreme court did not say what length of prorogation would have been 'lawful'.
    Four weeks, 3, 2, 1?
They might say it's not just the length but the purpose of prorogation that must be 'lawful'.
In the future, who will judge what is the true purpose and whether it is 'lawful'?
In the future, who will decide the 'lawful' length of prorogation? A judge?
In the future, shall we be governed by judges?
Judges have no empathy, sympathy, pragmatism or common sense.
Judges can see no further than their own personal concept of the law.
They are not competent for politics and they should stay well out of it.
They should withdraw their judgment on the prorogation.

If they had ruled any other way, they would have given the government the right to suspend the parliament, i.e. the citizens right to representation, for an interminate period. That is, it would have also enabled a remainer national unity government replacing Johnson's to cancel Brexit and prorogue parliament for two years preventing Brexiteer parliamentarians from criticising/scrutinizing government.
Therefore, the Court said that a prorogation typically lasts for 4-6 days and if it is longer, it must not constitute a hampering of the parliament's ability to legislate and scrutinice the government.
The government serves at the pleasure of the parliament, not the other way around.

Ugh, the speaker is doing his job. It's not his job to help the PM, it's the Speaker's job to empower Parliament. The difference is because first Theresa May as PM couldn't get her majority to pass her deal. Now the PM has tossed his majority away. That means Boris Johnson is in essence the opposition. That means the Speaker empowering Parliament means the government isn't going to get what they want.
All of this wouldn't be an issue with the ERG had voted with the whip for their PM's deal. They ignored their PM because they've decided that despite not being even mentioned in the Leave campaign the referendum was on Remain or No Deal. It's apparently the new normal though to retroactively change what things mean. See "the prorogation was exclusively for a queen's speech" into "we needed to continue the prorogation to deliver Brexit!". It's the Boris Johnson two step that gives us "I will follow the law-I'm not going to follow the laws I don't like-I absolutely will follow the law". So much for Leaving being about the rule of law and the importance of UK laws and courts.

Parliament had the opportunity to remove the PM, or change the rules, or both, they chose none of the above.
Instead they chose an underling governmental body to make a decision that they nor the PM has to follow make a decision that they should have done on your own.
