I am so sorry that this happened. Its just heartbreaking! I just read a post about a cockatiel today who also passed from kidney failure. The owner had a nacropsy done and they found that their kidney had failed too. They said that a higher pellet diet wasn't so good for this particular bird as apparently some birds don't react well to pellets. It's so hard because they are so so fragile and complex that its impossible to ever figure it out what's going on for them. I had no idea a yolk can do that. Just breaks my heart.
I lost my beloved green Quaker Parrot, Danno. He wasn’t even three years old. We woke up and he was at the bottom of the cage with his wings spread. I am sorry I didn’t do a necropsy. He was way too young. He ate well, had fresh water the majority of the time, was talkative, and seemed happy. No sign of illness. Thank you for sharing yours and Rio’s story. You are helping a lot of people. The other thing I thought of is how little the doctors know. They take blood or run a test and say the kidney enzymes are elevated or white blood cell count high, but often times they don’t have an answer beyond that.
Donna, I'm glad you found an answer for Rio's death. It's good to know what happened. I would have done the same thing. Thank you for sharing this. I'm sure this has been hard. Losing a bird is heart breaking. You're a wonderful bird parent. Grieving for a love one has no time limit. Rio will forever will be remembered. Asad Saeed - please look into Skyping with a good avian vet !!!! Start searching NOW for one so you have the introduction in case of emergency !! Any good avian Vet will completely understand !!! Do this now ! Don’t wait ! Get it set up so they know who you are !
@@annalisa14 Thanks Anna. I do have a vet but most vets in my area are generally into cats and dogs. Reviews from other vets haven't been so positive and there hasn't been anyone who is aviary specialist that one can blindly rely on.
Whatever caused her illness and death..she will never be sick or die again. She is in a better place and well loved and cared for. God bless you both for having known each other’s love!
Very informative video; you explained this illness with thorough detail. Never heard of Yolk Peritonitis before and hopefully never will again. That was certainly a terrible ordeal that Rio went through, but al least you now know, and there was nothing you could have done about it; it just had to run its course and take her. You have great birds that are a delight to watch; except Electra...hahaha ! Always enjoy seeing your birds in the bird room, they have such a good home with you, especially Jack and May who would not have survived if you did not catch them outside. Now you have Kingsley, who will be a great friend to you as well.

Thank you for sharing this with us. You have given everyone a good explanation of the importance of a necropsy, especially if a person has more than one pet. In addition to contagious diseases for the species, there are zoonotic diseases, things that can be passed to humans. So many people don't want to spend the money on a necropsy but now they know how important it is. Plus you now have closure, you know everything was done for Rio that could be done and you know what caused her illness and passing. You are very brave to have made this video. It must have been very difficult. I send you love and a big hug from Florida.
This video finally revealed to me why this channel is my favourite pet channel. The lady gives about as much love and care to her avian pets as they could possibly get. Rio did suffer an untimely and tragic end but she did have a wonderful human.

I am so sorry for your loss. I have an Lutino Indian Ringneck - Male - named Precious and , yes , he is. He just turned 21 yrs old. Six months early he was not acting his normal self.He had a large growth on his underside.Took him to reg vet - did x-rays & blood work . Recomended an avian specialist - Thought heart or liver cancer.Went to specialist - more test -tumor liver cancer .Sedated & drew out a BUNCH of stuff out of tumor.Gave me meds to give him to hopefully shrink tumor.After 2 1/2 months he still going good ! I Love My Baby and I know my time is short with him . I thank God for each day - he's my baby. I know ur pain & my God bless you.

Thank you for sharing this important message. This can happen to any female bird at any time and even if the cause was known, there was no antibiotic or meds that could be effective. These results gives you closure and peace of mind that there was nothing wrong on your part or anything that could have prevented this. Rio will be missed and hope your remaining flock can ease the pain a little bit every day. You are a great bird owner and knew there was no one to blame but it was just her time. Donna, I'm so sorry that you lost Rio. It's ok to be sad. There was really nothing more that you or your vet could have done to save her. It was a blessing that she had the pain medication for the last hours of her life... I say this from experience as I am a survivor of peritonitis. I was hospitalized for 20 days b4 it was diagnosed as a leaking hole duct. The only reason I survived was that they were able to clamp shut the duct during surgery, but still I will never be the same. So what I want you to know that you did everything right and now Rio is at peace and she is free from pain. Thank you for all that you do to keep us informed!
Your welcome and so sorry you had to go through peritonitis. I wish Rio could of told me what was wrong but sadly we have to guess at what's wrong. 20 days is a long time the be in the hospital. Glad you are okay now.

I lost a few cockatiels in earlier years due to a lack of knowledge with their dietary needs so people like yourself who educate on caring for fids is so necessary. I lost a bird this way and it is truly heartbreaking. Rio's last few videos were tough to watch. My African Ringneck, Kiwi, died a few years ago. She was about 30, and it broke my heart. I feel your pain. I am sorry for your loss. The fact that Rio was only 8 brought me to tears. Someday, we will be reunited with our pets when we cross the Rainbow Bridge.

We don't anymore, but I would like to get another 🐦. Just one to hand raise. I used to hand raise baby birds for a friend who had 3 acres of birds. I had babies from her all the time!! Cockatiels, parakeets, bourkes, Indian ring necks, conures, finches. Etc. People brought me wild birds who fell from nests. Crazy. I did this for over 18 years and loved it. So sorry about Rio. I had peritonitis in my stomach cavity and almost died myself. Mine was from a bike leak. Very painful. It's good that you brought her to the vet where she was made comfortable with fluids and pain meds.

Iam soooo sorry to hear about what happened to your poor Rio but it was very informative.When I watch one of your videos when Rio was feeling good I became somewhat tearful to find out that she passed away .I know I’ve had some precious birds pass and I felt the same grief as I’ve felt when losing a human loved one as I consider my birds my soulmates.I lost a female cockatiel 29 yrs ago when a egg cracked inside of her and she screamed .Unlike your situation, I could have prevented this from happening just by giving her a calcium supplement I was told so I blamed myself for my ignorance for what happened .Thank you for shareing your grief and all that very informative information.Again, sincerely sorry for your loss and unfortunately I can relate to your emotional pain😰.
@Barbara Goldfuss, Hi. I want you to know that your reply to Donna struck a definite chord with me. A good friend of mine found a little cockatiel wandering in the Macy's parking lot in Boulder Colorado of all places! She was able to keep her after no owner responded to the notices. She really bonded with her feathered baby and loved her dearly, but in the end she lost her dear cockatiel. We knew that MoonShadow(the cockatiel's name) was broody just before she passed & her end came suddenly so I had a necropsy done for her to find out why. Well, MoonShadow also had cracked an egg before laying it. We also were told about the calcium needing to be increased even more than normal for a laying bird. However the vet at CSU told us to try not to feel guilty as we didn't know she was producing eggs since she hadn't for 6 years & more importantly in his mind, we had no easy access to an avian vet. We would have found out these things during regular wellness exams if so. The college was not practical for regular exams and he admitted this. I wonder, did you have access to an avian vet who would have told you these things? You're in my heart and prayers along with your winged baby. Many blessings
Oh to answer your question, I didn’t have an avian vet but I did get one soon after . I also lost a little beautiful little female Quaker parrot at age 6 because she had a horrible disease called Bornavirvus and she started becoming ill when she came it Into puberty:,but my vet said wherever I purchased her never had their breeders tested and my poor little Ollie girl suffered with seizures and she never deserved what she was given in her little life.I spent almost 5000.00 trying to save her and gave her her anti seizure meds daily until she stopped eating .I brought her to my again vet and she passed away from a grandmall seizure the next day under oxygen .I still cry over daily and she passed away on 3/22/2017 @ 10:30 am and I have her ashes in a little urn.So when Donna lost her poor Rio I went into tears here as I knew exactly how she felt knowing how dearly she loved Rio and all of her birds. I I also have an African Grey Timneh (Stormy) and he goes to my vet and he just had his exam My Timneh is going on 7 yrs old.Thanks again for your kindness and concern. I love Donna and all of her videos and look forward to them all and it’s soo nice that I can talk to bird and pet people.

Donna, I'm so sorry that you lost Rio. It's ok to be sad. There was really nothing more that you or your vet could have done to save her. It was a blessing that she had the pain medication for the last hours of her life... I say this from experience as I am a survivor of peritonitis. I was hospitalized for 20 days b4 it was diagnosed as a leaking hole duct. The only reason I survived was that they were able to clamp shut the duct during surgery, but still I will never be the same. So what I want you to know that you did everything right and now Rio is at peace and she is free from pain. Thank you for all that you do to keep us informed!
Your welcome and so sorry you had to go through peritonitis. I wish Rio could of told me what was wrong but sadly we have to guess at what's wrong. 20 days is a long time the be in the hospital. Glad you are okay now.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I have three Alexandrines and they are so loved that my biggest fear is losing one. I lost a few cockatiels in earlier years due to a lack of knowledge with their dietary needs so people like yourself who educate on caring for fids is so necessary. I'm so sorry that you lost Rio this way. It is a very sudden event & since birds are so stoic about pain the chances are that it's not possible to know anything any earlier than what you did. I lost a bird this way and it is truly heartbreaking. I'm so sorry for your loss & I greatly appreciate your courage and the love you have for Rio to make this video and share the information with others. I know that Rio is flying through the universe now, waiting for the moment when she can be with you again. Thanks again for helping all owners of female birds.

Rio's last few videos were tough to watch. My African Ringneck, Kiwi, died a few years ago. She was about 30, and it broke my heart. I feel your pain.

I’m new to your channel. I am starting to think about getting a ring neck. I had cockatiels growing up. One was a female who died of egg binding. I’m glad you were able to find the reason for her demise. She was beautiful.

So very sorry about Rio!! I recently signed up on your channel. So happy I did. You put out very good information. My husband and I raised cockatiels for a long time. We don't anymore, but I would like to get another 🐦. Just one to hand raise. I used to hand raise baby birds for a friend who had 3 acres of birds. I had babies from her all the time!! Cockatiels, parakeets, bourkes, Indian ring necks, conures, finches. Etc. People brought me wild birds who fell from nests. Crazy. I did this for over 18 years and loved it. So sorry about Rio. I had peritonitis in my stomach cavity and almost died myself. Mine was from a bike leak. Very painful. It's good that you brought her to the vet where she was made comfortable with fluids and pain meds.
I admire that you keep such a good eye on so many birds/ loved ones all at once , good for you 🌺

Iam soooo sorry to hear about what happened to your poor Rio but it was very informative.When I watch one of your videos when Rio was feeling good I became somewhat tearful to find out that she passed away .I know I’ve had some precious birds pass and I felt the same grief as I’ve felt when losing a human loved one as I consider my birds my soulmates.I lost a female cockatiel 29 yrs ago when a egg cracked inside of her and she screamed .Unlike your situation, I could have prevented this from happening just by giving her a calcium supplement I was told so I blamed myself for my ignorance for what happened .Thank you for shareing your grief and all that very informative information.Again, sincerely sorry for your loss and unfortunately I can relate to your emotional pain😰.
@Barbara Goldfuss, Hi. I want you to know that your reply to Donna struck a definite chord with me. A good friend of mine found a little cockatiel wandering in the Macy's parking lot in Boulder Colorado of all places! She was able to keep her after no owner responded to the notices. She really bonded with her feathered baby and loved her dearly, but in the end she lost her dear cockatiel. We knew that MoonShadow(the cockatiel's name) was broody just before she passed & her end came suddenly so I had a necropsy done for her to find out why. Well, MoonShadow also had cracked an egg before laying it. We also were told about the calcium needing to be increased even more than normal for a laying bird. However the vet at CSU told us to try not to feel guilty as we didn't know she was producing eggs since she hadn't for 6 years & more importantly in his mind, we had no easy access to an avian vet. We would have found out these things during regular wellness exams if so. The college was not practical for regular exams and he admitted this. I wonder, did you have access to an avian vet who would have told you these things? You're in my heart and prayers along with your winged baby. Many blessings

Oh to answer your question, I didn’t have an avian vet but I did get one soon after . I also lost a little beautiful little female Quaker parrot at age 6 because she had a horrible disease called Bornavirvus and she started becoming ill when she came it Into puberty:,but my vet said wherever I purchased her never had their breeders tested and my poor little Ollie girl suffered with seizures and she never deserved what she was given in her little life.I spent almost 5000.00 trying to save her and gave her her anti seizure meds daily until she stopped eating .I brought her to my again vet and she passed away from a grandmall seizure the next day under oxygen .I still cry over daily and she passed away on 3/22/2017 @ 10:30 am and I have her ashes in a little urn.So when Donna lost her poor Rio I went into tears here as I knew exactly how she felt knowing how dearly she loved Rio and all of her birds. I I also have an African Grey Timneh (Stormy) and he goes to my vet and he just had his exam My Timneh is going on 7 yrs old.Thanks again for your kindness and concern. I love Donna and all of her videos and look forward to them all and it’s soo nice that I can talk to bird and pet people.
