6:30: A reduced male population should lead to polygyny (men having multiple wives) rather than polyandry. Polygamy is a term that includes both polygyny and polyandry. Since polygyny is more common, polygamy is often taken as a synonym, but in this context, the more precise term should be used.

Studied a bit of this in anthropology classes decades ago, and the unusual environmental conditions that made this an adaptation. Usually involved difficult agricultural land that required a lot of male labor. Didn't know about the upper class practices in places like ancient Egypt. Thanks for the video.

In the case of the Egyptians, then, Polyandry systems had it that as the farms often required a number of men to work a particular farm to support a single woman and the collective family, the women "owned" her males. From a certain point of view. The Egyptian History might be thought of as Matriarchal in nature? My thanks for that suggestion.
The phrase 'hints at' is often used in this article, and is generally 'making a mountain out of a molehill'. In fact, polyandry was VERY RARE compared to polygyny (multiple wives), as the event of violence and war usually led to a greatly diminished male population, not a female one. The key risk to women in historic times, was 'death related to childbirth', and was often the reason that 'maidens' weren't as desired as people think (existing mothers had a track record of successful prior births they lived through). A polyandrous family usually led to violence and tragedy, and was not generally successful except in general survival during 'very lean times'. Just as with herd animals, the best use of 'reproduction in numbers' is one male to a group of females, while the most futile reproduction effort is multiple males with only one female. Confusion arises (as to sired offspring), as well as jealousy and violence. As a result, there are in fact, very few documented cases of society-accepted polyandry in the past 3000-years. Polygamy is a different story, and in many cases, leads to an 'equality' (3 women vs 1 man in a household) that historically, women wouldn't have had the benefit of, otherwise (aka outnumbering the husband, even with force, if necessary).
@@cheetavontiebolt9971 so true , but I think it would be a real pain in the ass trying to figure out how to make it work with all of the jealousy dynamics 😂
Right, they got this much deep info from ancient Egyptian records. We don't even know how they built their structures but we have detailed info on their inter marital relationships. Likely this was enforced on the lower cast. I do know that at height and decadence of Romans and Greeks, they had moral degradation with women going wild and out of control, and with it, the crumbling of their empires.
Well, yes,it is abnormal. We usually hear of high status men with multiple women, not the other way around. A woman can only produce offspring with one partner at a time. Men can have hundreds of kids
What can Polyandry provide a family? Nothing. Trouble is all Polyandry could give any family. If the way of life cannot sustain its own life, then how is it going to sustain this family? This is not what marriage is for tbh. People defiling things they have no clue about.
I think this would be contradictory, aside from LUST, to the need for Demographic needs, replenishment, as only one child cld, obviously, be born at a time, w caveats, but, Polygamy, was, is ONLY SOCIAL FORM TO QUICKLY replace population, as matter fact, Polyandre wld be indication if lack of females, whereas Polygamy wld be opposite, lack of Men! I might add, ut takes a real leap of faith, trust, confidence, lack of jealousy to do either! Anyhow, 😂I might add, by what RIGHT, does ANYONE, presume to tell anyone how to live their life, aside from obvious perverted abuses, like paedophilia!
Polygyny is actually not good for men, in the same way that polyandry is not good for women. In such societies, the most desirable women ( in the case of polyandry) would have many husbands while less desirable women might not have the chance to reproduce at all. The same thing happens to men in a polygynous society. Monogamy offers the best chance for the most people to be able to find a spouse and reproduce. Forms of polygamy have historically been chosen due to very specific societal conditions. Polygamy in modern America ( usually called polyamory due to unconstitutional laws ) is generally a sexual ‘kink’, since there really are no societal survival issues that would necessitate such arrangements.

Now a days attempted polyandry looks super gross and invokes jealousy
She has to be hot or rich.. like celebrities are today..
Would you join a harem tho?

Hahaha, I didn't even think of that... :D

Let's be honest, it's probably lady's choice
@@HistoryButFast you’re probably right 😂

It had to be extraordinary situation for an arrangement
Iike that, with very low female number. It's not as common and " adaptive " as you say
