Many of you asked me: Hey, how did your first painted miniature look? So I decided to make a video and show you how basic it was and how much I had to learn through my first few years of painting. Hopefully it will encourage a lot of you to keep at it and practice and enjoy the hobby, because eventually we all get better - it took me quite some time too!
The good thing today is, there is so many more resources available than 20 years ago, so you will progress even faster than me ;) I hope you'll enjoy the video!

Remember that you can try Skillshare for FREE using this link: skl.sh/MKR705 - And it DIRECTLY supports me, if you sign up through this link as well! And there was never an easier sponsorship for me to take, because I can get 100% behind the concept of Skillshare. If you know me I love to learn and teach the HOWs, but also the WHYs and Skillshare's teachers are REALLY GOOD with this. I learned a lot from artists on Skillshare, volumetry of the body has helped me with placing better highlights - I am actually rrrrreeeeeeeeally bad at drawing, so the drawing classes were super helpfull and there is also a lot of deigners on there that teach you A LOT about how colors interact and much much more! Maybe try it out!
One thing that kills me is when someone says humble beginnings and three models in looks better than my 300th model
awww...I don't believe that ;)
Trovarion Miniatures you are a tour de force my friend and I’m glad you share it with us but you innate understanding of composition is so impressive
@@chrishood4285 aww...I am flattered! thanks for watching!
@@trovarion I don't believe that was your third model...I remember when I was a wee young 'un I tried to do that paintjob for my buddy's Tyranids and we got mixed results 😆
Just joking, of course. Picasso shits on us all with what he was doing at ~14.
Trovarion: my 3rd sculpt ever
Me: Are you kidding???
To be fair though: I did a lot of converting before, so I was used to rescupting parts ;) But I still was proud of the result regardless :)
Here is why I like watching your stuff: Reality check. Everytime a tutorial doesn't work or I think I can't do it I watch one of your 'non tutorial' videos. It gets you back to earth, take a break and re-try. 'No contrast, no party' is in my head all the time! Thanks for your effort!
It's comments like this that make me want to keep creating them, since they don't get a lot of views (except maybe the contrast vid you mentioned) but I like that they help at least some people in one way or the other! Thanks a lot!
@@trovarion If I had one request I would ask for a failed paint job video. Something that didn't come out nice while you make it. Wrong colour, messed up the base coat while highlighting. Wrong shading. Everybody can try to mimic a tutorial and claim success or not. But fixing errors that we all make in my mind is the actual learning curve. And that comes way too short in many many videos. Just thinking out loud...
@@christianschmidt1784 I am always looking for minis on ebay to make "ebay rescue type video" - but I never find the proper models or they are too expensive. But it has the same principle at heart.
@@trovarion Oh come on. I bet you have a whole box of unfinished minis somewhere. Just finish one with your non-dominant hand and it immediately needs rescue 😆
Quality will always rise to the top eventually, keep at it your work is very much appreciated. 🙏
Dude... That's amazing! Honestly, as great as your painting is, I find your sculpting to be more impressive. It's gorgeous, and a part of me is jealous of your breadth of experience.
I watched several of your videos for painting techniques and tips. But I had no idea you're such a great sculptor. The minis you've sculpted are amazing.
There is something extremely charming to me about you still having your very first models close at hand, but not knowing where your first Golden Demon winners are.
Ooooooh! Another Mage Knight player! Me and my friends got into Magic, then Mage Knight. Then we got introduced to actual miniature hobby war games with Lord of the Rings back in 2001. It was only a matter of time before we were into 40k (around 2003) and I then dipped my feet into Warhammer Fantasy. So here I am with 3x 40k armies, 2x WHFB armies, a bunch of minis for games I don't play but liked the models, and the start of a WWII collection all these years later.
You seem to have talent, but also a strong desire to improve. Your first 3 miniatures demonstrate that you were willing and able to observe and learn rapidly. Many painters seem unwilling or unable to truly observe and apply lessons. Your first handful of miniatures shoot you past the maximum painting level the majority in the hobby ever achieve.
It's also nuts how much the level of painting skill has increased over the past 20 years. Your first Golden Demon wins are so far from the current golden demon standard.
Very nice Trovarion. One can see that you have a lot of talent, but also that you worked a lot to get to the level you are at right now. Our first mini is not as convincing as Ducan's one, but it shows that you started from far back.
It's good to see that you are human too. That means everyone of us can achieve a high level with practice. Thanks for share with us. This encourage me to keep painting and improving.
Seeing that Dirz hybrid reminded me that I've seen your work awhile ago in a painting guide by Darkson Designs copyright 2005. Seeing it larger on the screen made me realize how much of the subtle freehand that I missed! Thanks for sharing! I still have all my early painted minis as well!
Confrontation models are still out there. I even managed to get a Tiger of Dirz. Very lovely concept
Loved seeing your Rackham stuff, and feel like I’ve seen it around the internet before.
Been watching a dozen videos of yours, slowly building up confidence to buy some minis and give it a go, then I see this!
😅
That emblem! And that sculpting!
Still, going to try and start, even if it's super intimidating.
Dude your first ever sculptures were amazing!
thanks!
I still paint sometimes my legacy OOP miniatures bases with goblin green, as a tribute to my early years.
this dude improved so fast - you can see massive leaps of improvement from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd
Great video.Always interesting to see peoples journeys. It always surprises me to see how many people have long breaks from painting minis. I don't know why because I also did. Looking forward to part 2.
For me it was a multitude of reasons...doing it too much, having wrong expectations and goals and burning out a bit. Discovering sculpting and the extra level of creating "from scratch" it adds... tricky...
Eines der besten Tyraniden Farbschemata! Wahrscheinlich einer der Gründe warum ich als Kind angefangen hab.
Spricht er deutsch? 😳
@@broletsgo Nein. Österreichisch ^_^

Ohhhhh! Those Confrontation mini's are so cool! I'm totally inspired to find some and convert into AdMech... Though Drukhari would be applicable as well ..
My dude paint that Phoenix guard for a video don't need to do tutorial style just cut and chop you painting that! Looks cool!
I am not sure. Thought about painting it a few times, but....I kind of want to keep the sculpt as a memento of my mini journey. ;)
I am 48 years old. I started with collecting airfix toy soldiers in the 70's. then modelkits from tamiya.started collecting warhammer since 1984. so I may have been painting for at least 30 years.but it still all looks meh, I don't have contrast, nice blends, nice highligths. and still don't know how to do so. I have painted so much models, watched and read so many tutorials. it's really frustrating to be bad at painting.
Just look at his sculpting! Some people are artists before they come to miniature painting. That does not mean you cannot reach this standard with dedicated practise. It's never too late to improve your skill set. Paint brave, be willing to try new things, new paints, new miniatures, new techniques. When painting for a long time especially in volume it's easy to fall back into old habits and what we know works. In order to improve we sometime have to be willing to ruin a few miniatures along the way. Sometimes even the most impressive competition miniatures have been dipped and stripped several times before reaching the judges table. I highly recommend following one of the masterclasses available for mini painting in you tube. It can really help push you into new techniques and raise your standard. Good luck, and have fun 😉👍
Try painting with a magnifier, it will help you a lot , I do always ware my magnifier.
It's crazy how good you were at sculpting right off the bat. Not bashing any of your painting, but it looks like you immediately had a really good eye for sculpting. I'm sure it wasn't easy though!
thanks! yeah, all the mini painting and converting i did before helped of course ;)
Thank you for sharing this!
I am very impressed with how focused and ambitious you were right from the beginning! I am thirteen minis into the hobby now, and while I'd say I do paint pretty bravely, I have nowhere near your focus.
I already have a feeling that I will end up enjoying making models more than painting them, so I have a feeling that this painting thing is a temporary hobby, but I am having fun.
I loved this video as a reference to the podcast you did with Venturella the other day, about talent, because you clearly have a lot of natural flair for both painting and sculpting, but what I take away is that you are also more focused and diligent and "obsessed" than 95+% of the rest of us.
I have some flair for artsy stuff, but tbh I am a bit of a slacker, so it doesn't get me very far. :)
Cheers!
Yes, obsession is a pretty big factor in all of this ;)
Lol! His 5th mini is better than my stuff I’ve been doing after like 10 years. Amazing talent!!
Yep, same here. Painted an entire High Elf army pretty much just base coat and single layer of dry brushing (with Goblin Green bases, obviously)...
I can totally relate to this. My first minis may as well have been color-dyed mashed potatoes. Now I win awards. lol
Very cool look at your timeline. Wish more content creators did this.
thanks a lot! I wish videos like this would interest more people, but they don't. It is what it is.
Great video, looking forward to part two! Have a great weekend.
thanks for watching!
Just stopped by to say I really enjoyed this. I'm looking forward to part 2.
Awesome, thank you!
What a great video. Thankyou so much. That unpainted 54mm phoenix guard is great i agree paint it and we will watch.
thanks! wish i had some footage of sculpting it too :D
Holy SHIT. I remember your Theoden entry from when I was a kid. That’s mind blowing
Holy crap you first miniature looks better than my first miniature i did back in ....... think it was when I was ..... 16. I used gauche and calligraphy ink . Had no idea what I was doing .
Thanks for the Skillshare trial! Good old Confrontation....those were the good times :) I think Dirtz, Druuni and Acheron are still some of the best gaming miniatures around (not counting iliad's barbarians ofc). But then I had a nice 12 years break from the hobby and I see some of the new GW mini are quite good.
thanks for checking the sponsor, helps a lot with being able to create more vids! Confrontation was great...new style of minis, fun skirmish system, loved it! Illiad had some of the greates mini sculptors of all time! GW minis improved A LOT too...the new wurmspat are so detailed and have very sharp edges, low undercut count, etc. they really work on improving!
I enjoyed this video. Looking forward to part 2!
Thumbs up for the White Lion sculpt
Great insight to your journey, can't wait to see more. Another great video :) keep up the great work
thank you!!
Ahaha
You have great skill and also great content with you video production.
I clicked this hoping to get inspired by your lousy first piece but the first one is good, the second is really pretty good and the third one and ongoing are already incredible!
Hope you keep up the content, just found you today and just started the hobby very recently.
Sir, you are a true talent. Amazing and beautiful work and brilliant video. We are not worthy!!!!!🤟🏻
aww thank you so much!
This video does the opposite of its intended purpose, I just feel worse that ever about my painting now...
Same he improved so fast mabye if he explained how he got from each place and how long each one took him I would feel better but good third mini was already looking professional too me
Great vid. Thanks for sharing
thanks!
I don't like how his 3rd mini already looks better than my 20th
Waaaay better than my first attempts! Feeling quite defeated by it honestly :(
Also came in from mageknight. Awesome
nice :)
I'm one of the minority following your channel for the sculpting aspect - I would love to see more recent stuff, even if its not a full video. There was so much in the early stages of your channel but not as much now. Obviously painting is where the views are at, but much like I've found painting through sculpting, maybe people watching your painting tutorials will give sculpting a crack!
Was a nice video made me dig out some of my old stuff to look at 😂 still got a long way to go but happy with my progression after a long break
there's still some hope for my painting skill ... :D
Somebody needs to bring back bases with stats and integrated wound counters. My eyes just popped out of their sockets.
Congratulations on the sponsorship, hope you can continue to get them
thanks a lot, that's very kind to say! It would definitely help with being able to do more videos! It's still going to be tough since people don't watch my content unless it's 40k or warhammer related, like they do with other mini-youtubers. And they skip when I talk to the audience...oh well...can't really change my personality. But tough to get sponsorships for warhammer only videos.
@@trovarion i try and look for information and inspiration wherever i can to improve my painting. my way of thinking is i can take something learned from 40k and apply it to painting something else and vice versa
Oh my god! What is that miniature with the hunting eagle on his arm? That is totally an idea I had for a conversion but now I see it has already been done. Dammit!
Inquisitor Coteaz
Really cool to see this walk down memory lane. Out of curiosity, your old favorite gaming store wasn’t Damage on the Maria Hilfe Straße, was it? Sorry for any misspelling... I loved that place in the late 90s and early 2000s. Did mainly RPGs at the time but also picked up a few minis there. Last but not least, please do at least one video in Wienerisch, or at least in German. Just don’t forget the subtitles!
yeah it was exactly where my miniature journey started.
Considering the variety of models; this makes me wonder how a Gunpla made up and painted by you would be like.
Fuk yeah! Mage knight was dope! I loved that game.
Interesting video.
"Ive collected everything"... Looks at the golden demons.... I seeeeee....
Yeah, you were a better painter in 2003 on your first three models than I am now after being in the hobby longer than you.
You have incredible talent.
I think this video sort of shows the opposite of what you want it to show. Lol.
I get comments like this a lot but it's not true. What I always did, and also did back then was invest a lot of time into research and how to do things and then taking my time with the execution. Research and deliberate practice, not talent is what got me to where I am.
@@trovarion fair enough, if that's how you see it.
Personally I think it's a bit rum when people who are ridiculously good at something (and got good insanely fast) say they have no talent, and it's all hard work. Feels like they're saying all the not so good people aren't working hard enough.
@@vinvenal4243 it also feels insulting when you work hard and people tell you it's just talent.
Yeah I can see that. I'm sorry if it felt that way. I didn't mean to imply that it was just talent.
I think that to be able to paint like you, someone needs to be both very talented, and very dedicated.
I think you have both in spades.
Deine Skulpturen sind besser als viele, die man kaufen kann... Ich kann noch nicht einmal ein Brot richtig formen 😂
Ngl this guy is fucking built different holy
Yo your 3rd painted mini had blending in white??? Even before you got to layering??? Man I’m shite lol
So is your propensity for collecting things why you collected Golden Daemons?
Maybe
@@trovarion still a better plan than my collection of grey sprues
It's clear you are a perfectionist from this video, but I'm curious, how long did you spend on those initial models?
No idea, too much time has passed
Sorry to hear about the Intellectual Property bullying for your lost videos.
thanks, bud!
What videos were taken down?
Not taken down, but the profits got claimed.
“Greed is good” is still a thing in 2020 😔
Even Guy Pearce had to star in Home & Away on TV before he did movies.
true xD
Dirz=Love
Addicted to collecting things including those golden demons ay?
Definitely was hooked on trying to get as many as possible for a short period of time!
Im so angry at 15 yo myself for selling the first lotr goblin i painted (i started at 8yo prolly). Recently found minas tirith warriors and high elves tho. What a time machine.
Still got my 1999 Charizard card ;)
I was basically just saying "what the fuck" the entire video.. wonder what it's like to be the best at something just right of the bat.
haha...thanks mate.
I am painting my first now and it looks like a 8 year old painted it
I'm about to quit painting it
You kidding ??? This ultimately shows that no matter how much you practice in order to be a really good painter you have to have som kind of talent. I mean his third miniature was the tyranid
No. But you need to study, read, try to put what you learn into practice and dedicate yourself to what you want to get better at. Analyze what went wrong and correct for the next try. That's what I did from day one.
This video is proof to me that you can't just learn to be good at things, the best people are just born good...there are people who have painted 100 models that look worse than your 3rd model...what a joke life is.
