    i did acrylic painting at college in london (canvas/board painting, not models obviously), we used 7 tubes of paint. Yellow, Cyan, Magenta, Red, Navy, Lemon, White. That was it, 7 tubes, 6 colours + white, that was all we were allowed to use for our entire life in college painting every day. I think the base colours for an army you are painting are very helpful, but you definitely dont need every last colour youre gonna use.
    The reason our college limited us like that is because having more colours of paint doesnt make you a better painter, having less colours of paint makes you a better painter. you are forced to mix, to understand colour blending, to understand relative colour. If you want to paint green grass and you have a tube of grass green you just put that on the canvas and there it is. Ok, but was that really the shade of the grass? was that exactly the colour you wanted it to be? not having the tube of green forces you to ask what exact colour of green do i want? and what mix of hues is that exactly? the less products you have the better you become as you are forced to make it work the hard way and really question what colour you want to apply.

    The way I personally operate.
    I started out (again) by trying out a couple of constrast paints.
    Loved it and thus bought the entire line of paints.
    Used them for a few months and realized I wanted some acrylics.
    Bought a pack of 50 or so colors from army painter (80 or so €) as well as a wet pallette from red grass.
    Used them for a few months and realized i wanted to learn how to use an airbrush.
    So i bought the cheapest one i could find as well as a bunch (15 or so) of liquitex inks (I hated mixing paints in the cup, hence the liquitex).
    The liquitex really helped and got me going with the airbrush.
    At this point i have a very solid Base of paints and only buy paints that look INTERESTING.
    for example arter watching trovarions necron video I instantly ordered myself a bottle of vallejo aluminium and the glowy orange vallejo paint.
    Because they looked cool and I want to try them out.
    This way I am constantly upgrading and growing my collection.
    Works awesome so far.
    Have an entire bookcase of mostly painted miniatures from the last 12-18 months or however long ago i actually started.
    Just bought my first expensive brushes as well.
    A pack of 3 raphael 8404 brushes I'm looking very much forward to trying out since i only used cheap nylon brushes so far.
    And a paintshaker... my arm is not what it used to be I'm afraid.
    After using my cheap airbrush for 6 or so months i felt ready for a better one.
    So I ordered an Iwata neo with an extra needle and it is a fantastic upgrade so far.

    Great video! For my family, we started with citadel since it's pre-mixed colors helped us quickly put paint on the model. Then as your described, we realized there were holes in our paint line. My wife is excellent at mixing paints so when we discovered the Kimera line, we found everything we needed. Kimera for the unique colors, citidael for the basic colors (leather, metal etc) and craft paints for our scenery. We actively try to not accumulate more paint than we can use so we don't waste anything.

    Kujo gave me some very good advice on limited palettes (and limited brushes, too, lol), and helped me get off my butt and start painting. Everyone has their own style, but one thing from his videos that has helped me is how he uses the same palette, main colors, and lightens or darkens the same paint, or adds a different color into the paint he started with, which helps "tie in" the overall look. Rather than continuously pulling a new bottle off the shelf. I'm not sure I'm expressing the concept very well, but he does it all the time, and it just pulls the composition together so nicely.

    Personally i like the editing. Gives you ways to highlight certain points while cutting unnecessary blabla to keep it short. Also more time for inserting memes. I sometimes even watch vids on 1.25 speed to watch it all in even less time so posting vids uncut would make me watch them later because I wouldn't watch them in between things and instead on evenings only. 20 mins is my limit for watching stuff in a break.
    On topic:
    As a beginner I really struggled to understand that it wasn't the colour itself making the mini look chalky (never gets old) but how I handled it. I never would have found a good colour hadn't I stopped painting with too much water, that made the pigments pool at the sides, giving it an uneven finish. So for beginners I'd say make good use of the colours you have at first or it gets frustrating fast. i am still fascinated by the difference consistency makes when applying paint.
    Keep it up!

    Great video, really enjoyed the knowledge and insight from 2 master painters. Invaluable for someone starting and wanting to advance in painting. The mention of being a chef and not a baker, really was an eye opener. Personally, being newer to the hobby, when I started it felt more of trying to be a baker, getting the color and look to match a tutorial or someone else's model. As I learn more it feels more about finding a style and method of painting to achieve my wanted look, aka chef. Thanks and look forward to the next vid.

    You _cannot_ get every color from yellow, blue, red, black, and white. That will give you a very narrow color gamut (exactly what gamut will depend on the exact pigments you choose). Similarly, CMYK is also a narrow gamut, with significant deficits in saturated reds (for example).
    None of which is to say that you need everything, but there is definitely space between having five colors and having everything in a whole company's (or multiple companies') line(s).
    As it happens, I like occasionally working with a very limited palette (dioxazine purple, burnt sienna, and zinc white is plenty to do interesting work with, for instance). And working in that kind of constricted space is really useful for understanding what is actually happening with those pigments. Furthermore, the restriction acts as a spur to creativity. I recommend the experience to any serious painter. But I also like working with premixes of a variety of colors for simplicity and reproducibility. And I like having a wide variety of pigments, because mixing cadmium red and cobalt blue will give a different result than mixing quinacridone magenta and phthalo blue (red). And dioxazine purple will give yet another very different result.
    Oh, and everybody buys pigment from the same (very limited) list of pigment manufacturers. The differences between good (generally more expensive) and bad (cheap/student grade/craft) paints are much more about how much medium and pigment are in the bottle/tube (relative to filler and whatever thinner the company is using) than in that mythical finely ground pigment.
    NB:
    For painting rust, iron oxide browns and yellows (siennas, ochres, and umbers), being essentially rust already, work great. And that's true whether you use oils, inks (or "inks"), acrylics, casseins, dry pigments, or whatever.

    If I could go back and make a recommendation on purchasing paints to myself when I was first starting out, it would be this: buy the primary and secondary colors, black, white, then a few additional more specific paints once I decided on a color scheme for my army. From there just buying colors that are convenient so that I don't have to mix them every time. You definitely don't need a ton of paints. It does help though to try out a few different ranges, which I've definitely done. That way, I find specific colors in those ranges that I like. I have yet to try a single paint range (I've tried GW, reaper, pro acryl, Vallejo game and model color, scalecolor) that I dislike. If asked, I could and would recommend any of them.

  • @Mikey__R

    9:50 with whites, I've recently come to appreciate the need for two whites. You might need one with good coverage, this will likely use a titanium pigment; you'll also need a softer, more translucent white for mixing and glazing, which would probably use zinc as a pigment.
    When people talk about their difficulties with white and lighter colours, such as their tendency to go chalky, or the way they leave harsh lines that are difficult to blend out, it's most likely because their paint is using titanium to lighten the tint.

    • @ikkiiiieee
      @ikkiiiieee 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      in addition, cheaper white paint might involve actual chalk or other extra fillers. Finding a matte zinc white does prove to be quite difficult. Golden matte being OOP didn't help.

  • @skazdal
    @skazdal 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    One thing I discovered recently, while working on something that's going to be printed, CYMK color reference can be used to produce mixes very close to what you get on screen. You use the cyan, magenta, yellow and black values to know how many parts of what to add, then you use the saturation value of the color to add the required number of white parts. I recently mixed some verdigris, this method made it super fast to achieve a good result. There's actually a lot of red in this color, I wouldn't have guessed! (3 parts cyan / 1 part magenta /2 parts yellow, + 12 parts white for a 33% saturation, if anyone is curious). So take photos or pictures of colors you like, convert them to CYMK and get those juicy references to start making the color you want.

    I do have this problem. my two favorite painters, Angel Giraldez and Sorastro have several go to paints(Dark Prussian Blue, Dark Sea Blue and such paints.) and i would buy them up and then just, I dont want to say they wouldnt work, but they just dont work for me. And i still buy paints i see of them that i like the color i have started to learn a bit more of how i paint

    Loved it. Would love to see you debunking the "Two thin coats / shade with wash / highlith" myth as the only way to paint.
    Other easy subjects : "10/0 brushes are required to paint eyes", wetpalette, GW is the best miniature range (sensitive topic).

      Lol to see a myth debunked . Pigment . Is it better for a paint that has more pigment in it ? Coverage of the paint . What paint brand is better . There a difference is liquid or dry pigment . Myth : contrast paints are just inks with additives and a very high price tag. Myth: companies are gouging thier customers over the fact they know nothing about paints e.g.. you can just use inks or pigment and make your own paints adding mediums that results in cheaper paint .

    Sold 12 paints of my 150ish collection some weeks ago, they were not opened and I thought I´d never use em.
    A few days ago I needed 3 of them, and had to buy them again yesterday.....
    Give it a few more weeks or months, and I have all 12 again :D

    Feedback on the form: less cuts please.
    I feel like the analogy chef/baker is interesting. there may be a myth to bust here. Can we not achieve great looking models with a methodical approach and by limiting the number of variables (paints, brushes, mediums, models) and focusing on applying techniques in defined sequences? At the end of the day, isn’t that what a pastry chef does to produce delicious good looking cakes? Is the creativity necessarily or mostly in/during the act of painting the model?

    I think the biggest thing having lots of colors does for me is provide color inspiration. I know I can achieve any color by mixing…but I don’t know if I would think to use, or be inspired to use, specific colors if I hadn’t seen them in my collection first.

  • @imdeaded
    @imdeaded 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Most of what that has been covered excluded one most important issue of paints . Consistancy of the product from the name manufacturer . Having a reliable color is probably pretty important . Probably why most artists rely on a certain paint same as why everyone has a go to paint brush that doesn't split .

    Funny thing to note, if you shift over to magenta, cyan and the more gold yellow, you get better mixing (on the triangle shift it one spot over on the color wheel). It's the same reason why your printer uses cmyk ink and not bryb ink.

    I’ve been stuck on this question for a while; can you still paint miniatures if you don’t play tabletop games?

    • @James-dk2kx
      @James-dk2kx 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Of course. Trovarian doesn't play from what I recall.
      I play, but I also paint minis I never intend to play with because I want to paint them.

    • @trovarion
      @trovarion  4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      maaaaaaaaaaaate :) of course you can...it's the most satisfying hobby in the world just to paint and have fun with the minis, like create cool scenery around it and dioramas...or just paint them up pretty! go and try it :)

    • @samprastherabbit
      @samprastherabbit 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Can you? Nay, you MUST, especially if you don't play! Like me, but more from lack of opportunities. It's fun getting your minis on the table, but you can paint single models for D&D, or just for your own enjoyment.

      i dont play tabletop games, but i've been printing minis nonstop eversince i got my resin printer just because they are so cool to look at, still waiting for my first batch of paints to come so i can practice painting

    • @peterdickinson4599

      I don’t play. Love painting minis. I’m painting some Stormcast Eternals right now. Purely because I love the sculpts. Can’t imagine a scenario where they will ever make it to a table. Don’t care. Doesn’t detract from my enjoyment. I just want to feel satisfied with the finished piece/s.

    while also themselves having a crippling paint buying addiction.
