- St Ives is a beautiful seaside holiday town near Lands End and Penzance in Cornwall, England, known for its picturesque beaches, charming streets, and rich artistic heritage.

If there's a heaven , it's the St Ives in my early 20s , nothing but very fond memories of that beautiful town .

I am lucky to call this my home for the past 38 years
My all time favourite place in Britain
In the 60s the sea by harbour was full of ships. We watched them bring in lots of different types of fish. It was very busy then. Not any more. The fish have depleted and there was trouble up to the 70s with sewerage that had to be diverted away from St. Ives. Very big job in those days. The beaches now are pristine Clean . Sad all those boats gone from past days. We stayed on camping coaches that came up to the train station. Brown and cream old train carriges. Its car park now. The line where they sat was taken back a way. Or we stayed on Hayle Towans. We loved it there in the dunes as children. Very wonderful memories. We list our Mum last year. She adored St. Ives. Bless her.
My home town- moved to St Ives 16 years ago and never regretted it for 1 second ❤️
The Small Birds are Turnstones, and have much better manners than the Seagulls. 🙂
So pleased you visited St. Ives. My parents took us there once a year for our holls, we loved it. The little birds are Turnstones.
I loved this video and it prompted me and my wife to visit the wonderful St. Ives again this weekend just gone. (Feb 4th, 2023) We live in Devon and also love Cornwall, hence my Ident. (Devon and Cornwall flags)
Like your other 'Gimbal Walk TV' videos, I find your subject matter and especially your style of written comments which are informative, amusin, off the cuff and often funny. Here are my views on this one...
At 3mins, 47secs into the video, Porthminster was a great place to start the walk. Close to the railway station and although Carbis Bay beach is superb, it would have been too far away to start. On our visit, wanting to retrace your steps, we were unable to climb the steps up to the locked shelter because the tide was too far in! Oh well, great start...😏
4mins, 00secs. Yes, these are seated shelters where, in the summer, people can sit and enjoy the view of the beach. It's locked off season to stop anti social activities by some.
5mins, 52secs. Sorry you didn't see any grey seals. On a previous visit to St. Ives I was lucky enough to see three seals playing in the sea from the end of Smeaton's Pier when the tide was in. They seemed to enjoy the attention from us who were looking down and watching them.
6mins, 29secs. Just so you know, Land's End isn't the most southerly point of the United Kingdom. That would be 'Lizard Point', located on the Lizard Peninsular (south east of Land's End), which has that distinction.
6mins, 55secs. Loved your icon on the stone wall. It wasn't there on Sunday when I as there... I wonder why? Only joking, LOL!
9mins, 33secs. These small birds are called 'Turnstones'. We also have them in my home town of Paignton. (Loved your video there, too!) They're so tame. I often go down to Preston Beach where they flock on the seafront. Beautiful creatures, they migrate, apparently to Greenland for the summer and return again in the autumn.
10mins, 51 secs.The sound of the sea really is calming and relaxing. It's said that the sound, like white noise, reminds people subconsciously, of the sound inside the womb before we're born. Makes sense to me.
11mins, 22scs. This section of the pathway, by the toilets/restrooms, is actually called 'Lambeth walk' after the old song sung by Londoners. And the toilets/restrooms here are first class. They're immaculate inside. When I used the Gents, there was actually an attendant inside cleaning the place. And the place was free to enter and use! Well done St. Ives!!
12mins, 56secs. The Lifeboat Station is usually open to the public in the summer during the day. On one visit, I was able to go inside and actually climb some stairs and go onto a walkway beside the boat and look inside. Fantastic!
14mins, 06secs. The term 'seagull' is a misnomer. There are many types of gull and these particular ones are called 'Herring Gulls'. Us locals don't like them much because the can be a dirty, noisy, aggressive and a dangerous menace. (Sorry if that offends, but it's true).
15mins, 43secs. Parking in St. Ives is difficult, so you were lucky. There is, however, a sports hall close by with a car park/parking lot and there is a free (I think free) bus service into the town.
16mins, 09secs. That Balcony Bar looks great. I've never used it, but when we were in St. Ives we had lunch at a place called The Union Inn. It's in Fore Street in the middle of the town and the food was superb. My wife and I had rump steak with all the trimmings and it was amazing. They were very friendly and even included a bottle of a decent wine for the total price of £28 and a few pence. 😋
20mins, 51secs. A few years ago, we had Sunday lunch at the Sloop. It was okay, though a little pricey at the time. They were friendly too. Worth a visit. As well as the films you mentioned, there was a time travel sci-fi book series titled 'The Time Bubble' by Jason Ayres that features The Sloop in one of the volumes. A light read, but amusing nonetheless.
21mins, 31secs. Superb pasties! Us locals to Devon and Cornwall don't call them 'Cornish Pasties'. Just 'Pasties'. They're usually so much better in Cornwall than in Devon though. We bought a couple in the town to eat on the train going back home. Yummy.
24mns, 59 secs. No! Gulls flying. Down here we see them rats with wings. They look nice, but we think they're total pests.
25mins, 55secs. That's very true. The sand in St. Ives is beautiful. So much better even than we have here in Paignton, and ours isn't bad at all.
26mins, 15 secs. I copied you and went into the middle arch and peeped through the hole in the timber barrier. This time there was a small family playing and paddling there. It really is a lovely little beach.
27mins, 32 secs. It was about here that I found some sea glass on the sand. It's legal to pick them up and take them away because, unlike pebbles and rocks, it's considered to be litter as they come from glass bottles that have been in the sea a very long time and worn smooth. Local artists often use them in their work.
27mins, 53secs. And that's a shame because having holiday lets and holiday homes can turn the place into a ghost town in the winter. It destroys community spirit and inflates the property prices to the point that locals cannot afford to buy homes there.
34mins, 30 secs. And this is the place where I saw those seals playing in the sea all those years ago. What an amazing place St. Ives is. The drone footage at the end truly put the icing on the cake.

Guard your pasty ! On one occasion , I felt a firm tap on my left shoulder , I turned , ……..then felt my newly bought pasty being removed swiftly and deftly from the fingers of my right hand .I’d only had one bite .
Just found this channel, and had to check out the St.Ives video. My best friend and I brought our teenagers here as I used to come down every year as a kid. We had to give them their first experience with a real Cornish pasty! We found a little place a street or two behind the harbour front there, and the pasties were a big hit with the kids!! I even took one on a six hour drive home for hubby. Cornwall is amazing and everyone should visit at least once in their life. Now I want a pasty and a cold cider...😋
I enjoyed watching the video tour, have been here about 4 times, the first time we had to park up at the leisure centre up the road/hill, it's a massive carpark with views all the way round St Ives so we took pictures!. They have a shuttle bus that goes down to the town and I think its every 20 minutes, or you can walk down, but it's quite steep and takes about 20 minutes to the town. We kept missing the bus, so we walked down it was just about dinnertime and so we decided to buy 2 cornish pasties and sat down, as soon as we started to eat the seagulls swooped down to try and pinch them, we put up with it for about 15 20 minutes then decided to go further into the town to somewhere quieter to eat in peace, thought there would be less seagulls around because there all at the seafront with all the other visitors. Later after looking round we had to walk back up to van to put shopping in, it took ages! and very tiring and I had to have a rest in van. We went back down to go to a ghost walk with Ian Addicott who was in episode of most haunted Cornwall with Richard felix, I have an interest in the paranormal/hauntings etc and really enjoyed it! Ian Addicott is a very interesting person and had lots of true ghost stories to tell. I've seen him twice in St Ives and once in Penzance, I love the history and the stories of ghosts and smuggling, I have tried to find out whether Ian Addicott is still doing the ghost walks after the pandemic and it's been two years!,but can't find anything about it!.I love Cornwall and all the little old fashioned towns and villages and the little cobbled streets, so pretty and interesting to explore!

It's a shame you didn't get as far as Porthgwidden, Porthmeor and Clodgy though.They are equally beautiful, as is Downalong , with cobbled streets and tiny fishermen's cottages.
I used to work at Porthminster Beach during the school holidays - best fun I had at a job, ever! I think that shelter is probably closed up due to undesirable behaviour but I wouldn't swear to it. I remember the deck chair attendants used to have to check the canvas beach tents every morning for drunks and druggies sleeping rough, but the tents are long gone, so maybe this shelter was used in a similar way? I remember being able to sit in that shelter on the bench, way back when. I've not been there for a long time - I wonder if they only chain it up in the winter and then re-open it in summer? I've no idea these days - I can't get around like I used to, so I watch videos instead - thanks for that! 😃
Idyllic place.....over full from what I read....great to see this as I never got that far with my work...
I have been visiting St Ives for over 50 years and still enjoy it. Some things are the same - the arcade and beaches. However since the advent of the Tate Gallery it has become very “sophisticated” and less family orientated. The sea is a lot cleaner since they built the sewage works and stopped discharging into the sea.

We would like to say a big thank you for this tour around St. Ives. My wife and I will be there in September. What we would really like to know is if anyone could recommend any restaurants/pubs/bars etc that have evening entertainment. To have some live music or even cabaret/singers/ comedians while having your evening meal is a real highlight on any holiday and is often the one thing that is missing. We would certainly value your recommendations. Thank you, John.
Wonderful tour. I'd forgotten how beautiful St Ives is. Well it must be nearly 50 years since I visited, when my children were small. We lived in Portsmouth then and Cornwall and Devon, plus the Isle of Wight, were our holiday destinations. Now, like you, I live in Yorkshire which I also love. I'd love to see some walks on the Isle of Wight if you get the chance, or some of the beautiful gardens in England. Now I don't travel much I love to see the different places you go to.

Yes you can't eat yr fish and chips outside any more. Sea gulls dive bomb you. X St. Ives is in my soul. We played in those little tunnels as children.

Actually, Ardnamurchan Point in Scotland is the most westerly point on the UK mainland. Land's End is the most south-westerly

St. Ives is the best place on earth (in my opinion). The narrow little roads that are behind the harbour with all the little cottages are lovely too.
I agree with you. My siblings still all love it. My brothers used to fish off the harbours caught Sea bass and soul fish. Fond happy memories. Xx

@ 4 minutes in those were shelters that had to be locked up with railings to stop people from boozing and sleeping rough there. There was a lot of that happening in the 90’s with the traveler’s kicking about.

One of the loveliest Cornish towns with so much to see and do. My weirdest experience in St Ive's was a perfectly sunny day suddenly changing with a thick cold sea fog that rolled in, enveloping the town. You could only see a few feet in front of you, it was like something from a movie, very eerie.

You asked why they lock the shelters above Porthminster Beach. It's probably to deter people sleeping rough in there. Donovan, the musician, slept rough in there during the early 60s. When I first visited family in St Ives (1973) there were still people sleeping in those shelters (beatniks/hippies) and in nearby woods.

Look carefully for Hoppy the one legged turnstone , he's lived quite happily being fed by the locals around the post office waterfront coffee shops. He's got a friend Hoppy2 with only one foot, but two legs.
I fed them most mornings early-ish and they flourish healthy living the dream.
It's illegal to feed the gulls. But the Hoppy's arent gulls.

17:41 Visited in April and perhaps the blustery weather made the harbour area feel just a little bit tired - a jumble of shops. Mood wasn’t improved by eating a whole crab at the Rum and Crab shack which when picked up embedded dozens of tiny spines in my hand. Clearly the crab should have been cleaned first. For me the attraction of Cornwall is a great seafood restaurant and views of the stunning coastline. The towns are mostly so so.

Also, there is stunning cliff walking that has perculier ramshackle sheds/beach huts in what seem like inaccessible places.
i was told by a local that Mermaids sheltered in them when they grew legs for a day once year.
Not sure I believed her.

My first time of visiting St. Ives I went with my children who were very young at the time. We stayed at my pen friends guest house. I’ve been back several times on day trips as my daughter lives in Cornwall.

Oh trust me, they would. Recently, someone tried to steal one of the St Ives Fisherman's Christmas lights. They've had the lights deliberately tampered with in previous years too. It's not totally horrendous there compared with many places, but it certainly isn't perfect and totally sweet and innocent either. Sadly, it's like anywhere you go - you always tend to find the one or two who like to ruin it for the majority of people. It's not new - I know that in the 70's and 80's they used to get called out to the beach occasionally during the night (by the police) due to break-ins and they would sometimes find drunks/druggies sleeping rough in the tents, sometimes tents or beach huts were vandalised. They still get people having a beach party and leaving their bottles and crap there for someone else to clear up - or leaving their rubbish on Man's Head, etc, etc, etc. The few getting off their face and spoiling things for the many. Nothing new under the sun, unfortunately - St Ives isn't immune from the occasional idiot or two. Heaven knows I went to school with some prime candidates who didn't change when they reached "adult" age. I seriously believe slack parenting "skills" have a lot to answer for. Oops, unintentional rant over lol.

Best to visit in winter or spring, it gets incredibly busy and hot in summer, climbing up and down the steep hills. In summer it is a challenge to avoid piles of vomit, litter, dogs mess, fish&chip paper, spilled ice creams, collapsed people etc. The amount of facilities is not sufficient for the amount of visitors these days. Many people faint or get heat stroke in summer and need medical attention.
