I saw a youtube vid or two titled that this episode was lore garbage or something to that effect. I couldnt bring myself to click on the videos despite being curious as to how they drew those conclusions.
Light: "lets peace out bro" Darkness: "hang on bro I wanna break the moon before we leave" Light: "sorry wat" Darkness: "LOL LOOK I BROKE IT HAHAHAHAHA"
"So long as this world turns, you shall walk its face." Here I think we see the core of Salem's plan. Her last attempt to finally die. When the relics are united and the gods summoned, they may destroy the entire world then. So Salem is keeping humanity divided and gathering the relics for that time. So that when the gods are called, Humanity will be shown as irredeemable.
It might be a win/win scenario for her. Either she gets the relics and takes over everything, becoming the new god of the world while summoning back the brothers to rub it in their faces or she is finally able to die and move on. There is literally no losing for her here.
@@noahorakwue2653 kind of the same mindset as Adam in a way. Pure and utter spite is what drives them, Salem is just more honest with herself about it.
tenofprime I'm not sure about that Ozpin and Salem might still love each other or not but while Salem spent years trying to find a way to die Oz had the means to do so and refused. If Oz wanted to end his eternity he could have brought the relics together ages ago and been done with it but he chose to endure not for Salem but for humanity.
23:41 I highly doubt that they were the maidens, but I believe Ozpin gave the maidens their power partly because they reminded him of his four lost daughters.
"We can't disrupt the balance and resurrect your love" Gives Salem Immortality Wipes out humanity Gives her love Oz the ability to reincarnate Ok.....um......quick quesh.....what exactly is the balance here?
I am with you there. The God of Light pretty much broke his own rule of resurrecting someone and messing with the balance of life just to fix the mistake He did himself.
From what I gathered, the "balance" they are talking about is actually an agreement the two brothers made between them to not interfere with each other. In other words, "balance" means maintaining balance between the gods, not humanity or the world. The God of light refused to resurrect oz because it would have broken their agreement and gone against what he and his brother decided. The god of dark did do it because he didn't know his brother had already said no. As soon as he realized, he fixed his mistake. They granted Salem immortality as punishment for trying to deceive them since being without her love was the greatest punishment they could give her at the time. Both brothers agreed to this, so what ever deal they made to keep balance between them was maintained. Similarly with the destruction of humanity, both brothers agreed that humanity was lost at this point. The god of dark decided it was time to do the equivalent of a hard reset. The god of light was mournful of this but agreed with his brother. Their balance between them was thus maintained. Oz was granted the chance to bring the gods back, presumably at the behest of the god of light. Given how they have acted up until now, I assume his brother agreed to this as well. In short, balance is just making sure one of them doesn't do anything without the others approval.
@@antoniobeltranthesumosnipe8634 True. But if you pay attention to Ozma and God of Light's conversation, you see that Ozma interrupted the deity speak before fully speaking about everything. Sounds familiar to a certain redhead?
@@antoniobeltranthesumosnipe8634 Oz had more choice than Pyrrha. He initially denies the chance but when the God mentions he can't see Salem in the afterlife he accepts the offer.
Here's how I see Ozpin and Salem's daughters, and the four Maidens. Ozpin and Salem's daughters were all killed in the crossfire as their parents fought each other on that fateful night in the castle. Who knows *how* many years later, Ozpin, now an old hermit, met four young women, who each resembled his long lost beloved daughters so much, that he eventually decided to gift them with magic.
@@zackrose6261 I absolutely agree! The guy deserves so many hugs and f-ing "Thank you's" for everything he's done to stop, to foil, to hinder Salem's plans throughout the centuries, if not millennia. The guy's far from being perfect, sure, but no one is, no matter how old and experienced they get. Why has Salem not conquered Remnant yet? Answer; Ozpin and those who've helped him fight Salem throughout the centuries.
Hey Puns, I was wondering if you would consider reacting to Claymore or to Violet Evergarden. Both are fairly cool shows with Violet being a more heartfelt and lovely show compared to the action of Claymore. I would advise reading the manga for Claymore as the anime cuts off midway through it i believe. Either way, Just thought that I would offer some suggestions for the breaks between RWBY episodes and such or to watch in your own downtime. Have a great day.
Fair warning - have several boxes of tissues if you are going to watch Violet Evergarden. It's been months since I watched it, and I still get the feels thinking about it.
Fun things to ponder - - Ozma's later reincarnation that had a family, look at his kids - they have silver eyes. Coincidence? - Salem falling into the fountain of life was very similar to Cinder falling into the pool below the vault. - Cinder had stated the Vault of the Spring Maiden was unusually ornate and wondered what the extra effort was for. - The Realm of Light contained a pool and a tree of golden leaves. - The Vault of the Spring Maiden contained a pool and a tree of golden leaves. - The "dragon continent" is shaped like the dragon form of the God of Darkness and has been speculated as being where Salem is located for years now. - Anima's western coastline is shaped like an Eastern dragon, much like the God of Light's dragon form. - As shown when humanity is being annihilated, the blast originates from the mountains. So, if the pools of destruction still remain, does the fountain of life? If so, could it be that the reason for the Vault being so ornate was because it was built atop the Fountain of LIfe and incorporated whatever remained of that tree? Haven is at the top of the mountain, after all. If so, being that the pools of destruction imbued Salem with the essence of destruction and the fountain of life made her immortal, is it possible that Raven did kill Cinder when she was frozen solid, but that the fountain of life is what she fell into and it brought her back to life? If so, would she now be immortal as well? Could she end up being a wildcard that turns against Salem, creating a foe she cannot kill and therefore helps her learn the importance of life and death? "You must learn the importance of life and death, only then may you rest." Salem cannot be destroyed because of her immortality, but the gods specified how her immortality can be ended. This is what my brain does when I've had too much caffeine and not enough sleep, only to watch RWBY before finally passing out...
Nice Thought-process man. I thought About this too and it seems at least possible... But remember: the fountain was in the open and the vault has a veeeery high ceeling! Would it be Logical to create an artificial cave like that instead of just searching for an already existing cave? Well Maybe if you had strong magic, but remember that Ozpins magic must have been already weakend when he built the Schools. (Sry for Maybe bad Grammar. At some days English isn't my strong Card.)
Ozpin and Salem are as human as all of us. It's a strange sensation to humanise heroes and villains and define the cause of their conflict to be so simple. So human. True tragedies in the world are caused, not by right and wrong, but by two rights. I could not truly hate Ozpin or Salem after this episode. In truth I cannot blame either.
I can blame both. As people. Because they let their grief and revenge roll over entire continents. They did human things, but on a scale they should not have the power to. And salem especially she took months to gather armies to try defeat the gods. She was literally told how to end her life but decided to skinny dip in liquid destruction instead. And yeah. Those are human faults. But wyen people make mistakes on that scale. They get the blame. And the consequences of it. I empathize with them both. But if i could. I would wipe both from existance once and for all and let people try carry on with their lives. Salem and ozpins philosophical dispute has evolved into a world war. And there is no making that okay.
Holy... But if HER Crown was the relic of choice… how did Pyrrha get it? She owned the Crown before coming to Beacon? And if her Crown really IS the relic… wouldn't it be indestructible? I mean… made from the gods and this stuff?
@@blakechandler167 yeah because attacking and then starting a war against the gods just because they didnt do what she demanded is totally justified. Mad with grief or not you dont get to make choices without consequences.
@@jittercritter very true. Oscar and ozpin and all those souls kinda got screwed in the transition. Ozma himself really did nothing wrong up front but die. He wasnt even involved in the apocalypse. After reincarnation though.. well a lot of mistakes were made. Exactly as ozpin had said.. Salems pain is understandable but she made a series of monumental mistakes in how she persued things. The gods told her how to get out of her curse but she elected not to listen.
As with the old stories of djinn, wording was always very important. Ospin/Ozma asked the wrong question. He specifically asked "How do I destroy Salem?", and gets told "You can't.". Notably it isn't said that it can't be done, only that he couldn't do it. But asking if Salem could be destroyed also seems to not be the right question for a few reasons. Firstly, asking how to do it would have been a better way to go about it. Secondly, destroying Salem I believe isn't the pertinent course of action. Salem's curse of immortality can only be broken when she understands the importance of life and death. The knowledge to be sought out is how if at all can Salem redeem herself and break her curse, along with how humanity can become united. I don't know if either of those things are even possible, but it seems like the right path to prevent judgement. This season definitely has me in a fog as to what will happen next, but I'm certainly enjoying the ride!
Figure out space travel (I know they can't use Dust), chuck her in the sun, see what happens (kinda doubt she can hit escape velocity if her fight with Ozma #2 didn't just level everything) God of Light might get a little pissy about the whole "walk its surface" thing if anyone was ever dumb enough to summon him though.
I can't help but feel awful for Salem. She just wanted the love that was taken from her back and the gods saw it as a bad investment. She was cursed to live forever, she tried suicide, duels, and much more to die, but she can't. She tried so hard and eventually it ruined her mind, her body, and it ruined the world. I never thought Ozpin was in the wrong, nor have I ever thought Salem in the right, but I feel awful for the poor girl that was ruined by everything.
i am with you. if it was specified how much they were together before ozma fell ill. and it was a few years i am ok about the life and death balance speech. However if they have been together for only like a few months like screw the gods. it wouldnt break the balance to just take half of salem's remaining lifespan and revive ozma with that ammount of life remaining . Hell , take it all of salems lifespan , revive ozma and tell em you have 10/20 years . make em count. the balance would only be broken if they made them immortal -.-. like how in the end they did. I understand not wanting to give every being in Pre-remnant immortality as the resources are finite. Also the gods are such hypocrites. they want ozma to create a perfect world when they themselves have failed. There are wars (the battlefield scenary salem and ozma pass through) and there abusive people like salem's parents who locked her in a tower. Also the god of death is an asshole to the moon for no reason. Also ozmin could have been honest about his task and then salem would have also confessed. then they would agree the gods suck so lets not summon them back ever and they would live happily ever after. Everyone is to blame for this situation. 30% god of light , 35% god of darkness ( 5% more for the moon), 20% ozma(5% extra for sneaking the kids out. way to enfuriate your super powered wife), 15% for salem. thats how i would devide the blame PS. the dust is either moon fragments( enriched with god of darkness aura) or the remains of the previous humanity. Boy will weiss question herself if her family has mined people's remaines in crystalised form.
@@Clorgisclorg and why should she? From her point of view she doesn't have a lesson to learn. She wanted her love back and was willing to do anything to see him again. I personally think the gods were being assholes, they basically got into a fight when Salem asked them both to help and they decided to take out that anger on her. Why shouldn't she ask both of them? The way the god of light talked it sounded like he couldn't do it and was unwilling.
megaidiot95 I disagree that they would of just made it work if they had been honest with each other I think that it could of made it worked for a while to some extent but I think Salem by time they both became gods to the people of remnant she would still become evil and want to bring about the end of humanity cause sorry to get all star warsy but she was still angry at the gods and anger leads to hatred and hatred leads to darkness
Well, I would say Ozma had to go thorugh the states of grief once he got killed by the love of his life, aknowledging, that the woman he loves is no more. What remains of her is, in his eyes, pure evil and since he fought for the righteous cause all his life, he wants to rid the world of evil. But then he is told, that this is beyond possible, he cannot rid the world of the evil that is embodied by his former wife. So now his goal is to bring humanity closer together by hosting sports events, enabeling communication and diplomacy between kingdoms and so on and so forth. All hope is not lost, but his task just got a fucking hell of a lot harder, because making humanity at large act less selfish and short sighted is a pretty tough thing to do... Just look at the news and you know what I am talking about. This show can tell us something about ourselves and the way we live together. Ozma and Salem in our world are just not people, they are ideas. There is so so much in the RWBY universe that can be found in our very own world, it is almost scary.
There's a weird dichotomy here that I don't really agree with. Salem isn't evil. Even the god of darkness himself isn't really evil. They're both very human. And humans can make mistakes and take paths that are selfish. Really, I can say I perfectly understand Salem. She was imprisoned for all her life and the only comfort she found was taken away. She went to any means to get that back and was cursed in the process, very much doomed to be "alone" in immortality. Her actions after that were deceitful and selfish but well-founded. She was then alone for a second time until humanity came about again. Finally, Oz came back to her, the one person she loved, and she had peace for a few years. Again, in her eyes, he was going to leave her alone, even taking her children. She really has no hope against defeating the gods or overthrowing them; she really just wants to be left to die and what's standing in her way is the whole world. So, given that she has nothing left, she'll destroy the world to rest in peace. It's sort of the mentality of someone who doesn't feel she has anyone to rely on in the world; I feel like that's where our "simple, honest soul" will come into play.
@@CrimsonOdachi Yea, good and evil the whole black and white thinking is a pretty bad thinking, because no matter how evil one is there will be good in them. Just like how there is evil in good people. While I'd say the grimmified Salem is more evil then good though. Salem really just needs someone to set her straight. :/ I've also been arguing with someone on another video stating salem can't lose it's hopeless just because she is immortal. I think people need to learn that immortality is not invincibility.
@@zackrose6261 Ultimately, I don't think this story should end in some grand battle where Salem loses. It needs something better than that. I really do think Salem is entirely redeemable, perhaps by Ruby and Cinder, and that will be what puts an end to this.

We won't see it on screen, but when everyone sleeps, Yang cries very loud and everyone comes into her room to see her. She tells everyone that her mother is dead and when they ask her, how she can know this… she turns her head and they can see the flames coming out of her eyes… Sorry, I f...ng love Raven as a character… but this scene would be awesome...
Ozma has been playing the longest game of Keep Away in history to prevent the literal judgement day from happening, because there's nothing he can do to really stop Salem. Shit sucks. I really feel as though he still gets too much hate directed at him. He has been beaten into a corner for hundreds, maybe thousands of years and can't think of a better way to save humanity. While he's not perfect in this endeavor, cut the poor guy some slack. He's probably stopped Salem from wiping everyone from existence hundreds of times over. That's gotta count for something, right?
@@zackrose6261 Yeah. I'm kind of disappointed in Team Rwby at the moment. I mean, Oz has been at this for hundreds of years. If he knew the solution to this he'd have done it by now. And like, what else would they have him do? Sit back and let Salem bring doomsday? Sure, many have died in this crusade, but the fact that anyone is still alive and kicking is literally because of him.
I propose that Salem's overall goal is either to gain the ultimate powers of the relics and summon back the brothers to rub it in their faces, to strike out against them once again in her bitterness. And, even if she fails, she'd hopefully die and move on. It's a win-win scenario for her.
So glad I caught this before the block XD! Your and MurderOfBirds' reactions are the ones I look forward to the most each week, you're so awesome and insightful and I love your laugh :D .
I heard an amazing theory and I think it makes so much sense. People died from the hands of the gods turn to ash and now new humans have crystals of dust capable of magic. DUST CRYSTALS ARE PEOPLE
I have my doubts purely based on the quantity of dust that exists. And how deep in the ground they are mined from. I think maybe tge shards of the moon are acting like catalysts. A parting gift from the god that gave them magic to begin with
I mean her core idea of "screw the gods" may not have been wrong, but her lying and tricks did get her cursed and everyone murdered, and she's been killing a lot of people since. So yeah she's completely wrong.
well, if i was a deity who made all these suckers and they tried to kill him, then idk but i would be pretty ticked if these guys all tried to off me for greed alone
honestly, Salem can be seen as correct before the dip into the pool of evil. (since all she did is realise that the gods are assholes and started a revolution against them!) but after that dip, she could've been corrupted by the pool to be more destructive!
@@CarbonMage actually you kind of do. Choice carries consequence. You stick your hand in a wasp nest and You get stung. You try stab someone, they defend themselves. You try fist an ursa you lose an arm. Declare war on the gods Get smote. The gods did not prevent any choice being made. As far as is shown they did not involve themselves in human lives or society. The left humans to self govern as they pleased. They did not remove free will and send the humans back home. They did not remove humanity's capacity to try to attack. The choice was made. And by slapping the gods with their own magic (note that it only magic is mentioned as a gift from the gods. Not any other part of creation, Or humanity itself.) The humans decided to declare war on the gods with the largest slap in the face imaginable. Japan paid less offense to america and they still got nuked, twice. Also salems rebellion was based on lies and misinformation. A corruption of knowledge. And ultimately, the rebellion was a resounding success. They wanted to overthrow and cast out the gods. Well, Congratulations. Gods gone. Magic gone with them. And humanity given a somewhat clean slate. And sure it was kind of overkill to kill the entire human race of the time. But also understandable. Since the god of darkness clearly likes overkill. But also what alternative is there? Just blow up the rebels? Salem would just build a new army spinning more lies. And if the truth was told humanity's survivors would likely be stuck with the sensation of "dont misbehave or we nuke you." And end up having their freedom subsumed by fear. The other option being they just leave without killing anyone and leave salem alone holding a lot of empty promises she will have to make good on. Also i think the dusting had something to do with magic. As only humans got dusted and the humans who rose up later on, had no magic. Except for the two people who "survived" so perhaps it was just the only way to take back the gift.
This is gonna be an essay of a post about why *_The gods are dicks._* (note: i said dicks, not _evil_ ) The balance of life and death thing is the only thing i agree with them on. In fact, all gods are dicks. No deity really possesses the emotional understanding towards their charges to be anything less. Its like having an ant farm. Sure you might not immediately kill them and thats cool, but you are physically incapable of understanding an ants mind or life. You will always feel so vastly superior, that it doesn't really matter if its in a "benevolent" way. Being good by "allowing" people to live, is still fucked up morally. You cant connect with them, or feel for them, except in the most abstract, pitying way. Notice that the "good" god was actually the more out of touch. He didn't say he cared about salem when she first showed up, even in a vague "a king cares for all his subjects" way. No. He specifically said he _pitied_ her. The dark god, even with and even _because_ of his flaws and feelings of inadequacy towards his older brother, actually hits more emotional, human notes than the god of light. They're still arrogant and not understanding of humanity. Humanity is incapable of not causing conflict, because things like free will exist, and they were created that way. If you are sentient enough to understand that you are capable of doing things for your own benefit at the cost of others, so to will you be aware that others can do the same. Even in the most Good hearted person, there would still be distrust towards others to a point The gods are the same, incapable of being truly on each others side unless fighting a common enemy--salem. In this episode alone, they demonstrate their hypocrisy. They can fight and be in conflict and not be punished, but humans cant. In fact, i daresay that if there were more than 2 gods--enough for a "species", then the gods would find themselves fighting among each other just the same as humans. The only reason they dont fight with human is because it would be like 2 humans fighting an ant farm--its so easy theres no point. And salems punishment is the stupidest punishment if they wanted her to learn. (And it undermines everything they said about the balance of life and death. They wouldnt unbalance it to help a human, but they completely unbalanced it (killing everyone, making salem immortal, bringing back oz) to _spite_ a human.) It was always only ever about pride for them. They're the all powerful gods, did they really think that to give her power like that, and leaving her with only negative experiences with them, that shes suddenly going to decide not to fuck with the gods, which she was perfectly willing to do as a regular human? No. That is a punishment designed to make her suffer. And sure she had used their gift against them, but they also were clearly in no real danger. To them, it was a matter of pride and nothing else. They wanted to be worshipped, and when humans didnt want to worship them, instead of just leaving the humans to their own devices, they obliterated every single one for the actions of a relative few. Idk about you, but if i gave a bunch of children water guns out of the kindness of my heart, and they went and shot me with water bc they didnt like me later, I'd take the water guns away maybe, but i wouldn't murder them. "But they were actually trying to kill the gods!!" Yeah and the kids could've been actually trying to kill me with water guns, the point is, i was never in any real danger, no matter the intent so i obviously wouldnt murder the kids in retaliation. The gods obviously knew that they would have no effect on them. And they decided the punishment for a useless murder attempt by a few was the successful murder of everyone. Fuck that. Were we meant to actually root for these guys? To cheer at the punishment they gave salem? PLUS sending oz to kill her, knowing who she was to him, instead of just doing it themselves. Whether they gave him a choice or not, much like oz with pyrrha, it wasnt much of a choice, with many details omitted. Notice the god of light even failed to mention any part that he had played in the situation, deflecting all blame to his brother, as if he hadnt sat back and let, and likely even approved of, his brother killing everyone. At that point they surely had realized she wasnt _learning_ anything, but do they clean up the mess themselves? No. They send her husband/lover, who had done literally nothing wrong at that point, to do it for them and die (over and over again) trying. Fuck the gods. Even the whole "one last chance" thing is one more thing to yank humanities chain. They've literally given oz an impossible task. Someone tried to say they had "rules" but they are the ones who make the rules, they could literally do whatever they want. They chose it to be the way it is. Even the balance thing turned out to be useless because they quickly both revived someone (and made sure it would happen again and again), obliterated everyone, and made someone immortal. It seems the whole "balance must be maintained" was more "eh this isnt a good enough reason to shift the balance" Tldr: the gods are dicks, and this episode has me convinced that not bringing the relics together would be for the best
I like the way they didn't make it just a generic lovers quarrel. Salem doesn't want to kill Oz simply because he tried to leave her, but because he defied her. She's a surprisingly sympathetic villain, or at least her in the beginning.
Getting in now before its blocked, I need the good vibes also thank you mentioning that just because you mention Bumblebee does not mean you cant like Sun
I agree. I don't know why people think liking one thing means you have to hate another. Though I do admit to having this weird pet peeve to people using "BlackSun" for Blake/Sun instead of "Eclipse" for some reason, lol.
I love that Oz is presented as basically a good hearted hero through all of this. It explains why he was chosen to be the steward. The parts that make him shady are all the things he's done while building defenses and loosely organizing all of humanity to help fight a war that cannot be won.
Ozma made one big mistake and that was trying to kill Salem instead of trying to work with her and heal her pain. He was sent back to redeem humanity and he couldn't redeem his own love?!? That and keeping secrets from her when they first met. Funny how he didn't learn from that.
@@liminaut also ozma was dead during those attempted suicides. Its likely he never knew. I think there were a few things in Jinn's vision that ozma/ozpin didnt know about that morning
Salem did NOT act out of Love. She Acted out of Childish petty Selfishness. If all she wanted was to be with Ozma, then when the God of Light denied her request to bring him back, she could have asked to be united with him in the Afterlife. A request that the GoL could have easily granted without it disrupting the life/death balance he established with his brother. Instead She Threw a Tantrum like a Petulant Child whose favorite toy was taken away from them and Decided that is SHE can't have her way, she will burn down the place. Contrast that with Ozma who asked to be in the Afterlife, to be With the woman he Truly loved, and when informed that she was on Remnant, chose to join her even when the GoL told his that she no longer the woman he loved. Salem's lack of Grace is what ultimately Doomed her and the world with her.
I have a theory that at least one daughter survived and her watered down magic (from having offspring with non-magical people) became semblances. Time will probably prove me wrong but I guess we'll see.
Gods were like "Let's make extreme choice to make her understand our point." Salem got to the extreme and Ozma (ozpin) got the other extreme... For me it was like why did Ozma and Salem were that far... Why wouldn't they just live happily ever after...
You know, it didnt dawn on me until last night, but when Jinn said that she can answer two more questions, i THINK i know who asked the first question: Raven. Think about it: she said the more secrets uncovered, the more horrifying the world gets. Something among those lines. Either way, how else could she have known about Ozpin's past?
I know tons of people have brought it up, but the specific wording of that question is some classic Genie shenanigans. "How do I destroy Salem?" "You can't." Ozpin can't. That doesn't mean she can't be destroyed by someone else. There is also the possibility of stopping her without destroying her. EDIT: Also that moment when Ozpin and Salem's conflict is the craziest custody battle in history.
She survived the God of Darkness wiping out all of humanity. I highly doubt anyone can actually destroy her so long as she is immortal. But, as you said, stopping her without destroying her is an option.
I didn't take it that way actually. Don't take me the wrong way, I really love ur version, and I totally agree it's Genie shenanigans. Where u put emphasis on U, I put emphasis on Destroy. "U can't *destroy* her" meaning u have to change her. Change her heart or her ways, break the curse perhaps. Bringing her back is possible, but destroying her is not.
@@xXSamir44Xx They will be able to beat her, Salem fucked up when she had 4 children. The 4 team rwby girls will end up being the 4 maidens in the end and they will beat salem, it's foreshadowed. Come back to me when im right and then ask me "how the fuck did you know this".
I think it is not like "light" and "dark" situation the reason why Salem cannot die. I think it is simple. Only the gods can kill her. And for that, Oz has to summon them. But then... if he summons them, they will judge humanity. So there lies the problem.
“You must learn the importance of life and death, only then may you rest” Volume 6 chapter 4 QRWBY’s takeaway: “Blah blah blah blah, Salem can’t be killed, Oz sucks, blah blah blah blah” (Sigh)
I think it'll still be true that nobody except the gods can destroy her. But the gods did tell her what she needed to learn in order to break her curse, so really the only one who can destroy her is herself. And the *right* question to ask is: "how do we *save* Salem?"
29:00 ...Or, on a slightly more horrifying note, those original four children of Ozma and Salem inherited his reincarnation power, fueled by the both of their parents having magic, but between dying so young and the influence of the destruction infused in Salem, they don't retain memories or personality...thus leaving the 'Maidens' as simply unconscious accumulations of magic and instincts.
This chapter was packed with so much good info, I'm still dealing with the fact that they answered all these questions. The gods were very interesting to see, especially since we know they both have domains on Remnant (The one of the God of Dark is currently now Salem's). I wonder where the one for the God of Light is? Because that would be a very important place that's been lost. That and how the two gods are presented add to how different the two are, especially with how contorted the God of Dark's body was when he emerged from the pool. Another great thing is that even though the God of Dark did bring Ozma back when he shouldn't have, he also did not want to dishonour the agreement he had with his brother. It shows they aren't the cliche gods we see in other shows and media where they have a disagreement and fight until the others die, instead putting aside their own personal interests and focusing on balancing the world of light and dark. Salem being the one who caused the gods to leave and destroy the moon is a satisfying answer to what happened to the moon. Adding to that it was because of the exodus of the gods opposed to their destruction, it was another great subversion of a cliche story beat that so many have done in the past. Ozma's choice to go back is one originally driven by his on selfish desire and while he does end up back with Salem for a time, due to everything that had happened to her, there was no way it could last, especially since they both kept secrets from one another, especially Ozma's task from the gods. If he had been honest from the beginning, I have a feeling that things would've gone much differently. The four children of Salem and Ozma, I do believe they are the original maidens, whether they lived or died when Salem got mad at Ozma doesn't matter because, most likely as a side effect of being the children of a person who changes bodies every time they die, their powers transfer from host to host. Finally, the answer that Salem can't be killed must have been such a crushing blow to Ozma when he found out. However, knowing that it would be impossible to stop her and still getting people to fight against her, that makes me question whether he cares about anything anymore and is just sending people to their deaths because they have no idea what to do. As we see, Salem doesn't seem to be trying to gather the gods, it's not in her interests. At the end of the day, neither Salem or Ozpin are good people, especially with how much they've done in their own personal war against one another. The sooner they stop their fighting, the better the world will be. Neither of them can win because they are opposites that need to balance the world. Hopefully we get to see both the fountains appear in the series again, especially since they're nexuses of the light and dark of the world, not going to either of them at all would be a big surprise for me, especially since I feel that Ruby might end up captured by Salem's forces at some point if the title sequence is to be believed, meaning at least the pool of darkness could be seen again. Finally, the animation on this chapter is by far some of the best in the entire series, the smoke effects especially being used to transition scenes. They all deserve credit for what they've done in this chapter. #TheMoonDidNothingWrong
Puns of Damage I think you're on to something with the coin analogy. Oz and Salem bring out the best and worst in each other. Now....how does RWBY deal with this?
Well for one I see Ozpin getting chewed out from almost all sides (Including Oscar in his "head") for basically denying "Knowledge" and "Choice" from not only them but all of humanity.
@@Chokah a good point though. Oz literally withheld important knowledge from the group. Not just the larger history but things vital to persons immediate survival. And with incomplete knowledge, choice becomes skewed. You cant make an informed decision if you arent informed. Pyrrha could be considered to have died due to key pieces of information ozpin decided she didnt need. I think she would have gone up anyway but she would have changed her fighting style. She would have known to to stall for time. And even a few more seconds might have been enough to get her out of there alive. And who knows how many other people died because oz didnt feel like telling them something?
The God of Light being an Eastern Dragon and the God of Darkness being a Western Dragon is pretty significant to their characters: In Eastern(Oriental) Culture, Dragons are chimerical creatures with Ox tails, Stag antlers and wingless, serpentine bodies with four limbs. Seen as benevolent deities who inhabit bodies of water of which they can manipulate into powerful storms, they represent wisdom, strength, harmony and good luck, and are revered so greatly that they were the symbol of the Chinese Emperor. These traits go perfectly for the God of Light, who's domain resides within a lake were life grows bountifully. However by contrast, in Western Culture, Dragons typically possessed lizard-like bodies, with six limbs (four legs and a pair of wings), spikes running down their backs, and horns. These creatures breathed both fire and toxins and represented a great evil that needed to be slain, normally by a knight blessed by God or a great Warrior from various myths. They are said to reside in mountains or caves, and no life dare inhabits near their homes. These traits befit the God of Darkness, whose domain is lifeless with pools of black muck that only the foul monsters called Grimm spawn from.
It's really nice to see a reactor who doesn't just default to "Salem was totally innocent, Oz is awful, and I wish she had succeeded in murdering the gods.
Ozma is another callback to the naming theme in Season 1; Ozma was the queen of Oz before Ozpin came to Oz and became the Wizard. In this case, Salem is the Wicked Witch of the West as well as Ozpin being The Wizard of Oz.
Best episode in the volume so far. We finally got so many answers and it was worth the wait. Ozpin or rather Osma at the time saved Salem from isolation and eventually both fell in love (I totally called it). And everything started because Osma died that Salem demanded to the Gods to revive him. I felt sorry for him when the Gods, the brothers were reviving, killing him and vice versa. Salem turning mankind against them it was expected and the end of the species because of her actions. The Gods leaving the world and the God of Darkness being responsible for destroying the Moon. So much for that theory that Summer Rose is the Moon lol. The Ozpin being brought back again by the God of Light telling him of his mission and the relics. How he was reunited with Salem, giving their a shot and from them the first four maidens were born. Then then struggle and how he will continue to reincarnate. This episode truly made me feel so sorry for Ozpin. The man has suffered enough and now with this burden. Salem is the one to blame for causing this big mess in the first place.
UGH YES FINALLY I CAN SEE REACTIONS! The next chapter (chapter 4) is shorter but ITS SO GOOD as well (you can see a bit of it in the new PROMO trailer I've put on my channel) BUT YES FINALLY THE LOREEE UGH. Love it. LOVE IT!

Ozpin's last question might also be a Monkey's paw situation, where he just asked the wrong question. He asked how HE could destroy Salem. Not if Salem could be destroyed. The question he asked may never have included the Maidens also trying to destroy Salem.
Love the detail they put in Oz asked how he could stop Salem not How can Salem be stopped. And Oz can’t stop her but what if a smaller more honest soul, a more innocent soul could sway the dark in Salem into the light.
The god of light gave Ozma/Ozpin an impossible task, by getting him to unite the people of remnant. If the relics were to be brought together and summon the gods, all of remnant would be destroyed. People are still fighting each other, and their is injustice done to the Faunus. People can change but not everyone can, do you see what I’m saying. Ozpin can’t stop Salem, only her learning the lesson of life and death can she finally die. Ozpin did the best he could with the hand he was dealt. So he had done what he can to try and make remnant a better place. Even if somehow the word was to unite and be better so the gods can comeback, someone as stubborn as Salem would demand something from the gods and would most likely lead to the same situation again. Those who don’t learn from the past are doomed to repeat it.
I get what your'e saying about needing to live with strife instead of getting rid of it, ie Salem is the way to go, but it's kind of a stacked deck since living in peace doesn't seem to stop Salem. The grimm are already there as apart of their world attacking people, Negative feelings attract the grimm and bring destruction, which breeds more negative feelings in a cycle. Ozmapin can do his best to unite humanity all he wants, but Salem is waiting to knock over his carefully stacked house of cards.
How you broke down Salem going through 3 of the 5 stages of grief and how having Ozman be brought back and destroyed in front of her and how that must have affected her mind are things I hadn't really considered. Thanks for pointing that out.
I’m actually with Salem on this one. Why bring back the Gods when you can be Gods? Salem and Oz could’ve ruled over humanity. Oz could’ve used his children to bring the peace among man like the god told him, since it was still on his mind. There’s so many ways he could’ve gone about it having humanity move forward into peace or just rule over them. He fucked up the moment he decided to take the kids 🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️
I'm with both of them to a degree. Ozpin obviously wants that supposed peaceful time, but Salem wanted to have it as she wanted. Peaceful, but the ways of getting was not. It's not what the god of lights wanted. I'm torn.
Salem didn't want to rule humanity anymore after their daughters displayed magic. She decided they should replace humanity with their own children. Adam and Eve style. Make a new human race with magic independent of the old gods.
@@TheRealRightPrice it's not a bad plan either. She stays forever youthful so she can have as many children as she wants and they keep normal humanity so he can come back until their children outbreed the normal humans so eventually the magic trait becomes dominant. It's actually a pretty good fucking plan.
Please theorize away, I love hearing the connections you make. Your really smart and one of the most empathetic people I have ever seen. You see and understand so much and it’s amazing to witness. I love your reactions and conclusions, you make the characters feel real, and that is an incredible thing (though to be fair crwby did an amazing job making them real too) but you definitely highlight and enhance their depth.
You have some interesting theories. I'm going to write some thoughts before they escape. What if the Season Maidens were not created OF his power... but in fact *are* his children. They are reincarnating, much like he is. His other children didn't seem to possess magic. Instead, that is what two souls with the Gods' blessings are able to have - blessed children. Maybe the four daughters (who so resembled the Season Maidens) also inherited his tendency to reincarnate? Now, these are young children. So they may very well remain quiet when merged with a new soul. But they very much are still around. Also... at least one of the four girls has SILVER eyes. One of the daughters may have managed to escape and flee to safety... and had children. Her children are the silver-eyed warriors who have helped mankind ever since. Also, Salem is both a being of Light and of Darkness. She bathed in the Pool of Creation and the Pool of Destruction. What if the Pool of Life is what brought humanity back on its own? Humanity and other life "spawned" from the Pool of Life, and it may very well still occasionally spawn new life even as the Grimm are spawned by the Pool of Destruction. Alas, I have to wait a week to see your reaction to today's update! :)

Philip Roberts this fucking makes so much sense
This was my theory too, plus Salem will have the satisfaction of knowing all his sacrifices amounted to nothing in the end.

Ok.....um......quick quesh.....what exactly is the balance here?
"wE CaNt DiSrUpT tHe BaLaNce|
Pretty sure the God of Light decided humanity wasn’t worth t afterwards.
I think Ozma is the restoration of balance, with Salem as the darkness.
*Little comparison here;*
Ozma's choice to become the savior of humanity is a parallel of Pyrrah's choice in becomig the Fall Maiden.
I thought him not hesitating was not because of humanity, but to see Salem

Here's how I see Ozpin and Salem's daughters, and the four Maidens.
Ozpin and Salem's daughters were all killed in the crossfire as their parents fought each other on that fateful night in the castle.
Who knows *how* many years later, Ozpin, now an old hermit, met four young women, who each resembled his long lost beloved daughters so much, that he eventually decided to gift them with magic.
Hell, ozpin is also most likely the bravest soul alive, willing to continue fighting for humanity against a being that is immortal.

So Salem was cursed for pulling the old 'Mom said no, so ask Dad' on the gods. Like the theories. Hope your video doesn't get blocked.
Fun things to ponder -
- Ozma's later reincarnation that had a family, look at his kids - they have silver eyes.

As the Gods said, Only when you understand the importance of Life and Death can you rest. You cant beat Salem, just change her mind.

God of Light might get a little pissy about the whole "walk its surface" thing if anyone was ever dumb enough to summon him though.
30% god of light , 35% god of darkness ( 5% more for the moon), 20% ozma(5% extra for sneaking the kids out. way to enfuriate your super powered wife), 15% for salem.

megaidiot95 I disagree that they would of just made it work if they had been honest with each other I think that it could of made it worked for a while to some extent but I think Salem by time they both became gods to the people of remnant she would still become evil and want to bring about the end of humanity cause sorry to get all star warsy but she was still angry at the gods and anger leads to hatred and hatred leads to darkness
The second reincarnation we see is of the old man, most likely the one who made the maidens.
And the most recent episode makes me feel bad for Ozpin. ;-;
DUST CRYSTALS ARE PEOPLE
PEEEOPLEEEEE
But yeah, it seems likely
I have my doubts purely based on the quantity of dust that exists. And how deep in the ground they are mined from. I think maybe tge shards of the moon are acting like catalysts. A parting gift from the god that gave them magic to begin with
Now that we know The Deal, I'm left with one thought above all others: Salem wasn't right, but she sure as hell wasn't wrong, either.
You don't get to set choice as a founding principle and then dust them because you didn't like a choice they made, guys, come on
I mean her core idea of "screw the gods" may not have been wrong, but her lying and tricks did get her cursed and everyone murdered, and she's been killing a lot of people since.

@@endgame38 I made this comment just before she made her's about working things out, so I didn't see it.
This is gonna be an essay of a post about why *_The gods are dicks._* (note: i said dicks, not _evil_ )
The balance of life and death thing is the only thing i agree with them on.
Even in the most Good hearted person, there would still be distrust towards others to a point
The gods are the same, incapable of being truly on each others side unless fighting a common enemy--salem.
It seems the whole "balance must be maintained" was more "eh this isnt a good enough reason to shift the balance"
Tldr: the gods are dicks, and this episode has me convinced that not bringing the relics together would be for the best
"Call it magic, or call it something stronger..."

LOVE.
I like the way they didn't make it just a generic lovers quarrel. Salem doesn't want to kill Oz simply because he tried to leave her, but because he defied her. She's a surprisingly sympathetic villain, or at least her in the beginning.

True lol.
Now for the ship name?
I love that Oz is presented as basically a good hearted hero through all of this. It explains why he was chosen to be the steward.
The parts that make him shady are all the things he's done while building defenses and loosely organizing all of humanity to help fight a war that cannot be won.
Either fight a war that can never be won or be overrun with grimm, those are kind of the only choices he had
Ozma made one big mistake and that was trying to kill Salem instead of trying to work with her and heal her pain. He was sent back to redeem humanity and he couldn't redeem his own love?!? That and keeping secrets from her when they first met. Funny how he didn't learn from that.
to be fair, Salem wasn't sharing everything with Ozma either at that point.
Her pain? Did you watch the episode? She got a god complex and wanted to eradicate humanity and replace them with her children. That's not pain.
@@bluhmer1990 Salem was in enough pain that she tried to kill herself on multiple occasions.
@@liminaut But she got her husband back. She was happy, but she couldn't leave it at that.

That would be incorrect. Semblances are a branch of aura. It's directly related to the souls of each individual. It has nothing to do with magic.
That doesn't make sense. If that were the case then semblances would be insanely rare, which they are not.
I feel the better question to ask would be “how can I save Salem?”
Salem: That's not fair
Me: What's your basis for comparison?
Gods were like "Let's make extreme choice to make her understand our point."
Salem got to the extreme and Ozma (ozpin) got the other extreme...
I'm gonna be honest, Salem was really pretty in her early stages of being Grimmified. Not so much with all the veins going over her body
I know tons of people have brought it up, but the specific wording of that question is some classic Genie shenanigans.
"How do I destroy Salem?"
"You can't."
Ozpin can't.
Only the power of the 4 maidens can destroy her
@@jimfox1477 The power of the four maidens is the exact same power Ozma/Ozpin had when he was fighting Salem and he still wasn't able to destroy her.

My god the detail is amazing, they really went all out this volume and it really paid off
The stars cannot shine without the dark. And a fire cannot start with out a spark.
I think it is not like "light" and "dark" situation the reason why Salem cannot die. I think it is simple. Only the gods can kill her. And for that, Oz has to summon them. But then... if he summons them, they will judge humanity. So there lies the problem.
“You must learn the importance of life and death, only then may you rest”
Volume 6 chapter 4 QRWBY’s takeaway:
“Blah blah blah blah, Salem can’t be killed, Oz sucks, blah blah blah blah”
(Sigh)
Actually, Jinn said "YOU can't", she didn't say "nobody can".
OverlordFlinx and he asked how to DESTROY Salem, not how to stop her.
Ruby using Silver Eyed Spirit Bomb confirmed, lol.
I think it'll still be true that nobody except the gods can destroy her. But the gods did tell her what she needed to learn in order to break her curse, so really the only one who can destroy her is herself. And the *right* question to ask is: "how do we *save* Salem?"
@@SpanishFly120 totally thought the same i hope that will come true

My god that is so much more chilling now.
Whoops, wrong time-stamp. Meant 30:10

@@Chokah Eh, if you have seen the recent episode, everyone but the old lady ruby and weiss deal with it poorly. :/
@Zach Rose not a First member, but yeah I've had part of that spoilered for me =(
@@Chokah a good point though.
You really feel that scream Salem does just before the moon comes down on her, great voice acting.
The God of Light being an Eastern Dragon and the God of Darkness being a Western Dragon is pretty significant to their characters:
In Eastern(Oriental) Culture, Dragons are chimerical creatures with Ox tails, Stag antlers and wingless, serpentine bodies with four limbs.

Did anybody else see the crown and just about shit themselves at the thought of that being the Mad Kings crown with the power of all Choice?

SuperMandibleclaw Salem, I don’t feel so good...
Oh gosh... I never considered that, to an immortal being, Oz's lives would be a constant reminder of how the gods jerked Salem around
