  • Showing how to fillet Northern Pike using the "5 Fillet Method." During our week to Ontario Canada, we had to pull the boat due to Hurricane Beryl remnants that came through and stormy weather conditions kept us off the water... but not off the dock! We tried some more new lures (crank baits) and end us catching some nice eater bass and a nice eater pike to show this method of cleaning pike!

Do you prefer to fry up pike or fry up bass? Often the bass we've caught seem to have a really earthy taste that isn't all that great, but I'm wondering if it was just bad luck. And then my pike fillets usually become so torn up from getting the Y bones out that I end up chopping it into fish sticks to make it more presentable! I need to try your 5 fillet method.

So honestly, I prefer largemouth bass over pike, but it depends on the season and the water body you are eating the fish from. Can’t make a general statement that one is better than the other. I’ve had excellent pike, and yes, the Y bones can be difficult, but try cutting it in small pieces instead of one big fillet and fry it up like nuggets. Bass, I really prefer out of the ice but some of the cold Canadian lakes we find they taste amazing. I either fry with a lite batter or blacken in a cast iron pan. Probably the first and biggest part is bleeding the fish out before prep the fillets will taste much better

Hi, which lake is it in Ontario? I am just getting started in fishing as a hobby. Trying to figure out where to start!
