I'm Chinese and I can confirm that yes jade rollers have been in China for many many centuries. It's funny tho because it's something that's so old that when I was growing up in the 90s, only old people like my grandparents have it(even then they didn't use it very often. It's more like just a thing hanging around the house). Young people never cared for it. I guess because it was such an old thing that's not considered trendy to use.
I'm sure I could do more research on the jade roller in Chinese where I would find the earliest records of it, but I'm lazy. One thing for sure tho, I've seen it in the Gu Gong museum in Beijing. It was made out of tourmaline and was used by the famous empress Ci Xi Tai Hou from the Qing Dynasty.
It's basically a fancy device that the rich and powerful used in the past as part of their skincare routine
(Resume to watching the rest of the video now)

    • @Losshe
      @Losshe 5 ปีที่แล้ว +245

Just finished watching the video. A few more things I'd like to add.
It doesn't have to be jade. Although people in the past and some people today believe that some stones have certain healing powers. The reason why these rollers are mainly made with jade is, well, because Chinese people love jade. That's it.
Historically jade has been adored and praised because of its toughness and the softness of its lustre. Its quality resonates with the quality that the ancient Chinese people valued: calm, humble, gentle and tough. White jade has also been compared to women's skin and can be found in thousands of literature from the past and today. Just to give you a perspective on how much Chinese people love jade.
That being said, those rollers are made with the stone that people loved, like the tourmaline one the empress used.
A final thing I'd like to add to this super long comment for anyone who's patient and interested enough to read is that, like Dr Dray said, jade is a broad name for nephrite and jadeite. Nephrite is the actual stone that Chinese people called jade and is what most jade rollers are made out of. Whereas jadeite is a harder and more prescious stone discovered later in history; they're mainly from Burma and is an extremely expensive stone and is mainly used in high end jewelry today.
Nephrite on the other hand, isn't very expensive (also that depends on the color, quality and where they're from).
I get a bit angry at how much some people charge for a jade roller here in North America since its sudden rise of popularity but I guess it's normal that they'd do that. My best bet is to go to a Chinatown in your city and you might find one there that's cheaper and essentially the same thing as the one you pay $90 for

Dr Dray, I am continually impressed by how respectful you are with products, methods or beliefs that could be considered gimmicky, popular, or offer false promises and information. I have noticed how you communicate on these delicate subjects by clearly stating no medical evidence has proven its efficacy, but also do not discredit any potential benefits or those who follow these practices 🙌🏼

Glass globe wands do the exact same thing as rollers as far as reducing puffiness and calming inflamed capillaries and they're usually much cheaper that jade rollers. As an esthetician I don't think the globes or rollers are miracle workers and I only suggest them as a possible way to relieve morning puffiness. Cold spoons do the same thing honestly. Great to hear your opinion on it.

I have a fake jade roller as well as the real one. The jade seems to stay cooler longer. It's also smoother on skin and rolls smoother in the metal frame. I dont use it after using actives but I do use it after moisturizer because it glides better on skin. I find it relaxing and relaxed skin and muscles wouldnt make as many wrinkles, those deep expression lines. My fake jade is some kind of bead, it's not a real stone and it only cost $5. I do see results with decreased puffiness, as I am a side sleeper so one side would swell more. I find that this feels nice when my allergies are acting up.

Two types of jade: jadeite and nephrite. Nephrite has that name because it was believed to help with kidneys and in some cultures still is. Most cheaper jade rollers are made of green aventurine which is cheaper. Honestly, I agree with you that any cooling stone would work. So if you want one but don't have the £££, get the aventurine or rose quartz. At any rate it. Feels nice.

Dr. Dray, you must be a mind reader! I was just going through my Christmas gifts, and I was given two jade "stones" for the face. They are flat and the directions show how to move it over the skin. It suggests to apply a moisturizer and then use the product.
I believe it was purchased from TJ Maxx. I am skeptical of these because it would be easy to press to hard. Also, I got so tired of trying to "layer" so many skin care products and after watching your routine, I have greatly simplified my skin care routines. To be honest, I don't think I will take the time to use these.
They are beautiful, so I may leave them on my dresser for decor👍💕😊
P.S. I want to also thank you again for promoting the use of spf lip products. Listen to me everyone, my husband is very fair. He enjoys yard work and was always diligent to apply sunscreen... to his skin. He ended up with cancer of the lip. A plastic surgeon removed a portion of his lip. He did a beautiful job, miraculous really. This was 20 years ago (my husband was in his 30's). Since then we have completely stayed away from the sun, and if we go to the beach, we use an umbrella and sunscreen!
(My husbands brother ended up with melanoma on his face. He actually lost his left eye. They grew up in Louisiana which has hot, hot summers with lots of sun.)

Hello! I'm new to your channel (got your info from one of the makeup youtubers I follow) and I'm so thankful (and annoyed) because now I need to overhaul all of my skincare!! In the process of trying to reduce plastic use I got stuck using a lot of "green" skincare and it's INSANE the amount of citrus oil that is used in those products. It's really tough trying to be science smart and environmentally conscious as it seems actually effective ingredients (without fragrance) have very utilitarian plastic packaging while the brands that want to be environmentally conscious to a lot of excessive green-washing. Annoyances aside I wanna thank you for keeping me informed as I try my best to walk the line between being environmentally considerate and actually using products that are effective for my skin.

Jade has six natural colors. The hierarchy of color value of jade would be green, lavender, red, yellow, white and black. The ideal is a strong, vibrant color while successively darker or lighter shades are considered less desirable. It’s mainly considered as a symbol of serenity, tranquility, and purity. It’s a stone that’s believed to bring in good luck, friendship, peace, and harmony.
Even if it’s a very receptive stone, Green Jade is also known as a protective stone because of its abilities to ward off the negative energies that surround you. Jadeite is always going to be the chosen gemstone for Asians because of our heritage. Today, most jadeite comes from Myanmar. But “top-quality Burmese jadeite is becoming rare to find,” another factor driving up prices, that's why bad people makes fake jade :( .....Anyways, the dog in the beginning says Happy Friday everyone! I sleep on my stomach and also have a health issue that causes swelling and puffiness on my face and body. I decided to give the rose quartz roller try for that, to try to iron out my 11's and improve the slight jowels I've started to notice. I really enjoy the feeling of rolling, it really has helped with swelling and it's just relaxing. Jade and quartz isn't that expensive, and I got a beautiful kit for around $25.00. I roll after applying my all my skincare, but I wait for each layer to dry first, and roll after my last 2 steps (oil and cream). I've noticed it helps the oil to absorb, and there's very little product left on the roller. I do agree that things like stainless steel and glass would probably do the same thing.

Piggy, I used two comfortable pillows behind me at an angle and put another pillow under my knees. I still wake up on my side every once in awhile but have it licked for the most part.

hey dr dray, i know this doesnt relate to the video much but i was wondering if these products im using on my face are ok. so my skin care routine includes using the olay micellar water, the ordinary 10%N and 1% Zinc, aloe vera gel and MB drying lotion and calendula cream if needed. Sometimes i use this coffee grind exofliate. Also, what is a good face sunscreen that is cheap and good for acne prone and oily skin?

My significant other just had knee surgery. He bought a smooth piece of Jade with a few grooves in it, because his physical therapist recommended it for massaging his leg to bring down some swelling. I wonder if a Jade roller might help me when I have TMJ pain.

I'm a LMT and have a rose quartz rod/wand for personal use for massage. It really helps, especially after intense leg workouts.

I always thought it was no better or worse than any facial massage gizmo.
And facial massage is great, as far as it goes.

I bought from AliExpress for 2dollors
    It's a good quality one
I like it just got the cooking effect and because it makes me relax (like a massage therapy)
But I never believed in any other benefits

My muscles are genetically tense all over my body especially my neck and shoulders. The jade roller feels so very good on my knotted neck muscles. Also helps relax my facial muscles. That’s my only reason for using the roller whenever I am fatigued

Been curious about this topic as of late and I appreciate your honest opinion Dr Dray. I have seen through some of the comments that some people like the roller for their sinus issues;- I never thought to use it for that but I too suffer a lot of sinus issues.( Just had my 4th and hopefully last sinus surgery in November 2019) If I do pick up a roller I will use it for that; sounds very soothing! Thanks again for your honest advice Dr Dray!😍

Happy Friday Dr. Dray. You are not a jeweler, but you are a true gem! Thank you for sharing your pearls of wisdom and providing such an informative vlog! Quick question, does drinking from a straw contribute to “smokers lines” around the lips?

I use one after a basic HA serum just so it doesn’t drag on my skin at all, then apply my actives after.

I just purchased a rose quartz roller and find it soothing. Since I do facial massage for lymphatic drainage, I thought that by using both methods, it would be even more beneficial. I have not noticed that the roller does anything but offers a cooling sensation (but it is nice). Thank you, Dr. Dray, for your videos! They are always helpful. ♥

I've definitely heard about this technique and how it even helps sculpt your face. Or at least I read that it could and could even opt the roller for a Chinese soup spoon. Don't ask me. I've tried the whole thing and I didn't really see much of a difference. Now I have facial sensitivity neurological problems. Doctors said it's A-Typical face pain. I can't say it's linked but just a theory. I would tell people to be weary doing this, ensure you are doing this properly, and to proceed with caution.

Definitely can be helpful to those with chronic conditions making them prone to edema. Even under treatment it can be a constant battle. The rollers though can be so expensive. I'm looking for a good under knee pillow :) The night guard works quite well and like it. Have a good weekend.

Thank you for your honesty and science based information. I personally feel that products like the Jade Roller is just another marketing scam. Unless there is actual proof of results forget it, spend your hard earned money on proven products.

Okay - I thought you were going to say it was total bunk. I got one in a subscription box, rolled my eyes, and set it aside. I just picked it up this week on a lark and, honestly, whether or not it does any of the things agers claim it does, it FEELS nice to have the cool stone on my face and using it forces me to sit still for 5 minutes. So, win?

Dr Dray I have a question. I didn't realize that puffiness on the face impedes penetration of active skincare. So when you wake up with your face puffy and swollen how should this first be addressed? Is washing your face with cool water, light face massage using your fingers to drain the lymphatic fluid, or putting a cold wet washcloth over your face a good solution to bring down the puffiness before putting on skincare?

Great video! I keep a jade roller in the fridge in the kitchen, when I have a rosacea flare (usually when cooking) I take it out and roll it over my cheeks - chilly bliss!

Dr Dray I’d say it would work great for itching too. It’s lovely cooling relief but my fiery cheeks heat the roller up quite quickly 😊
