I'm still convinced that the Liberty was supposed to be a replacement for the Wrangler. Remember, they killed off the Wrangler in 95. It only came back in 97, because of consumer demand. And when it did, it shared much of it's drivetrain with the ZJ, with minor modifications. They put almost no thought into designing a "new" Wrangler. Now take a look at the Liberty. It has the front end of a Wrangler (sort of). It's small, like a Wrangler. It has all the upgrades you'd expect a manufacturer to put on a upgraded model. But, by the time they were going to release it, Wrangler sales were back. So, instead of killing off the TJ, the kept it and introduced the Liberty. It doesn't make sense that it was replacement for the Cherokee because, as you pointed out, It shared nothing in common with the Cherokee. The consumer who was buying the Cherokee, wouldn't and didn't buy a liberty. But that's my thoughts.
My understanding was that the lack of Wrangler in 96 was just a production issue. They had the TJ planned, but it took longer to bring to market. Could you imagine if they did kill the Wrangler and only leave us with the Liberty?! People would riot!
I found myself watching a lot of your videos over the last week. I feel like I’m watching exactly what I’m thinking about Jeep products and were that are as a brand. You picked up a subscriber. My number one beef now is all this Gladiator hype.
Thanks for subscribing! I think a lot of folks have issues with the Gladiator. Hopefully they will expand on it and give us some of the features and options we really wanted in a Jeep truck
The Grand Cherokee was never intended to replace the Grand Wagoneer but Desert Storm and the hike in gas prices ended up making that happen. So the Grand Cherokee which was intended to be the smaller Jeep ended up being the larger premium Jeep. I don’t have a problem with the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee co-existing together just as the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer did before both vehicles end up being discontinued.
They're just program codes used for internal purposes only. In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't matter. WK2 isn't official. It's just the 2011 WK. Both generations are WK. We do not use "WK2" at Jefferson North Assembly. They can re-use these program codes or they can change them. LJ was not officially used. Both short and long versions are TJ. Basically, WK2 and LJ are both made up.
I think this just made making my own TJ scrambler a bucket list project. I have never felt so betrayed by something that didn't happen. That would probably have been the magnum opus of the jeep brand as a whole.
love your rants man even though i just bought a wk2 limited lol i’m still gonna lift it and off-road it. first car was an XJ and man i do miss that 4.0 straight 6 it had that thing was fun as hell
It is impossible to explain to someone who has never had a 4.0 why you love it so much. by the numbers, they kind of suck. low MPG, heavy, low power, notorious for leaking..... but man are they magical!
D&E In The Garage totally agree there’s something about. when i was 16 i used to take the air filter out and redline it and man did it sound like a beast 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I had a thought the other day to reintroduce the CJ line as a smaller 4x4 under the Wrangler line. The car-jeeps are OK as entry level models, but I want a true 4x4 with Dayna axles, transfer case, manual trans, and less of the luxury features that modern Wranglers come with. Reintroduce the half doors and canvas doors, soft top only, no power windows or door locks, A/C optional, traditional radio (no infotainment screen), and sub 20k base price. Basically make the YJ/TJ Wrangler about 80% size wise of the YJ/TJ with a nice economical 4 cylinder engine and throw in the safety requirements from the Government and price it low.
This should have been the real Jeep line up to maintain consistency and loyalty for its lines. The problem is Jeep and its parent company FCA (wonder where Peugeot will fit) are more worried about making inexpensive vehicles rather than properly stabilizing their model lines. If they properly supported each model line, the loyalty from each line could arguably boost their sales. On a side note, I would love to see a boxy like XJ return but with suicide doors. A small SUV with two-row seats but more designed for those who want to use it as a weekend warrior vehicle.
Love your thoughts. Commander should definitely have been the Wagoneer. To be replaced by a Ram-based full-size SUV. This is another area FCA is sorely lacking; no competition for Tahoe/Yukon, Expedition, Sequoia, etc.
GR8TOPS makes a half cab kit for the CJ8, YJ, TJ & LJ model Wranglers and the JK & JKU Wranglers. Gives them the old school CJ8 look, feel & functionality
Scramblers could be ordered as a wagon with a full length top. The bulkhead was removed and a backseat was added. A Scrambler TJ was totally a missed opportunity
Keep up the great work you are doing. I am working on (my project ZJ Grand Cherokee truck conversion) on Jeepforum. If you get a chance to look at it would like your feedback.
D&E In The Garage trying to find out how to send a link from my phone. The thread on the forum is My Project ZJ Grand Cherokee Truck Conversation. I know I should have made the name shorter.
I LOVE the way the Patriot looks... My problem is the CVT that they also put in the compass and Dodge Caliber... Find one (Patriot) with a manual and I'm there!
Doug your brilliant!💡 🧠 (2nd Dan H brain award! ) lol. I love how you fixed the Cherokee line! I often question Jeeps name plates too. Everything you say makes perfect sense. Jeep should hire you. One thing I've strongly believed is the KK should have been a "Cherokee" and the Commander should have been a "grand Cherokee" since the XK looked like a bigger KK . The WK could have been the start of that other line where you get names like patriot, compass... So on. Good stuff man. Glad you got that off your chest! PS .. make an LJ into a D&E Scrambler... You can do it! I will help 😎
I think Jeep is following the path of Land Rover, going upscale and become unaffordable. My JL is so freaking large, it is very different from the one that I fell in love with 25 years ago, then it was nimble and small. You could jump inside it with half doors installed. Now I have to climb into my JL. My dog has a hard time get into it now.
Although I agree with what you are saying in general even if you ignore all of the timeline stuff about the Cherokee why did Jeep keep the compass name when the patriot was the better seller? Btw I would love a scrambler exactly as you described and back in the day I thought they were going to make one.
1984-2006 cherokee (XJ) 2007-present time cherokee (MK) JEEP cherokee has to stay with the same looks. Just like the jeep wrangler it's been looking similar since 1945.
@@DEInTheGarage I have a point here and this will back me up. Jeep Wrangler (TJ) was built from 1997 to 2006. Look at the interior of a TJ and exterior plastics its the same concept as the XJ 1997 upgrade. Following cherokee model 2007 (MK) to present time. Jeep deserves more respect it's USA history on wheels. Keep up the good work man great channel. I'm glad more people have the same ideas.
Your singing my tune. I like the look of the KK Liberty but rather it be body on frame with solid axles. A straight six with manual or automatic. Two or four doors. I would call it the Wrangler and the current Wrangler just simply call it the CJ. There was a rumor that Jeep was going to resurrect the Scout and put it on a Jeep platform.
One thing Jeep did wrong was put fuel tanks behind the rear axle, making occupants vulnerable in rear impacts to gasoline splash, fires, and even death.
people: How About New cheap XJ? ☞ Jeep: Here is KL Cherokee ! and Compass! // people: We need Small Jeep. Wranglers are too big nowdays ☞ Jeep: Here is new Renegade! da fuq
Omg dude, we could sit down with a few beers and debate this for hours. Some things I agree with you 100%, others I would love to debate. As for the whole TJ, TJU, LJ thing I have a buddy that works for FCA and I have asked him about it. There is only one designation for the TJ line and it is TJ. The "LJ" is simply called the TJ Unlimited. One thing I never understood and you touched on it a bit is in 2007 why release the Patriot and the Compass? They are pretty much the same vehicle. Why release two vehicles to compete for the same spot in the market? I actually test drove both of them in 2008 and besides the compass having horrible blind spots it was like driving the same vehicle. I actually think they should have kept the Liberty line going (named Cherokee) The KJ and KK were very similar with just some fancy headlights and bumper on the KK. Lots of people bash them because the engines had poor oil return design from the head and if they were not maintained properly (which most people didn't) they were known to have valvetrain issues but just think if they had keep them alive and gave it the pentastar v6? It has a solid rear axle (same 8.25 from the XJ), real selectable transfercase (NV231 just like XJ) and ad the pentastar v6 with a few cosmedic updates? There is your vehicle to fill the gap.
I own a 01 jeep grand Cherokee 4.7 liter which I loved until I got the my new jeep which is 2014 ecodiesel jeep grand Cherokee and absolutely love, love it! Haha I know you think its simply luxury but I somewhat disagree. I have the quadra drive 2 multi select system which gives me both luxury and amazing off roading! Not to mention power of a v8 with economy of a 4 cylinder! I easily get over 550 close 600 miles on 1 tank and that's with most driving between city driving!
Commander needed a frame to be a wagoneer. But..that's the thing I don't like about the WJ. Unibodies might be stiff, but they're just not that rugged or robust. They are difficult to repair and rust far too easily. But if they did that, would IT have been a wagoneer? Edit: Am I fixated or what? Lol
HAHA... I like it! I go through the same mental loop. Unibody is not as durable, but no one (almost) makes frame on body SUVs anymore, so would we have not have the XJ, ZJ, WJ, etc if we didnt take them as unibody?
Bro you should see the drawing chip foose did recently of his rendition of a 2020 Jeep xj it would be a perfect time to drop it to compete with the new bronco !
Not sure why the kl got completly taken out of the line up. Its not bad vehicle you can fit in there somewhere. You don't have to call it a cherokee but it looks a hell of a lot better then the renegade/ liberty/ patriot/ commander. Its doesnt deserve to just be thrown out. Throw out the renegade if anything

been thinking of giving it a try an see if I could get it to work id like to try it on a crusty xj or zj should I try body on frame or channel the body an weld it in hmm would be easy to make a pickup
The "new" Cherokee is not a compass. The compass is a garbage car with a CVT. The Cherokee should've been a wk2 it drives and has the similar size, feel, and driving as the wks.
Obviously we would like to see the Comanche back at anytime, but as far as reshuffling the existing vehicles from 2002 to 2019, the Comanche wasn't really in the conversation. There was a Comanche-style concept a few years ago based on - brace yourself - the renegade. It actually looked pretty cool as a mini truck. Almost looked like the old Forward Control Jeeps because of the Renegade's slightly smooshed in face

Why don’t you build your own. There are so many unwanted Jeep cherokees out there and other low quality Jeep SUVs. You would be the envy of your neighborhood!
In my opinion, the patriotic bullshit really killed a large portion of their sales more than help it. All the stupid names they came up with, Im almost shocked management didnt sink the company with decicions on name plates alone. Like did no one in charge of jeep take a marketing class until 4 years ago when they unveiled the new cherokee? nostalgia sells, always.
Your exhaust system sounds a bit modified?...🤔lol Totally agree with you on the Patriot. That should of been branded a Cherokee. Really cool looking vehicle, but a piece of junk.
I thought "we" were the ones who gave it the WK~2~ designation? And we are lifting them already. Not as much as earlier iterations but we are there! Plus why you writing off the WK2 so harshly? It's the last real SUV that keeps the S AND U in the V. They gave it a few more curves i places they shouldn't have but I'm not exactly high rollin' in the thing. (I thought the WK was getting too luxury but the things are every bit utility once you dig in if you want that. Even the SRT is hauling shit like hell)
I know the Jeep Patriot gets a lot of hate - but I love the styling - reliability maybe not so much. Or the buzzy CVT transmission. Later models seem to have many of the issues resolved and a better interior. They mirror the utilitarian form and function factor of the XJ Better than any other Jeep, imo. I own a 98 XJ with only 60k miles, but gas prices are crippling here. In Europe most Patriots have either the VW sourced 2.0 diesel, or in later iterations a quite tasty 2.2 Mercedes diesel with beefy torque and 174 bhp. Better engines overall than the US market gasoline equivalents. Only problem, we also have a EU specification front bumper that looks like Kardashians ass squashed into the shower glass - it's fxxking hideous beyond belief. Thanks for nothing Chrysler!
In the uk I had a 2000 XJ 4ltr but it had been converted to run on LPG like a fool after having it for ten years I changed it for a 2007 Cherokee auto with 2.8 CRD engine bad mistake the 4ltr running on LPG very little tax on LPG so it turns out the diesel is more expensive to run what a joke.

Another reason is I finished watching your video about the mail vehicle and thought if Jeep could make a working folk Jeep that can last for decades even. Maybe they need to get with those Russian Soviet countries, because they have built some extremely capable reliable 4x4s.
And jeep needs to go back to solid axles. The independent crap even with the computer traction control is almost comical on a trail with a 01 wj. Might as well bring extra tires for when you spin em all up looking for traction on independent suspensions. Not to mention have you seen the 'new' jeeps jacked up. Hahaha it looks rediculous.

Officially its a TJU but the enthusiasts all call it an LJ never heard TJ/L. I own an 04 with only 90k miles i love it!
That would be wild, right?!
I'd buy that all day.
Agree! Though I believe the new Wagoneer IS going to be on the 1500 platform, so hopefully that is fixed soon!
I've heard. Can't wait. Will be looking to replace the wife's Yukon in a few years.
Loved this video. Spot on my friend!
GR8TOPS makes a half cab kit for the CJ8, YJ, TJ & LJ model Wranglers and the JK & JKU Wranglers. Gives them the old school CJ8 look, feel & functionality
I would love to get my hands on that setup... someday, maybe
You are on point,wk2 should be the WL
Scramblers could be ordered as a wagon with a full length top. The bulkhead was removed and a backseat was added. A Scrambler TJ was totally a missed opportunity
Keep up the great work you are doing. I am working on (my project ZJ Grand Cherokee truck conversion) on Jeepforum. If you get a chance to look at it would like your feedback.
Absolutely. Do you have a link to your thread?
D&E In The Garage trying to find out how to send a link from my phone. The thread on the forum is My Project ZJ Grand Cherokee Truck Conversation. I know I should have made the name shorter.

Jeep Wrangler should of stayed 2 door the 4 door just doesn’t look right to me just my opinion

Wow... that is one I missed... the KK and XK looking so similar. That would be a good alternative line. Good add, Danno! Haha
i like the cj scrambler and 1960s wagoneer.

Sorry bud..
Call the renegade the commando. Commander is the grand wagoneer... 08 liberty is now the wagoneer
That actually makes a con of sense. I like it a lot!
Although I agree with what you are saying in general even if you ignore all of the timeline stuff about the Cherokee why did Jeep keep the compass name when the patriot was the better seller? Btw I would love a scrambler exactly as you described and back in the day I thought they were going to make one.
I have no idea considering how bad the first gen Comaass' reputation is. I have given up asking "why" when it comes to the top brass at Chrysler
1984-2006 cherokee (XJ)
2007-present time cherokee (MK)
JEEP cherokee has to stay with the same looks.
Just like the jeep wrangler it's been looking similar since 1945.
I can get behind that!
I would jump all over a new scout!
I like the new timeline Brother!
Thanks buddy! I saw your new channel, BTW. AS soon as I have a few minutes to myself I am going to check out the prepper vids!
Wranglers are too big nowdays ☞ Jeep: Here is new Renegade! da fuq
People: "do you even know me?? Haven;t you not been listening this entire time??"
Number 1 for me is the XK Commander should have been the gen 3 XJ Cherokee!
I see you have given this the same amount of thought I have! If you are ever in Jersey, stop by for a chat!
Omg! Jeep truck, Jeep truck, Jeep truck!!!!!!!!!!!!
2020 gladiator
Right?!
Damn man... You are changing my mind a bit here!. Also, I was not using "luxury SUV" as a derogatory term. I like the new GCs in the correct context
I here ya! Love the grand Cherokee , not that I don't like any of the others but the grand is my favorite by far!
@@DEInTheGarage Let everyone else make the 100% replaceable street cars...

2022 Jk scrambler to compete with the Ford raptor and dodge trx ? 🤔
Would be done, right?
Bro you should see the drawing chip foose did recently of his rendition of a 2020 Jeep xj it would be a perfect time to drop it to compete with the new bronco !
Not sure why the kl got completly taken out of the line up. Its not bad vehicle you can fit in there somewhere. You don't have to call it a cherokee but it looks a hell of a lot better then the renegade/ liberty/ patriot/ commander. Its doesnt deserve to just be thrown out. Throw out the renegade if anything
Yea, we are fans of the KL on the channel, it just was not needed on this timeline
jeep also needs a UTV ...like a razor but like a CJ2
Damn.. that would be wind, right??
Mahindra Roxor comes pretty close, not officially Jeep but licensed by them or something like that.
@@rigom.2853 Mahindra owns the rights to produce the CJ-like vehicle worldwide, since WWII or something.. That's what the Roxor is. FCA is trying to end that agreement.
Mahindra makes one. Called the Roxor, pretty dang cool and with a 4 cylinder diesel engine top speed of 45mph and now available with front and rear lockers, only comes with a 5 speed manual transmission and a manual transfer case...sorry no automatics in those. The only trouble is to add a full cab, heat and ac plus lockers you are at $37,000 for the Roxor.
They do. It's called a Renegade. 😂
Check out TJ or LJ Brutes. Basically a scrambler on the TJ/LJ platform
I actually like the patriot, i think my old lady might be going into one.
My sister has one and it is a great vehicle. She battles the Montana winters with it and has not complaints
When Chrysler acquired Jeep, I quit calling them Jeeps, for the most part. They've never lived up to their name since then, in my opinion.
The got rid of solid axles on the grand Cherokee
I am not saying I like it, but it had to happen (sadly) it is just where the car market was going
@@DEInTheGarage You said it "Car". That's what they've turned the majority of Jeeps into, nothing more than a hatchback sedan car with a 1/2 ass AWD system that is now front wheel drive based...and triple the price....although I have to say the window sticker for my 98 ZJ was like $31,000 for it new, and its a Laredo SE
I have a lj. It's the best jeep jeep made I feel like. Besides there shitty auto transmissions. Any jeep from 2007 to 2019 looks weird and I dont like them. Jeep is going the wrong way with there line. Comanche.... a boxy truck. An xj with a bed. They need something like that again but with a new motor to pass all these emissions
AGREE! Would a Renegade based truck be crazy?
always wondered how an xj or a zj would be like with a wrangler frame worked in
Could you imagine how bullet proof they would be with a full frame?!
been thinking of giving it a try an see if I could get it to work id like to try it on a crusty xj or zj should I try body on frame or channel the body an weld it in hmm would be easy to make a pickup
LJ has longer wheelbase and longer rear overhang
The "new" Cherokee is not a compass. The compass is a garbage car with a CVT. The Cherokee should've been a wk2 it drives and has the similar size, feel, and driving as the wks.
What about the Jeep Comanche?
Obviously we would like to see the Comanche back at anytime, but as far as reshuffling the existing vehicles from 2002 to 2019, the Comanche wasn't really in the conversation. There was a Comanche-style concept a few years ago based on - brace yourself - the renegade. It actually looked pretty cool as a mini truck. Almost looked like the old Forward Control Jeeps because of the Renegade's slightly smooshed in face
Where does the commander figure into all of this ??
It stays as is, but we call it the Wagonee just because I think it makes sense. I am pretty sure I mentioned it
They Can do it now...but the Lj is a great way to do it......i may see about finding a Lj. July......maybe
Yea man, I could see all that. You should definitely find an LJ to add to the mix! In my opinion, they are the best looking Wrangler
Someone in our local Jeep Group just traded in their LJ for a Gladiator.
Greenville TX Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep. I drove by yesterday and its sitting on their trade lot.
D&E In The Garage how about Chrysler buying out Fiat to get rid of the horrible reputation of the Fiat line! Merge, or become partnered with Toyota to build customers faith in the reliability of the Jeep name, which has gone into the toilet since Fiat!

That is a very important but of fine print. good call!

Right?? It would be such an awesome vehicle!
GR8TOPS makes a TJ & LJ Half Cab kit that's gives them the old CJ8 look, feel & functionality
Is the Gladiator the new Comanche.
I would argue "no". It is 4 door, based on the Wrangler, and most importantly, fully body on frame. The MJ Comanche was a very unique pickup truck. Unibody cab with a sub frame for the bed to bolt to. Made it is a very nimble, tight little truck
Why don’t you build your own. There are so many unwanted Jeep cherokees out there and other low quality Jeep SUVs. You would be the envy of your neighborhood!
I have always wondered what they were smoking when they decided to call kj a liberty in North America should have been Cherokee everywhere.
This guy gets it..
Your exhaust system sounds a bit modified?...🤔lol
Totally agree with you on the Patriot. That should of been branded a Cherokee. Really cool looking vehicle, but a piece of junk.
It is stock, but I think there is a slight leak post muffler resulting in a bit more in-cab noise than usual
The CJ-8 Scrambler never sold well.
A 2 inch lift is a disgrace to jeeps.
Huh.. I didnt realize the Patriot had different bumpers across the pond. I am also a fan of the styling for sure
