    The most accurate "History of Jeep" story ever told - thanks for getting it so right! To add - what very few historians tell us, is that Bantam's BRC 40, Ford's GP and Willys' MA were ordered in roughly equal numbers, mostly exported through lend lease - the Russians actually preferring the Bantam version. When the QMC decided on a single model "Truck 1/4 ton 4x4", for mass production, Willys simply outbid both Ford and Bantam with their model MB at $739.00 per unit - so it all came down to price! Speaking of Bantam - a lesser known fact is that they DID have the capacity to build around 200 000 vehicles a year, but someone clearly wanted Ford to get the contract and the 280-odd thousand GPWs they build, were delivered at an inflated price of $890.00 per unit!

    Nice Vid,,, good research - I was USMC in the late 70's early 80's (Air Wing) - we used these little jeeps and they rode the C-130's and went all over the world with us. They were so dependable, you did not even realize they where there. Also the Navy & USMC had a 3 wheel version of the Jeep that was used to tow aircraft on the ground and on Carriers. For some reason in the early 80's, the smaller jeeps where phased out and the USMC brought in Dodge Ram pickups, they did not get the love we gave to the jeeps. The pickups where difficult to pack up and deploy. They where not practical, we wound up scrounging and old jeep and just took that with us. It hauled parts, made pizza runs, towed aircraft, flight line work, squadron parties, and fit very well when we had to pack up and leave on a c-130. Other Marine & Army units did the same, and just patched up old jeeps, much like we are doing today.

    The M151 was nicknamed the mutt. I drove them occasionally in the Army. I was a tanker in a cavalry unit. Our Scouts primary used the M113 APC but also used the M151 with the M2 .50 caliber mounted in the back. I never considered it a real jeep either.

      @@DEInTheGarage Most of my driving experience in the M151 was in convoys at speeds of 45-50mph but, one time I was held back because of an electrical problem. After the repair was made I was told to catch up with the convoy. I drove as fast as it would go about 60mph. In retrospect, I don't think that was a good idea it was a little bit squirrelly at that speed. The Lieutenant leading the convoy made a wrong turn and got them lost. I beat the convoy to the refueling point by 2hrs. I never had the opportunity to Drive an M151 off-road but, observing our scouts on maneuvers the M151 looked very agile and seemed like it was able to bounce over obstacles it was very capable. It was very lite only about 2500lbs. I never had a chance to drive an M38A1 but I did own 2 CJ5's one had the F head engine the Same as the M38A1 the other had a 304 V8.

    Actually, Am General had been Jeep's military division since 1971. Due to Renault's involvement with AMC and some issue with military contracts not allowed to be held by foreign governments, Am General was split off completely from AMC in the 1983, I believe. Am General developed the Humvee/Hummer in 1985...so the Hummer is actually a Jeep. Later on when GM licensed Hummer from Am General for civilian sales, DaimlerChrysler tried to sue GM for using the 7 slot grill, but lost because it was licensed by Am General, Jeep's military division....just wanted to ease your mind that Jeeps are still contracted for the military currently, since 1985. Loved your history, love your channel, love Jeep!

      I was going say something to this effect and really if you look at it a HMMWV looks like a wide body Jeep with outboard headlights, basically they stuck the driveline up in between the seats as a reaction to the m151 rollovers, lengthened it and made something to take the place of the M151 and the old Dodge Power Wagons that was more combat capable than the M880 or CUCVs.

    Great video. I own a 1956 M38A1 jeep in UN white with decals, snorkel cover on the bonnet, and olive drab canvass top.
    Completely original transfer case, F-Head, gearbox etc. I had it stripped and rebuilt.
    I also owned a Commander 2009 with 5.7L Hemi, and in 2014 I bought the Overland Limited 5.7L Hemi. Very comfortable ride although a bit too fancy with cream leather interior, heated/aircon seats and heated steering wheel.
    I enjoy driving the M38A1 the most. Winter or summer. :)

    The M151 and M151A1 swing axles, that caused massive camber angle changes, roll-overs and crashes, were on the REAR Axles - NOT on the FRONTs ... - Trucks and SUVs with independent Front suspension - INCLUDING the M151 - almost all have Double wishbone / Double A-arm suspension, that maintains the wheels vertical on up and down wheel travel !

  • @hendo337
    @hendo337 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    You for got the FC-170 based 1964 M677, which was probably one of the inspirations for the HMMWV produced by AMC offshoot AM General.

  • @joshuaallen4739
    @joshuaallen4739 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    AMC spun off the AM General Company that makes the Humvee after the US Govt. discovered that the French Renault Company was involved in keeping AMC afloat. The US Govt. didn't want any foreign companies involved in military affairs. AMC, spun off the Humvee division, lost the military contract and was liquidated by Chrysler. The CJ-7 was no longer produced due to bad press on turnovers, fueled by the media and the birth of the Wrangler was introduced after Chrysler's takeover.

    Hey Doug, that was cool!!! It's in your blood ! I'm 63 (Lifted 2000 Grand owner) but I'd like to share an experience from 1972 hitch hiking to the first outdoor concert @ Pocono Raceway from Delaware. I was picked up by a couple going there. They were driving a '64 ish' 4 cylinder ,4 - sd, 4- door JEEP. BUT to make a long story short after Joan Biaz did her set , SANTANA was coming on stage and it started raining (pouring)!!!##. Whe jumped in the JEEP & with 4 more passengers we climbed a muddy, rain soaked grassy hill 60 degrees with no problem! I do remember the JEEP had a serious 4- low. Looking back , it's all a about gear matches which is what we need! Thanks Bud, excellent commentary! Keep'm Com'n!

    Nice video! Wonderful job on this. I've been a Jeep owner since April 2012. My JK Wrangler Rubicon unlimited was a factory order. I'm seventy-three. Jeep is makes my favorite brand of vehicles to drive. (This past July I rented a 2021 Grand Cherokee for 3 weeks. My wife and I put 3,750 miles on the Grand Cherokee in that time in Utah, Montana, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico. When long distances of highway driving are in store for us, I prefer driving Grand Cherokee's to Wrangler Rubicon's, especially at my age.)

    I got introduced to D&E by watching your "podcast" videos. I didn't even know there was an E to D&E until I started back logging. I love the way you project the information you want to share with us the viewers. I also like that you can admit to mistakes you may have made in previous videos and continue to grow. I'm a Canadian Jeep enthusiast, but it doesn't stop me from remembering our fallen brothers and the Jeeps that helped save countless others. So I hope you "Mericans" all had a good memorial day! Maybe spent it with your families driving around in your Jeeps! Keep it up D and don't worry E love you too man!

    • @DEInTheGarage
      @DEInTheGarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha... Well thank you very much for that feedback. The "E" in D&E is the behind the scenes backbone to D&E. Eric handles all the computer and video equipment, designs our logos and shirts, and helps research the projects and videos. We like to be certain we admit when we have been wrong to ensure the integrity of the channel. We want people to be able to count on us to pass along the best information we have at the time.
      From a USA Jeeper to a Canadian Jeeper, I have to ask. Does Canada have a holiday similar to Memorial Day? I apologize for my ignorance... I feel like I should know this given the proximity of our countries.

    • @wheresthetunez
      @wheresthetunez 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well both D and E together make a great team in the garage! Love watching your videos! And it's not ignorance to not know everything about each other countries. At least you are not asking if we have running water up in Canada. The answer is yes we do have running water, I have a stream that runs next to my igloo LOL! To answer your question Canada does have a memorial day. It's celebrated by only a couple of our provinces (our version of states) on our Canada Day (our independence day) on July 1 . The reason it's only a couple provinces is because during the first world war they were not quite a part of Canada just yet. Otherwise the whole country remember those that have served and those that have fallen on Remembrance Day. The 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month we remember.

    as I grew up in Patagonia in the 60`s we owned a CJ2a and a M38 (+ a Land Rover Series 2) I just LOVED them!!! it would be so nice to have one now, and if it would have a hydraulic lift hitch for construction/agricultural equipment, the better (Love Tractor implements)... Jeep is one of these cars that are truly legendary, and certainly perhaps my favorite overall (I later had a CJ7). Very few other cars could join this exclusive club of mine... (like the 12-window VW bus, Land Rover Series I+II, Fiat 500, Austin Mini, Ford F100, VW Beetle, Citroen CV2, Renault R4, Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40, Mercedes Benz Unimog...) Unluckily today`s Jeeps are not so much my thing, and perhaps the only real 4x4 still surviving is the Toyota Series 70`s (Australian market)!

    Great, well thought out video. You clearly have a passion for Jeep which a lot have but lack the knowledge. My grandfather was a WWII Army medic and drove Willys MB's all over Europe. He had a CJ-5 that he maintained until the age of 83, died last year at 98. Funny story, one of his other grandsons pulls up to his house in Greenbrier, TN with a 4 door jku limo about 9 years ago. My grandfather's reaction, "What is that"??!! He couldn't believe that was a Jeep product and told him, get your money back, someone put one over on you. Needless to say, he actually traded it in for a '10 2 door that weekend. He was so embarrassed and we all still give him shit about it to this day. We have a saying, family doesn't let family buy a 4 door pregnant roller skate. God bless America and all veterans! 🇺🇸

    I’m sure this has been said before me, but Memorial Day is set aside as a day of remembrance of those who have died in the service of the United States in the various military branches. It was originally started as Remembrance Day,also known as Decoration Day, by the veterans and families of the Confederate States of America, otherwise known as Rebels, or Confederates. The re-unified United States of America, in an overture of inclusion, folded it into our now Memorial Day. It is a totally different day from the Veterans’ Day we now celebrate to thank all who have served in the US Military.

    Why is he pronouncing the company WILLIES,as Willis....?

      Because that was the name of the German immigrant who started the company. We have Americanized it over the years, but proper pronunciation is Will-Us

    My restored 1953 M38A1 was built by FORD CANADA for the Korean conflict.
    The M151 should never have gone into the field. Absolute junk.

      If so why did he change it to Willy's later in the clip ? My grandfather worked for them and they always pronounced it Willy's

      It is WILL-IS, but I have a bad habit of slipping into WILL-IES as in english it seems to roll off the tongue easier.
