Was talking with an American at one point, and he was confused as to why I would use the word "Canuk". He said in America, that's a derogatory word for a Canadian. Lol I laughed. I said, "It's ok, Yankee."
Thanks for your extremely kind comment, Caya 🤗. I am incredibly glad to hear that you have such a great impression of my country and fellow Canadians 🇨🇦🤩.
I'm American. I found your videos trying to teach my kids about money outside the US. We call soft drinks in Colorado, pop too. But I've heard soda in other places. In New Mexico people call it a Coke, no matter the brand. I'm from the Southwest, so the South, East, Midwest and West have regional dialects and accents that differ from where I am. All the rest was intriguing to watch. I learned a lot.
Tim Hortons is my favorite thing about Canada. Anytime I visit, I search out a Timmies, and because there's one on every other corner, they aren't hard to find. I love Timmies coffee. Starbucks sucks by comparison!
That was an excellent loon call. I always enjoy learning new things that I didn't know as far as Canadian slang goes, especially considering I've lived in Ontario for 30 years. Molson Muscle got me, I'd never heard that and I was laughing about it.
It was such a surprise for me, you´re very kind and didactic JeN! I didn't know any canuck slang and now I master 26 at once, thanks to yu. Great! Now I´m your fan. Thanks!
I love Canada because of: Moose, Supernatural, Vancouver, the sound of the Canadian slang, the culture (you say "I'm sorry" very often) and the way you're seeing other people (in my opinion, you are kinder than Americans while talking to foreign people)
And thank you so much for creating this video!! I will be learning so much from you.....its like an ocean of knowledge and I can't wait to explroe them all.
Thanks for your watching and subscribing. 🤗 I hope you will find the English lessons on my channel useful. 🌸 I don't speak Japanese in any of my videos anymore, (but I keep studying Japanese because I love Japan). 😉
I've noticed a lot of Canucks say beauty and sketchy. It seems beauty is something good or a good situation, and sketchy is something bad or a questionable situation. "That looks sketchy, eh?"
Thanks for your comment. That is so true! I personally don't use 'beauty' in slang, but many Canadians do use it in the way that you have mentioned. I am not sure if saying something is 'sketchy' is unique to Canucks or not, but I use it all the time! The way you've used it is perfect. 👍🏻☺️
Any Australian would understand this as well... we'd probably say.."You Beauty" - However Beauty would sound more like Beaudy'... and That looks a bit.. Sketchy.. is very understandable....
Hello Chris. Thanks for your comment. I hope that both you and your daughter are doing well during these unprecedented times and that once this is behind us, you can enjoy being reunited. Take Care. 💐

One of my favorite things about Canada is your videos. Even though I have been Canadian all my life I learn new things from your videos. I have never heard the slang for Toronto or the term just give’er. I agree the scenery, the wildlife and the multiculturalism are some of our best features. People who live here and people who visit should spend some time in the National Parks to really enjoy the country.
Haha, thanks so much for your comment! I'm glad you enjoy my videos. In addition to The Six, other nicknames for Toronto include T-Dot, The Big Smoke, and Hogtown. I think that which nickname people use depends on their generation. I used to call Toronto T-Dot, but then Drake made the nickname The Six more popular and that's what most people I know seem to use now. As for Give'er, this Canadian slang was more popular in central Canada and has since spread because it was used in several movies and TV shows. I've heard it used many times, but don't personally use it. Anyways, I agree that people should visit Canada's national parks to enjoy Canada's nature. Do you have a favourite national park?
My favorite thing about Canada? That's a difficult question to answer because I like many things about Canada! I like the beautiful land, the kind people, great fishing, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Paul Bunyan's French-Canadian heritage, and last but not least, the use of "eh" in everyday conversation. I live in Minnesota and say it often too. So there's many things to like about Canada, eh? Thanks for the informative video, Jen!
My favourite thing about Canada is being proud Canadian and being treated so well by people when I travel outside the country , we are honoured to be considered a good country , Thank you,!,,be calm be kind and be safe

This is such an adorable video. Reminds me of my Australian coworker who had just arrived in Canada about a week earlier. I said I had to go to the bank to get some loonies and toonies and she thought I was making some weird joke. I had never really considered how goofy it sounded. Also, The fact that you included "give'er" is hilarious to me. I'm wondering if "T-dot" is completely extinct now. I don't say "the Six" because I'm not a Drake fan. Guess I'll stick with "Tronnuh" hehe
Hi Sakura 🌸 I'm so happy to hear that this video has made you interested in coming to Canada. 😎🤗 I hope that once the situation with COVID19 becomes more stable, that you'll be able to enjoy a trip here 🇨🇦✨
I became your fan, a huge fan of yours right at the first time I saw you which was on this video! You are simply awesome! What a great video, eh!!? What an incredible content!! What I love the most about Canada is the fact that there are road signs and street signs in both English & French everywhere and also the fact that the country is bilingual, speaking the most stylish languages of the world the ones I already stated and being multicultural as well and having trains all over the nation to travel nationwide & even to the universe! What a nice country!! Hi from Brazil!! J'aime anglais et français et je parle les deux langues couramment! La musique canadienne est aussi ma préférée. I love CD, ST, BA, AM and many others! Try to guess what and who they are!! CD is from Charlemagne (Québec), ST is from Windsor and she was raised in Timmins (Ontario), BA is from Kingston (Ontario) and AM is from Ottawa (National Capital). Hi from Brazil again! It is also nice to hear that you like Canadian music. 🎼 I don't hear that so often, and usually not from someone in Brazil! 😁 I was going to leave your Canadian music challenge for someone else to solve, but I think I'll try and guess. What about a "dep" for a corner store. Im Canadian and I didn't know half of these terms because many of them are provincially based and not national, so id say "dep" as in depaneur is a good one. Also, considering Molson, is from Montreal, id have heard the term, but ive never heard that "Molson muscle" in my life.
Hi Justin. 🇨🇦 Thanks for your comment and for adding some new slang, "Dep" for dépanneur (convenience store)🙂 Canada is a huge country so it makes sense that not all slang words are used in all areas of the country. I only included slang that I actually hear people use (and tried to include examples from many places). Thanks for sharing Quebec slang. 👍🏻
@@lecoughlan Its Quebec lingo deriving from "depanneur". Practically all of Quebec uses it and so almost 1/4 of Canadians use the term id assume. English and French speakers alike in Quebec use it. My albertan friend had no clue what it was but uses it now.

I enjoyed a lot 😍
Hi Zunko, thanks for your comment☺️. Newfoundland! That's a great place to go to improve your English because there's hardly any Japanese there compared to other provinces with bigger cities like Toronto and Vancouver. I hope you're enjoying your time in Canada🥰. I've never been to Newfoundland, but I'd really like to visit someday after watching Come From Away, and because everyone I've met from there has been so kind! (People here in Ontario are kind too, but people from Newfoundland seem to be even nicer and more laid back.) 🤗 How long have you been in Canada for? I wish you the best of luck as you continue studying and improving your English! ☺️👍🏻

Sorry to hear that you had to leave Canada early due to COVID19, but I'm glad to hear that you were able to return to Japan safely. I hope you continue to be in good health and that you'll have to the chance to come back to Canada again sometime. 🇨🇦
Canada has regional vocabulary just like many large countries. Some of these words are specifically Ontario words, others [likely] are Torontonian. In Saskatchewan, you would be hard pressed to find milk in a bag, and Mounties are our provincial police and local police in smaller centres, so we see them all the time [not on horses, or wearing red, but they are everywhere]. Also, in the US upper midwest they call soda 'pop' too. But the video is still helpful for newcomers. Cheers.
Some terms are generational too. 'Chesterfield' tends to be used by (some) older folks. 'The six' on the other hand, is most popular among young hipsters, especially Drake fans. Older Torontonians would say 'T.O.', 'T-dot', or just 'Tarrana'. And finally, I always spell it 'tuque', maybe because I grew up in Quebec and that' s the French spelling, but it also makes more sense phonetically. No one pronounces it like 'toke'!
As a Canadian I am going to disagree with some of this. #1 - Eh: Eh can certainly make a sentence interrogative, but not always - it depends on where it falls in the sentence (as in, "Hold my beer, eh - I gotta take a whiz!"). In this context it is more like "okay" than "right". Eh can also replace the American "huh" as well (which can often end sentences). Your sample sentence at the top here also uses "eh" in a non-interrogative way. #2 - Hoser: I think you're way off on this one. A hoser simply refers to a "loser" (or contemptible person) and is linked to our great past-time - ice hockey - where the losing team had to stay back and hose down the rink. You don't have to be fat, beer swilling, or male to be a hoser. For the record, this can also be a term of affection among close friends, or be part of light-hearted banter among Canucks. #3 - Alcohol Slang: While the terms two-four and mickey are certainly Canadian, you forgot to mention the 26'er and 40 pounder (lb'er). A 26'er refers to a 26 oz bottle and a 40lber is the 40 ounce variant. These expressions (Mickey, 26'er, and 40lber) all refer to hard liquor bottle volumes. #4 - The Peg: You forgot to mention that Winnipeg is not just The Peg, but can also be referred to as Winterpeg because of the harsh winters it experiences. #5 - Mounties: You should probably explain that the reason YOU don't see Mounties everyday is because Toronto is in Ontario which has the OPP, not the RCMP as their regional police force. Here in the West, we are more likely to see Mounties with the exception of cities that have their own police force (like the VPD in Vancouver). Canadian language is diverse and varies across this massive country of ours - not all regional slang apply across the country (i.e. Bunny-hug - never heard it before). You also missed out on "thongs" (as in the footwear, not the undergarment).
My favourite thing about Canada is "Murdoch Misteries" show - this is why I watched your wideo, I am looking for everything about Canada. Your videos are great. BTW: should I put "a" or "the" before the title of that show (in my first sentence)?
Thanks so much for your comment. ☺️ I also enjoy Murdoch Mysteries 👍🏻 I am very happy to hear that you enjoy my videos. Your sentence is perfect 😉 You don't need to add an article ('a' or 'the') before the title of a TV unless the actually title has 'a' or 'the' (For example: The Simpsons).

I was not for Canada 150. My last trip was one year after, on June 2018 with a group of 45 people for seven days. As a matter of fact, I must tell you that I lived in Montreal for two years with my wife and two children, one of them born there. This was in the sixties, quite a long time ago. Thereafter I have traveled to Canada four more times with my wife and another couple. We visited The Peg, Victoria and of course The Six and some other places. Canucks are kind and very patient to listen carefully to English learners even their English skills are poor. They don't give up on people like us whom have just started studying English. The country takes good care of nature. Most people are also environmentally friendly. I am so happy for that. I can't stop giving compliments.lol so I'll stop now
Wow, what great comments and compliments to read about my country 🥰. I am so happy that you enjoy Canada so much and that my fellow Canucks have done a good job of making you feel welcome and comfortable here. 🇨🇦
Okay, am Canadian, and most were correct but: - eh - no, you’ll hear that very little. Even she uses ‘right’ not eh - ‘The six’ for Toronto is a regionalism and not commonly used, are more likely to hear T.O.. - Milk in bags is more an Ontario thing, most places have the jugs. - Canuck is very rarely used in everyday speech. If somebody means Canadian, they generally say Canadian. - Winnipeg is most commonly, to my experience, called ‘Winterpeg’.
I've watched all your Canadian content and I say I've been well informed with your lovely country, moving there by the end of this month so all this knowledge is very handy
My favourite thing about Canada is that we have the freedom to be critical about our governments (Federal, Provincial, Municipal), especially in regards to how indigenous Canadians have suffered under countless regimes of white supremacist governments. That, and Nanaimo bars! Fun fact: in the 1950s the government in cooperation with the Americans (who were very worried about Russians claiming land in the arctic) sent the Mounties up to the arctic to slay all the Inuit’s dogs so that they couldn’t continue with their traditional nomadic hunting methods. This forced Inuits to live in government issued shanty towns, living on rations of wheat so they could live the White way. The more you know.
Thanks for your comment, Michael. When I read the first part, it was very serious in tone and I agree with you completely. The government treated, and still continues to treat, First Nations in this country terribly and much more should be done to try and compensate them and attempt to make their lives better now after so much oppression. Then when I got to the Nanaimo bar part I suddenly burst out laughing. I enjoy your style of writing; telling it like it is, making the mood lighter with a bit of humour and then packing a final punch with your 'fun' fact about the mistreatment of the Inuit. I was only vaguely aware that something had happened, but to be honest I didn't actually know these horrific details. Thank you for sharing. I hope more people will read your comment.

It's my pleasure, Reba ☺️. Thanks for your nice comment 🤗🇨🇦✨.

Thank you 😊. I'm so glad you enjoyed this video 🇨🇦
Probably the most well-rounded and accurate video I’ve seen on Canadian slang❤️🇨🇦😁
Thanks so much ☺️ It was fun to make.
I find out your TH-cam channel today. And I love how you speak English so clearly! Tks, I am from Brazil 😘
I’m from California and I call it soda!
Tim Hortons is my favorite thing about Canada. Anytime I visit, I search out a Timmies, and because there's one on every other corner, they aren't hard to find. I love Timmies coffee. Starbucks sucks by comparison!
Thanks for sharing, Debbie 🤗🇨🇦. You're right, there are Timmies everywhere here so you don't have to search for too long 😉 ☕️ !
JeN I enjoyed watching your videos. They help to understand the Canadian language a lot better. Thank you for your help.
That was an excellent loon call. I always enjoy learning new things that I didn't know as far as Canadian slang goes, especially considering I've lived in Ontario for 30 years. Molson Muscle got me, I'd never heard that and I was laughing about it.

I’m Japanese and still a English learner, so as I saw your channel name and heard you speak Japanese, I just clicked the subscribe button 😂
Thanks for your watching and subscribing. 🤗 I hope you will find the English lessons on my channel useful. 🌸 I don't speak Japanese in any of my videos anymore, (but I keep studying Japanese because I love Japan). 😉
To hear your classes. Thank you so much. God bless you!
I use those two words a lot but remove the ending like "Beauty" become "Beaut" but that's just me I presume.
“Beauty eh” is usually from a specific group of people
@@bluetheguy4819 I think a lot of people use beaut

JeN's Jyugyou / ジェンの授業 Hogtown is the only one I have ever heard. I think I am showing my age.

Reminds me of my Australian coworker who had just arrived in Canada about a week earlier. I said I had to go to the bank to get some loonies and toonies and she thought I was making some weird joke. I had never really considered how goofy it sounded.
Also,
The fact that you included "give'er" is hilarious to me.
I'm wondering if "T-dot" is completely extinct now. I don't say "the Six" because I'm not a Drake fan.
Guess I'll stick with "Tronnuh" hehe

I’ve never heard dep used before. I’m from British Columbia Vancouver
@@lecoughlan Its Quebec lingo deriving from "depanneur". Practically all of Quebec uses it and so almost 1/4 of Canadians use the term id assume. English and French speakers alike in Quebec use it. My albertan friend had no clue what it was but uses it now.

(People here in Ontario are kind too, but people from Newfoundland seem to be even nicer and more laid back.) 🤗

Only 26? This was so interesting and informative, I could have listened to her for hours. 🙂
Cheers.
Hi Eric 😁. Thank you so much for your feedback on this video. I appreciate your kind corrections and insight 🇨🇦. 👍🏻
You are very funny, and fun to learn Canadian slangs with. ♥
Thanks for your excellent additions and feedback 🤗🇨🇦👍🏻
Tuque, and Bunny Hug - thanks for the Canuck lessons!

Okay, am Canadian, and most were correct but:
- eh - no, you’ll hear that very little. Even she uses ‘right’ not eh
- ‘The six’ for Toronto is a regionalism and not commonly used, are more likely to hear T.O..
