Trying out my new to me 5hp mercury four stroke on a 12’ springbok and going fishing. Motor is strong enough to get me on plane, but planes faster with my six yo sitting up front.
Solo it’s ok. I can get it on a plane on calmer days. Two adults no chance to plane. A light kid to help balance the boat might plane faster. My honest opinion is that if you can find a wide body 12 footer that doesn’t narrow toward the rear that is the best option. In my experience most 12 foot boats taper down at the transom losing some buoyancy. I’m 225lbs and could probably stand to lose a few lbs for the sake of performance 😂

I got the same size boat but only a Honda 2.3hp. Really slow. Put my other Mercury 9.9hp on and she roars! Cheers! 🚤🎣😊

Sometimes I put ballast in the front of the boat.
