This type of series should be mandatory to watch for all newbie drivers

I love watching these old traffic videos. By the way, at 5:29, CIY-056 lasted until 2 December 1996.

I was born in March 1973, so this has added meaning to me. Fascinating to see what made typical traffic back then. Any minutiae captured on film from that era, has me spellbound.
I love that Dept of Transport logo that appears at the start.

Holden , Falcon, Valiant in that order
      Torana, Cortina, Escort, Fairlane, etc
A mix of British and European imports plus early Japanese.
A six cylinder column shift Australian made family car was the norm ...
If you drove a Fairlane, Chrysler or Statesman people thought you were rich.....
There wasn't really a lot of money in the economy

The series seems to be shot in a number of States and other people have noted Brisbane scenes in some of the other episodes so it is likely some of this episode is too. Definitely some Sydney locations in there too. One 500 metres up the road from where the NFSA is now in Pyrmont.

I grew up in Willoughby and there are plenty of shots I recognise around Willoughby Park, Alpha Road, Willoughby Rd, Eastern Valley Way, Fullers Road plus Warringah Road, etc..... I used to ride my push bike in pre OH&S days all around these areas. Love historical images like these.... oh and the defensive driving thing is good too 👍

Uncontrolled intersections?? Difficult to believe they existed in Australia as late as the 1970s. They'd been eliminated in the US many years earlier, and with good reason. They would've been calamities just waiting to happen.

    • @mubd1234
      @mubd1234 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

hebneh They were pretty much phased out by the late 70s in Australia, though they weren't really that difficult to understand - they basically had the same rules as roundabouts, albeit without an island in the middle.

    • @MrGutfeeling

@@mubd1234 Uncontrolled intersections were give way to the right as far as I'm aware. Roundabouts are give way to traffic already in the roundabout.

      Sydney ( lower north shore ) - Artarmon , Willoughby , St Leonards . ( a'mon rd , eastern valley way , mowbray rd , w'by rd , pacific hwy )
overcrowded now , full of high rise a'ptments . it has lost its laid back charm . today it looks & feels like a hyper stressed Hong Kong .

Mate, traffic is beyond saving in Sydney these days.
    Too many people!
And Damn! Everyone just indicates and change lanes all at the same time.
Then what is the point of the indication then?!?
The roads in this video seems very chill.

  • @billmago7991

These were the crazy days of give way to your right.....so you could be cruising down a suburban road when all of a sudden a car could pull out in front of you on a street on your right and you had to give way!!! Lives lost on many occasions

Hardly anybody besides children rode bicycles from the 1960s until about the mid-1990s. It was seen as being poor/unable to afford a car.

Drivers were more skilled back then, no automatic transmissions or cruise control, no seat belts, no air bags, coupled with appallingly shocking roads, higher speed limits and zero alcohol and drug testing meant that driving was an extreme sport.
