- In today’s episode we have a closer look at the RODE NT-USB Mini microphone. This affordable USB microphone records high quality sound for podcasts, livestreams, voice over, and even for vocals for music. The microphone is simple to use, works with Mac, PC, and tablets, and is probably my favorite USB microphone in the $100 price range.

Excuse my voice - still getting over a bit of a sinus situation.
You sounded public radio smooth on that mic.
@@nathanksimpson Thanks Nathan.
Welcome to the club ! It used to be one every other month, for (too) many years.
But, as a voice actor, I can tell you're doing better than most even with a few vents not "operating" right.
Not knowing how you deal with it, I just can advise sinus cleaning with thermal water (+ added mineral salts if needed, but not always). It's like a genuine thermal spa treatment at home, and worked wonders for me : I'm currently down to 1 or 2 per year, a relief.
@@gillesmatheronpro Thanks Gilles - appreciate the advice!
@@curtisjudd I kept it short, but if you need in-depth details fell free to ask. Been doing it for dozens (myself included), with constant positive results, even my Doc gave me thumbs up for my advice.
Really appreciate the additional testing you've added in this video with different voices and different environment. Great job Curtis.
Seconded, and thank your family for being good sports and assisting with the evaluation of all the microphones.
Thanks Bandrew! Always a pleasure to have you drop by!
Hahahaha! 😂
Thanks Jim! 👍
Hi I have tried to use this on video calls using Slack and Zoom. But i get this annoying auto gain control. Using windows 10. Have disabled the option to let external app’s control this device. It’s not helping, anyone here have any suggestions?
Thanks so much for the love Curtis - glad you like the NT-USB Mini! We of course recommend using a DS1 desk stand or PSA1 studio arm with the NT-USB Mini if you want to take advantage of the mic’s proximity effect to get that rich sound. We do find that when on its desk stand and roughly 20cm from the source sound, the mic performs very well (the combination of rubber grommet on the swing mount and internal capsule shockmounting helps to mitigate knocks and bumps compared to many comparable products). It’s also a cool way to store the mic - or even to use it stuck to an upright metal object like a metal cabinet (try it!). The PSA1 is definitely best for live streamers or gamers as it will keep the mic clear of any vibrations from heavy typing on a keyboard. Great review!
Thanks! And thank you for the details on the stand options!
It seems like a great mic with one drawback. There’s no shock mount solution. Are there any plans to come out with one?
Rode Microphones, Can you please refer me a tutorial on how to set this in windows, or at least give me a reference where I can find it windows 10 setting?
dows it have a mute button?
Curtis, you're the KING of all things audio !
Thanks pal!
Wow - that mic sounds great! I really like how clean, natural, and vibrant the voices sound. This was a GREAT review - fantastic!
Thanks Dadvice TV! It is an impressive microphone for the price.
Fantastic sound quality! Looks like a perfect solution for traveling too 😏. Oh... Wait... Traveling... 🎃🥺
Hahaha! Definitely portable.
Kudos to the extra talent; they didi a really great job.. Loved how your wife channeled your reviewing style with the off axis test. All the best to the family.
Hahaha, thanks Kevin, I'll pass it on to them!
I left a ‘like’ for your family. I was there watching your videos long ago but back here after so many years.
🙏
This seems like an awesome mic. I love the magnetic stand attachment- it’s always annoying to remove the stand from the Yeti mic. The sound quality is terrific 😎
Yes, pretty nice that they include the threads for traditional threads without having to spend more than a couple of seconds to set it up. Well considered design.
Awesome that you got your family involved to give us a better view on different voices. Much appreciated! Hope y'all doing well.
Thanks and hope you are well, too!
Very good testing Curtis thank you, I have to say I’m impressed with the sound of the original NT USB as long as size is not an issue, but to be honest the new one is not a bad sound.
👍
Really appreciate the all-hands-on-deck effort towards this video!
Thanks Yishan Chan!
DIG that you put a summary at the start. This is an amazing video through and through.

I purchased this mic back in April based on your review. I have to do a lot of Zoom meetings at different locations so this mic breaks down great to carry in my "Zoom" backpack with my laptop and headphones. You do a great service with your channel, thank you so much.
Thanks Shawn!
Hello Curtis, just want to say "Thank you!" for your review which helped me to make final decision and buy this Rode mic - I want to support local shops, so bought it here in Croatia along with DS1 desk stand. I am *very* happy with the mic which will be mostly used for my live online classes (via Zoom). I was doubting whether my untreated living room will be good-enough despite being in a quiet place - country side and was therefore considering some other options like dynamic mics like Samson Q2U, some AT models etc. Moreover, Blue Jedi, Rode NT USB and few others were also considered from he condenser side. Watched *many* reviews, but your was deciding one and Rode got a new customer thanks to you! Sincerely, Saša.
Thank you Saša. Happy recording and streaming!
Solid review and the family cameo was fun! I may have to snag one of these mics soon. Thx Curtis!
Thx Atomic Pixel!
I know this is a bit late but I wanted to say how much I like this mic so much that I got one for myself and my kid who is a budding streamer. Thanks for your awesome reviews on this mic and audio and lighting in general. I dont think my voice on RPAN has ever sounded so good lol.
👍 happy streaming and recording! Glad it worked out!
Nice. LOVE the sponsor! 👍👍👍

Should i go for nt-usb mini or nt-usb!!
And i'm getting it for cheap price! But i'm thinking maybe its a copy that's why they selling for cheap
I would go for the NT USB Mini because it can work with RODE Connect: th-cam.com/video/u3JWJzdQxI0/w-d-xo.html Also, be sure to buy from an authorized RODE dealer so that you get the warranty and do NOT get a fake.
Ok wow... that’s by far the best video I’ve seen about this mic. Simply fantastic! Congratulations 👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks Carlos! 👍
You are by far one of the finest presenters on TH-cam ... I've been a great fan up here in Alaska on a real Alaskan series .. I'm a full outfitter in pretty good things I think ... I have been very happy with it. I bought it for doing online teaching, and the sound quality has been excellent, despite having to use it in my living room.

Excellent review of the RODE NT-USB Mini microphone that has made me opt for the purchase of my first laptop microphone. I already had an item from the "R0DE" brand as a lavalier microphone for mobile phones. Thank you very much.
Thanks Andrés, I hope it works well for you. Happy recording!
Excellent video. Based on your video, I went ahead and pulled the trigger on the nt-usb. Absolutely no regret! Thank you for making this video.
Thanks, glad to hear it!

Thanks so much, José!
the three talking heads were cool. Emma's a natural. Great review overall. Some interesting tips e.g. regarding multi-mic setup. I've ordered this mic and waiting very impatiently for it to arrive now. I really like the stands you use to bring the mic closer. I think I should get one myself. It really does make a huge difference to audio quality when the mic is close to you than when farther away.
Thanks Richard - I hope it works well for you. Happy recording!
Been a fan of this channel for a loooooonnngggg time now. So much information, done well.

Thanks Asif, unfortunately, I don't have a Windows computer. But, I'll try to see if I can make arrangements.
Best review on rode USB mini i have seen. Great to the point info

Been using this for the past 3 weeks now and it sounds really great, although i would love rode or somebody to give us a frequency response curve for this mic, but what i feel is that it is quite flat with maybe a bit of presence boost otherwise relatively flat sounding to me, but hey i m not an expert so i maybe wrong! Loved your review Curtis, i always look forward to them!!
Thanks Agam Bhasin, I think it is mostly flat with a presence boost as well.

Thank you very much for the aggregated device hint. I did not know about it. Having different voices is really useful.
👍
Lovely family you have there sir, I wish all of you the best of health and happiness, and as usual amazing content !
Thanks Boneteacher! And best wishes to you and yours!
Excellent representation of this mic, particularly because your voice sounds stellar using it. And the comparison was made exceedingly clear when you used the larger Rode mic. If I were you, I'd be using this mic for all my subsequent videos. Likely, a much more expensive tube mic would show off a good deal more detail while maintaining the pleasant warmth of the mini. But for a youtube video, this mic was so ideal that I decided to purchase one myself! Thanks.
Thanks Kenneth and I hope it works well for you!
I about spit my coffee out when the grandmaster was dethroned by his daughter in naming the NT-USB. Consider the torch passed, lol!
Hahaha! Truth be told, I was trying to get the two of them talking a bit more. 😂
It's great that your family is yet in good mood to record this :D great review man!
Yes, things like this actually help the mood. Thanks Victor!
Wow, this is an awesome review Curtis! I'm in the market for a starter mic for VO work, and this has been very helpful. Great job, and nice bumping into you!

I like the small experiments you subject the mic to. Really tells me what I need to know about the mic in a practical way . Subscribed now.

Great review, thanks. Does direct monitoring preclude listening to computer sounds while monitoring?
Thanks Bushbuddy Platypus, I just tested talking into the NT USB Mini while playing back a song in a media player on macOS while in direct monitor mode. I was able to hear myself talking into the mic and the song playing back from the computer at the same time.
Excellent review and very professional.
Thanks Fernando.

Thanks so much for this. I am looking to purchase my first mic and this was super helpful!

Hi great vide! Thx. Which mic would you recommend for ms teams?
If you have a good acoustical space, the NT-USB Mini is a good choice. If not, I'll have a review up in 20 minutes of the new SHURE MV7 which is better for spaces with more ambient noise and no acoustical treatment.
Hi Curtis. In my opinion, for comparing all mics, it's better to use your own voice. So we can notice all differences between those mics.
Thanks for sharing.
Hi @curtis thanks for this vlog valuable information, can u also let us know do u also use sound card along with the mic and is it recommend to use Soundcard I checked out Audient EVO 4 soundcard ,if we are into podcasting and vlogging
Hi Prabodh, no, this connects via USB directly to computer and cannot be connected to audio interfaces.
Excellent review! I recently bought it as my first microphone and am pretty happy with it. I thought I'd buy a boom arm to get it higher but I've been using the box it came in and that works just fine.
Ricardo Toureiro haha I’ve used the box too. Can I ask what input volume you set the mic to?
Great idea!
Hey Curtis, I'm just wondering based off what you mentioned in the video. I'm also looking at another budget cardioid microphone. It's called the HyperX Solocast. The sound quality is great but it has the issue of not having the best stand as well.
You mentioned putting the NT-USB Mini on top of a foam. What kind of a foam would you recommend?
If I put my microphone on top of an XXL mouse pad, would that be enough to negate the bumps on the table and other vibrations caused by typing constantly on the keyboard?
There is also RTX Voice that I started using and I know it would be helpful, but at the same time, when there's a lot of noise, the voice does sound a but more muffled.
I use the foam for studio monitors. I believe Auralex sells some they call mopads, but less expensive options would work here as well.
@@curtisjudd Thank you so much! I suddenly realized I had some foam from furniture deliveries and I'll see how much effect they have first before jumping into another purchase! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Excellent review. Thank you so much! I only had a question. Is the knob for increasing headphone monitoring volume or is it for increasing pickup volume/sensitivity?
The knob is for adjusting headphone volume. Thanks!
@@curtisjudd thank you so much
Your videos have been extremely helpful and I absolutely appreciate all the work that goes into them. I would like your recommendation for 1 challenge I am having with my own audio setup. I'm unable to sit for videos - I just have too much energy and I talk with my hands. I also have the challenge of outside noise (a barking dog, kids outside, etc.) occasionally. I've been using a lav mic which runs through a long cable to my Canon M50. I'd like to take the audio quality up - I feel the lav mic I am using doesn't pick up enough richness or low tones in my voice. Budget is always a concern - so I need to make the right choice when I invest in the equipment. What would you recommend for a rich sounding microphone that can limit ambient noises and connect into a mic-in portion a DSLR?
Hi Dadvice TV, How much do you move around? The reason I ask is that a headset mic might be a good option if you're walking around, though it won't necessarily sound "richer" than a lavalier. A boom mic like a DEITY D3 Pro or RODE VideoMic NTG within about 6 inches of your mouth will certainly produce richer sound, but you'll need to stay on top of it. If you're interested, here's my review of the RODE VideoMic NTG where I boom it about 12 inches from my mouth: th-cam.com/video/c4Pu72J5BRE/w-d-xo.html
From watching this video, you are officially one of the best mic reviewers on this platform (in my opinion at least); keep up the amazing work!
Thanks Tecno 12!
Fabulous video Curtis. Thanks
Thanks Phil.
Loved the review! I see that it comes with a USB C to USB A cable. Do you think a USB C to USB C cable would work? Specially for newer models of MacBook pros that don’t have USB A ports, only C?
Hi Daniel, yes, confirmed it works with a USB-C to C cable into my MacBook. Thanks!
As always great revue and different format from home excellent..
Thanks Darryl!
Great video really appreciate the in depth review. Amazing quality and loved how you compared if to the expensive model.

Hello Curtis. I hope you see this to answer. Can I use this to record audio with my iPad Pro to then take the audio to overlay onto video in lumafusion?
Hi WatchReport.com, this will work with iPad, however, I don't know about lumafusion.
Hey thank you for this - really clear and helpful review. You're great.
Thanks!
what a great review! thanks so much for this!
Thanks Cara!
Can I use this as USB-C to USB-C cable to connect to my laptop for podcasting?
Yes.
Love my Rode NT usb mini.. couldn't agree more with all your observations. I used this mostly for singing vocals. Sometimes the plosives does make it through.
Works really well to record directly on iPad or iPhone. my mini recording setup is far from perfect in acoustics but this mic does really well. 👍
Thanks for your input, Santosh! Happy recording!
Hi Curtis, I have just purchased this Microphone and I am a Classical Singer, and would be recording me singing to Track and also having virtual Singing Couching with my teacher, I would be using my MacBook as Camera but using the NT USB Mic now Thought?
Sounds like a nice upgrade! I hope it works nicely for you!
Thank you for this in depth review!
Will this mic pick up noise from my laptop if I put it right between me and the laptop? I don't have a lot of space for a sophisticated setup on my table and my laptop is a lil noisy.
It rejects sound from the back of the mic, so it will reject some of that noise.
@@curtisjudd You're very kind to take the time to reply! Thank you!! x
Question - if I enable some effects & settings on windows using the RØDE Connect software. Will it be carried over to other devices, like my PS5 or iPad. Bcz I cannot install any software on those devices to control this mic. Please can you answer???
I am looking forward to use this only on my PS5 for streaming, gaming recording. I saw that this has a NOISE GATE built in which is triggered by the software. And software is only on Windows & Mac. So what I'm thinking is, I'll connect this mic to my windows laptop, enable noise filter & then take this to my PS5/ipad. But i need to know if the setting done on windows software will work on ps5/ipad.
Is there a way of improving the rode even more my acer aspire 3 which is new does not seem to have any microphone settings at all. Great voice 👍
Hi Barry, thanks. I'm not sure of the details on the Windows 10 side, but RODE support should be able to help? Or perhaps a kind, fellow Windows person here can help? Best wishes!
Hi Curtis, thanks for this video! I'd like to know if you have any opinion for a USB mic such as the Blue Yeti "X" microphone for doing things like Zoom meetings and online streaming? The Blue/Logitech app interface for audio customization and fine-tuning looks really cool.
Hi Casey415, I haven't used the Blue microphones since the original snowball so I'm not sure. But worth checking Podcastage's review. Best wishes!
@@curtisjudd Thanks for replying Curtis, you're the best!

Great review, Curtis. Do you know if this mic is compatible to record on an iPhone via USB-C to Lightning cable?
It didn't work on my iPhone XS Max. But I didn't spend a lot of time trying to troubleshoot it. I suspect the phone cannot supply enough power for the microphone. However, it does work with iPad.
Hi Curtis. Loved the video. I wanted to ask if this mic works when you directly to iPad. And also, if you can connect 2 or more to the iPad. Thanks.
Thanks, yes, it does work with iPad, you just need a USB to lightning adapter or USB C for the iPad Pro. I don't know if it is possible to connect more than one to iPad. Hmmm....
Sir, Thanks for a detailed reply, but i have confusion :
Please tell me,
-Type of USB Port provided on “ RODE NT USB Mini” itself.
- Each end of the cable provided by RODE has which USB type ( is it that both ends of cable has Usb-C)
Thanks and Regards

Hi Govind, the end of the cable for the microphone is USB-C, the end for the computer is USB-A. Happy recording!

Hi, Thanks for your professional sharing and introduction. I do purchase one after seeing your video. Do you have any suggestion for the Mic stand like the ones you used for the Rode NT-USB Mini? Many thanks!
Thanks Herbert. I put a link for the newer version of the stand I use in the description of the video (sorry for the inconvenience - FCC prefers the links in the description vs. comments). Best wishes!
Awsome review! Very useful, thank you.
Thanks Andre.
My only concern is how close I have to be the mic. Starting a vidcast/online learning. What do you recommend for mic distance of around 15 inches?
So tempted to buy this though for the quality and size. I can travel with it, which is awesome!
If you're going to be farther away, like 15 inches, I'd recommend a shotgun microphone like the RODE VideoMic NTG instead: th-cam.com/video/c4Pu72J5BRE/w-d-xo.html
Would you recommend the Sennheiser Profile USB microphone over the RODE NT-USB Mini if you disregard the physical controls? I like that the RODE one is smaller, but I haven't seen any comparisons online, so I don't know if it sounds better or worse.
You can hear them by opening this video in one tab, and my Sennheiser profile video in another tab: th-cam.com/video/LoUaYhbRZQ4/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
Hi. Can you suggest me which one is better option for me. out of these 2 i have to chosse one. i.e rode nt mini vs senheiser profile usb.
I have to use it in a little untreated room to record or to deliver fitness podcast and some time for some demonstration too.
I have to purchase it one time. So need your perfect advice.
Thanks.
Both mics need to be close so I don’t think either are great for exercise demos.
Another awesome review! 👍😃
Thanks Justin!
Hi Curtis, I have a question for you. How does mixing audio between the computer and the mic input work on the mini when monitoring through the headphone out? I notice that the standard NT has a mix knob that the mini lacks. Hope you and your family are safe and well!
Hi Funkbutterfly, If you are recording yourself, then it is probably best to switch to the direct monitor mode. But if you're on a call or livestream with remote guests, then you'll want to switch to computer audio. The call and streaming apps will generally NOT play you back to yourself so it works fine. Where this mic is NOT a good fit is if you're doing overdub recording - e.g., you first record instrument tracks, then record vocal tracks while the instrument track(s) play back and you sing along. That's where the original NT-USB's monitor mix feature is critical. Hope that helps!
Excellent thoughtful review, really enjoyed watching it, your channel is definitely worth subscribing to, best wishes!
