Thanks! I didn’t know about the nitrogen, and I’ve put cuttings just in potting soil and milk jugs, I just cut away the top front half, poked drain holes in the bottom, and kept the neck and handle still on, set the jug with labeled cuttings in produce bags to make a little greenhouse, corners of the bags also nipped for drainage, all with 100% success on Euonymus Manhattan, and mostly successful on others, but it depends on the plant for sure.
I did notice the ones I had to delay to get set in soil, but kept in a bucket of water, rooted very well after a time (I keep notes for every pot, with the name, date, techniques-and what was done or not done, etc.). I had just figured it must’ve given them a chance to absorb more water or something, perhaps it was clearing out the nitrogen as well. Either way, I will use these tips, because I’m about to do another batch in the next week or so. Some are already in their permanent homes.
I wish I’d known how easy it was to propagate years ago, it wasn’t affordable to buy all the needed plants for privacy along the fenceline, nor for other areas, either. I get cuttings wherever I can. Some people are more than happy to have someone (me) trim their shrubs up for them for the low price of letting me keep the cuttings. Some businesses are willing, especially if you can see the plants are overgrowing, and it improves their image. Of course ask first. I just tell them I need some cuttings for a project (it’s true), and ask if they mind if I trim the shrubs up a bit for them if I can keep the cuttings, and I don’t go overboard, just maintain their shape. So far, they’re very pleased to have a freebie trim up. It would have been great to know all this 20 years ago...but better late than never!
