The entire ball needs to completely cross the line for it to be a goal. You can imagine a permeable wall that extends up from the line, and every part of the ball needs to go completely through that wall.
Same rule applies for going out over the touch line for a throw-in, or across the goal line for a corner or goal kick.

It's also worth pointing out that most official games nowadays (for big leagues at least) have the goal line technology that lets the ref know if the ball has gone over the line or not (note that this is also different from VAR, it's a tech that doesn't need any human assistance to work and lets the ref know on his watch), so goals are never missed (unless there's some deffect with the tech off course)

Rather than guessing on most of the closer shots, goalkeepers can often tell by a player’s body shape where the ball is going to go. The next thing to do then is go that way and make yourself as big as possible. Some of it admittedly will be guesswork though.
The one with the head wasn’t showboating either. His team mate kicked it too him, so he can’t use his hands. A rule invented to stop the keeper rolling it to a defender then picking it up after he passes it back repeatedly to waste time when a team is winning

@@DrunkTexanSays if you watch a few entire matches from the 1970s, for example, you’ll see a lot of such time wasting, and also defenders passing it to the goalie if pressed by a striker, because the goalie could pick it up and take a long kick without having to fear the striker pressing him. Welcome to some of the clips of Manuel Neuer in his prime. The guy (while now on the rear end of his career) redefined goalkeeping both in the german league and on the international stage. He sometimes plays a third of the entire field ahead of his goal, acting as a distributor ON TOP of his goalkeeping duties. Completely redefined how goalkeepers are included in offensive buildup play. Highly recommend you search a compilation of him specifically, he's done some CRAZY stuff over the years, including being the Glove of the Tournament in Germany's 2014 winning run in the World Cup in Brazil.

Also, on the save where the keeper was sprinting all the way back down the field, something teams do in a losing situation when they get a corner kick is push the keeper up for the corner. As keepers are typically among the tallest players on the pitch, it often takes a strong aerial defender away from marking a better offensive player, and overloading the box gives the losing side a better chance of scoring.

7:20 the goalie was so far away (i'm not sure of the exact context), but generally, when you're losing and there's a corner kick, which should be the last "action/play" of the game, the goalie come out to help because he's often the tallest on the team

7:19 I don't know the entire context of that specific play, but sometimes, if the team is awarded a corner kick when one goal behind or tied with few minutes to go, the goalkeeper heads over to the other box so that there is an extra player that could head the kick into the net. It's essentially a desperation attack, but sometimes it works and the goalie scores.

When the ball is to close you just make yourself big and hope you get hit, and not in the face or balls. And the dirty secret of all those amazing saves is you stretch yourself way beyond the body is used to and should be able to do. It can hurt quite a lot the day after, especially if you get a couple of them in a game.

As a lot of people have said, the ball has to completely cross the goal line for a goal to count, doesn't matter if it's in the air or on the ground when it crosses it (same for throw-ins, goal kicks, corner kicks, etc). However, until the 2014 world cup, it was mostly at the ref's discretion in cases when it wasn't super clear, or if the ball bounced back outside the goal. Now we've got Goal Line Technology, where there's a certain amount of high-speed, high-resolution cameras pointed at each goal at various angles, and if the ball crosses the line, the ref is notified with their wristwatch vibrating, that's why if you watch games you might sometimes see the ref and their assistants carrying the ball into each net, to check if GLT works. FIFA execs were against the implementation of technology in the game because of fears that it'd remove the "human element", but as we've seen even with VAR, ref mistakes are far from being things of the past.
One of the most infamous cases was in the 2010 world cup RO16, when English midfielder Frank Lampard's goal at the 38th minute was disallowed: ball hit the crossbar, bounced into the goal (pretty far in, too) and right back out. Neuer, the German keeper, couldn't do anything. Would've been pretty important given the fact that they would've been able to come back from being down 2-0 to tying the game in like 2 or 3 minutes, but they ultimately lost 4-1

The goalkeeper saving with his head at 5:29 only used his head because the ball was passed to him from his own defender. The only way the defender can pass the ball back to the keeper and the keeper can take it with his own hands is when the defender passes the ball using his head. Also the ball needs to be on the air before he heads it, he can't just flick the ball upwards and then head it. A bit confusing for beginners, but simple to execute once you know it.

    two things:
    1. if a player passes the ball to his own keeper using his legs or feet, then the keeper is not allowed to use his hands.
    2. the ball has to pass the line entirely to be considered a goal, no matter the position within the posts.

My man, it’s 10am here so not drinking yet. But usually dark & stormy’s or margaritas from The Netherlands.
Been checking out your content since last week, it’s great to see you enjoy football and being so open to it!
Also to help you clarify a couple of things:
    - the ball needs to be completely over the line to be considered a goal or out of play, so that also goes for the touchlines. It doesn’t matter if the ball is in the air or not.
    - a keeper isn’t allowed to grab a ball that has been returned to him by his teammates feet. Any other bodypart (except for hands and arms ofcourse) is legal.
    - offsides only counts on the moment the ball is played to an attacker that is both behind the 2nd last defender (the goalkeeper counts as a defender) and is on the opposition’s half. So if he’s broken though he isn’t offside necessarily.
    - this isn’t football related but pissed means drunk in uk english.
If you’ve got a discord channel or something I’d love to show you some cool football content you might like. Anyways thanks for the video!

The save at 5:14 had to be saved with something else then the hands or arms since it was a pass from a teammate to the keeper. The rule is that you cant grab the ball when it is passed to you by a teammate or else you get a red card.

Is a rare occurence but sometimes the goalkeepers go out of their zone to play as a regular player, this is usually when the team is already losing by one goal and there is almost no time left, having one extra player can make the difference in last second corners and free kicks.

Every keeper has their own style of what gives them the focus and ability to pull off some of the "impossible" saves such as the point blank headers or 70 mph balls these players are hitting. As an ex keeper myself (sunday league not pro) there are a lot of tell tale signs, players often use their eyes, so even if they don't turn their head to look, they will glance to get a good idea before the shot, the body language too because if a player is in a certain position like leaning back and slightly to the left you know they are going to try bend it high (depending how far back they lean) to their right etc or if they are at an angle they are limited with what they can do so that is give it a moment to see how they adjust for the shot and that split second of patience can give you all the information you need. And I can't speak for all, but for me there was a lot of "anger" and adrenaline, and that added a lot of focus, especially for dangerous situations throwing myself into a crowded group of players all kicking and jumping, or a speeding bullet of a ball, things just seemed to slow down a bit. I knew a keeper that used to joke that the ball was his brother in laws face and he just wanted to grab it or punch it as hard as he could, he was amazing to watch as well. He had trophies and medals to spare

The save with the head is to prevent becoming foul of the backpass rule. The rule is that the GK can't use his hands/arms if his own teammate has deliberately kicked the ball to him, so by heading it the GK prevents the opponents getting a free kick 3 yards away from the goal

Gianluigi Buffon... guy was making unreal saves for decades. One of the longest careers ever at the very top level.
The video where the keeper was so far out of his goal: This was likely at the very end of the match, his team needed a goal, and it was probably a set piece (corner kick or free kick due to a foul). So what they did was put everyone with decent height and strength in the box and kick it hoping one of them can get their head on it and score... but it failed and there was a fast counter attack.
Goal line technology has improved a lot, so some of these older controversial ones might be goals today.

We practice so often on shot stopping that you can immediately predict where the ball is going. The only times you may see a goalie really guess is penalties.

Essentially, in the most simplest way to understand, if the ball is 99% inside the goal it is NOT a goal. The ball needs to completely pass the lie in order to be outside of the pitch (inside the goal is considered outside the pitch). The ball does not have to touch the net or the ground for a goal. And this go's for any of the lines delineating the pitch. The ball must pass the line completely for it to be considered outside of the pitch (the playing field).
