  • Today, we commemorate #Juneteenth, a significant day in American history that marks the end of slavery in the United States and a "second" Independence Day.
On June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger, arrived in Galveston, Texas, assuming command over the Military District of Texas and establishing military control, issuing General Order No. 3 formally enforcing provisions of the Emancipation Proclamation two years after it was issued. Today we celebrate the end of slavery and freedom for all Americans.
Juneteenth is a time to reflect on our history, celebrate progress, and recognize the Black Soldiers who fought and sacrificed to ensure the Constitution fulfilled its promise to all Americans.
From the Buffalo Soldiers, who served courageously in the post-Civil War era, to the Smoke Jumpers of World War II who bravely fought Japanese "fire balloon" bombs and wildfires, Black Soldiers have significantly contributed to the strength and resilience of our Army. Their dedication and sacrifices have helped shape the Army into a more inclusive and formidable force.
As we honor Juneteenth, we also reaffirm our commitment to fostering an environment where every soldier can serve with dignity and respect. The U.S. Army continues to strive for a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion, ensuring that all who wear the uniform have the opportunity to excel and lead.
Let us use this day to educate, celebrate, and reflect on the importance of freedom and equality, recognizing the profound contributions of Black Soldiers throughout our history. Together, we honor their legacy and work towards a future where liberty and justice are truly for all.
