  • The American Civil War is one of the deadliest in US History, and let's just get this out of the way: it was about slavery. In the more than 150 years since the end of the Civil War, there have been many attempts to litigate the reasons for the war, but the reality is that the root of the division was slavery. As such, Black Americans experience in that war is particularly interesting. Today, we'll learn about how Black people fought and participated in the war, the Emancipation Proclamation, and lots more.

I had no idea Harriet Tubman had such an incredible life. I was only ever told about the Underground Railroad, never about her time as a spy or a soldier. Simply amazing woman, why isn't she on the $20 bill yet?

As a non-American, the civil war is my favourite war to learn about and this video has done such a great job of teaching me about arguably the most important and yet least talked about perspective: the black American one. Thank you so much for the great video.

I can't deny that I cried watching this. So much truth that people in this country deny even today was revealed during that war. And it was nice to hear a tale of optimism and struggles rewarded after the horror that was the Dred Scott decision two weeks ago.

Having recently talked about the situation of Black Civil War soldiers in my Civil Rights class this video seems really well written. Also the use of the genuine confederate flag even for a short time in editing is really helpful.
