    I SWEAR by the warm water for birthing male guppies! I've tried it for a year now, and it's seems to be true! Every tank with cold water, I got all females. When I kept the tank 80-82° F , I got many more males.

    Inbreeding is not the problem. But if there is a hereditary defect in the DNA, it is reinforced with each generation of inbreeding. First of all, it is a good idea to have a fixed breeding group. All offspring immediately. Keep the breeding stock for life. Then the inbreeding doesn't go that fast either. If the guppies look good, you can replace a dead animal with a beautiful animal from the offspring. If you prefer to buy a new one, it's more difficult. A new animal can bring disease and cause disaster. Therefore, put the new guppies in a separate container. And after six months you use daughters from the quarantine group to supplement your breeding group. (For example, you replace all breeding females)
    If you want to avoid overcrowding, look at the young guppies with a magnifying glass after two or three weeks. The females have a dark spot on the back of their abdomen, near the base of their tail. Separate them from brothers and nephews at that age. Because young males can fertilize their sisters and nieces within four or five weeks. The female stores the sperm until she is fertile and then she becomes pregnant. But if you separate them in time, a female tank and a male tank, the females will grow longer. They grow bigger and you don't have an overcrowded tank.

    No heater in all the tanks and the room temperature is 70? Everything I've read says to raise temperatures for breeding 78-82 or so but this guy is having great success at 70 and I'm sure he knows what he is doing. Can someone explain? I'm not a breeder but what temperature is best?

    • @MichaelsFishRoom
      @MichaelsFishRoom  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The warmer the more active they will be and usually more males. They will breed in the low 70's if conditions are right.

    I don’t quite understand the white on the tail. Thought that indicates that the tail was still growing but he thinks it’s an indicator of water quality. Now this may just be in his room. Have you experienced this as well Michael?

    • @DGrey
      @DGrey 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think there are 2 kinds of white on the tail. 1 that indicates more growth and the other is like a fringey white, possibly fungus starting, that is from water quality dropping. I think the blood flow that the males need to get to the end of their tail is not functioning as well as it should at that point. The tail degrades rapidly after that.

      I have a 60 (65?) gallon community aquarium with a small assortment with plenty of room to grow. I did rescue 2 overly harassed females that thought her births were simply new plates brought out for the all-you-eat buffet. So I ended up with 3 fry leftover in a breeder box, and decided to keep the group. Basically, if more females are harassed to the brink of death, I don’t plan on keeping the plastic separated in place. I really don’t want 50 platy in my aquarium, have no small mom n’ pop store anywhere nearby. So, nature will therefore take it’s course. NOW: lmao, what’s a good grow out environment for them? Right now they’re in a small plastic critter carrier with a bubbler and a bit of small plastic plant to hide in for comfort. I know the ammonia levels will slowly rise without filtration and a water change will be on the plate, but with fry less than half the size of a tadpole, that’s gonna suck.......The End.

    The worst part is that guppies are meant to live to 2 years. The fact that modern strains don't mean there's a whole range of genetic defects causing conditions in their organs or a system that we never see, and it's all because of inbreeding. If a healthy male that you've had since it was a fry is healthy until one day when it kicks the bucket, there's a 95% chance that one of it's organs or body systems died on it due to a genetic defect that we can't selectively breed out of the highly inbred and compromised strains. It's highly unlikely to be a disease as with stock with such weak immune systems, once one gets something and falls to it's death, every other guppy in the tank will get the same thing. Of course, it could be that an ageing immune system that is already terrible doesn't efficiently clear out opportunistic or pathogenic organisms anymore and they grow until the tipping point where they cause a severe disease. You wouldn't notice this in a fish; it might have been suffering from mild digestive symptoms a while before it dropped dead, most probably from spreading to another organ and causing it to fail. Imagine a fish with a mild stomach ache that kind of just lingers as the pathogen grows; you won't notice this. Eventually the pathogen spreads to the liver or kidneys and causes organ failure. You'd see this as the fish pretty much dropping dead.

      @MichaelsFishRoom  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      DOUG?

    • @DGrey
      @DGrey 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Everything that dies is technically from organ failure. My swordtail guppies live up to 2 years. I guess you are talking about highly inbred guppies but ifga breeders run 2 or 3 lines of each strain to cross in to the main line every few generations. I don't know what else you are trying to say. My first cat lived to be 22. The next one lived 11. It wasn't inbreeding, it was the cat foods that do them in.

    • @cryoraptora303tm2
      @cryoraptora303tm2 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't worry, I'm not dissing Doug or anyone else who breeds guppies. It's an unfortunate fact of selective breeding. Obviously some guppies live their full lifespan and others don't. In cases where it's the guppy's fault for having a genetic condition that nobody knows about, there's nothing anyone can really do. Environmental factors like food, when a female gets pregnant, how well they're kept etc. will affect it significantly, but I'm more talking about the genetic side of things. I have no doubt Doug and others like him take very good care of their fish.
      I'm not against selective breeding at all. I'm not one of these mental advocates of nature or anything like that. I'm just simply stating why a lot of fancy guppies these days don't live their full lifespan. Of course, part of it is based in belief, but I believe the science behind it makes sense. Take royal families for example: Queen Victoria had haemophilia, although you wouldn't know that from just looking at her. Because the European royal families weren't very diverse, this genetic condition was able to spread among her descendants, with many dying of complications related to injuries. This could also be the case in selective breeding; a genetic condition that isn't obvious could start spreading through the population as more inbreeding occurs. Obviously I'm not suggesting that the guppies cut themselves accidentally and die from haemophilia but it could be a number of other conditions affecting the efficiency of certain organs or body systems. A very commonly implicated one is the immune system, which is where the example of pathogens building up over time and then giving the appearance of a fish dropping dead when it finally spreads to other organs or around the body, when really the fish was suffering for a while. Like I said, I'm not implying that it's anybody's fault, there's literally nothing anyone can do about this scenario if it occurs. There are many different ways a weak immune system could lead to a premature death that looks sudden. There's also many genetic diseases that could affect internal organs or processes that eventually catch up to the fish and cause premature organ failure. Guppies and livebearers in general dying from a pathogenic cause is so common now that people don't even bother to investigate what the cause was; it's just taken as a fact of life, which it is because it's not preventable in the short or medium term. I'm not saying people should start selecting against possible genetic diseases like this, because that's totally unreasonable; there's no way to see if they are there apart from genetic testing which nobody is going to do, and I wouldn't expect them to.
      Basically, what I'm saying is that guppies die prematurely. It just happens. It's nobody's fault. Sorry if I came across as criticising anyone.

      Also, you can argue that inbreeding is kept to a minimum by the IFGA rules, but ultimately inbreeding still occurs on a large scale, so it doesn't stop, it's just slowed down. I'm not here to argue though so that's the end of that.

      @King Leopold What? How is this optimistic or pessimistic in any way? This is what happens with guppies nowadays. Most won't make it to 10 months old. Virtually none achieve the full 2 year lifespan.

The babies were amazing colored up blue silvery, black . I loss a whole tank of about 60 fish the temp dropped and my heater was shot smh. I fished out 5 living ones and now they are thriving again. I had them all in a small tank with a few other male guppies..I'm transferring them to a 20 gallon tall this weekend.

    As I understand it, these are the meanings of the names for guppy patterns:
    Snakeskin = Fine pattern of wavy lines on body, usually metallic
    Cobra = Vertical bars on the body, may or may not also have a snakeskin pattern
    (There's also an extreme form of snakeskin that is basically a bunch of small dots, but AFAIK, it doesn't have a name)
    Mosaic = Coarse pattern of wavy stripes on fins
    Lace = Fine pattern of wavy stripes on fins
    Leopard = Round spots on fins (may have smear-like spots, but not joined into stripes like mosaics)
    Galaxy = Strain name that went viral; not associated with a particular gene. Usually refers to guppies with both snakeskin and lace patterns that are not red or yellow.

    • @MichaelsFishRoom
      @MichaelsFishRoom  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on what you read! Lol
