I bought this game after hearing everyone and their mother comparing it to Morrowind as I'm currently on a elderscrolls/TES-like bender while my actual Skyrim modlist is on the fritz, (getting the CK engine to work the way you want it to can be like trying to appease the machine spirit, sometimes.) I like it actually, I like it alot, but if anything this game seems closer to King's Field than Morrowind or anything pre-morrowind, (Which makes complete since, considering that it seems the game the devs published just before this one DIRECTLY states King's Field as inspiration.) There's no looting arms and armor, no third person camera, and you can't even name yourself, not to mention ALL of your attacks actually hit (regardless of whether or not they're blocked or otherwise effectively nullified.) If anything, the way I think about it, Morrowind/TES-type games are akin to CRPGs in a 3d environment and this is more like an ImSim.Still a great game though, and of course another great review, hoss!

Thanks for another great episode man. Love your channel, and very based for repping meal prep and being anti-content. This game definitely looks like a must-buy for me.
Important note: I feel like the GoPro/bodycam for cooking is sorta foggy/blurred? Maybe it’s a lens smudge or humidity or something, hopefully not a new lens needed. Not a criticism or anything (some POV footage is always nice in cooking instruction), just a hopefully-useful fyi from viewer-side

@@venommillan1102I think the exploration, worldbuilding, and questing elements are why alot of ppl draw comparisons to TES games. If you havent played lunacid, I would highly reccomend that game, it feels very much like a spiritual successor to the kingsfield and shadow tower games and has more of a focus on dungeon crawling and hunting down secrets. Both are great games and Im so happy to see indie devs make incredible games inspired by classics we love

I love the anti sponsorships. It's so nice to not have crap hawked at me for a change. Totally understand why TH-camrs do it, they need to eat and stuff, but I do kinda miss the days where TH-cam actually paid their creators and SponsorBlock wasn't nigh mandatory to keep your own sanity.

Personality increasing health regen reminds me how in Savage Worlds "spirit" -- basically charisma -- dictates how easy it is for your character to get back up after taking damage (failing that roll makes you waste a turn). Very useful.

I love your cooking segments, in a way they kind of sum up what makes your channel special. I have severe depression to the point where I can't even bring myself to play video games 99% of the time, despite wanting to. I have to enjoy them vicariously though channels like yours and have a backlog just sitting there on my computer. I know I'd love them but I just can't find it in me. The same applies to my food, mostly oatmeal and frozen dinners when i do decide to eat. Your channel gives me the mental stimulation I need but also teaches me life skills that I wouldn't have otherwise. Your positivity is infectious and inspires me to be better. Your "your (insert thing) is art, not content" mentality is one I share but seldom apply to myself, despite being a music producer and street artist, or at least trying to be. Your art motivates me to be a better version of myself, occasionally make a real meal and keep moving forward, no matter how slow. You're a force for good in a deeply cynical world. Doubt you'll ever see this but thanks Charl, you've helped me develop as a person while entertaining and informing me about vidya. Keep doing you.

Yes, Dread Delusion is like classic Elder Scrolls. But it’s also like Deus Ex. Or Legacy of Kain. Or Fallout. Or Thief. Or Planescape: Torment. Not because it plays like them, looks like them, or is written like them; but because at its heart, it is like them a labor of love that deploys all of its imagination to immerse you in another world… and it's something you see less and less in big video games releases.

@@ayeyuh6920 Not all the games I've listed would qualify as immersive sims and it's debatable if Dread Delusion fits the criteria (it has less emergent gameplay than expected), but exploring its world definitely made me feel the same I've felt playing Deus Ex or Dishonored.

@@HerculeDevantrien Nah I know lol I just didn't know if you knew that genre existed or not. I'd say Dread Delusion fits perfectly though. Immersive sims don't necessarily need a ton of depth to the gameplay, it's more about choice and freedom and, well, immersion lol

      @badabomb9946 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

I remember many years back I watched a video about a game, which I only recently rediscovered is called Miasmata, which features a mapping system where you have to triangulate your location using landmarks, and can fill in the map around you from there. I always thought that was neat.

    • @tj3423
      @tj3423 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

There's a survival game called The Long Dark that has good mapping system too. In order to map you have to have a piece of charcoal in your inventory and it has to be daytime with good visibility. Mapping passes a small amount of time that you're vulnerable during but fills in a radius around you on the map that would otherwise just be a black screen. Might be worth checking out if you like that type of exploration in a game.

To add something about the meal prep. If you have a branch of Kroger in your area (different names based on state) you can usually get a whole salmon slab wild caught frozen for $7 roughly. Hearing about the Delusion system makes me want to play this even more. The only other game with something similar that I know of is Underrail's Oddity XP system, where finding random items with little lore descriptions around the world is the only way to gain XP. Sometimes they'll drop off of enemies but they'll mostly be found organically while searching containers. It's cool having a system that forces you to explore and learn about the world for character progression, and gives even more reason to engage in RPG dumpster diving.

Okay, I'm not normally the type to comment but I feel like I've got something I want you to hear... or read I guess. Please read past the abrasive bit, I assure you I have no intent to insult you or offend you.
I've been watchin' your work for a while now. I'm confident that if we were to meet, irrespective of the existence of this channel, at best we'd be polite and professional with eachother, maybe sustaining a begrudging and strained friendship if we had to. Different personality types or so.
That is said because I think it showcases my sincerity when I say that I respect the hell out of you and what you're doing with this channel.
When I first heard you say "Your art isn't content." I thought it was pretentious and self serving. (you might be able to see why I think we've got opposing personalities)
I kept watching your work because you keep finding and showcasing interesting games.
Then you kept it up. You continued to work harder to produce more and raise your quality wherever you could, further doing everything you can to minimise the cost of your art, for your audience.
This is not how a self serving pretentious person acts. You are blatantly a man of principle and I cannot express clearly enough how much I think that matters.
I try to be the same way with what I do. Your persistence and conviction has influenced me. I have grown to dislike the word content, directly as a result of you.
Keep it up as best you can, just please don't burn out. Remember that humans need enrichment too. I humbly suggest a holiday, abroad if and when you can. I highly recommend Kruger National Park in South Africa, it's a beauty unlike any other I have seen on Earth, save for Lake Kariba, but that's in a very dangerous and expensive country.
That last bit isn't the most important part of this, I'm just not sure how to express well wishes properly. I hope you and The Boy are happy and healthy both now and for many, many years to come.

Just a few recommendations for videos but keep it up, I love seeing these indie titles I’ve never heard of. It's a good game, I don't think it has much in common with any Elder Scrolls, specially Morrowind, except maybe the graphics and that it's 'weird', but the gameplay itself and what it offers in terms of immersion, it definitely shows that it's an indie game and not enough resources to make an expanded setting with more branching narrative paths and evolving world that truly changes with character's decision. On it's own , it's a fun with incredibly simplistic gameplay and sometimes even boring combat, and World that feels very linear if you're used to Morrowind. But, the narrative and the lore def carries the game, it's very interesting.

It's weird but I noticed certain kinds of people will review games like this on Steam very negatively purely because they aren't as expansive as older RPGs, like they were expecting a tiny team to be able to just whip up a full Morrowind. There's a lot of that about Lunacid as well. People need to appreciate how hard it is to just create a few really good areas that fit together well, never mind how difficult it is to consider how all the systems interact with each other.

    Incredible exploration, visuals, story-telling, etc.
Simple and repetitive combat, doesn't really offer any rpg builds or playstyles that are all that different, as I recall stealth isn't so much as an option as "stay away from your enemies to keep out of combat".
I also would have loved more variety and detail in NPC designs, when most characters are descibed wonderfully in-dialogue but many models look essentially the same or are simple. And, although they may not have had the budget for it, voice acting would have made at least the main questline/characters all the more immersive. I think, more than most Indie games, this is one game that I could really feel the limitations of that Indie budget, rather than the limitations being something controllable and "for artistic purposes". That may be due to their scope and ambition, and I won't deny they hit it out of the park with the open world. It could use a little more love in some areas imo but its undeniably a lovingly crafted game.
This game is really all about the creativity, exploration, and story, rather than... well, anything else. My biggest gripe is still probably the combat, but then, I suppose games of the past that it takes inspiration from may not have been all too stellar in that department either.
Petty gripes aside, this is SUCH a fun and cool game. I got sucked in. I also appreciated not being able to save scum or reload a save if I don't like a story choice I made, it caused me to really dwell on choices.
Not sure if you've covered it yet, speaking of similar titles, but I'd love to hear your thoughts on Lunacid, Charl. I started playing them both around the same time this summer, and they're both great.

I see people comparing this game to Elder Scrolls which confuses me as someone who has played the demo years ago and finished the full release version this year because it's a lot more like Gothic than Morrowind besides the obvious mushroom tree aesthetic.

Oh I've been watching it since EA release, I've just been waiting for the right time to make a video about it. There's quite a few games I've been keeping my eye on but for one reason or another they're not ready for videos yet. I'd feel terrible if I showed something off that wasn't quite ready for what little exposure I could give it and end up hurting the game's overall publicity.

I generally quite liked it, the aesthetic is amazing, the worldbuilding is very cool, and I appreciated that the game was fundamentally uninterested in grinding and really did everything it could to incentivize exploration. I do have some criticisms, mainly that I found the game a bit frontloaded. everything laid out in the introductory missions is great, but it doesn't really develop all that much as you get further into the game. enemies will have more health and hit a bit harder (which is mostly fine, though stuff in the last couple areas did start to feel a bit spongy), but you don't really need to do anything different to fight them, and can usually just run right past without much difficulty. the airship you eventually unlock is neat too. but you get it _very_ late in the game, and there's only a few new places to go with it. further, while it's clear that the developers wanted players to explore as much as possible, the rewards for doing so unfortunately really fall off later on. throwing knives and a few coppers just don't really matter outside the early game. while, if you want to use bows as a major source of damage, you'll end up short on arrows very quickly.
I'm being a bit critical, but I really did like what was there and have no regrets about purchasing and playing the game, I just wanted a little more than what I got. I will be keeping an eye on future projects from these devs, and really look forward to checking out whatever they come up with next.

Dread delusion is close to nier automata for me: on a surfice jyst a good game with some funservice (Dread Delusion is late 90 and early 2000 nostalgia, and nier is...nier) but both turned out to be deep philisophical creations with an actual meaning. I do love those types of games, I really do.

What you say at the minute 12-13 about getting lost in the world is both interesting and concerning. Oblivion is a horrendous example for that. Sure, it has a big world to get lost in, but the main quest doesn't want you to. You are the Hero, you have to Save The World. Now! Schnell! Sooner than that! You Were Already Late Ten Minutes Before Purchasing The Game! It All Hinges On You!
Sure, there's no real damage if you postpone it for months in game or IRL, but if anything, that it's even more immersion breaking. Don't create urgency if you can't or don't want to enforce it otherwise the believability of your world falls apart.
So, what is the plot of Dread Delusion? Does it accomodate or even encourage forgetting about it (like, to remain in Bethesda's world, how Morrowind does), or did you forget about it despite its best effort? That's a crucial point to me.

    • @GameDevYal

Without having played it myself yet, the way Charl summarizes it as "you're an unwilling agent of the inquisition" makes it sound like it would be in-character for the player to drag their feet; they don't have any personal stakes in the main plot and would rather get out of it if possible.
