Kimbal Musk: Can real food feed the world? - Couple Thinkers - EP 1

  • Couple Thinkers kicks off by thinking about how to feed the world. Craig and Megan want to know more about how to live a more sustainable life and they know just the person to ask. Kimbal Musk (yes, he’s Elon’s brother) is a man with a plan. He wants to transform food production from something big and industrial to being more local and organic. Step one, he believes, is to get kids interested - and he’s created a revolutionary way to do it because, as he says, “Food is the new internet!”. Want to discover more visit www.gant.com/

    Oh my goodness! I'm so glad I found this! I love Craig Ferguson. I feel like I owe him a debt of gratitude. Back in 2011, husband got very sick and we were overwhelmed with everything. I was way down in the dumps and didn't even realize how much so. One night I found clips of the Late Late Show on TH-cam and started watching, all of a sudden I found myself laughing, out loud, and realized I hadn't laughed in way too long. That set me back on the road to moving forward and making the best of. I've always felt I needed to say thanks to Craig for the laughs, they really helped. So if he anyway gets these messages...thanks for giving me my laugh back! I look forward to this series, it looks very interesting. ~Dawne

    The saddest part for me is that for low income groups (yes I fall in there) is that the price of "real food" is prohibitive. It is just too expensive. Still much cheaper as in half the price to buy processed rather than real. I live in New Zealand where there is an abundance of fresh food grown but when shopping I need to decide if it is worth it rather than pay the power bill or the rent. To many folks living here are faced with the same issues. So the stores do not stock the items as they cannot sell them in many areas. Means that "real food" becomes something to enjoy by the well off who shop in expensive stores that the majority of the population are barred from. As the economy tanks harder due to Covid-19 the problem is only becoming worse.

    • @timwright4695

      Word. All it's gotten is worse in this past year. Cannot afford to eat at all, let alone with any thought of doing it healthily. G******n rent went up 100 bux a month. What else do I give up to cover it? Driving? Internet service? Medications? Phone? Not much else left. So, do I live in the dark or jump off a bridge? Tough choice all right.

    I am a Woman whom lives for laughter, it is the Soulace to my Soul. Meagan and Craig are an immensely exciting and powerful Couple together. I appreciate their work together to find out the answers to many problems we are experiencing.
    Go Kimble, I am a Mother that has children the same age of the Elon’s. They are amazing, and I am as Proud of them as I thought a Parent could be. Then I watched the Musk’s. Wow, and I fed my kids fresh fruits and vegetables, but.............they have not designed a Musk thought and proceeded. Now what do you do????????
    Feed their bodies, brains and Soul.

    True True True
    Our innercity school has a garden and the kids are fascinated. They visit the tiny seeds or plants over and over. They take home vegetables like prizes. When there are uneven numbers of vegetables there are drawing or awards for extras.
    It's amazing. They will eat stuff that they grew eagerly when they won't touch it otherwise.

    What a wonderful and refreshing show. The only thing I would disagree with is the statement about still needing to eat meat, but better quality meat. Yes, eat better quality meat while you wean yourself off it completely. There is no need for meat. You can get all the nutrients you need (yes, including protein) from plant-based foods.

    Something else to note about meat - if you buy standard meat from corn fed cows, you barely get any omega 3 fat, with way too much omega 6 fat. Omega 3 is what you actually want. You have to find 'grass fed and finished' meat to get the higher omega 3 content. If you are into lifting weights and trying to get healthier, that is a huge thing. It costs more and is hard to find grass finished meat, but it's worth it, if your health means anything to you. The hardest thing to do today is get enough omega 3 fats, while dropping down on omega 6.

    "Vegetables are saving the planet, but the plastic they come in is not." YOU PUT THEM IN THOSE BAGS! Bring your own bags! These things are covered in dirt anyway (and handled by people with dirty hands) - you don't need to worry about just throwing them into your bag with your other groceries. It only feels weird because no one does it that way.

    • @_tw_ice
      @_tw_ice 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Totally. They make a programme about sustainability, but can`t even cope with the basic stuff as briging your own bags to the groceries.

    • @lobitome
      @lobitome 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Perhaps the gag of ripping the bags open was what they or he was going for. But you can talk about how bad plastic bags are without actually using them for your produce.

    I like the idea, I really, do, but as Mr. Musk mentioned, “Affordability.” I live in rural southern New Hampshire. I do have a garden on our property (No Kale). Still have to go to the grocery store. “Good,” food is expensive and most of the time “Organic” does not mean much of anything (except more expensive), it is usually just a label. Until it is much less expensive it comes off as pretentious.

    • @steph1518
      @steph1518 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Things like apples, potatoes, carrots are "good" food, and usually very affordable. The point is that people should buy "real" food and avoid processed food with artificial ingredients, not that they should buy the most expensive produce (like kale for example... there are cheaper options that are just as good for you, kale is just "trendy" now). If organic is too expensive, try looking for seasonal, locally grown produce, that's also a good start to make things better.

    I've really been missing Craig's late night show. I've been watching old clips on the Tube. I finally found this and am really enjoying it.
    No idea if the Ferg's actually read the comments, but just FYI, most refrigerators now have reversible doors so you can open them in the direction that seems most pertinent.

    This was fantastic, and well done! This is the kind of thing I can see CraigyFerg doing regularly...something that stretches his brain, and ours too! :)

    I'm so excited to find this today! Admittedly it's helping to remind me of the things I tried harder to do when I was younger and have fallen slowly away from.
    It doesn't hurt when Craig, his hot wife and his adorable accented rogue tell me to do it...

    If we put as much money, science and effort into feeding the world as we do at trying to own it and profit from it, the human race might have a chance at survival.

      @ Neil Birchall -- if every farmer in the world switched to organic, one third of the planet would starve to death. would you like to decide which 2.5 billion that would be??

      @Kevin, a:) when did i say organic food production ? b:) where are you pulling that figure from?

    • @kevinlacoursiere684
      @kevinlacoursiere684 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ Neil -- I pulled that figure from a great little documentary series by the name of "Penn & Teller's Bullshit". the original mythbusters

      Oh you mean the episode that used data from the heavily biased Hudson Institute? You shouldn't believe everything you see on TV (or youtube either)
