- Episode Three of Couple Thinkers continues the theme of asking really big questions. In this case: Can we stop aging? We’re not talking anti-aging creams, Botox and Pilates. We’re asking if the process itself can be stopped. To find out, Craig and Megan visit the lab of Daisy Robinton. She’s been researching how genetically tweaking our DNA can affect the aging process. And guess what - she thinks the first person who will live to 200 may already be alive.

I really enjoy the "couple thinking" premise and the show's Hosts present an ideal platform for each episode. For Craig, surely, this represents the further "deconstruction" of the talk show structure and it's a beautiful result. There is an ease and a depth in which Megan and Craig interact. There is also a level of respect that gives credibility to the hosts and to the content matter. I further enjoy the curiosity and the intellectual challenge the hosts seem to embrace. Having little knowledge of Megan -- but having enjoyed years of watching Craig perform and express himself -- I find myself overjoyed to see these two interact. The fact that they challenge each other intellectually is enticing. Within each episode I feel myself being drawn into a safe place for such discussions. This is a pleasant, thought-provoking half-hour -- magnificently done. More, please.
These two have infinite charm. This show deserved to be put out on TV and subtitled for foreign markets. I'm sure this has worldwide appeal. We need more curiosity about the world we live in and less about celebrities. Such a simple and well-worn statement, yet nothing changes.

Watching these episodes I'm getting a better idea of the dynamics of a very healthy relationship. Craig and Megan share something very magical. It is a beautiful thing, and the world needs more of it.

I'm loving these videos...they really make you think, and that's something I always enjoyed about Craig. On his late night show, there were moments of "edutainment", which kept everything interesting.

Surprised she didn't talk about CRISPR.
isabel rojas she talked about it in her TEDx talk. The CRISPR cas-9 genome thats found in the bacteria thats used to make yogurts(sorry retarded so i cant remember the name) to defend themself againts viruses. I think the ones shes talking about in this video is another different thing since thers a multiple research about curimg aging with many different ways possible.
CRISPR is just a tool. When she was talking about breeding genetically modified species, that is done using CRISPR.

She did, though, around 18:35. She just didn't refer to it by name. What she was talking about with re-editing the genes of some animal, that's CRIPSR.

I love you the Ferguson’s. I can’t believe I only watched Craig on the late show on TH-cam a year ago. I used to make fun of my daughters, Marina age 15, and Liliana age 17I just subscribed to this channel and I got choked up a bit because I was 18 when he passed away at 46. As I write this comment at 58. I have already passed him up by 12 years. I hope to meet you both in person someday! Keep up the great content. We definitely want our parents to live longer.

Absolutely love this show. I hope there's a second season, going to run out of episodes, and I only discovered it tonight! Such a great topic, I believe, if science can accomplish it, why not? That being said, I also think, before humanity could use the science, especially _this_ type of science, "responsibly", society would need to change on a fundamental level. That is, it would require us to completely change the way we view ourselves, each other, the world, and how we relate to it, a global paradigm shift, if you will. Of course, that won't happen before we've all but destroyed ourselves and our world, one can hope though. So the system we live in now, will only corrupt it, science isn't good or bad, it just is, the "bad" only happens in its application, and so far, we don't have a great track record. Just my humble 2 cents worth.
Very interesting and I am really enjoying the relationship aspect that Ferguson's are sharing. Their conversations remind me of the wonderful time spent with my husband and how close they bring us. Thank you for sharing.
As much as I have enjoyed your late,late tv show, what you and Megan are doing with your new show speaks directly to my mind! Some people must hate life, I would jump at the opportunity to extend mine. I've had ups and downs, more downs than ups, but the fact is, is we're here once and once only. I would love to live to 200!
If one had the money....
keep dreaming .. no one want to live in world full of problems war deseases even nature is kind of scary on how animals kill each other to survive . even if they could make you younger it still doesnt stop you from diying in accident, deadly desease , war ....
There is the problem of limited resources. People need to die out so new people can live.
We already have an energy and food sustainability problem, imagine if the world's population suddenly doubled because everyone lived to 200, especially if even though people lived that long they still got too old to continue as active members of society and so could not physically work for most of their life span. Or of course if ultimately people stopped dying altogether, population would rise uncontrollably unless some kind of mass sterilization was carried out.
Of course this is all very philosophical but not a practical concern for the near future because these technologies are highly experimental, they are only used for research or in the treatment of specific diseases and that will be the case for a long time, and when eventually you can just walk into a clinic and ask to be bioengineered in a Captain America sort of way that will be extremely expensive and only available to a minority.

Good to have the ethical questions along with the breakthrough innovations too.
I understand the need for knowledge and perhaps using this specific kind of science to possible eliminate disease. But there were a group of people, about 70 years ago that had a similar idea to this and we all know how that went. We have to tread very lightly and with great thought and consideration move forward.

Awesome chapter (as the others too :) ). About what Craig was saying about what's an issue or what makes you what you are, that's a very good point. If Salvador Dalí, or David Bowie, or Freddy Mercury were born now, would their creativity were conceived as a handicap or an "issue" to make them "normal"? If we lose all craziness, lateral thinking, creativity, we will all became the same thing, and the music, the literature, the paint, the movies, everything done by radically different people, will be lost forever.

This is great, and as usual Craig and Megan have a great conversation and raise interesting issues, but I wish they'd talked to more people on this one, or if the idea is always to have just one guest then a different person. While I have a huge amount of respect for Robinton's work, I don't think she was especially eloquent or good at explaining the science. Aubrey deGrey's the real expert on aging, and he's a great figure to talk to.

One of the things I really worry about with technology like what is described in this episode is does this create a gap between the 'haves' and the 'have-nots' that becomes so endemic that we really do turn into 'homo sapiens' and 'homo superior'? As a species we have shown that one part of our population that has a big advantage has ALWAYS used that advantage to the detriment of the other part. Always. So how do we avoid that in this case when the advantage isn't going to be a higher tech base, or greater access to a particular resource that can be overcome, but a fundamental advantage in average intelligence, greater health/lower health-care costs, better athleticism, and a significantly longer life-span allowing for greater accumulation of resources/money? Is it even possible? I mean let's face it. I have access to pretty significant wealth, thus if this becomes available for my children (or even myself, but at nearly 50 years of age I'm probably on the 'wrong side' of the line to take advantage) I'll pay for it and so will all of my siblings. So in a microcosm you have one extended family that over a few generations gets this advantage when, assuming it is a very expensive process for the first few generations, the vast majority of people don't. Is that 'right' or 'fair', or even acceptable? I don't know.

Eating healthy as one way to extend our lives is not only manageable by the wealthy. It depends on each individual. A while ago I was discussing with a friend and arrived to this truthful conclusion. People complain that buying organic food is too expensive and consequently unaffordable and unattainable. Nevertheless, if each person thinks that we are replenishing the food that we as human organisms are utilizing then shouldn't we invest in food that cells in each organ as part of the whole organism requires for the best possible function. We are energy, molecules, cells that in conjunction make up the organism that works 8 hours for us the individual---I think we can all try to afford better quality of food and better eating habits. I am really enjoying their conversation. I think that this type of conversation should be the type that is talked between students, friends, colleagues, spouses, relatives because it is positive, energizing, and great for our brain cells. Keep up the episodes Craig Ferguson...why can't people make this type of series popular instead of reality tv shows that only entice drama and inconsequential subjects.

It's interesting to me that people always ask, do you want to live forever as if it's forever or dead at 80. Like once we had the choice to live forever or not we would still have this pathetic, selfish law against suicide. If you don't have the freedom to end a life that only you know everything about but still wish to end it, you don't have freedom at all. It's the living that are afraid of missing the person that is selfish imo.
Once you get past that stupid question then it becomes, do you want to live as long as possible until you are ready to meander off this mortal coil.
GCarlin Disciple I think the laws would have to change if you could live forever. I can understand why there would be laws against killing yourself since your going to die anyway, like why not just ride it out and see what happens.
the law can not really stop you from doing it it is just that this would make other people going through the same tough life to think that it is okay to give up your own life.

One thing is for sure, life is a spectrum which means there will be those that choose to live forever and those that choose to die. Neither is more natural or less natural, it's all evolution and whomever survives the longest, wins. In fact, we want the spectrum of humanity to grow to ensure that something of us survives in any form. Also, "society" can't have a discussion because society is purely an emergent property of a community's actions. It's an afterthought, a definition of what our community looked like when we looked at it. It could be entirely different tomorrow. The fact that all of this is scary and out of your control doesn't mean it shouldn't happen. You still have the right to refuse and live your own life. The moment someone tries to force longevity on you, that's when moral arguments matter. Just as you might not want to live that long, I might and it's my right to pursue that.

You can find credits for the song "Always Talk To Me" by Kit & Kenny all over the Internet, but you can't find the actual track anymore. The song even used to be on Spotify, but it's now greyed out... which means that the song owner (Universal or Kit & Kenny) has removed it, for legal reasons. I'm wondering if GANT bought the song exclusively for use in the show, which would mean that we can't hear it now as a standalone song, unless GANT releases a soundtrack for Couple Thinkers. It's a shame, because it's a great song.

You can slow the aging process if you change the way you think about it. Most people have the misconception that when you hit a certain age your overall physical health automatically declines. That's just not true.

We have been increasing our lifespan for centuries now with medical technology.
GATTACA. Then again, a good friend had an accident, was told he would NEVER walk again. Went to France, got stem cell treatment, he is walking now. A miracle, depending on how you see it.
Isn't the biggest issue connected to an ever extending lifespan of the masses, the consequence of overpopulation?
This is the most interesting challenge of biological immortality; the other ones asking why would anybody want to live forever seem absurd to me. One feature of rich and educated societies is that their birth rates swiftly fall below the replacement rate. The US's would be well below it right now if not for immigrants. Same for France, UK, Japan, etc. It would be like an exponential curve except in reverse, which I believe is called a decay. Eventually, there would be just two fertile people left in the world, and then there would be just one. Or, if not, there's always the possibility of colonization offworld.
I think that’s why space exploration is so important, we can colonize other planets so that overpopulation isn’t an issue. It’s a very scary topic though and I see a lot of issues that will arise from the scientific advancements we’re making if we don’t first fix ourselves.
It is becoming obvious to me that Craig Ferguson is almost certainly a fan of JRE. And is also likely a student of all of the useful information of TH-cam. He knows a lot about a variety of topics. This is evident in his little comments here and there.

I believe we will find ways to prevent aging but immortality, now that is something can be argued and discussed a thousand different ways. Id love to live 200-300 years. It wouldnt change the fabric of morals because you could still die with fatal injuries.
