Ginastera is an amazing Argentinian composer and Emerson actually played a couple of his beautiful piano pieces in an ELP concert. Apparently he was terrified at the prospect of meeting the composer but Ginastera was really complimentary. Palmer's drumming is awesome here.
This piece of music perfectly illustrates ELP's penchant for taking a "classical" composition, and restructuring it to their own purposes. Keith, Greg and Carl are all stellar musicians, and this particular performance makes you sit right up and pay attention to every note. Witnessed one live concert by the band, and this recording comes very close to what I experienced.
Saw ELP live twice (once with Jethro Tull and once with Deep Purple and Dream Theater) and they were amazing to see and hear as were Tull, Purple and Dream Theater.
There is a video of this on youtube if you all wish to view it yourselves. Impeccable musicianship as always. You will want to check out a group called Renaissance. Enjoy
Very unusual and It does show the talent though. Excellent album WAY Way ahead of their time. I did see them live and they were great. Carl Palmer is a MONSTER on the drums remember ladies ?
For a band that didn't put out a lot of music, they hit real hard with what they had. Those first six albums are full of some of the most remarkable music you'll ever hear. I'm not sure how much of ELP you've listened to, but one of their greatest pieces of music is Tarkus on the album Tarkus. It's about 20 minutes of pure Emerson ecstasy (RIP). In my book, one of the top five all-time progressive songs.
If you like their live stuff, then their live version of “ Pirates” in Canadian concert with the entire orchestra is fantastic. It showcases how simply genius they were.
As a major league fan of ELP since the beginning, you can take it from me: You've definitely gone down the right rabbit hole. ELP were amazing. Trivia: Carl Palmer was the fist drummer to use the synthesized drums you heard. Next, I suggest the song "Tank" from their self-named first album. It's my personal favorite because in 1971, it was the first time I'd ever heard the Moog Synthesizer used that broadly. 🎹🎸&🥁
Emerson, Lake And Palmer | Toccate You just heard the 1st ever recorded electric drum solo. The live version from the Jam is a cut & paste job of both audio and video. There is no other video that I know of. Just audio. Did you watch the video i sent of Carl Palmer talking about his new steel drum kit? It explains a lot. Toccata is actually a type of music. Wikipedia ---> (Toccata (from Italian toccare, literally, "to touch", with "toccata" being the action of touching) is a virtuoso piece of music typically for a keyboard or plucked string instrument featuring fast-moving, lightly fingered or otherwise virtuosic passages or sections, with or without imitative or fugal interludes, generally emphasizing the dexterity of the performer's fingers.)
Toccata is one of the wildest pieces of music by a major band - and they absolutely were a major band. Try Pictures at an Exhibition next, a great example of their ability to adapt a classical piece (like Toccata) and make it their own. It's long - by YT standards - but worth it!
OK, the first time I got really drunk as a teenager and slept on the floor and my friends house. At 4 am while it was still dark and all the lights were off, he played this and cranked it up. It scared and bejeezes outta me and freaked me out. I thought I woke up in a horror movie. This band was in the day in the beginning of synthesizers. Keith Emerson had a keyboard with a huge box with hundreds of wire running our of it and lights flashing on it with guys running around plugging and unplugging wires. It was amazing to see them live. Carl Palmer had a drumset as big as Texas, with Tympani, Gongs, Bells and about 20 drums and 20 cymbals. And he used them all.
Ever since ive become your subscriber i like how you concentrate and listen closely and pick out details about the band members too thats what makes you three beautiful ladies your channel so special to your subscribers and continue your TH-cam channel success you are all awesome. I assume you know the background here...Adaptation of a classical piece. Keith got the composer's stamp of approval. That composer said that Keith Emerson "beautifully captured the mood of my piece."
This song is a "Re-imagined" adaptation of a classical piece called "Toccata Concertata" by the Argentine composer Alberto Ginastera . ELP did this with several pieces by classical composers . A Great & fairly short song they did this with that would be good to react to would be "Hoedown" , a piece composed by Aaron Copeland 🙂
Hi from California Ya gatta see them live!!!1997 Tarkus from Montreux Jazz Festival. Or from same concert Medley Part 2!! He plays the organ on top of him them plays on top of of keyboards 💥💥💥🔥🔥🔥 from Behind Amazing ❤️✌🏼
You have to listen to 'C'est la vie' from their 1977 triple album 'Works Volime 1'. It has to be one of the most beautiful songs ever. Guaranteed your'e gonna cry ..😢😢😢.
Not one of my favorites -but still better than any music today. Oh-There is a video where Keith and his piano goes into the air and spins around-Have a great day.
The truth is, if you are a fan of 3-4 min singer led pop hits, like Britney Spears, etc., early ELP will be as alien to you as 15th century Gregorian chant. Other than Lake's ballads, or "fun" pieces like Benny the Bouncer, ELP plays what is basically new wave classical music, not rock. in that regard, they were probably one of the more unique groups ever.

A bit too 'deconstructed' for my liking, you should check out the version by the band SKY, Toccata and Fugue in D Minor. Much more in the rock/pop mould and a UK chart hit back in the day.
MOLTO interessante!!!!!!!
A very experimental song at the very start of the psychedelic movement Looking back it doesn't quite sound right disjointed to my mind best describes this song now At the time though it was a unknown territory and style of music and such was of interest
Also Carl Palmer is 74 now and is currently touring back on the East Coast Amazing drumming still
Saw him recently in the UK. Sat in the front row of a tiny venue and was blown away. He's still got it.
@@donaldanderson6604 wow!!! I’m in California. Don’t think he is coming west …what venue did he play?
RIP Keith Emerson & Greg Lake
ELP was my first concert, in a New Jersey arena. It took 35 years to again see Carl Palmer, in a small club in North Carolina.
If I was told that I could choose one….only one song/piece of music to listen to for the rest of my life….this is it!
Ginastera is an amazing Argentinian composer and Emerson actually played a couple of his beautiful piano pieces in an ELP concert. Apparently he was terrified at the prospect of meeting the composer but Ginastera was really complimentary. Palmer's drumming is awesome here.
The Most underrated 3 piece band of all time….
ELP were hardly underrated!

Me too. I got to see them in a double bill with Jethro Tull! What a life-altering event!
This sounds like it was in a Movie, or should have been.
Those Drums were Awesome !!

They did the same with Copeland and Fanfare for the Common Man.
@@wallacecallow2255 Yes. And the gals reviewed that one a couple of months ago.

after all the massive synth and keyboard sounds, try 'Keith Emerson Piano Improvisation Cal Jam 74', and just see what he can do purely with a piano!
Thank you
@@KathyLuluandDonna ('Keith Emerson Piano Improvisation Cal Jam 74',) yes this is a great suggestion. 9 minutes for all of it ...
They were certainly very different.

GOOD FOR YOU this was torture when I first heard at age 15 but I eventually got it! So glad that you're are least.......trying! No Pain No Gain
Recommendation: ELP Memoirs of an officer and a gentleman is ELP is them at their most refined.

Big fan of EL&P and own the album this song came from, however this song sucks. You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig
