Yes, they DID perform it live in its entirety. Check out the magnificent live album "Welcome Back My Friends To the Show That Never Ends... ...Ladies and Gentlemen, Emerson, Lake and Palmer!" (Snappy title, huh?)
It was a triple album when it was first released on vinyl. If I could only own one ELP album, it would probably be this one. Many of the live takes are superior to the studio cuts in my opinion while the "Piano Improvisations" section is unique to this album.
I loved watching your reactions to hearing this for the first time! It's really too much to take in all of it in a first listen. I reckon you need to hear it at least ten times before you really appreciate how marvellous it is.
But definitely check out the live version too!

I don't like it when people think that listening to prog rock your head should explode. All prog metal bands have grown up with this opinion, and the more endless shredding, the better they think. This is not true. Don't get me wrong, I love Karn Evil 9, but it's not the prog rock at it's best imo. And for example Tony Banks, Rick Wakeman wrote better than Keith Emerson. Technique will never value more than composing

I had a neighbor, Mr. Kemp, when I was a teen. I played drums then, and one day he he heard me blaring Tarkus. He was a bit of an orchestral/classical freak, probably approaching 70 years old at that point (this was 1983...)
He HAD TO KNOW what I was just playing on my stereo, when I answered my door.
Weeks later ? HE'S BLARING TARKUS, enough that I hear it from my house across the street.
He loved the title track, Bitches Crystal & A Time and a Place.....
I think the classical elements of ELP caught his ear immediately. And to be applied to a three piece band ? All the better !!
This is why I love The Nice, too. (Never liked The Nice as much with Davy O'List- they seemed more amateurish with him, leaning too heavily on psychedelia, IMO, to cover up short comings....like O'List.
Once without him ? Oh, yeah. Blinky Davison was great, great. Lee Jackson ? Yeah, potentially another weakness, but without him ? A key element to their overall sound is lost, too, without Lee Jackson. But I object to the O'List era of The Nice.
Dunno why, it just is for me....😇

It's a piece of genius played by master musicians at their peak. Even if you don't get into the scifi dystopian story the music is amazing. How does Emerson play that fast? You can understand why punk rockers found this music daunting, they couldn't possibly compete with their 3 chord ability. I'd say this is ELP's best album although my favorite song of theirs is 'Pirates'. Hopefully you'll react to that epic at some point.
There's a girl named Rachel Flowers who plays this song on organ and she's blind, very impressive. She has several You Tube videos.

    • @jimhardiman3836
      @jimhardiman3836 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

You want to talk about aggression and rebellion? ELP were far more punk than the punk rock posers. They were the real deal. It was necessary for the punkers to delegitimize progressive rock (along with help from the mainstream media) and to set the musical bar extremely low in order to legitimize their own remedial musical skills. Shame there wasn’t room for both styles but sadly progressive rock had to go. It was too musically threatening to the posers, label executives and radio programmers.

    • @jimhardiman3836
      @jimhardiman3836 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@williamhinshaw6838 wrong. It's actually the opposite. Punk and the mainstream media (including MTV) brought on the dumbing down of music audience. ELP were very successful in the 70s and their audience wasn't just musicians. Jethro Tull Thick As A Brick and Passion Play were were Billboard #1 albums. Birds Of Fire was a top 10 album.

I clearly remember the day I bought this album. It was early 1974, I was a junior in high school and since we had a full hour for lunch a friend and I drove to the local Caldor store in his El Camino and I bought the album. Of course, I had to wait until I got home before I could listen to it. Back then, in the NYC area we had radio stations that would play extended tracks as well as deep album tracks (the DJs programmed their own shows, imagine that) so I had heard many of the tracks but never the full album. When I got home from school I put it on the turn table and played it and it blew me away. It was not for everyone but it certainly did its job on me.

Hay JP - Saw (experienced) the ELP Karn Evil 9 tour Feb.17, 1974 at the S.F. Civic Aud. "Come and see the show"...A live show about a "show" we came to see. What goes unrecognized is that the concert was in true QUADRAPHONIC sound. In addition to the usual (front) left/right speakers on each side of the stage, there were also 2 huge sets of speakers in the rear corners of the auditorium. That electronic pulsing sound you hear at the end of the album with headphones, going from side to side in your head, was going 'around the room' at this live show. It kept going...around and around...louder and louder...faster and faster...until it sounded like you're standing under a rotating helicopter blade...which also closed the show. Twas an LSD experience I will never forget!

You ask, "What did WE think when we first heard this?"
For me, I was blown away. I certainly didn't absorb everything that was going on but I did know immediately that this was a piece (and an album) that I was going to study carefully. Between ELP and Genesis, I found just about everything that I aspired to as a keyboard player and I spent countless hours figuring out how to play magnificent pieces of music like Karn Evil 9.
Back in the days of vinyl, I had a relatively rare record player (it was actually a radiogram!) which had four different speed settings. It had the usual 78, 45 and 33 and a third rpm but it also had the obsolete 16 and seven eighths setting. Since 16 7/8 is almost exactly *half* of 33 1/3, I could play normal LPs at near enough half speed so I was able to figure out some of the parts that were just too fast for me to transcribe accurately at that time. Playing it at half speed also means that it stays in the same key; it's just an octave lower.
I not only learned so much from Keith Emerson, I was also inspired by his brilliance and musical ambition. I still am.
    RIP Keith.

I don’t get to deep in analyzing. Just love the depth of their talent and unique approach. If you see this live it’s very impressive, because they perform it. Early on the whole thing. Later many times just 1 & 2. If you just listen you get lost in it all. I need to get lost sometimes. Critics are too pompous to appreciate these guys. Maybe the critics don’t like having someone who has talent like this when they themselves have none. So they are critical just to have something to say. The more you listen to it you will appreciate it even more.

There is a song called Brain Salad Surgery and for some inexplicable reason they chose to release it as a flexi single with I think the Melody Maker then it would later show up on Works Volume 2. I love the song but be careful Emerson plays a downpitched note that if loud enough could damage your speakers. It’s far superior to Benny and they should have switched them.

I was familiar with the album since they played it all the time and even took it upon myself to listen to it alone. As far as life performance from what I recall everything was spot on, the loudest band I've ever heard! Their crew was top notch also using a quadrifonic sound system what you heard at the end that synthesizer parts swirling around you got the same thing live even better. It was amazing! There were speakers in the front to the side and to the rear all the way around never heard anything like that before and ever since. People think this is still mind-blowing in 2020 just imagine back in 1973 to put it in perspective. You are one of the few reviewers that could ever sit and listen to the whole thing! Justin, I really love your videos. You're very articulate and you put your thoughts over exceedingly well. As to ELP, I first saw them on November 14, 1973 at the Miami Jai Alai Fronton. This literally was the first show of the "Brain Salad Surgery" tour. They played the entire album from "Jerusalem" to "The Third Impression" in sequence. It WAS mind-blowing. The song that did it for me was "The Third Impression." That-to me-was literally a Space Opera, a story about man against technology, and it had me imagining Star Wars like dogfights years before the first movie came out. It's something I've always wanted to turn into a film, but to do it right with all the requisite CGI would be costly. At this point I'm content to run that little movie in my head every time I hear the song. And that is the great thing about all of ELP's music. They were soundtracks for the movies in my mind.

I had the pleasure of going to see ELP perform this live on consecutive nights, the 31st of April and the 1st May, 1974, at the Liverpool Empire theatre. Me and my mate bought tickets for the last night if the band we were seeing were performing over a couple of nights in the belief that they would want to leave their fans a lasting memory of their best performance. The first night the band would be getting the feel of the gig. Second night, they would be into their stride, and the third night on top of their game. (That was our excuse anyway!:))

Hi JP. I want to thank you for the generous assessment of this suite. This piece was a culmination of all of the groups talents, melded into possibly their most comprehensive composition. As far as the steel drum sound ; this was achieved by placing pickups within the drums, and using the ring modulator of the moog 3C synthesizer to emulate each tone. This gave us the dissonance that we would recognize as steel drums. So in essence it was a collaboration between Emerson and Palmer. Happy to share this with you. I once knew my dear late friend Keith as I worked with him and Robert Moog at Moog music when it was in its infancy. Thanks again for your review.

As I teenager in England when I first heard this in the 70s, my reaction was remarkably similar to yours. It was simply so different to anything I'd heard before in the ingenuity, dexterity and the relentless energy in it. Someone on this thread called it the Beethoven's Fifth of prog. I agree. You say it takes more than a first listen. It does, and like any truly clever music with real depth you see more in it the more often you listen to it. 45 plus years on I can listen to it and am never bored by hearing it. Lyrically the First is a hymn to humanity's fascination with the grotesque. When I saw the first Terminator movie which came a decade later my instant reaction was that they lifted the idea for it from the narrative of the Third.

Some incredible guitar layers from Lake which are usually understated in most of their music.

With every listen it grew and grew and grew and got louder and louder and louder. Til you remembered what exactly was coming next and looked forward to every nuance of it. It still has the same effect to this day. I get thrilled by discovering the ever so slightest thing in this music. I particularly love watching the practice sessions of some of this on TH-cam. It’s so heart warming to see them working together, smiling, poking fun at each other.

Loved it ever since and the surround mix on the 2000 Rhino DVD-A is brilliant (piece of advice: avoid all other surround mixes as this one is far and away better than all the others). Carl's stainless steel drum kit from the Works tour is now owned by Ringo Starr! He was planning to give it to his son Zack.

He justified that kit growth through those years. He was a very musical drummer, employing melodies into the rhythms. That different types of toms, of varying sizes, cowbell, vibraphone, chimes, ect., made perfect sense for a drummer being THAT musical....
Gongs ? Always over the top, IMO. Or Bruford or Jamie Muir's "thundersheet"....essentially a big slab of thin metal that has a crashing "boinggg" sound to it, from the metal flexing when struck with a good amount of force.
Ah, the indulgences that came from the early 70's rock music scene....😎

I first heard this on the radio. I was completely blown away and got the album very shortly afterward. The next step was to see them live. Some music just never gets old to me. Nice H to He wrap yesterday too. Keep up the good work Justin!

I am very interested if Justin starts to feel the need to listen to this again and what his impressions are after a few listens. That would be so cool.

JP I saw them perform brain salad surgery tour at Madison Square, Garden, December 18, 1973 I was 19 years old now I’m 66 and these guys never cease to amaze me what I love what you do JP is introducing for re-introducing progressive rock to a lot of young people out there and I love your reactions because in high school and college we would sit around with a couple of beers and some well smoke some stuff you get the drift and everybody would say this album was one of the best I’ve ever heard as far as progressive rock I mean don’t get me wrong you have yes rush Pink Floyd Jethro Tull and then the bothers me the most these idiots in Cleveland meaning the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame that these guys are not in it what is wrong those dumbbells well anyway stay safe God bless you have a happy new year because I’m listening to this I’m by myself New Year’s Eve not complaining about anything just watching the joy in your face of listening to this masterpiece and to think all of the other bands got it before them some deserved some didn’t deserve to be there but that’s up to them politics as usual I mean Frank Zappa one said he wanted to play with Keith Emerson He’s in the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame

I don't remember the exact date, but I was there too for the Brain Salad Surgery tour, age 18! In those days, I practically "lived" at the Garden, lol. Tried to never miss a show. ELP blew the walls off MSG. I also remember the concert with the floating piano, I believe? They were so good, musically, though, that the extra show biz gimmicks were just eye candy for those who found that entertaining. Me...I just loved the music, straight and simple. Weren't we the lucky ones!

Interesting fact is ELP bought an old theater back in the day. They actually played Karn evil 9 live in that theater before they recorded it so they knew they could play it live when they went out on the road.

I was lucky enough to have watched them live several times. You should watch the live versions to see Carl play, he's amazing. The live concerts were Quadraphonic with huge stacks of speakers in 4 corners of the Long Beach Arena. Those synth riffs would jump from left to right to back left and back right it was truly amazing live. I had a friend who worked security so he walked me right up to sit at the steps that led to the stage.

Watched the whole video. Thank you. Your honesty sells me. And yes, after decades of listening to this, I feel I get more out of this music now than I did back then. Even though I loved it back then as well,
with all the talk of the exponential rise of artificial intelligence to come, this becomes more valid every day as our future many years from now will make this lifetime look like the Stone Age or/and the best of times.

The first time I heard this song was several months before the album was released live in concert. At the end of the Third Impression Keith's synth explodes after that tone circled around the stadium several times. They were the first show I ever saw that used four channel sound in concert. The spacial effects added a lot to the experience.

I first heard this on a Marantz stereo 4 speaker on a Marantz turntable in 1976 a friend of mind had. listing in his bedroom What can I say? way cool! You have to have 1500 yrs of British history to get that sound.

Yeah, this suite definitely "blows your head apart," as the lyric says. It's really tough to summarize one's feelings after a first listen, so I congratulate you, Justin.
My favorite Impression is the First. Greg _kills_ it vocally all the way through, and it doesn't get any better than when he half-shouts "Welcome back, my friends, to the show that never ends!" and belts out the last "See the show!" line.
As you speculated, _yes,_ they played the entire Karn Evil 9 piece live, multiple times, for years. You can hear complete performances on live albums, including the _Welcome Back, My Friends..._ live album.
This album was different than the ones that preceded it in that ELP rehearsed the whole thing over and over before recording it to ensure they could play it live with just the three of them. Carl Palmer and Greg Lake said that recording _Brain Salad Surgery_ was really easy because they knew the material backward and forward, so it was like recording a concert in the studio.
You are so correct about Keith Emerson. While all three members of ELP were virtuosos (Carl on the drum kit and Greg at the mic, bass, and producer's desk), Keith Emerson is probably the best keyboard player of all time. Heck, a _Prog_ magazine readers' poll voted him #1 over Rick Wakeman (Yes), Tony Banks (Genesis), and Richard Wright (Pink Floyd). May he rest in peace.
Lastly, a Fun Fact: The voice of the Computer in the Third Impression is provided by Keith Emerson. It is his only vocal contribution to any of the music he ever made.
