The actual dialogue and plot of this event are so interesting but let's also talk about the fact that Kanade's clothes in the card image look significantly nicer than what she usually wears. It's just one of those little things that adds so much: she's trying so hard to convince Mafumom that Mafuyu can be around N25 -- that they're not going to be a negative influence on her -- so she dresses up despite being a recluse in the hopes of changing Mafumom's mind
I don’t think she’s lying. I think she genuinely has no clue that Mafuyu is so depressed. She doesn’t even have a before and after comparison with who she was when she was actually happy, vs how she is when she’s just masking. I’m so curious how she’ll react when she learns the truth. That her child has been masking her entire life, all cuz of her. Will she be in denial then? Or maybe she already knows and is already deep in denial…
You know how Emu freaks out whenever she sees Mafuyu’s happy facade? I genuinely want to know how she’d react to Mrs. Asahina’s sickeningly sweet, condescending smile. Would Emu be just as scared, or would she actually get angry seeing a smile weaponized?
I feel like at first she'd be even more scared than with Mafuyu, but then come to the realization that this woman is the reason Mafuyu fake smiles so often and would get mad at that point

Mrs. Asahina is basically Mafuyu's worst case scenario. Mafuyu puts on a facade in the hopes of making those around her happy and helping them. Her mother does it to manipulate and take advantage of people.
Her dad's in coma at the hospital, right? He can't speak? Do you know what exactly lead to his depression/coma other than Kanade's "song"? (which I don't believe was that reason). I still haven't read all chapters so I may be lacking some info on the story. But yeah, it's tough for Kanade to live alone at home and often neglect her health.
i like how people can write how manipulative mafuyu mom is. She uses words carefully and the warm, sweet voice to manipulate mafuyu, especially with the sentences: "i want what good for you" and "im your parent".feels
The difference between Kanade's reason and Mrs. Asahina's reason as to not letting mafuyu know is wildly different. Kanade doesn't let her know as to not worry her while Mrs. Asahina does it to prevent interfering with Mafuyu's studies. It really shows what they value more

The way mafuyu's mother speaks makes me think that she actually believes what she does is right, so perhaps she herself was treated the same way by her parents. Mayhaps generational trauma opening...

I think you're sort of onto something there! Personally, I agree with you in regards to Mafuyu's mom believing she's right, but not in the "this is what i was taught and what is supposed to make everyone happy" way but more in the "i need to invest in Mafuyu's future because that will have the most beneficial outcome". Mafuyu's mother doesn't see her as a person, an individual, but as an asset. Not just a trophy to show off, but something to invest in that will generate profit and social status. Re: the generational trauma, i think Niigo's story as a whole can also be viewed as an attempt to bring the detrimental flaws of Japan's "work till you literally die" culture to light and criticize it from the perspective of the people that suffer under it the most: future workers, aka children. I believe that besides being literally the scum of the Earth, Mafuyu's mother can also stand for the system as a whole to try and make the whole concept less abstract. Mafuyu's mom's generational trauma in this case would then just be the accumulation of decades of these torturous working conditions condensed into a single character, which conveniently brings me back to my headcanon that she represents a much larger thing.
The way she’s written, it’s genuinely difficult to tell. A lot of her dialogues with Mafuyu are incredibly manipulative and the words are so cherry-picked that it’s difficult to think of it as anything other than deliberate. At the same time, when she has dialogue with non-Mafuyu characters it’s like she’s convincing them (and the audience by proxy) that she really does want only the best for Mafuyu. It’s difficult to tell whether she’s convincing us or she genuinely thinks she’s in the right at that point.

As much as I’m not used to commenting on videos, this WHOLE clip of Kanade confronting Mafuyu's Mother is SO SHOWING of her character. Even when saying goodbye to each other, she says: "Let's keep it a secret between us that we met today, we shouldn't let Mafuyu know." Which, her reasoning for that is "Interfere with Mafuyu's studies" once again, while Kanade's is "I don't want to worry her more than enough." That is a nice detail, but also such a fucked up one. Another one is how she manipulates niigo members (not just her daughter). With Kanade, for her it's really tough to be interacting with Mafuyu's Mother since her own passed away long time ago, and yet she can tell that it's different. And her saying of: " you should think carefully about your future, so that you won’t regret it." She said the EXACT same thing to Mafuyu, but in her context its cuz her mother is overworking her while saying it's for her own "good", and she made Mafuyu believe that if she'll "fail" the future that her mother prepared she will "regret that". And since it's her friend she might have thought that it would work the same for Kanade. And just as I said before, the fact that for the sake of Mafuyu's protection niigo members (those who communicated with her) had to do things that could be considered selfless and the ones they are uncomfortable with. As I said, with Kanade it's the fact that she has to look at how her mother treating Mafuyu, while her mother is long gone, and understanding how different both of them are. In one other event (I forgot which one it was) Ena had to talk to her through the phone. And for the sake of Mafuyu's protection she brought up her father's name, which she is fairly uncomfortable with, because of his words she began being unconfident with herself and started to seek approval on the unhealthy amount. And she did all that, just so her mother wouldn't bother her for just a NIGHT. It makes me wonder, how would things be for Mizuki and what would happen then? Either way, KANADE LETS GO. The way she just without almost any hesitation said "I just cannot believe you" and "You're not really thinking about Mafuyu." YES CONFRONT HER, BEAT THAT ASS. (Sorry for a whole rant, but MAN this event is such a gem, i adore Kanade!)
forgot to add up to this, but i just thought about one another thing from this clip. The moment when she says "I thought that you truly cared about Mafuyu" Not just in general it is a very horrible thing to say, but is super manipulative, because in the main story Kanade was saying about how she doesn't want Mafuyu to disappear (which is true, but it could have easily considered selfish from Mafuyu's point of view), then in Carnation event she confronted herself on this. I don't recall the exact phrase, but it was something along the lines: "How do I want Mafuyu to feel? I don’t want her to disappear? That is just my ego talking, because it would hurt me if that were to happen to her "…I want her to smile" She is genuinely cares about her and doesn't want to come across as selfish or manipulative, and Mafuyu's mother uses this phrase to her advantage, to make her feel unsure of it. Damn this woman is messed up.

Considering Mafumom has lifeless eyes like Mafuyu when she’s depressed and sees no hope, I wonder if she’s trying to live vicariously through her daughter because she’s depressed with where her life is. Perhaps she wanted to be a doctor, and for some reason she couldn’t do it. Now she’s relying on Mafuyu to give her that satisfaction, since she wants to feel better and doesn’t care how Mafuyu feels about being used
that’s what i’m thinking too. her obsession with steering mafuyu’s life in the direction she wants makes it seem like she’s making up for her past mistakes using her child, under the guise of “giving you a good life”

I can say that my mom is also an "Asian mother",(although we are Asians) she expects too much, she often chooses difficult and high-paying jobs and criticizes professions that in her opinion are "poor", she reacts for good grades as if this is the order of things, and bullies and mocks verbally for bad grades. In speech, it is toxic, which denies it and so on. She always tells me how she achieved her goal, how she suffered as a child and that I undeservedly live in comfort, of course she does not say so directly, but according to her hints, I understand it that way, they are not happy just because their child is happy. Sometimes I feel like a Mafuyu because of this
a lot of toxic controlling parents tend to be like that, they failed in their childhood so they have children to project onto at the expense of their happiness, it's screwed up

As someone who's had to have conversations with the parents of friends (and partners)... This feels very well written. The nonchalant and collected behaviour, the patronizing smile while they tell you straight to your face that you're some kind of danger to their child... It always feels extremely hurtful, specially when you're young. I don't know the rest of this event's story, but props to Kanade. She was very strong.

i feel like it's important to highlight that she said "mafuyu is the most important child to me" before she talked about her personality traits and how she wants to make her happy. it's subtle dialogue like this that sets in that her mom sees her as more of a trophy to show off then a person you can also tell she's slowly manipulating kanade the same way she does mafuyu, so it's very clear she's aware of what she's doing. she does not care about mafuyu's wants or needs and it shows even brighter now that we have a face and voice to see her body language
Not to try to ruin the mood, but they do change clothes everyday. You can see at every upgradable cards. It just the model only limited on those clothes (uniform + casual)
the live models dont have varying outfits to my knowledge aside from a few exceptions such as the three-legged race models which is why it gives off the illusion that they can change their outfits in 0 seconds
Kanade has come so far, she’s become my hero. When she said that she took her parents’ love for granted, I choked up. Her parents let her pursue her dream. It is so easy to take that for granted. I’ve been there before.
At this point Mafuyu mom is the worst parent in Proseka. I mean at least Toya's dad and Ena's dad still let their kid to di what they want. Although they have different understanding and perspective with their child. But at least because both of them understand what they're talking about from experience (Toya's dad in music and Ena's dad in art). And they don't twist their child's feeling around. Mafuyu's mom though, her of way talking is very manipulative. Also her last line to Kanade before they depart, she clearly try to shake Kanade's commitment to show Mafuyu that her friend is wrong. Props to Proseka story writer though.

Many people really don't really know what is like to have real horrible parents. I just hope that in this story, Mafuyu's father can grow a backbone and do something- I'm not up to date with the story, but I know Mafuyu's father is a wimp who also do whatever Mafuyu's mom say, so it would be really cool if the writers made him grow out of it together with Mafuyu.

GOD this writing does an incredible job at making me super pissed off at mafuyu's mom all the sarcasm in her dialogue to try and pass it off to kanade as "mother knows best", only referring to mafuyu as "my child" to treat her as some sort of trophy after controlling her future, and then shooting at kanade with the ultra-sarcastic "you should think more about your future" to try and rub it in/bring her down, it's such amazing writing it makes me want to strangle mafumom
Mafuyu’s mom is honestly the best representation on how a manipulative parent is, when u try to confront them they’ll gaslight n manipulate u with words like “I’m ur parent, as a parent ik what’s good for u ok?” “Yes I’m the bad guy n u r the good guy” and so on. And if we just try to “rebel” (cough stand up for ourselves) they’ll get extremely angry with us and start saying that we had changed for the worst when rlly no, we just grew up n we r tired of following ur strict rules. Can we talk about how kind Kanade is???? She looked after Mafuyu’s true feelings, caused Ena’s change in perspective towards her art, is a dear friend to Mizuki, and she actively tries to better herself for the sake of others (exercising to be in better shape to make music, tries to help Honami when she is able). This moment was the first time we’ve seen Kanade genuinely angry about something, which speaks volumes about her character. That’s why I love this event. Kanade’s anger, while quiet, is huge. It’s always the quiet ones you have to look out for.

Imma rant real quick as someone with a similar familial relationship as Mafuyu, so uhhhhhh I dunno if many other people have experienced this kind of relationship- where empty 'wishes' from the guardian figures are obviously contradicted by their actions. Sometimes, parents/guardian figures get so wrapped into doing something (like working or getting grades for the betterment of the child's future/life) that they forget why they're doing it. Or even when they're just lowkey manipulative and do a lot of terrible things while ultimately still caring a little bit (although to a questionable degree) about their child. It's confusing, and I still try to understand the opposing party since they can't be all bad, but media like this makes it so clear-cut that- regardless of intent- the impact and influence is important and notable. As someone with experience with a nearly entire family relationship like this, it's so hard for me to just say that my feelings matter when I'm always put down and told that they're doing what's 'best for me', even by people watching from an outside perspective. I get Mafuyu's struggle, just in a different way where I recognize it as an issue but don't do too much about it because of the power my family has over me & the low self-esteem I have that makes it difficult to fight for myself without seeming narcissistic or incorrect. I don't even got many friends to tell me "She seemed so different from what you've told me!" since I just don't have friends anymore (let alone anyone to reassure me). I hope Mafuyu's story helps a lot of people, not just minors, tackle this issue. Even if it's hard due to the power and control the opposing party has over you, even if you don't have anyone to reassure your feelings are 'valid', it's worth fighting for the possibility of a happier life.

something i kinda like here is how in the scene with kanade's card, the lighting and overall mood feels incredibly cold. and the default background is filled with warm earth tones. i know it's unlikely to have been a conscious decision (at least on the end of the non-card), but i think it reflects how the asahina household is pretty well. in the background used for the scene, as well as in how mafuyu's mom is in general, you can see how it all puts on a warm exterior, yet when you actually listen to what is being said, you can understand just how messed up the situation really is. kanade's card is incredibly cold and filled with blues and grays. the lighting falls from behind her and the perspective makes everything feel incredibly uncomfortable. it fits with the dialogue. kanade is esentially telling mafuyu's mother that she doesn't care for her child's needs. but well. it is true. it was needed to be said. the thoughts behind those words, however, are nothing but full of selflessness and care for mafuyu's well being. just food for thought i suppose this event looks really good tho im so excited to read it when i finally have the time and a full translation comes out
This reminds me of a play that I read recently: A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen. Although the story is different (it's about a housewife who slowly realizes her husband does not love her as a person, but rather as a doll that he owns and can dress up), the themes are very similar. I realized this from the line that Mafuyu's mom said to Kanade near the end, when she tells her she should think carefully about her future so that she doesn't regret it. It reminded me of when, in A Doll's House, the husband saw his wife's friend knitting and told her that she should take up embroidery as a hobby instead. He said this because he believes embroidery is a much more graceful hobby than knitting, and he tries to influence her into being a "pretty perfect woman" like his wife. Maybe that's what Mafuyu's mom was doing as well, trying to influence Kanade into being a girl who values studying like Mafuyu does because she thinks music won't be beneficial in the long run. Perhaps it's also an effort to make Kanade rethink and tell Mafuyu to focus on her studies? Idk lol. This doesn't really reveal much about the story, I just wanted to say what was on my mind. I love how much was revealed here, and I can't wait for the next key event. Thank you so much for the translation!

Mrs. Asahina is basically Mafuyu's worst case scenario. Mafuyu puts on a facade in the hopes of making those around her happy and helping them. Her mother does it to manipulate and take advantage of people.

The difference between Kanade's reason and Mrs. Asahina's reason as to not letting mafuyu know is wildly different. Kanade doesn't let her know as to not worry her while Mrs. Asahina does it to prevent interfering with Mafuyu's studies. It really shows what they value more

The way mafuyu's mother speaks makes me think that she actually believes what she does is right, so perhaps she herself was treated the same way by her parents.

I think you're sort of onto something there! Personally, I agree with you in regards to Mafuyu's mom believing she's right, but not in the "this is what i was taught and what is supposed to make everyone happy" way but more in the "i need to invest in Mafuyu's future because that will have the most beneficial outcome". Mafuyu's mother doesn't see her as a person, an individual, but as an asset. Not just a trophy to show off, but something to invest in that will generate profit and social status. Re: the generational trauma, i think Niigo's story as a whole can also be viewed as an attempt to bring the detrimental flaws of Japan's "work till you literally die" culture to light and criticize it from the perspective of the people that suffer under it the most: future workers, aka children. I believe that besides being literally the scum of the Earth, Mafuyu's mother can also stand for the system as a whole to try and make the whole concept less abstract. Mafuyu's mom's generational trauma in this case would then just be the accumulation of decades of these torturous working conditions condensed into a single character, which conveniently brings me back to my headcanon that she represents a much larger thing.

The way she’s written, it’s genuinely difficult to tell. A lot of her dialogues with Mafuyu are incredibly manipulative and the words are so cherry-picked that it’s difficult to think of it as anything other than deliberate. At the same time, when she has dialogue with non-Mafuyu characters it’s like she’s convincing them (and the audience by proxy) that she really does want only the best for Mafuyu. It’s difficult to tell whether she’s convincing us or she genuinely thinks she’s in the right at that point.

As much as I’m not used to commenting on videos, this WHOLE clip of Kanade confronting Mafuyu's Mother is SO SHOWING of her character.
Even when saying goodbye to each other, she says: "Let's keep it a secret between us that we met today, we shouldn't let Mafuyu know."
Which, her reasoning for that is "Interfere with Mafuyu's studies" once again, while Kanade's is "I don't want to worry her more than enough."
That is a nice detail, but also such a fucked up one.
Another one is how she manipulates niigo members (not just her daughter).
With Kanade, for her it's really tough to be interacting with Mafuyu's Mother since her own passed away long time ago, and yet she can tell that it's different.
And her saying of: " you should think carefully about your future, so that you won’t regret it."
She said the EXACT same thing to Mafuyu, but in her context its cuz her mother is overworking her while saying it's for her own "good", and she made Mafuyu believe that if she'll "fail" the future that her mother prepared she will "regret that".
And since it's her friend she might have thought that it would work the same for Kanade.
And just as I said before, the fact that for the sake of Mafuyu's protection niigo members (those who communicated with her) had to do things that could be considered selfless and the ones they are uncomfortable with.
As I said, with Kanade it's the fact that she has to look at how her mother treating Mafuyu, while her mother is long gone, and understanding how different both of them are.
In one other event (I forgot which one it was) Ena had to talk to her through the phone.
And for the sake of Mafuyu's protection she brought up her father's name, which she is fairly uncomfortable with, because of his words she began being unconfident with herself and started to seek approval on the unhealthy amount.
And she did all that, just so her mother wouldn't bother her for just a NIGHT.
It makes me wonder, how would things be for Mizuki and what would happen then?
Either way, KANADE LETS GO.
The way she just without almost any hesitation said "I just cannot believe you" and "You're not really thinking about Mafuyu." YES
CONFRONT HER, BEAT THAT ASS.

Not just in general it is a very horrible thing to say, but is super manipulative, because in the main story Kanade was saying about how she doesn't want Mafuyu to disappear (which is true, but it could have easily considered selfish from Mafuyu's point of view), then in Carnation event she confronted herself on this.
I don't recall the exact phrase, but it was something along the lines: "How do I want Mafuyu to feel? I don’t want her to disappear? That is just my ego talking, because it would hurt me if that were to happen to her
"…I want her to smile"
She is genuinely cares about her and doesn't want to come across as selfish or manipulative, and Mafuyu's mother uses this phrase to her advantage, to make her feel unsure of it.

Considering Mafumom has lifeless eyes like Mafuyu when she’s depressed and sees no hope, I wonder if she’s trying to live vicariously through her daughter because she’s depressed with where her life is. Perhaps she wanted to be a doctor, and for some reason she couldn’t do it. Now she’s relying on Mafuyu to give her that satisfaction, since she wants to feel better and doesn’t care how Mafuyu feels about being used

I can say that my mom is also an "Asian mother",(although we are Asians) she expects too much, she often chooses difficult and high-paying jobs and criticizes professions that in her opinion are "poor", she reacts for good grades as if this is the order of things, and bullies and mocks verbally for bad grades. In speech, it is toxic, which denies it and so on. She always tells me how she achieved her goal, how she suffered as a child and that I undeservedly live in comfort, of course she does not say so directly, but according to her hints, I understand it that way, they are not happy just because their child is happy. Sometimes I feel like a Mafuyu because of this

As someone who's had to have conversations with the parents of friends (and partners)... This feels very well written. The nonchalant and collected behaviour, the patronizing smile while they tell you straight to your face that you're some kind of danger to their child... It always feels extremely hurtful, specially when you're young. I don't know the rest of this event's story, but props to Kanade. She was very strong.

i feel like it's important to highlight that she said "mafuyu is the most important child to me" before she talked about her personality traits and how she wants to make her happy. it's subtle dialogue like this that sets in that her mom sees her as more of a trophy to show off then a person
you can also tell she's slowly manipulating kanade the same way she does mafuyu, so it's very clear she's aware of what she's doing. she does not care about mafuyu's wants or needs and it shows even brighter now that we have a face and voice to see her body language

Kanade has come so far, she’s become my hero. When she said that she took her parents’ love for granted, I choked up. Her parents let her pursue her dream. It is so easy to take that for granted. I’ve been there before.

At this point Mafuyu mom is the worst parent in Proseka. I mean at least Toya's dad and Ena's dad still let their kid to di what they want. Although they have different understanding and perspective with their child. But at least because both of them understand what they're talking about from experience (Toya's dad in music and Ena's dad in art). And they don't twist their child's feeling around. Mafuyu's mom though, her of way talking is very manipulative.
Also her last line to Kanade before they depart, she clearly try to shake Kanade's commitment to show Mafuyu that her friend is wrong. Props to Proseka story writer though.

She looked after Mafuyu’s true feelings, caused Ena’s change in perspective towards her art, is a dear friend to Mizuki, and she actively tries to better herself for the sake of others (exercising to be in better shape to make music, tries to help Honami when she is able). This moment was the first time we’ve seen Kanade genuinely angry about something, which speaks volumes about her character. That’s why I love this event. Kanade’s anger, while quiet, is huge. It’s always the quiet ones you have to look out for.

Imma rant real quick as someone with a similar familial relationship as Mafuyu, so uhhhhhh
I dunno if many other people have experienced this kind of relationship- where empty 'wishes' from the guardian figures are obviously contradicted by their actions.
Sometimes, parents/guardian figures get so wrapped into doing something (like working or getting grades for the betterment of the child's future/life) that they forget why they're doing it.
Or even when they're just lowkey manipulative and do a lot of terrible things while ultimately still caring a little bit (although to a questionable degree) about their child.
It's confusing, and I still try to understand the opposing party since they can't be all bad, but media like this makes it so clear-cut that- regardless of intent- the impact and influence is important and notable.
As someone with experience with a nearly entire family relationship like this, it's so hard for me to just say that my feelings matter when I'm always put down and told that they're doing what's 'best for me', even by people watching from an outside perspective.
I get Mafuyu's struggle, just in a different way where I recognize it as an issue but don't do too much about it because of the power my family has over me & the low self-esteem I have that makes it difficult to fight for myself without seeming narcissistic or incorrect.
I don't even got many friends to tell me "She seemed so different from what you've told me!" since I just don't have friends anymore (let alone anyone to reassure me).
I hope Mafuyu's story helps a lot of people, not just minors, tackle this issue.
Even if it's hard due to the power and control the opposing party has over you, even if you don't have anyone to reassure your feelings are 'valid', it's worth fighting for the possibility of a happier life.

something i kinda like here is how in the scene with kanade's card, the lighting and overall mood feels incredibly cold. and the default background is filled with warm earth tones. i know it's unlikely to have been a conscious decision (at least on the end of the non-card), but i think it reflects how the asahina household is pretty well. in the background used for the scene, as well as in how mafuyu's mom is in general, you can see how it all puts on a warm exterior, yet when you actually listen to what is being said, you can understand just how messed up the situation really is.
kanade's card is incredibly cold and filled with blues and grays. the lighting falls from behind her and the perspective makes everything feel incredibly uncomfortable. it fits with the dialogue. kanade is esentially telling mafuyu's mother that she doesn't care for her child's needs. but well. it is true. it was needed to be said. the thoughts behind those words, however, are nothing but full of selflessness and care for mafuyu's well being.

This reminds me of a play that I read recently: A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen. Although the story is different (it's about a housewife who slowly realizes her husband does not love her as a person, but rather as a doll that he owns and can dress up), the themes are very similar. I realized this from the line that Mafuyu's mom said to Kanade near the end, when she tells her she should think carefully about her future so that she doesn't regret it. It reminded me of when, in A Doll's House, the husband saw his wife's friend knitting and told her that she should take up embroidery as a hobby instead. He said this because he believes embroidery is a much more graceful hobby than knitting, and he tries to influence her into being a "pretty perfect woman" like his wife. Maybe that's what Mafuyu's mom was doing as well, trying to influence Kanade into being a girl who values studying like Mafuyu does because she thinks music won't be beneficial in the long run. Perhaps it's also an effort to make Kanade rethink and tell Mafuyu to focus on her studies? Idk lol.
This doesn't really reveal much about the story, I just wanted to say what was on my mind. I love how much was revealed here, and I can't wait for the next key event. Thank you so much for the translation!

Ma'am didn't know even Kanade's parents encourage her taking that path and composing music to save people's live. And it's the purpose why Kanade making music at the first place. Her words of manipulating might work for Mafuyu as she's her child, but not for Kanade.
