    Well now I can see why they made one of his secondary feats inspire where allies around him do more damage.

    I think the reason why they chose the centurion to wear this armour when he came out is becuz ubisoft wanted to make him as close to a knight as possible or they wanted to show mor things from the for honor world that r not close to history

      I always assumed he was a mix of Varangian guard and the Praetorian guard

    Is it true that ten centurions make a millenion?

  • @ReconRookie
    @ReconRookie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    So a couple notes.
    1. The Gladius was the primary weapon for every legionary. The only main exceptions were the triarii who used the Hasta, and cavalry and auxilia who used the Spatha
    2. The plate isn't entirely wrong since officers of high standing or wealth could afford an armored cuirass called a 'Lorica Musculata'. Although most centuriones would wear either lorica hamata (chainmail) or lorica segmentata (also called laminata) depending on what period we're looking at, with the hamata being worn through most of the republic and into the early empire, and the segmentata being worn until the fall of the empire
    Other than that, this is a damn good video that offers a quick synopsis as to what a centurion was and I can't wait for the inevitable video on the medjay

      A couple notes to further elaborate on your notes: 1. Triarii were the elite during the republic era, and as such can´t really be compared to roman imperial era legions. the auxiliarys who used the spatha were almost exclusively cavalry soldiers, as the spatha was designed with cavalry in mind.

    Wait...weren’t the Gladius the main weapon of the legionary?

    • @RavenKnightYT
      @RavenKnightYT  3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      It was more of a sidearm.

    • @bloodangel19
      @bloodangel19 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Usualy not, they would have pilums and sphatas(depending if we are talking about foot soldeirs or cavalery)

    • @jimmydaigle8892
      @jimmydaigle8892 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It was definitely the primary weapon of a Marian legionary the pilum was a javalin that would be throw into the enemy formation to weaken the shield wall before engaging in melee

    • @HaloFTW55
      @HaloFTW55 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For the pre-Marian legions? Not always, at first it was the hasta (spear) with the Greek xiphos short sword being used as a sidarm. When the Romans fought the Iberian tribes during the Punic Wars, they came in contact with the "gladius hispanises" ("Hispanic sword") and liked it so much that they decided to adopt the design of said sword for everyone to use. At this time, legionaries still have to buy their own weapons for use.
      For the classical Marian reform legions we all know and love, it was the Gladius that was standard issue for everyone (even the camp slaves if things get hectic enough). Since the government/general buys weapons to equip their soldiers, virtually every legionary was well armed with their government issued weapons.
      Later after the 3rd Century Crisis, the Gladius was replaced by the Spatha, which has a longer blade originally used by cavalry but later became standard issue. Then much later, half of the Roman Army (that relied on conscripted troops) reverted to the spear and shield since it's easier to train conscripts to use so they can fend off barbarian invasions. Though despite that, the spatha still remained in use.
      Rome then stuck with the spear, spatha, and shield until the Empire split into two and the Western Roman Empire fell.
      A thousand years later, the Eastern Roman Empire still used the shield, spear, and spatha until the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire finally fell in 1453.
      Also, Centurions were literally the equal to the sergeants and warrant officers (senior enlisted). The Centurion and his 2iC (2nd in command) literally partake in the fighting instead of fully hanging back to rear and command. All this because the Centurion literally has to set an example by standing firm on the front lines, all this in addition to using their initiative and command their troops so that if a change occurs, they can manoeuvre their cohort to best exploit/reinforce a place as they see fit. The Roman centurions were truly leaders in every sense of the word.
