Shugoki was my OG main hero when the game first came out because he was the most unique looking character among the cast. Although Warden is now my main, I'll never forget Thicc Boi!
After you point out Shugoki’s relation with oni and the line in the trailer that indicates he’s from a foreign land, a place instantly pops into my mind. No, that place isn’t Polynesia nor is it New Zealand, this place is actually Onigashima from the story of Momotaro, the homeland of all onis. Yeh, Onigashima and Momotaro aren’t real, and Shugoki is apparently a human being not an oni, but a lot of fantasy races in different cultures are people’s imagination about outlanders with different culture. For example, in Ramayana, Sri Lanka is described as the land of the demons from a Hindu perspective, but in reality it might just be the imagination Indians created for the native people of Sri Lanka. What if it’s the same for the samurais in the For Honor lore? What if they find this “Onigashima” as they call it, and on the island there are these tall scary foreigners who wields the kanabo as their staple weapon, who integrated into the samurai’s society over time, as these “onis” become, the Shugoki.
Hey dude gotta say I love your content and I personally main shugoki and thanks for the insight of who he was in history, also I love your shugoki man that shit looks dope
there are Foreigners who got inducted into Samurai Rank or at least got accepted to fight alongside a Samurai, while they are rare in Japanese History. People like William Adams, a English Pirate turned Samurai after getting inducted by Tokugawa Ieyasu, it is also Adam that is responsible for the prosecution of Christians in Japan. This is due to England back then was fighting for the Protestant cause during the Reformation war, and Japanese was heavily influenced by the Catholic Portuguese and Spanish. While Japan didn't end up Protestant Christian, the English and Dutch did influence Japan(albeit in a insignificant extend), making them the only Foreign Nations that traded with Japan during their Isolationist period, although William's goal was to rid Catholic (or specifically Spanish and Portuguese) Influence in Japan. Junes Brunet, who fought for the Shogunate side during the Boshin War in the 1800s, a French Advisor who fought alongside Hijikata Toshio and the Shinsengumi. He and a handful of other French Advisor even disobeyed Napolean III's order to return in order to fight to the end with his Japanese Students. Although he did survived in the end after the last Samurai resistance surrendered. But most famous Foreigner the fit Shugoki's description is the Black Samurai , Yasuke. The African Slave turned Samurai who got inducted by non other than Oda Nobunaga himself, and was accepted as his personal Bodyguard. He was described as a giant , taller and stronger than others. Yet Yasuke is humble and stoic, also of high integrity, a combination of traits that impressed the first Unifier of Japan himself. Yasuke was even portrayed Sumo-Wrestling in a painting, and defended Nobunaga till the very end in Honnoji, where him, Nobunaga's wife, and Nobunaga's page (also alledged Gay lover) defended him from traitorous Troops while the warlord commited Seppuku in the burning temple. Yasuke survived, escorted Nobunaga's son to attempted to counter attack, but was caught by the traitor Akechi Mitsuhide. Akechi allegedly sent Yasuke back to the Portugueses Jesuits (Missionaries) after claiming he is not human. Although many historian interprets this as Akechi showing respect to Yasuke, as most caught Samurai or enemies of High profile either get beheaded or forced to commit seppuku.
hito may be more currently useful.... but i started my early days of for honor in season one as a shug, and i shall always consider myself a shug.... the sheer brutality of his entire kit is unmatched, the memes are top kek as well
Hey raven, straight up history question, did the Vikings and Knights develop a martial art by the rough time period we see in for honor? Or ever for that matter?
Not in the strict sense of the kind we think of. Europeans developed combat systems and techniques and they studied, perfected, and trained in their use. But they were mostly a general study for JUST warfare, not for sport, meditation, or enlightenment like many of the Asian martial arts.
Another tid bit about the Oni, it is possible in japanese mythos for a person to become an Oni if their spirit is particularly foul enough, as seen with the story of Shuten Doji, once a drunkard monk that became not only an Oni, but the king of them. He was so vicious in fact that when he was decapitated his head was still alive and had to be dumped in a pit.
Another thing that's been noticed and pointed out about the Shugoki is some have... Unusual, hair colors, for samurai, leading some to speculate that they may have come at least partly from the same stock as the knights and vikings.
One theory holds is that they are descendants of Vikings who settled in the Myre either having been driven out of Valkenheim to the north are they stuck around after raiding and settled the land. Helmets like Chimera Bugyo and Five Points give the Shugoki blonde and red hair, which needless to say, are very nordic in origin.
