- It's been a while since we've heard some Undertale music and I've been thinking of Undertale since I started playing it on stream again. So today we're listening to Hopes and Dreams! This might be one of my new favorite tracks in the entire Undertale OST. Can't wait to experience it in game.

Fun fact: Toby Fox has said that this song was the hardest song of the game to compose. That's not surprising, considering it's arguably the most important song in the game.
It definitely pays off. Imo this is the crown jewel of the soundtrack

The blending of asgore's theme and the toriel's theme for their [spoilers] is such a cool idea I never thought of. This ending is a reward. And your first time hearing this song in game is a huge moment for everyone, not just the main character.

There’s also floweys theme in there which again makes sense in the context of the story.
And you got Snowdin in there, which reminds the player of Sans and Papyrus! All that's missing is Undyne and Alphys' themes.
Hopes and dreams has basically a small part of each theme in the game inside it so it can mix if all together to give us an absolute art piece and a sense of nostalgia
For me, it just serves to hinder me during the fight, because I constantly have tears in my eyes every time I even hear the song, let alone play through it.
Love how Hopes and Dreams felt like an ending to a high tech movie with millions of dollars put behind it

Coalescence or Monsoon at least. Both tracks slap and help set the mood for each point of the game.
Yes! The RoR games have such good soundtracks. The Might As Well Be Dead, and Once in a Lullaby from the Survivors of the Void DLC are my favorites.
Correct me if I’m mistaken, but the happy melody mentioned at 8:00 is Your Best Friend, which is Flowey’s theme. So even though the tone is overtly positive it has that underlying sense of tension and apprehension. Which is pretty fitting imo.

Yeah, Flowey's leitmotif is present in that part of the song likely to reference that Asriel is Flowey, which is ironic because in finale there is a his theme leitmotif.

The hopes of the king, the dreams of the queen, and the sorrow of the child mixed into the song that brings the entire story together in the climax of an epic story. This song was, and still is one of my all time favorites in gaming.
Not to mention, all your friends you met along the way, all their hearts beating as one!! :DD

It's the hopes and dreams of everyone, literally everyone. I mean, it plays when you are trying to rescue all the monsters from inside Asriel after Flowey absorbed them all. You're supposed to use everyone's hopes and dreams to "save the world". Also that's why snowdin's theme is in there too, the song that represents all the monsters that are trying to have a nice life despite being trapped underground. It's more than just the king, the queen and their son, way more than that.
@@ocean037 I actually missed snowdins theme being in it, never directly noticed cause I don't really remember snowdins theme. But yes I know its everyones combined hopes and dreams, but asgore, and tori were the more prominent figures in /his/ life. I was going off of that. Thanks for pointing snowdin out though! I will have to keep an ear out for it next time.

Leitmotif you missed, flowey's theme starts playing in the background at about 1:19 in the song and becomes the melody at 1:30
Toby Fox is a goat'd composer with a number of phenomenal songs under his belt, but for me this one will always be top ten for sure. There are so many emotions conveyed in Hopes and Dreams, and even without the context of the game its an absolute bop

You always shock me with how much you can infer about the circumstance by the song itself. Shows both your awareness with these musical elements and Toby Fox's care into making his soundtrack as meaningful as possible.

Without going into spoiler territory, your describing this tune as a "reward" is a very great description. I remember when I first heard it, it was the same "day" the game launched. I'd been pretty much playing it nonstop and it was 1 in the morning. I felt like I was experiencing something sacred, something well-earned.
I absolutely idolize Toby Fox's composition genius, and boy howdy would I love to possess even a tenth of it.
You need to get the Pacifist ending to hear this song and fight the boss. The story comes to head and the payoff is incredible. Such a deeply moving game and the music sets the scene perfectly. I love Toby Fox's work so much

I just wanted to add that the boss theme of Flowey in the neutral route also has the same leitmotifs and melody, except highly distorted.

What I like the most about this song in game is how the beat drop is kinda sycronized with the rainbow color effects starting. You get a feeling like "wooahh"
Davi discovered the Dreemurr leitmotif. What got my about this song, and still does, is how playful it is. After all of it, after all he did, after all that was done to him, he just wanted to play with his friend, and no intentions could veil that.
Very bold of you to listen to this song without completing the other routes of the game. This is one of the most triumphant and amazing songs in the game, and has a partner song ("SAVE the World")
Now that you mention SAVE The World, I'm curious if he'd spot the link between it and Final Power
His Theme is also linked to those two. It’s actually between Hopes and Dreams and SAVE The World

I love how you explain things in simple terms that makes it easy to understand for those of us who know nothing about music theory.
This has always been my favorite boss theme from this game, just magnificent and full of energy.
The fact you can connect Asgore, Toriel and Asriel all to each other just by music without playing the game shows just how powerful Toby Fox's composing truly is.

Fun fact: toby made asriel move since in a interview he said if he made asriel stand still he looked like a doofus
That's a cool fact. Honestly was a good decision since his sprite has his little robe drift up a bit so it would be a bit awkward just standing there menacingly but goofingly

Hopes and Dreams is literally the boss fight right before the good end! Literally the last hurdle to the perfect ending. As such it recalls all the connections and experiences the player made along the way!
Let's put the "Spamton should only recommend Big Shot" thing aside for a while and listen to some other masterpieces out there.
For example, "Battle! Zero Lab" from Pokemon Scarlet & Violet.

Or a semi-obscure, but equally cool Hymnos from an Ar Tonelico game (like EXEC_PHANTASMAGORIA).
7:33 That’s so cool!! I love how this motif fits in the theme song of the whole family tree. It’s in Toriel’s theme, Asgore’s and it fits perfectly with Asriel’s!!
I love how you kept bringing up that this sounds both like the music for a victory cutscene, and for a battle, because this battle is both! As a fight it's a victory lap, a display of the relationships you've built over the game even as you fight the final boss, to the point that you can't even lose it. I love how much that came through in the song itself.
I literally started crying when you played Asgores Theme under the harmony, you are so goddamn right you do not look like a fool as why this fits so much aaaaaaah
The audible connection to Asgore's theme with no references to it per se, making you remind it of Asgore's theme is just some toby fox magic at work.

You would have to finish the neutral route, then you can beat omega flowey, reload the game, and finish the True Pacifist Route.
Or play it two times.
Same. All I knew was there was 3 main endings, so I did my best to do True Pacifist. I also knew a little about Asgore, Omega Flowey, and Sans back then. But, I didn't know how they were connected. I did correctly assume Sans was the Genocide Route, but I was guessing about the others. I did screw up Toriel's fight, so I redid that, to then get called out for it! I was like, "Ayo, wtf?!" But I somehow managed to not screw up the rest of the way. I died several times to Undyne before I remembered I could Run, lol. I was also playing parallel to Jacksepticeye's playthrough, only watching each section after I played it first to not spoil anything. But man, that True Ending hit hard, especially when I walked all the way back to the very start. That's what made me tear up most.

The Asgore connection makes so much sense! This song is reminiscent of a time when humans and monsters got along whereas Asgore is the pinnacle of the brokenness between humans and monsters
If you didn't know, this music was inspired by a band called Anamanaguchi, you can really see that the chiptune mixed with real instruments 'comes' from them!
But the this is: This music became so popular that even Anamanaguchi made a cover of it! You should def check it out!

A lot of remixes and reimaginings of Hopes and Dreams usually pair with another track in the game, called "Save the world".
The two basically go hand-in-hand. You'll understand when you experience it!
Ive firmly believed and expressed how once you understand HOW a song is made or played you appreciate it a lot more. And this is a prime example. Seeing and hearing what Toby Fox did to this makes me love this song even more.
When the guitars first hit, it made me so excited to see how happy and elated you were with the music. It’s so amazing to see someone with such a deep appreciation in music cover my favorite game.

Snowdin's theme is also the melody in an event you can experience with papyrus. Which was reminiscent to me of happy tunes in the Ace Attorney games
The best part of this soundtrack is when the beat drop happens in this song and it effects the game. It’s so cool.
At 8:00 is my favorite part in the song because it is floweys theme which heavily ties in with this specific theme in a way you need to play the game to understand

i just binge watched a bunch of these undertale videos youve done and i love how every time you have a big reaction to something in the music you go into detail about what exactly it was in the music that sounded cool - it makes watching these videos different from generic reaction videos because i get to learn so much about the musical construction that goes into creating the emotional effect of these songs
It's a wonderful theme. I'm glad you finally got to listen to it and talk about it here. It has a special place in my heart because I had this music playing in the background when I asked my girlfriend now wife out for the first time. The happiness of the song brings back a swirl of memories for me.

It is, almost impossible to explain the situation of this song without entirely ruining the story of the pacifist route. But it is VERY emotionally charged, and arguably the most important part of the game.
The fact that you can use the various pieces of music in toby tracks to assemble where the track would play is sooooo cool. DAMN i love music

This song is a rollercoaster of emotion for me. When it started for my playthrough, it had me going from one emotion to another all throughout. It's very powerful, and possibly the most important song in the entire game, even more important than the annoying dog theme and the Wrong Number Song.
And there's a very good reason you're getting hints of Asgore's theme to it. I won't say why, but when you realize, it'll hit you in a way that'll only make sense if you're really paying attention, but it will make *perfect* sense.
The title may be "Hopes And Dreams", but this is a song that builds up, and is built *from,* pure DETERMINATION.

When I first fought asriel I was so ecstatic like finally a good ending and the song gives me goosebumps while making me cry and so happy at the same time

The reason snowdin plays in this is because the two leitmotifs for snowdin are called hopes and dreams.
This song always makes me insanely emotional. It’s hard for me not to hear this song without tearing up
The Snowdin motif has been used in several tracks, including some in Deltarune. Based on its appearances, to me it is the anthem of the monsters, the theme of them getting to live their lives.
This song has so many layers I don't think a single cover of it managed to get it right. A true masterpiece.

I love this theme. It's a culmination of everything you've managed to do to get there, the power of love and friendship to push you forward through all of the hardship.
I recommend anything from Chicory: A Colorful Tale. Lena Raine did the OST and she made gold.
I love hearing you try to speculate what the context of a song is based what themes and melodies it uses from other songs! It's really interesting. This is definitely one of the undertale songs that's SO cool on it's own but gets even better once you hear it in context!

The snowdin leitmotif probably isn't specifically for snowdin, but the idea of monster kind being happy, like in the shop, or dating, or here kind of

I have to recommend the Tears of the Kingdom theme music! It goes so hard and if you're able to predict the plot from it before the game even releases would be the biggest bragging rights.
The Snowdin motif you found also plays in the date with Papyrus, as well as in the shop themes. Its use in this song could be referencing those moreso than Snowdin's theme
Fun fact: Toby Fox "stole" the motif from the stage 7 theme of Kirby's Block Ball.
To this day this song still makes me emotional. And the 'contrary movement', my god Toby's genius and ability to seamlessly tie themes into his is incredible.

I just really like his blind reactions because it gives new insight. As an example, I take the "sophistication" and "classical feel" in the contrary movement as a direct reference to Asriel being a prince, and the "Asgore/Toriel but happy" parts as Asriel being a teeny tiny little kid monster goat who just wants to be playful and happy and innocent underneath all the Flowey and very battle-y """mask""" he puts on during the entire game... Also maybe the song is telling us he's glad we're coming for him in the "modulation" part despite him still being hostile atm 🥺, haven't finished the video but I'm loving it so far because it's highlighting things I wouldn't have noticed otherwise, when I've paid a lot of attention to every detail I could catch in this song before. Love finding out new things about this game, it's so meaningful and deep. If you ever read this when the spoiler tag isn't an issue anymore, thanks so much Davi ❤!
