ROAD TRIP MIDDLE EAST: Iran (Part 2 - Shiraz)

  • After filming in Dubai last episode, I set off for Iran to start my road trip across the Middle East. My journey began in the beautiful city of Shiraz, known for flowers and poetry. Come with me as I explore my first Persian city as a female alone - the food, the architecture, the markets of the bazaar, but mostly, the people. I stayed in the magical Darbe Shazdeh boutique hotel, where I met an inspiring couple from London, travelling Iran with their children as a family. I also became friends with Faranak, the owner of the hotel, who gave me fascinating insight into life as a woman, business owner and advocate of tourism to Iran. I hope you enjoy this travelogue. I still have much to learn about Iran's history and politics and culture, however, I hope that maybe I might encourage you to consider the positives and beauty of this frequently misunderstood country.

    Part way through this episode you will hear some Persian jazz. You can find these tracks here:
    • "Navaya" - Persian Sid...
    • Zendegi Naima Persian ...
    The ethereal track you hear at the very end of the episode is a talented pianist named Yanni. You can find his music here:

    • @AlexFerrero12
      @AlexFerrero12 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@davidhelvering great to hear that brother. here is the thing, i am an italian-iranian and sadly when i speak of iran , it is often mistaken with Iraq simply because of the media. Iran and Iraq only share a border and nothing else. it also happens that some people go like huh? Iran? where is that? sorry but how can you get passed elementary school and not knowing where Iran is. nevermind higher education.

    • @davidhelvering
      @davidhelvering 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      AlexFerrero12 - I just tested myself, and I didn't do very well. I looked on a blank map, and my first instinct was to put Iran east of the Caspian Sea, north of Turkmenistan. My second instinct was to put it where Syria is. So, I failed on both accounts. For some reason, I thought Iran was west of Iraq, not east. At least I know now. :)
      I never got Iran and Iraq confused as countries, although I really couldn't tell you the differences between the cultures. I mostly just know that there is a difference. I am enjoying Kylie's series. This episode in particular really makes me want to visit Shiraz. Of course, every place she visits makes me want to visit there. Haha
      As for how someone can get through school without knowing where Iran and Iraq are on a map, I think it's easy to learn things in school and then forget that you ever knew them. I remember learning who invented the cotton gin, then forgetting it, and then relearning it years later. When we are learning information, if that information isn't repeated for a duration of time, it will be forgotten. I'm sure a lot of people learn about the Middle East and then forget all about it because they moved on to different material. I used to look at a lot of maps, and so I had a good sense of world geography, but that was 30 years ago, and I've forgotten much of it.
      Thanks for the conversation!

      Iranian just like the US, but in reality, they hate all nationals and consider themselves supreme. In the sense if you are American they will respect you even if you don’t do anything for them. But if you are Asian and you do good to them. They stay scornful towards you.

    • @jackyoung9691
      @jackyoung9691 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      hania pn an example, do you like Arabs?! And will you treat Arabs if they come to your country just like this girl?!

    • @jackyoung9691
      @jackyoung9691 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      hania pn this is your opinion. But from what I observed for many years, Iranians are racist, and they believe they have the unique history and culture that other nations don't own. By the way, Arabs make up about 2 percent of the population.

    • @jackyoung9691
      @jackyoung9691 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      hania pn خوب بگذار یک کمی مسئله رو بسط بدم. من بیشتر از ۲۰ سال با ایرانیان زندگی کردم. و بسیار خوب با خلق و خوی ایرانیان آشنا هستم. واقعا شما میخواید من قانع کنید که ایرانیها از اینکه عرب مورد خطاب قرار بگیرند متنفرند!! خوب عربها رو رها کنید نظرتون درباره افغانها چیه لابد در این مورد نیز ایرانیان متنفرند که افغانی به حساب بیان! ایرانیان نژاد پرستند و در این هیچ شکی نیست چون طرز برخوردشون با کشورهای خاورمیانه کاملا متفاوت از کشورهای غربی هستش. این که من کجایی هستم مهم نیست من به ۴ زبان مینویسم و صحبت می کنم. حالا اینکه واقعا تاریخ و فرهنگ ایرانیان واقعا منحصر به فرد هستش البته اون طور که ایرانیها اعتقاد دارند جای بحث دارد و من خودم با این نظر موافق نیستم. اما نمیخواهم وارد بحث تاریخی بشم. اگر یک عرب ایران میرفت شاید یک لیوان چای بهش میدادن اما این نوع پذیرایی رو ایرانیها فقط از غربیها میکنند. در حالی که مثلا مردم عراق همین پذیرایی رو حتی از چینیها میکنند و هیچ تفاوتی از نظر نژادی قائل نمی‌شوند.

I was actually so blessed to have been able to live in Shiraz for 4 years, and I taught English to young children :) Watching this now, and I'm back in America....it actually makes me miss all the amazingly friendly people I met each day walking the streets anywhere !! The people are so excited once they hear I'm American ( born and raised ) and also a Muslim hijabi too !! They love America, and always asked why am I living there and not in my country. I wish more people knew the love Iranians have for America !! Wow !!! Seeing the food...the sweets, the tea ( orange blossoms picked from the tree....I can smell it ) Great video !!!!

    You are such a beautiful human. You have the look of a silver screen siren, and an intelligence, emotional depth and soul that is rare on social media.
    You are a gift. Don't take this as pressure or obsession or some such. I just struggle to calmly, eloquently articulate the joy you bring, and the resonance your art strikes within me.

    Amazing video!!! I was in Tehran last week and can only confirm that the people I met were very open and friendly!
    The walk towards the mountains north from Tehran starting at the Sarband Square is a super experience. The food stalls and restaurants during that walk are amazing! An awesome country and a must visit!

    Brilliant. These quotes really stuck with me: “We’re people. Like everyone else”, and “Everywhere you go, you’ll always meet good people. And everywhere you go, you’ll learn an experience. And that makes you a human being.”
    I’ve found this to be true too. The majority of people everywhere are good people and just want to live their lives out with some level of happiness and fulfillment. I have seen this time and time again in different countries. I wish everyone could see that.
    We focus on the bad people too much and label whole countries or groups of people based on the reports about those bad people and their activities or their government’s activities.
    You have a great gift and talent in storytelling and your capability of evoking an emotion with cinematography is amazing. Also, you’re a great interviewer because you put the people at ease and ask such great, insightful questions that allow them to express their feelings.
    You’re an old soul and wise beyond your years!
    Keep it up!

      @Germania Kuoni You are courageous to speak the truth about Saudis and Iran. I saw a video a couple days ago where Jews in US are protesting against Israel's zionist movement. I am afraid that Rabbi will be branded anti semite.
