Thank you for the info! My neighbor gave me his pool and pump and I’m trying to figure it out. When I turn on filtration there doesn’t seem to be suction, does it take a certain amount of time for pressure to build? I don’t want to burn the motor experimenting!
As long as there isn't air in the system already ,it should start up right away with good suction. Assuming you have the same or similar setup as mine. I would make sure you have enough water in the pool to fill the stock skimmer basket before the Intex filter sucks it out. If you aren't getting enough water in the tank attached to the pool the Intex will throttle back when air gets in the system. Then the skimmer tank will fill again, but now there is air in the collection basket that has to be released before it starts full output again.

How often do you need to top up the sand filter, and also do you have any suggestions for an intex pool heater or can you use a bestway heater. thankyou
Hey Molly - I just check the sand level each year after I pull it out of storage, and the sand is good for 3-5 years. I haven't looked into a pool heater yet. Currently I use one of those bubble pads that sit over the top of the pool. We live in Wisconsin and go swimming in Lake Superior a lot as well, so we're used to cold water. ;)
@@GuidingBoltGaming Where did you buy one of those bubble pads from ,we live in the uk, very cold here. How much does that raise the temperature?thanks Molly
Hey Angelina - I typically use recirculate in the evening after I've shocked the pool or if I've added chlorine/bromine tabs and want to keep the water moving.
Hello I just bought my first intex pool and had no idea how to run the cycles thank you for explaining it. Mine does not have a collection basket is that something I buy separate?
@@GuidingBoltGaming I have the same set up you have we're having problem with losing pressure after about 1 hour. I've changed sand cleaned out everything still loses pressure. I put it on recirculate it runs fine.
Thank you, very informative. I have a saltwater system attached to my sand filter pump and find that after an hour the flow drops so that the salt water turns off. I then run on N, open the valve and it works. It seems I have a build up of air each time but cannot locate the source. Any thoughts welcome.
I did the same. I also removed the skimmer and the flow reducer on one side and whaddyaknow....it ran all night with no problem, saltwater system still on boost. It's been the skimmer slowing the flow this whole time. Not sure how I'll ever get the vacuum to work.
We recently bought this pump and can't figure it out. The manual doesn't answer the questions. What setting should the pump be in the clean the water? Filter? If so, it works on filter for a little bit, the flow is not strong then shuts off. What are we doing wrong? Thanks in advance.
How does the FP setting work when dissolving salt? What setting would allow debris to go into your Leaf basket but not generate chlorine. basically just to keep pool free from fine debri. Your video is one of the most intuitive ones that I've watched. Thank you.
Hey Carolyn - Sorry I don't have a salt system. However, for the debris question basically any setting that is running water through the pump is going to be collecting debris in the collection basket. You'll mainly be using recirculate and filter which will both collect waste there. For the chlorine you really should use a float. Even though people sometimes place it in the collection basket it's not recommended as the chlorine levels build up and aren't good for the motor. Hope this helps!
You can use the recirculate option to keep water moving without filtering it, for faster movement. This might be desired when using such a chlorine floater, or during chemical adjustment or a shock treatment. It's also an option to disperse a flocculent treatment to settle cloudy water's contaminants prior to vacuuming it.
You'll find that most of the time you're running it on filter. I usually use recirculate in the evening after I've shocked the pool (once per week typically). Also, you'll use the backwash/rinse cycle from time to time when the tank needs a cleansing. Here's a vid on that process if you need it: th-cam.com/video/HmYlGuX5o1k/w-d-xo.html
How long have you had the filter? It's recommended to swap out the sand every 3-5 years. I would pop the top off the tank and inspect it to make sure everything looks good. If you didn't give it a good backwash/rinse when you stored it I would suggest doing that first to clean up the inside. Then you should be all set to start filtering.
I have one more issue, the pump doesn't have pressure when the water return to the pool. I order new sand bag just in case that it is the issue. Do you know what can be the problem? Thanks!
I always vacuumed on the recirculate or filter setting. Waste is designed to pump water/debris out of the pool and out the waste port so you would lose water very quickly using that setting.
excellent video straight to the point, no long build up about your personality and yada yada.. only thing is you didn’t explain the last part about the recirculation-what is the purpose for using this setting exactly?
never mind sorry! i found a reason for it. filling my pool up but i may not be around at the moment the water reaches the intake. i want to cleanse the sludge from the sand so i’ll put it on recirculate till it reaches enough depth to be able to turn on the backwash. this way i don’t get all that sludge from the sand into the pool. THANKS AGAIN
This was so helpful!! But I still have a question, so that clear thingy that’s next to the meter, what do I do if there’s sand in there? I backwashed my new pool & filter & I let it go for about 10 minutes & there’s sand in there now & I don’t know if that’s a bad thing?
When I shock I typically use recirculate, and if it's just chlorine tabs I keep it on filter. That being said I've done it both ways and haven't had any issues.
Do you have any advice on what to do when the 6 way Valve gets jammed and is not functioning? It depresses but I can't turn it! I've only had it for 3 weeks. What could possible be causing this!?
Sounds like it was either assembled incorrectly, or an issue with the spider gasket. If you remove the top of the tank, there should be a plastic cover that you can remove with a screw or two. Once you get that off you should be able to inspect the underside of the valve to see if you can identify the issue.
Thank you, I'm trying to help my niece out. Is it possible for the motor on the sand filter to burn out & stop pumping, yet continue to make noise like its trying?
Great video, very informative. But one question when is the best time to run the filter is it before or after or while swimming? And for how long? My swimming pool size is 5.49 meters And how ofter i need to do backwash?
I usually run it for 4 hours a day, if you have the same model there is a turn dial setting you can adjust. Normally I kick it off in the AM, or in the evening (if I shock it). Backwash until the water looks clean, usually takes less than 30 seconds, and remember to rinse afterwards.
When you run a vacuum in the pool would you suggest do it on the filter or recirculating setting I noticed on recirculating it comes out faster and really moves that vacuum

I was told that Recirculate is rarely used, but works when you won't be around the filter to backwash, but want to maintain good circulation.
Hey Angelina - I typically use recirculate in the evening after I've shocked the pool or if I've added chlorine/bromine tabs and want to keep the water moving.
Great video. So in todays case due to tropical storm I can use waste to drain the water level, right?
Thanks. I've been running my pump in filter mode but it was bogging down. The pump is putting out a lot more water after doing the backwash and rinse
Glad it helped
Thank you. Very helpful. My pump was not powerful when switched to filter. After backwashing by removing the cap, it worked.
Excellent!
Hello I just bought my first intex pool and had no idea how to run the cycles thank you for explaining it. Mine does not have a collection basket is that something I buy separate?
Awesome. Concise and under 5 minutes. Perfect youtube instructional. Thanks!
Thanks, Sunny! Appreciate your kind words, thanks for stopping by!
@@GuidingBoltGaming I have the same set up you have we're having problem with losing pressure after about 1 hour. I've changed sand cleaned out everything still loses pressure. I put it on recirculate it runs fine.
Thank you so much! I don't think my husband ever took the time to read the instruction manual and has not been functioning it properly.
Glad I could help!
@@GuidingBoltGaming Question: @3:54 seconds - Remove cap, rinse for 30 seconds, with power on or off?
Thank you, very informative. I have a saltwater system attached to my sand filter pump and find that after an hour the flow drops so that the salt water turns off. I then run on N, open the valve and it works. It seems I have a build up of air each time but cannot locate the source. Any thoughts welcome.
Let me know if you figure it out. We are having the same issue.
I did a long back wash and then a 1.5 minute rinse and it appears to be working better for now at least..
I did the same. I also removed the skimmer and the flow reducer on one side and whaddyaknow....it ran all night with no problem, saltwater system still on boost. It's been the skimmer slowing the flow this whole time. Not sure how I'll ever get the vacuum to work.
Hey Amanda - This may be helpful. th-cam.com/video/olPTv_GQ4Hk/w-d-xo.html
I will receive this pump today so I thank you for your help👍
What function do I need to use when is people enjoying the pool. And how long
And how often. Sorry if my question is dumb.
None. You are actually not supposed to use the filter when people are using. But many people say they is it anyways to filter
thank you sooo much! Our pump had weak output and this absolutely fixed the problem!!
Great to hear! Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment!
We recently bought this pump and can't figure it out. The manual doesn't answer the questions. What setting should the pump be in the clean the water? Filter? If so, it works on filter for a little bit, the flow is not strong then shuts off. What are we doing wrong? Thanks in advance.
Have u put a timer on to keep filtering for a certain amount of time?
Yes. And we even turned the timer off
How does the FP setting work when dissolving salt?
Hope this helps!
what is the purpose for "recirculate?" especially as opposed to using chlorine tablets in a floating container?
This is my question as well.
Is it better to put the clorine tab in the basket and run it on the timer or leave the clorine tab in the floaty in the pool?
It's recommended to use with a float in the pool.
Very helpful first year for a sand pump do i always keep it on filter
You'll find that most of the time you're running it on filter. I usually use recirculate in the evening after I've shocked the pool (once per week typically). Also, you'll use the backwash/rinse cycle from time to time when the tank needs a cleansing. Here's a vid on that process if you need it: th-cam.com/video/HmYlGuX5o1k/w-d-xo.html
The best video I found on this! Awesome!
Still relevant, thanks for explaining and sharing.
My pleasure!
Thank you. Now I understand my pump better
You're welcome! Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment!
How will we know when we need to change the sand? How often do you change the sand in your unit?
Between 3-5 years is when it's typically recommended to change the sand so you should be set for a while.
Thanks, where exactly need to be the pump while kids are using the pool? Thanks
I just turn it off while the kids are playing. Everything still sits in the same spot, hooked up.
Great video! I'm starting my pool again, didn't use the sand filter for 2 year. I have to do something different or just start it in filter?
How long have you had the filter? It's recommended to swap out the sand every 3-5 years. I would pop the top off the tank and inspect it to make sure everything looks good. If you didn't give it a good backwash/rinse when you stored it I would suggest doing that first to clean up the inside. Then you should be all set to start filtering.
@@GuidingBoltGaming I did it and water it is clear si I believe I'm good to go. Thanks so much!
I have one more issue, the pump doesn't have pressure when the water return to the pool. I order new sand bag just in case that it is the issue. Do you know what can be the problem? Thanks!
We just received a 2nd hand intex pump, the drain cap is missing. Suggestions on a temporary fix???
Hey Vickie - I'd just pick one up off eBay or Amazon.

Thank you so much. It’s on order.
@customvideo454 wow, who licked the red off your sucker!!! And as a matter of fact jackace, a pvc cap fit it perfectly, didn’t order one!!!
Thank you for the great video.. On the Waste setting should I be vacuuming the pool at this time also??
I always vacuumed on the recirculate or filter setting. Waste is designed to pump water/debris out of the pool and out the waste port so you would lose water very quickly using that setting.
@@GuidingBoltGaming Thank you for your response.
Thank you! This video answered all my questions.
I'm so glad!
Can you leave sand filter unit and motor connected to pool for the winter? and cover with insulation? removing all water of course?
Do you know where to bye the top ring that shows you where the filter, waste, backwash, closed, rince, rice, what ever is on there thanks
excellent video straight to the point, no long build up about your personality and yada yada.. only thing is you didn’t explain the last part about the recirculation-what is the purpose for using this setting exactly?
never mind sorry! i found a reason for it. filling my pool up but i may not be around at the moment the water reaches the intake. i want to cleanse the sludge from the sand so i’ll put it on recirculate till it reaches enough depth to be able to turn on the backwash. this way i don’t get all that sludge from the sand into the pool.
Do the rinse function after the backwash. That should clear it out.
I really appreciate what you did here.
Thanks Bud!
My pleasure!
When you are shocking or adding chemicals to the pool can you use the filter setting ??
When I shock I typically use recirculate, and if it's just chlorine tabs I keep it on filter. That being said I've done it both ways and haven't had any issues.
Do you have any advice on what to do when the 6 way Valve gets jammed and is not functioning? It depresses but I can't turn it! I've only had it for 3 weeks. What could possible be causing this!?
I am having the very same issue.. pump is brand new
Sounds like it was either assembled incorrectly, or an issue with the spider gasket.
Yes, that is possible but it typically sounds different if you're used to the sound it makes when it was working correctly.
Great video, very informative. But one question when is the best time to run the filter is it before or after or while swimming? And for how long?
My swimming pool size is 5.49 meters
And how ofter i need to do backwash?
I usually run it for 4 hours a day, if you have the same model there is a turn dial setting you can adjust. Normally I kick it off in the AM, or in the evening (if I shock it). Backwash until the water looks clean, usually takes less than 30 seconds, and remember to rinse afterwards.
When you run a vacuum in the pool would you suggest do it on the filter or recirculating setting I noticed on recirculating it comes out faster and really moves that vacuum
I typically used recirculate when vacuuming.
Great video short sweet and explains the filter function perfectly.
Thanks! 👍
This video was perfect. Thank you for taking the time to do it. Very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
