With you all the way. I do use a Vanquish 540 and really like it (but strangely didn't take to an Equinox I briefly had) but my go to machine is my old faithful C Scope 6 Mxi with 9, 11 and 14 inch coils. I've spent years learning the signals so don't need the VDI displays, depth bars etc.etc. I'm 64 now and will continue as long as I can with my CS set up. Yes its slightly heavy but a £19 Amazon sling harness cures that issue. New machines are brilliant, i totally accept that, but to me, sometimes old is best and that's where I stand 😁👍
The truth is that many good targets can be found by older detectors. The real challenge is putting your coil over the target. Good research and good permissions can outperform new technology any day.
I'd say old detectors are more relevant than target IDs. The number of vids I've watched where the detectorist swings over a target dozens of times whilst saying "Hmm, 66...oh, it's jumped to 72...back to 66, which usually means copper..." and I'm thinking "Just dig it! You're going to dig it anyway! You're going to dig every decent signal regardless of the numbers!"
Hey I started off with a C.Scope ...I.b t.r 100..and that was a long long time ago...I loved that machine,,was a good all rounder., so simple to use...only for the fact they stopped making the battery's for it.I would still have it today...love the kids Kris
I've just found my old Viking VK30. Not seen light of day for 20 years. Brushed all the cobwebs off and put a battery in and it works. Gonna take it to the beach next week and give it a swing.
Hi iv just seen this vid and absolutely loved it....looking at your settings you will be losing a hell of a lot of deptth and separation.... You had silencer on 2 ...this slows down the machine and does not allow signal bleed which effectively masks close targets and ones at depth...setting 0-1 is preferred And also you had disc in auto...this drastically reduces depth...this setting also notches coke out which can also lose good targets.disc should really be as low as possible just clicked out of auto orbit n about 6-9...hope this helps
@@Addictedtobleeps just bought a cscope cs6pi for beach and non trashy land. Also have a a cscope cs2mx red label. Which will hit 9inch down coins easily. How many of these lightweight equinox be around in 20years the older stuff is great
Thanks for the video kris, I used a C scope in the 80s and totally enjoyed using it. I'm now learning in the modern day , but it was so easy to use!!😎🐓🐓🐓🐓🇬🇧🇺🇦
So true , back in the analogue days detectorists where less Mislead for sure . Get that legend in 60 tone . Through the audio you can easily tell if good or bad target. I hardly dig much if any rubbish in that setting , had around 200 hours using it in 60 tone. #historyrevisited
I should spent the thousands and send you my Whites Coinmaster 6000/d G.E.B. that was built in 1978. That was my first machine. Strong machine if you have a strong arm. Lol!
The last time I was in England to detect, (hard to believe it's been 25 years! ) I took a Troy X-5 (19 khz). It was powered by a single 9 volt battery. The depth was incredible! I found a dozen Roman coins, a bullhead sixpence , 4 hammered coins, 2 stirrup mounts, and numerous other coins and relics. I still have it and will never let it go!
Nowadays folks look down on you unless you have the latest and greatest! My 22 year old Tesoro Cutlass II uMax still kicks butt. Other machines may be better, but for years now mine has out preformed the"better" machines.
love my minelab sovreign xs, had it since the last century, once you get to know the different tones you dont need the numbers. great on the beach as well. hip mounted now because i`m old and just a bit to heavy .just getting used to my q30, bought it after one of your reviews,I like it. happy bleeping.
Started with a sovereign elite and then a GT.Still my go to machine at the beach.I can guess very well depth/size and metal all by tones through my grey ghosts.I am going to get an 800 Nox soon but I have to find a bit more gold. The GT has paid for itself many times over.I hip mount mine also.
If you don't rely on a tid what bounce all over the show they do virtually the same thing unless you go on wet salt beaches but even the modern detectors what are single frequency can't cope either yep the Deus 1 I have tried it
Trashy fresh water with low to no viz and a lot of obstacles cables and wires can get cought on: no better machine than the 35 year old fisher 1280x! Drawback: the water proofing is crap and the service by the manufacturer horribly poor. I modified mine and now it is really water proof (built a new box and got rid of all knobs, the only remaining on/off now being a reed). That said, I would love to see a digital machine with the usability, simplicity, ruggedness and ergonomics of the old analog machines!
It doesn’t matter what detector you have they’ll all find things especially the old Ones they where quite well designed backed then if it wasn’t a hammered and looked like a love token could it be a Queen Anne there quite a scarce coin up here
Very interesting Chris, now that you've brought that up for contrast, I wonder how the G-MAX would stack up with the new Manticore Hmmm?? Cheers mate 👍👍👍😎💨🏴☠☮☮☕☕🍕
Really, really enjoyed that video. Whilst everyone else rambles about the new, the shiny and the expensive you have quite rightly gone back to the detectors that made the hobby great. Reviewing and using the older stuff would be a refreshing and highly informative genre. You do it well and realistically
Finally getting back into it after some time out, losing my twin brother who never gave up since the mid 70's has made me start again, bought a second hand quest Pro and a gmaxx for £450 now need permissions.
New detectors are so overrated, I found so much 30 years ago with an old detector....There is just so much improvement you can do. I guess separation is better(Do like the smaller and lighter part of the new generation) :))
Knowing and learning your machine is 80% of your finds. Don't switch to quick if you like your md , get finds and still have fun with it. New may be technically better, but it isn't always better for you. 😉 Don't forget the learning curve.
I believe the rush to digital in many things is flawed. Here in Australia tv converted to digital and I find weather affects it more than analog broadcast.
I always think of the digital radio in the car. It never seems to be quite in tune, and no one ever confidently masters the digital menus and settings, where the old car radios could just be tuned in by listening with your Mk1 ear'oles and twiddling a knob and a bit of string.
Definitely a face on that rubbed coin pointing right. What happened to the Megraphta spade Kris? I am taking my Garrett Ace400i to Detectival. It has found me lots of stuff in the past since 2019.
I deliberately only use analoge machines - either my Goldmaxx or the low frequency G-maxx strictly tuned and no hassle with finding the supposedly right mode or deceiving irritating numbers picked 3 silvers yesterday evening in still lasting low conductivity desert soil conditions without any problems.......one of them a english hammy and apparently my first ever love token......the most english thing one could have done to a coin !
btw, does anybody here know a good page about medieval english moneyers ? it's a Henry III (?) London mint, struck by a certain "Nichole" but it looks different then all his Henry IIIs I saw so far voided short cross, instead of a longvoided one and Henry's beard made up of strands and not pellets (also having a shaved chin section like H. II) and the legend clearly reads "NIChOLE ON LUN(D?)" instead of "OL LUND"...solved ! Henry III, class 8 b
The lead round ball looks like a homemade gun ball bullet they just didnt clip the spur off when they made it..i make them myself for black powder hunting..i may be wrong but it look.s it to me..
I've learned after the years of detecting that if you're content with your finds it doesn't matter. I buy new machines but it's more out of curiousity than to have "the best"...
There is a coil theory nothing to do with the detector digital won't get you any deeper than a analogue it's all to do with the coil used eg bigger the coil the deeper the detection cone but you lose out on small objects

Everyone should learn the ropes with an analogue machine before switching to digital.
Really, really enjoyed that video. Whilst everyone else rambles about the new, the shiny and the expensive you have quite rightly gone back to the detectors that made the hobby great. I have a pos RadioShack metal detector that I got at a garage sale ten years ago. It’s awesome.
Thanks for the old school detector video.

So true about target ID’s. I’ve been using a Deus with the remote in my pocket for years for that very reason.
Yep....best way to tune your ear. That's what I loved about using my Tesoro's

Not sure if you mean recovery speed? Watch Norfolk wolfs detector tests, nail board tests for various machines.

My vaquero still works, lighter than my simplex
It's the same with guitar amps , you can't beat the sound of a tube amp, you cam buy digital amps that model tube amps but they don't sound as good.
we do we find so many George 3rd pennies and half pennies ? did they have rubbish pockets?
One reason would be bouncing around on horses!
🤔 SHORT ANSWER: "Having an old metal detector is Better than having NO metal detector".....😡😒!!!!! (🇺🇲)
Old PI machines go just as deep on bigger targets as the newest high-priced machines.
