  • I decided to give Emi a little basic electronics troubleshooting training. Hopefully she found this interesting.
    She and I enjoy the metal detecting hobby, so she is familiar with the instrument. She has a good analytical mind, so was able to reason out the problem. I was impressed how she took this task on. Someday Emi will be heading up D-lab. These are old detectors, more than 30 years, I believe. I own a 5900/di Pro. It is the best detector I have ever used. Yes, they are a bit heavy, but the performance cant be beat. I hope you can appreciate this video. Trying to spread what knowledge I have to future generations.

    So sad that White's ceased operation in Sweet Home Oregon and Garrets acquired Whites. White was always better than Garrets and now they are gone. All due to COVID 19 Impact. It is good to see people like myself are still buying the vintage Whites Detectors and keeping them operating after decades. I own several and Garrets has agreed to serve Whites Customers needs in parts and service but how far back is not known. This video was extremely helpful, thank you.

    Way to go Emi! Keep Pop-pop on his toes. ;)
    Terri, it is great to see how much Emi loves to be around you and all your boat anchor stuff. The best part of it all is that you are showing her NOT to be afraid of all the stuff we use and how to logically think through the troubleshooting process. It gives her an even more rounded advance over most kids her age. Keep it up and hope to see many more years of D-Lab and Emi / Shortwave Girl. (Let's not leave out grandma / Marcia! :) )

    Good morning father... I think your project is excellent, very practical and direct... I had a hard time finding the circuit diagram for the Coinsmaster 6000/D series 2... one of those arrived for repair, if you could share it I would greatly appreciate your cooperation. Thank you and blessings in advance... Regards

    Sometimes we old folks under estimate children, they sure can surprise us how they learn and pick things up, yessir Emily gets it OK.
    I taught my daughter to solder when she was a young girl. She did very well her first try. Girls seem to have a better knack with handling intricate and delicate things.
    Just wait 'til she goes through your parts drawers, she will soon know a pot from a cap from a switch, or a resistor from a transistor. ICs will be like old tubes, what they are by their type codes, like a LM386 and a 6AQ5.

    Please thank Short Wave Girl for me.
    I was just about to throw away my wireless doorbell extension. I had already replaced the batteries with no effect.
    This TH-cam inspired me to buy a $6 can of electronic contact cleaner/lubricant and try one more time.
    I sprayed a couple drops on the volume control switch and worked in in (just like this video) and sure enough the doorbell extension was working again!
    Kind Regards

    Maybe her next lesson should be to learn how the circuits inside the metal detector works and how it detects metal. She is learning the art of electronics repair pretty well.

    I have a Bounty Hunter IV detector. When I turn it power knob on ,it
    bzzzzzzzzzzzs. constant, non stop no matter where it is on the knob
    selection. Discrimination is OFF and toggle is on METAL in middle. Any
    idea how to fix this??? The manual says make sure you use ALKALINE
    batteries head to toe in case. Which I did, brand new. Still doesn't fix
    the issue.

    ...but how do you clean the pushbutton in the handle?
    I've got a Coinmaster 6000/D and no matter how many times I read the instructions I can't figure out what I'm doing with it. I can't tell if I'm using it wrong or if it has some intermittent. I don't really understand the differences between the modes and what the pushbutton really does. It doesn't help that the instructions focus on coins, nails, pop can pulltabs, aluminum foil, and bottle caps, without describing what it is about the differences between these items that I could extend to detecting other things (this week, I'm looking for stainless-steel hose clamps on a plastic water pipe).

    At 13:03: You should buy a fume extractor or take solvents OUT DOORS. She's very young and you must teach her about the hazards of WD-40. WD-40 has warnings printed on the can. I find it very sad indeed that you are spraying WD-40 right into her face.

    • @dimebagriffs
      @dimebagriffs 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      chill, it's wd40, you know how many 80's 90's kids sprayed their own bike chains and are still alive today? live a little

    • @papakrampus3062
      @papakrampus3062 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      WD-40's chief component is fish oil. Sounds like the same rationale as placing Dihydrogen Monoxide on the list of banned hazardous substances while it's merely a chemical name for WATER. I'm so afraid lol!!! This statement as well as similar thought patterns reflects utter nonsense and idiocy at its best!

    • @kylesmithiii6150
      @kylesmithiii6150 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@dimebagriffs Yes indeed, they should be more afraid of being hit by lightning on their birthdays than being harmed by occasional WD-40 spraying on small parts. I know many people, including me, who used WD-40 to lubricate their bikes frequently many decades ago and were never harmed by that. BTW, how many times per week, month or year do we hear of people being intoxicated by spraying WD-40 on the the chain and gears of their garage doors while inside the garage and the door closed?
