Journey is a game I have been wanting to play forever! But don't have the proper hardware to play it on. I think I downloaded Sky for free on Switch...will have to check that out?
@@LittleBeanGreen Lol I played Journey on my iPhone 7. It was suprisingly well optimized, I don't blame you if you didn't expect it to be on mobile. I mean it's not ideal, but I'm just letting you know just in case
We're currently working on a wordless game, and our biggest inspiration to do so was LIMBO and INSIDE by Playdead. Their gameplay is, like Gris, simple platforming and clever puzzles, but you still get that feeling of tension and stakes due to the way they present the world and put you in the shoes of a child. Our gameplay is closer to the complexity of Hyper Light Drifter so I definitely gotta play it to see their approach. Great vid!!
My favorites are Unravel and its sequel by Coldwood Interactive. It's a puzzle-platformer that has you playing a little yarn figure called Yarny, collecting the memories from an old woman's past. Unravel Two has two Yarnies who follow two children, who're on the run from some shadowy adults. The stories in both are ambiguous for the most part. The only words ever expressed are at the beginnings or ends of levels and are limited to brief "words of wisdom", everything else is shown through visuals and music.
I've played the first two and I agree with both your criticisms and accolades. Now I might need to check out Hyperlight Drifer, because I really enjoy this type of game from time to time, even though I find their replayability is often lacking. In Gris' case, the fun part was missing for me by the end. I guess fun is the wrong word, more like compelling or intriguing gameplay for the length of the game. Perhaps Gris actually needed to be more linear to effectively tell the story AND be compelling to play. I want a game that has me not wanting to get out of my seat, but with Gris, I had to play it over the course of a week and was relieved to be done. Gosh did I love the art direction, though. A few other games come to mind that I'm fairly certain are wordless, though I could be wrong, including 'The Gardens Between,' 'Hob,' 'Far Lone Sails,' and 'Gorogoa,' (I can't even get past the first level on that last one though, my brain just doesn't seem compatible with that type of puzzling haha 😅). The Gardens Between was my first dialogue and narration-free game and I remember it feeling so much more powerful and bittersweet for having chosen that direction.
Hm I've never heard of the Gardens Between, may need to check that out. I was going to try Far Lone Sails but heard similar things where it just kind of comes off as boring, so I never did. Hyper Light Drifter is a hard game (for me anyway) and more akin to A Link To The Past, but I actually had a lot of fun with it.
@@LittleBeanGreen Yeah, Gardens Between is a great little game with intruiging mechanics and it was really touching! I am admittedly terrible at A Link to the Past, so I'll check out a review for Hyper Light Drifter to see if I think I can muster my skills hehe
I love these sorts of games.
Journey, Sky, Little Nightmares, Inside, and limbo are also some games in this category

@@chrono9503 That's crazy....yeah I'll find some way to play it on the big screen rather than squinting at a phone!

Thanks!
Great video man! Would love to see some longer videos like this
I'll see what I can do! Only so much time to play games, write scripts, and edit videos...😅thanks for checking it out!
