My wife and I just got our first Jeep last weekend. I’m glad there is good beginner trails and camping spots to get our feet wet in the overlanding/off roading world. Thanks for sharing!
This is amazing and inspiring. Making my list and plans for a trip with just the pickup truck and no camper. Thanks for the step by step in everything. Especially the food prep and cooking.
So much fun, my face hurt from laughing so hard. Thanks for hosting us at such a fantastic location. We definitely want to come back and hopefully see you all sooner rather than later. We need to do an AZ trip when the weather cools a bit. 🤜💥🤛
I'm glad to hear you guys all enjoyed your trip. I know it was a long drive and we appreciate having you guys come out to visit. Goose and I are anxious to do it again also real soon.
Oh man what an awesome weekend it was brother thanks for hosting up in Big Bear. It was definitely a great time with old and new friends lots of laughs and amazing food. Looking forward to the next adventure with everyone again 🤙🏻🤙🏻

Man. What a nice spot, after seeing this video definitely makes me want to explore that area as I'm in the high desert. Also cool to see you and your fam having that quality time👌🏼 happy travels as I'm off to Bryce canyon this weekend, doing some boondocking in my Astro camper van. Cheers
Hi Paul - Yah...you are right up the street...Just come up the back way and hit Holcomb Valley Road and find your camp! Have fun up in Bryce Canyon. Happy Trails and safe travels.
Thanks for the great memories from someone that grew up in Chino and camped most of the places that you have shown,I have not been back to California since 1991 and things have sure enough changed,,Would like to make a trip back out west to join you one weekend camping
Juan - You are a great supporter of my channel and I appreciate it. Thanks for always leaving some kind words. God Bless you and your family as well!!! Happy Trails
You should have named this video "Brussels Sprouts Gate" :D I was looking for a utensil roll to hang for the Outback Adventures table and boom you showed it! On our last trip we pulled up to get gas and to make egg salad sandwiches for lunch and it was real inconvenient to open the cutlery case because our "sink" and cutting boards sits on top and had to rearrange everything. Don't want to pull "everything" out when I just needed a spoon and a knife. Thanks for the great videos and useful ideas and tips!
Nice video.. love how compact and efficient ur gear/supplies are! Impressive! I've been blessed to call Big Bear my home for 40+ years. I've explored all the surrounding peaks thru out the years but Holcomb has always been a fav! I know of another pretty epic camping spot not far from there.. 😀
Yah...that was a highlight while I was editing..I was cracking up hearing them. They're such great people and it brings me comfort knowing that they now have 3 lbs of Brussel Sprouts that they need to try to use before they go bad at home...🤣 🏠
So excited u shared this spot. We usually go all out glamping and RV and campsites. We just got a 4Runner and getting it ready for dispersed camping so this will be different. I think the hardest part for me will be not bringing everything including the kitchen sink. 😅
Nice video... thanks for the info on the camp table and solar panel. I was down in Riverside for the weekend when the Apple fire broke out, really sucks to see that happen in a nice area. I plan to share this video with my Son, he always thinks we need to find a campground, you showed there are some nice spots out there if we explore a little, thanks.
Thanks for the kind words and taking the time to leave a comment. There are a ton of great camping areas in the area. Half the fun is finding one....Happy Trails!
Great spot bro. I was up on 2N11 at a pullout by lookout point. Love your videos since my location is perfect for where you generally camp and explore. I just started. Two wheel drive Canyon with RTT. Added some tires that bite. Your videos inspire. I found a great site in Mammoth that will hold 4-5 rigs easy. Fun stuff. Thanks again.
EXCELLENT! it is Awesome to see trails and camping so close to home! I am in the Thousand Oaks CA area, and my little CJ5 would do perfect for such local trips! Well Done!
Great video. We’re incredibly lucky to have such great areas to enjoy close by. The problem I’ve been seeing lately is that people aren’t packing out their trash. When I ran Sherman Pass and Monache a few weekends ago the campsites were trashed! I packed out way more than I packed in for sure.
How much clearance do you think you need to get into Monache? I really want to go there but worries we don't have enough clearance on our 4x4 sprinter.
@@HampstarWheel I've seen Subaru Outback's and Forrester's out there so I'm going to guess ground clearance isn't going to be the issue. More than likely it will be the height and length that will cause problems. The initial drive into the meadow should be doable but it gets tight, short, and narrow when trying to get to the end of the trail. That would be the area I'd be concerned with. You could always go with a smaller rig and drive it with them to see if it's worth trying. You could also bring a bike and recon it that way. It's definitely worth exploring either way.
I was up there that same weekend, camped on the south side of the lake, for the cooler temps and more shade, but wheeled on the north-side where you camped on sunday. I could not believe how many people were there camping, people right on top of each other at the yellow-post sites. Seeing that many people still camping above Fawnskin, sunday morning is unbelievable.
Weather was great wasn't it!?!?. All these campers are the result of COVID. People aren't comfortable getting on planes or going out in public places. This makes the most sense. On one hand it does make it more difficult and crowded, but on the other I love seeing people enjoying the outdoors and nature. My only hope is that every camper new and experienced leaves their campsite cleaner than the found it. Happy Trails Eric!!!
I camp in the Smoky Mountains and I can’t even leave a plastic gas container outside my small camper because bears will take it off. I’m headed out West this January to camp for a few months and everywhere out there looks like Bear Country.
Nice setup. I need to take my Tacoma up there and explore the Holcomb area. Was up there doing some motorcycle camping a few weeks ago. Would love to find some dispersed camping so I can avoid busy campgrounds. Just subbed!

Yes I do...I usually will warm it up and then add the food. And when Im done depending on how dirty it is, I can sometimes just use some water and wipe it down...other times like in this video I will use a plastic scraper to get the stuck food off, and then add water and steam it off...And then wipe down with some oil to keep the seasoning fresh..Thanks watching and leaving a comment. Most of the time it is mounted on my Vector bar located inside of the Jeep. The exterior mounted videos is also used using the suction cup mount. Not ideal, but nice to get different angles once in a while.
Wanna come up from San Diego but was told all camping in massive outdoor areas was closed and it's safer to stay as tightly crammed together as possible
We did our first exploration/scouting in Big Bear last weekend and all we found was dusty desert-like areas without nearly enough trees. Without giving away your secret spots, any recommendations on general areas to look or FS roads to take? My daughters are big fans of mountain forests but not big fans of dusty scrub & deserts.
What kind of grill is that ? When I go motocamping 🏍💨🏕 I use the same Coleman burner. Great spot , Big Bear 🐻 is a beautiful place not far from the house, great getaway.
Thanks for the info on the compact camping gear. I love the adventures you and your fam take on. I’m interested in something like the Bugout 130. I don’t have a secondary battery on my vehicle and would like to run a small fridge through cigarette port while out camping. Will the Bugout 130 connect directly to my SUV battery and keep it charged while running the fridge?
Hi Jesse...To use the Bugout 130, you will need a controller that takes the power from the panel and converts it to a more acceptable charge to the battery. Once you have those two items, you are good to go! Happy Trails
Glad I found your channel! We just went last week up and down the 395 looking for places to camp. With Covid, freezing temps (no fires allowed!), and all of the CG's closed it wasn't easy finding spots, but they're out there. I'm going to scour your videos for ideas - really liking the idea of Monache Meadows (fly fishing!). With the lower Kern so infested with druggies we really want to start exploring the 4x possibilities. Have you ever considered linking your equipment through an affiliate program? I know I'm looking at purchasing much of the gear you showcased here. Subbed.
Hi D9. I'm glad you found my channel too. Lots of ideas in my vid's. I'm confident you will find plenty of areas. I have given it some thought. I've got lots of folks asking where to buy some of the gear we use. I just don't have a clue on how to get that affiliate acct going. Maybe one day I'll find some time to figure it out. I appreciate your subscription. Happy Trails!!!
@@HampstarWheel You know. that looked very nice, and I know it has great reviews. We haven't stayed there but drove through. There's river access. Just make sure if you're driving back down the mountain toward Bakersfield I wouldn't recommend driving after dark - I've always been a confident driver but I legitimately was terrified (in my higher-center-of-gravity vehicle, mind you) driving down at night. Might be different with a regular sedan or lower SUV. I think Keyesville looks really family friendly - we intended to go to Black Gulch through Keyesville to disperse camp, but ended up going way up to Sherman Pass for the last few times we went up there.
When camping I will take microwave in a bag rice, prep it at home, and then all I have to do is heat it up in camp. Super simple. My camp cooking is far less intense than yours. I am impressed with the skottle, however the price is very expensive for what it is.
Thanks Eric....Your ranking order is right on point...although for the purposes of not sleeping outside, I'll have to say Family before Sierra...LOL. 😝 😆
395jnky use one of the coffee pots from grandpas days, fill it with water just to the spout. Bring that to a nice rolling boil. Add you favorite coffee grinds straight to the water. I like a good sumatra and add about a cup-1/2 of it, i like my coffee strong. Trick is to pour cold water down the spout and around edge of coffee pot, that makes the grinds drop. Serve up in a cup, that easy. Just like your coffee paint peeler strong! 🤣
Hi, I race downhill mountain biking and have been worried about finding a camp site this weekend and many more to come. So the name of this rd is Holcomb valley trail? Is pretty much any spot you can pull off the road ok to camp at? Do you need an adventure pass as well ? Thanks a lot man this definitely assured my 2wd truck can make it up there
No issues with bears...but we still bring the trash and food inside the Jeep every night...I'm more concerned with critters and coyotes making a mess while we sleep.
I love Holcomb so much, but we were broken into between the 17th and the 20th, be cautious and stay safe. You an see satellites at night moving across the sky
Good video and all but if you are going to share your camping adventures it will be nice to tell people where this is located so they can also visit , is not like they all are going to camp at the same time. Anyway I like your videos man god bless.
Hi Guillermo. I provide just enough info to get everyone in the right vicinity. From there with just a tiny bit of effort you all can find some great sites as well. Thanks for the comment.
I'm headed up to big bear in two weeks. We'll be staying near the village. Question is there any trails for a stock jeep near by to take the family on a ride? Thanks again for the great vid.
All of the fire-roads south of the Village behind Snow Summit, you can do with a stock jeep. On the north-side above Fawnskin, do Holcomb Valley Rd and Gold Fever Trail.
Hi Kevin...Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. There are so many easy trails in Big Bear. Start with Holcomb Valley Road...It is a very very easy trail...and explore some of the off shoots...Lots of easy off-roading on and off this trail...Have fun!!!
Hi and thanks for the comment. I'm glad to hear our content inspires you. I don't share coordinates only because most every place I go to is found on our own and we enjoyed every part of finding our camps. For us, half the fun is wheeling and seeking a campsite...By not sharing the spots, my hope is it will encourage everyone to get out and explore! Happy Trails....
I suppose it could be, but I would suggest turning it upside down where the Tembo Tusk emblem wouldn't be impacted by knife scars. Its general purpose if for a table top in the lowest setting especially...a place you can put your beverage when sitting down...
Hey Daniel, this is totally random but was one of your guests there named Jose? Pretty sure he used to be my bother’s neighbor in TN. If so, tell him hey for me bc he was a big help while I was building up my 2012 JK. I’m almost positive it was him bc he was building a custom trailer that looked just like that right before he moved to CA. Anyway, had to comment bc it was blowing my mind LOL!
Upshot Mill 10-4 brother that was me and thanks for the kind words. How’s everything going for you down in TN? Say hello to your brother for me aswell. It’s so cool that you’re following Daniel he definitely a good down to earth person with and awesome family that we consider real good friends.
Overlanding_4_ Sanity , Jose! So wild! I remember you telling me you were friends with some of the channels I follow. Awesome to see you are out overlanding in CA. Yes, totally dig Daniel’s channel. BTW, would love to see a rig walk around with your Jeep and new custom trailer, looked BA from the shots on this vid. I finished my build this year, been on 3 trips so far and we’re loving it. Tommy is now dipping his toes into the world haha! We had a big trip planned for overlanding our West but obviously that got busted. I’ll hit you up when we go out next year and hopefully we can meet up! Hope life is treating you well and with any luck, we’ll meet up on a trail in the future 😎🤙
What a small world. I'm so glad the two of you got a chance to reconnect from this video. Maybe next trip we can do a walk around on Jose's rig! And yes...it is BA! Happy Trails UpShot!
395jnky Thank you brother!!! I actually got back from the weigh station and I thought she was over weight but she’s not she weight in a whopping 900lbs empty and I’m guessing loaded up she’ll be under 1,500lbs which is and will be on the lighter side and I’m happy with those numbers. 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Hey any tips I’m going on a road trip in 3 weeks all California, going hit Utah, neveda, Texas New Orleans Miami. What campijg and road trip essentials you recommend. I’ll be camping on my Tacoma 2004 camper shell
I'm coming next weekend (Labor Day weekend) from AZ to camp and crawl the 3 BOH trails. Any advice on how to find trails? I'll likely want to camp Friday night towards the east side of the lake and then Saturday and Sunday on the west side. Since I'll be using a RTT, I won't be leaving a tent to 'reserve' a spot when doing trails so I'll need to hunt 3 times for spots. Thoughts / advice?

I think i figured out where he was, he mentioned in another reply it was about 20 minutes from the lake, and if you scout around on google maps, you can see potential places listed on it.
@@CrossFitMehedi He's mentioned in past videos that he likes to stay at yellow post camp sites, there are a handful on the north side of the lake, if you look at the satellite view, you can probably figure out which one it is based upon the scenery in the video.
Does anyone know if you absolutely have to be on a yellow post camp site to disperse camp in big bear? Or are you allow to pull up at an area that looks like a campground that is NOT a yellow post site and call it camp and follow campfire permit rules?
Thanks Carlos....We were still quite a bit of distance from the lake...It probably took a good 20 minutes to get to the lake from our campsite...Take care
Living in the area, it would be nice if you also mentioned no fires are allowed when camping like this. Might seem like common sense, but this year alone Foresty found over 200% more illegal campfires in the area. Locals would appreciate those promoting these types of activities do it responsibly. And obviously to follow the "Leave No Trace" concept.
You’re lucky to have a wife that has the same interest as you. I have 13 acres with a cabin on it in upstate NY and my wife never came there with me. Needless to say - after being married for 40 years, she divorced me. I’m living alone, but stress free.

395jnky thanks for reaching back out.
Which brand is that table at 4:45. Great video as always.
Thanks Issac. It is made by Mountain Summit Gear. It is the heavy duty roll-top table. Take care!
Ayeee love these keep it up and keep camping 🏕💪
More to come!
Have you been to Keyesville disperses on the Kern? Is it overrun? I have three littles so I'm a bit worried about that aspect.
Any chance you can reveal this camping location now? Like all your videos. It will be my first time camping in big bear. Thank you
When camping I will take microwave in a bag rice, prep it at home, and then all I have to do is heat it up in camp. Super simple. My camp cooking is far less intense than yours. I am impressed with the skottle, however the price is very expensive for what it is.
Another great video in a beautiful spot. The wife and I are intrigued by the paper towel holder.. Where did you get it? Thinkin we really need one
Thanks Rick. That paper towel holder is from the one and only Harbor Freight!..LOL. Definitely works well with the steel bumper.
@@395jnky Well that was not near as complicated as I'd imagined Hahaha Thanks
Another great video, thank you! . Ranking order: 1. Sierra 2. Family 3. Skottle/Food Experience 4. Belle 5. Location
Thanks Eric....Your ranking order is right on point...although for the purposes of not sleeping outside, I'll have to say Family before Sierra...LOL. 😝 😆
@@395jnky LOL, Perfect!
I need to teach you my cowboy coffee! That grill looks bomb!!
I heard of such coffee. I'm all ears.
Hey Daniel,beautiful trip,keep good content.
Thank you! Will do!
@@395jnkyDo you like to test our DIY scan tool and use it in video,Not sure how to contact you
Another great video Any coordinates you could share? Keep up the great work.
Hi, I race downhill mountain biking and have been worried about finding a camp site this weekend and many more to come. So the name of this rd is Holcomb valley trail? Is pretty much any spot you can pull off the road ok to camp at? Do you need an adventure pass as well ? Thanks a lot man this definitely assured my 2wd truck can make it up there
Do you happen to have a link where I can buy the large plate shaped grill that you are using?
Have you had any issues with bears in Big Bear. Do you just leave all the food and trash in the jeep overnight?
No issues with bears...but we still bring the trash and food inside the Jeep every night...I'm more concerned with critters and coyotes making a mess while we sleep.
Nice idea with shrimp stir fry. Who made your camp chairs?
HI Gregory - The camp chairs are made by Kermit Chairs...Go check out their website. Really great and compact chairs! Take care
395jnky Thank you! Great videos. All the best.
I love Holcomb so much, but we were broken into between the 17th and the 20th, be cautious and stay safe. You an see satellites at night moving across the sky
Holcomb is a great area...Lots of trees. That sucks about getting broken into. Happy Trails
Great video , do you mind sharing coordinations for this site ?
Awesomeness!!
Thanks Marco. I can't wait to see you out on the trail soon with the Chuckwagon. Congrats!
No brussel sprouts?? Camp revolt! 😆 Great video dude 👍
Thanks...
You can deter predators from entering your camp site with a portable electric bear fence. Small kit that brings huge peace of mind.
Your camping trips look so fun! I always get inspired by your videos. Do you ever post any gps tracks?
Hi and thanks for the comment. I'm glad to hear our content inspires you. I don't share coordinates only because most every place I go to is found on our own and we enjoyed every part of finding our camps. For us, half the fun is wheeling and seeking a campsite...By not sharing the spots, my hope is it will encourage everyone to get out and explore! Happy Trails....
How can you tell if the land is BLM?
How difficult is it usually to find a spot here?
All depends. Try to get there during the week and you'll be good. Weekends are hit and miss...
WHEN UNCOVERED THE SKOTTLE TO MAKE BREAKFAST WAS THAT A CUTTING TEMPO TUSK CUTTING BOARD ON TOP ?
I suppose it could be, but I would suggest turning it upside down where the Tembo Tusk emblem wouldn't be impacted by knife scars. Its general purpose if for a table top in the lowest setting especially...a place you can put your beverage when sitting down...
We have to know where we can get that grill you made the steak and rice on please?!
In California, I would recommend anywhere at higher elevations off of the 395 from Bishop North to Bridgeport. Have a fun and safe trip. Happy Trails
How do you like always cooking the meals? I am a chef and sometimes I just want someone to cook for me…
How do you know you can camp there? How do you know if that land is not owned and you're not trespassing?
My GAIA GPS has overlays that shows where you are and where your are not allowed to camp.
What rice brand are those? They seem easy to prepare.
They are Minute Rice in the plastic cups..Super easy
hi...love this vid! what's the name and where can i find the WOK style grill you used in this vid??
Hi J.M. - The is called a skottle made by Tembo Tusk. You can get one at www.tembotusk.com. Highly recommend...Happy Trails
DM me on IG.
Did you hit any traffic/road closures due to the fires?
Hi Robert - No...we actually weren't impacted. I was concerned coming down the 38 we would, but it was smooth sailing...Take care
Did you happen to have the grid coordinates for that cramping site
Hi Cesar - I don't share coordinates only because most every place I go to is found on our own and we enjoyed every part of finding our camps. For us, half the fun is wheeling and seeking a campsite...By not sharing the spots, my hope is it will encourage everyone to get out and explore! Happy Trails....
I think i figured out where he was, he mentioned in another reply it was about 20 minutes from the lake, and if you scout around on google maps, you can see potential places listed on it.
@@msimcox2 any more clues? Spent 4hours last weekend searching with no luck.
You can pull up. I've been visited by sheriff's while i was camping and they assured me that it was allowed.
Please can you send me the coordinate for this campsite I always follow you to your channel and I'm a subscriber, thank you for your help God bless!
Any GPS coordinates you can share?
Can you say more about the directions or coordinates of the particular campsite.
This campsite is one of many off of Holcomb Valley Trail. Have fun!!!
How far are you from the lake? Awesome video bro! Thanks for the info, beautiful family and friends stay safe.
Thanks Carlos....We were still quite a bit of distance from the lake...It probably took a good 20 minutes to get to the lake from our campsite...Take care
mamagoose was getting jiggy with it in the background. lol
Right...LOL
Good video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Living in the area, it would be nice if you also mentioned no fires are allowed when camping like this. Might seem like common sense, but this year alone Foresty found over 200% more illegal campfires in the area. Locals would appreciate those promoting these types of activities do it responsibly. And obviously to follow the "Leave No Trace" concept.
Would bears try to get into that fridge?
Hi i like your videos can you tell me a little be how to get to that campside
You’re lucky to have a wife that has the same interest as you. I have 13 acres with a cabin on it in upstate NY and my wife never came there with me. Needless to say - after being married for 40 years, she divorced me. I’m living alone, but stress free.
As long as you're enjoying life, that's all that matters Junior! Happy Trails!!!
You got your sanity and you kept your land. Most men can't say that.
