- We discuss the Eurovision 2021 Semi-Final 2 split results, looking at discrepancies with the jury vote and public vote. Switzerland’s Gjon’s Tears won overall, while Denmark’s Fyr Og Flamme just missed out on qualification (despite making the Top 10 with the public). Finland's Blind Channel won the televote, while Switzerland's Gjon's Tears won the jury vote.

They're a Jury. They need to judge it for its artistic purposes as well as musicality. They can't be worried about how they may appear to others when they have a job to do and they're employed to do it. If you're so afraid or worried about the opinions and thoughts of people, being a part of a music Jury isn't for you. Simple.

I agree. The point about the Danish song "feeling local" as mentioned by William ... - hey, jurors, if you see that as a weakness, you should quit! In fact, I don't agree at all with William's repeated claim that juries are there to support the radio friendly songs! Where did that opinion come from? (P.S.: The Danish jury gave Albania - a very local and not radio friendly song - seven points!)
The juries are mostly made of people who aren't even recognized as musical specialists. That was the case for multiple countries. It's just random people whos opinion is valued more than the entire Europe, and that's that. Polish Jury trading 12 points with San Marino lol
Is that even a thing? I feel that it's just an excuse. Denmark 2021 was cheesy, and it embraced it cheesiness, not exactly jury friendly material, and Iceland 2019 was the opposite of a radio friendly song. This reason sounds like total nonsense.
When comparing Georgia's semi final results to Czech Republics, it seems to me that they forget that Benny sounded AWFUL and out of breath as well as singing it off key at times. It was all over the place and in the end sounded different to the studio version which I think is what the public responded to more.
The fact that Tornike sang the song with a strong vocal, akin to the vocals on the studio version probably sold it a little more. Plus, he made his stage seem intimate. It was just him after all, but he made you forget just how large the stage is. With Benny, the stage looked huge and the dancers didn't really help to hide that, so I can honestly understand why Georgia ended up claiming more points in the public vote. I was pretty disappointed with Bennys performance
As a studio track, Czech Republic was my winner this year. Still, I agree 100% with your analysis. Even if I could have voted in semi final 2, I don't think I would've voted for Omaga, sadly.

I watched this with my friend group and they were all genuinely rooting for Denmark to get in. They absolutely loved that song, they enjoyed the kitsch, the dancing, the song was catchy and they wanted that “Eurovision” song.
They announced both the semi-final 1&2 televote winners as last , causing little heart attacks all over Europe lol
Blind Channel did so well with the televoters winning their semifinal and coming 4th in the grand final, I think they could’ve win the televote if there wasn’t Måneskin🤘🏻
I guess Switzerland won the 2nd semi final and malta the first

I don't necessarily think that people had to make a specific choice between Italy and Finland. Especially because they are actually a very different kind of rock. They could also vote for both of them at the same time and this is what many people have done 😁

What is even more bizarre about Georgia is that they got points from six countries with the televote and bear in mind they had literally ZERO neighbours in the semi-final..
It seems that some people actually liked the song.

The performance was flawless tho. His vocals were strong and on point, and the setting was very intimate, which fits perfectly with the song.
Nothing bizarre about it, it's a lovely soothing song and he's a great singer
georgia’s live really elevated in my opinion i actually really liked it when i watched it so i’m not suprised it got some televote points
San Marino is definitely a strange case. When the grand final results were announced I wasn't that surprised tbh. I never expected the juries to particularly support this and while it's televote friendly in theory, coming after Italy didn't do it any favors. Måneskin felt like the natural climax of the show and even I, who wasn't watching their performance for the first time, couldn't pay much attention to either Sweden or San Marino afterwards. They were just lackluster in comparison.
But I did expect San Marino to have got a good result in the semi. That obviously wasn't the case so it's not the running order that killed it on the gf as I originally thought. The public didn't connect with it at any point. Every year there's this fan favorite song that ends up flopping with a general audience and apparently this track was Adrenalina in 2021.
The thing is Sweden did ok in final televote - 10th or 11th depending on how you factor in ties but it was a change of pace after Italy and people like my mum who Italy weren't their cup of tea loved Sweden. San Marino had their thunder well and truly stolen. It wasn't my cup of tea to begin with and I haven't a Scooby who Flo Rida is.
You should be more open minded to the opinions of the public. We’re millions voting, there is a reason we prefer certain songs over others.
In my opinion, Georgia was way better than Austria and the Czech Republic. It was relaxing and somewhat cathartic, though not enough to make the final. Austria was a cheesy ballad we have heard a million times before and Benny stopped singing at certain times, the vocals weren’t there and the staging was terrible. It’s not just about diasporas or population sizes (though I know they play a role).
Moldova still cheated 🤷♂️ televoting 12s don't just magically turn into 0s by the time the final rolls around

But in the final some countries that give them 12 doesn’t given any points
Also, the last time, I believe, a song got that many 12 points in a semifinal was Portugal in 2017 (and Bulgaria same year, I think).
Not only didn't gave them televote points in the final, but ranked them near the bottom ! And let's not start to talk about the corrupted juries😅
4 out of the 8 didn't give her any televoting points in the final and those that did were San Marino (which doesn't have it's own population to vote) Czech Republic (which always seems kind of suspicious in the televoting results), Portugal (which has historically given Moldova high points) and France. That is very, very suspicious.
I’m sorry but Moldova qualifying was a crime the song was ok the staging a bit meh for me Natalia sounded like she ran a marathon or was running away from Kirkorov. I’m sad Denmark didn’t make it through because of the juries ☹️

No, Moldova's televoting results are absolutely sus. The excuse of "Romania expatriates" fails when you consider that Romania failed to qualify due to the televoters and if it's such a big hit in Russia, Greece and Bulgaria, then why is it that Greek and Bulgaria voters didn't give it any points in the final? Not to mention that 4 out of the 8 countries that give them 12 points from the televote in the semi gave them nothing in the final. Even Malta, with its stark difference between the semi and final televote, still got some points from the countries that gave them points. There is no reason that a song like Moldova, which barely finished on the left-hand side of the scoreboard, should have 8 countries giving them 12 points.

Greece gave Moldova 12 points in the semi final but she was ranked out of the top 20 in the final
i remember EST also gave in semi to Moldova 12 in televotes and in final about nothing.

Looking at the score distribution, the biggest surprise was Moldova getting 8 TIMES 12 points in televote. Unbelievable...i like her and the song but that is not understandable(voice shaky except long note, staging not that special) there were 17 countries and many fan favs like Iceland, Findland etc. and then she gets 8 times 12 points???? Lol

I personally liked it but I do feel like the votes from Moldova were rigged... They seemed so off and it was always the countries in which the composers had a connection with the country.

I think all countries should invite famous producers from as many European countries as possible so that their respective entries end up high on the jury scoreboard xD It's hilarious that juries give points to some songs only because they are good with the songwriters or producers of those songs. There needs to be transparency in the jury vote. Each juror should at least leave a justification for their scores, because it's completely unfair that 5 jurors are given such power... and not to mention that these jurors are very often far from being "professional."

Bulgaria gave Moldova 12 points, because Kirkorov is Bulgarian-born, and then Russia giving Moldova points isn’t surprising either, since Kirkorov is a Russian citizen. This was def bias voting.
It has nothing to do with being a commercial pop song.
Russia was in Semi1, they could not vote.
Priya referred to the grand final results. Totally agree about corrupt votes from Bulgaria and Russia for Moldova. Totally given by “professional” corrupt juries to kirkorov.
Pandatrix True, but I brought up Russia, because William spoke about the publicity/promotion event Kirkorov and Natalia held in Russia before Eurovision, to promote the song.
How much was Moldova really popular in Bulgaria Wiilliam? They received 0 points from the televote at the semi and the final! But at the same time our jure played verry well with Kirkorov and Greece and gave 12 pointst to Moldova at the sami and the final.
Czech Republic's final performance - the vocals were waaaay disappointing. The energy level in the official video vs his live performance was a huge discrepancy. He sounded like he was struggling. Not surprised other less exciting songs did better, their vocals were better if not as "exciting". .....

I investigated the Czech result a bit and it seems like he was really close of getting a point from two countries. He finished 11th in Albania and Iceland. However, he was dead last in seven countries :(

A couple of comments:
I was really surprised that Moldova made it to the Finals, but then when I saw Kirkorov's name associated with it I understood better. It's a good song but there were stronger songs. Also, I loved Georgia's entry much more than the entries of the Czech Republic and especially Austria which I found to be repetitive and annoying. Georgia's entry was quite moving! It's a risky kind of entry at Eurovision but for me it worked very well. No surprise for me that Georgia did better in the televote than the Czech Republic and Austria, even if the margins were small.
I'll say that campaign doesn't always give you points. In Latvia there were maanny Malta adverts but Latvia didn't really gibe Destiny points
Moldova must be proud of her , when the mic dropped , she handled it very professionally.

Yeah especially Estonia imo. Considering Finland was in the same semi and had a song that won the televote, I would be dead sure the Estonian public would give Blind Channel their 12 points. Even Look Away that got last in semi in 2019 got 12 from them

@@stevenj9697 In Portugal's case its because there is a considerable Moldovan diaspora in Portugal (30 thousand) + the other eastern diasporas in Portugal that voted for them
Not a single comment on Estonia in the video or comments, and that about tells you why it didn’t go through. (I like the song and Uku’s voice, but it just didn’t stand out with what others brought to the stage that night. :/)
It was my third favourite this year but the running spot killed it and it just came pretty unforgettable the staging just didn’t stand out

Georgia's song was more pleasant to listen to for me than the Czech Republic entry. "Omaga" was one of the most annoying songs this year for me, and the semifinal performance wasn't very good.

Serbia were my favourite until the final, when i reluctantly had to accept there were better acts 😖 however , loco loco is still my most played song on Spotify and those girls had the best stage presence
On the one hand, it does make sense that musicality and singing abilities are favoured by the juries. On the other hand, if you think about it - is it fair that classic ballads, entries with opera elements, and similar acts, always get a lot of jury votes, while an entry that is based on 80's music is bound to get few?
I had voted for Czech rep and also Georgia - same count of calls. I must say, I thought Czech would get more points (but I also voted for Portugal and Iceland)

Having watched both semi-final reaction vids I have learnt you need a good quality song, with a performance and staging that serves to elevate that song. Reassuring it is still a song contest at its core despite everything else going on, which is often critiqued in the modern era.
Very sad for Czech Republic, an absolutely amazing song. It will forever be in my top 5 overall of 2021.

Moldova's mic drop happened in the the GRAND FINAL and NOT in the SEMI.
I think the intense advertising campaign and Flo Rida backfired on San Marino. I think a lot of people want to watch the show and decide that night. I also think the audience doesn't want established top tier artiss at ESC, especially if they're American.

Portugal was one of the biggest embarassement to Wiwibloggs this year. After a huge campaing against the song, you had to swallow the result, both good with jury and televote.

Yes, the televote felt like a zig zag of fro one extreme to the next. They made Italy win.
I know its late lmao but i actually kinda understand why Georgia did okay with the televote, my country Portugal gave them 3 points (the most Georgia received along with Estonia, Poland and Latvia but maybe bc of diaspora) and our population loves those quiet, simple ballads.

San Marino's song is a hit, but, on stage, it looked like a school's concert. Saying that, it was more watchable that Iceland's debacle. (playful and quirky = woeful)

Based on the performance, I was suprised that Finland only came 5th in Semi and 6th in the Final. Blind Channel should of been Top 3 in both, switching Bulgaria in the Semi for Finland, and Switzerland in the Grand Final. San Marino deserved a Top 13 in the Grand Final switching it for Moldova.

17:23 I'm sorry, but this was an extremely weak semi final. I was watching the semi with my friend group, and we got genuinely bored while watching it. The stakes were just so low. To contrast this, semi final 1 was REALLY interesting and engaging.
In this semi, we had a lot of bad vocals (Poland, Czech Republic, Moldova, heck even georgia was off a lot)
literally 4 ballads in a row in the running order (Georgia into Albania into Portugal into Bulgaria if I remember correctly)
There were like 8 songs that were safe bets for the final, leaving only 2 potential wild cards (Where in semi 1 it was literally a blood bath)

The last song of the night was literally Denmark. It doesn't feel satisfying.
A lot of bad stagings happened (San Marino, Poland's cringy camera grab, whatever happened to Latvia feat. really weird gold + emerald combo)

Terrible outfit day (Senhit, Benny, Denmark, Latvia and oh god why did Rafał take off the sun glasses)
Sorry, the semi was just boring. I was never bored watching Eurovision before, but this time - I just was. It felt extra unfair too, cause you just KNOW that Croatia or Romania would most likely qualify had they replaced ANY country in this semi. The semi finals feel unbalanced and a lot of people just confirm this claim, semi 2 was just boring in comparison.
Semi 2 was almost torture to make it through. Up until Iceland, the songs were either incredibly boring (Estonia, Austria) or had bad vocal performances (Czechia, Poland, even San Marino and Greece). Even when things got "better" we still had borderline qualifiers Albania and Serbia, Georgia, which doesn't need explanation, and Bulgaria and Switzerland, which are both solid songs, but don't boring in a boring semi. Denmark came off as being great because it was an upbeat song with a great performance, despite its cheesiness. Yeah, he's talking out of his ass.
I voted for Georgia!!! Tornike was vocally better than Benny and that song, it makes me feel something. At the end of the day, he looked like someone who is in a big company with his girl and he steals the karaoke mike to dedicate a song to his girlfriend. This was sooo touching. And honestly, I was not a big fan of it in the beginning. Tornike also looked very depressed even in the "Red" carpet even. Why? Man, you are at EUROVISION! Even if you know you won't qualify, this is YOUR moment!
I think that Fyr og Flamme deserved so much better. They have a great dynamic and humour. Even though it was only them on the main stage they filled it. They definitely deserved to qualify over Albania. The song is just more radio friendly and they had a better stage presence (especially Jasper) compared to Anxhela Peristeri. Personally I don’t think it deserved such a low result with the juries as it was feel good and happy and radio friendly in certain countries that have a high Danish population (aside from Denmark). But the only things that were not the best was their vocals as in some parts Jasper Groth sounded really off pitch and the backing vocals were not the best compared to other countries and again Danish is not really a widely spoken language and the jurors probably would have been slightly embarrassed if they had voted for it. It’s message would have also been something the juries would have adored and voted for.
Tbh the weakest link in San Marino’s entry this year was Senhit herself. She can’t sing well, she can’t dance, she has borderline rhythm abilities, her outfit was not pretty...you can’t expect miracles with such a weak base to begin with
