    I learned to type on an IBM back in high school, in 1987. It turns out I've forgotten a few things about using those incredible machine. I just recently purchased off of eBay a vintage xerox 6020 memory writer. Very interesting. Disabled now, but I want to see if I can beat my time of 98 wpm, maybe 100, or something like that. Thanks.

      I do sell a lot of typewriters, all my typewriters are reconditioned, but only ship portables.
      IBM selectrics are too risky & expensive ( especially internationally) to ship and impossible to do any warranty work long distance
      And with those selectrics being 40 yrs old with 2800 parts, things can go wrong quickly

      10 pitch, Pica, is larger spacing @ 10 spaces per inch
      12 pitch, Elite, is smaller spacing @ 12 spaces per inch
      10 pitch ball will have larger type, set to match 10 pitch print spacing will be standard
      12 pitch ball will have small type, used in 10 pitch setting the printed type will spread out,
      10 pitch ball will have larger type, used in 12 pitch setting the printed type will crowd, the letter M will touch itself

      Others have noises, vibrations, clicks, etc. I would have to hear it to tell you if it was normal

    Very nice! I have a Correcting Selectric II, very similar to this one. I believe mine is from 1976. How would I go about fixing the return? When you press return, it indexes the platen, but only moves back so far. Not all the way to the edge of the paper...

    • @phoenixtypewriter2136
      @phoenixtypewriter2136  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most likely a sticky latch gummed up from the old oil coagulating. Could be operational shaft cams are not pushing the mechanism far enough to latch up. Could also be the margin rack out of adjustment. Could be the tab not disengaging, over-riding the latch up process. Could be couple other things. No simple answer.

      Look for the obstruction/troubleshoot, check the lower operational covers for warpage,
      check the tabulator rack for errant tab stop, check the main spring for loose tension,
      check the feed roller clearance, check the right transport pulley

    Can you please help? I’m in the U.K. (so can’t really get to you!), with an IBM 196c which has a problem: the carriage will not move on after typing a letter. It moves freely to the right and left after a carriage return but just won’t move one letter space at a time. Same when I hit the space bar. Do you have any suggestions as I think the last repair person in the U.K. has now retired…

      @@phoenixtypewriter2136 Thank you so much for replying so quickly. I'll post a couple of videos onto the resource you mention to try and answer the questions you've asked. I'm not sure what a space cam cycle is, but something definitely moves under the carriage when the space bar is pressed. I've videoed that. Also, it IS stuck in correction key mode, yes. And the tab does work, as does the carriage 'move to the right' key, and the carriage return. I've videoed that too. Hopefully someone might have an answer for me.

    When I type fast the letters get out of place and overlap. Would you happen to know what is causing that? I think I heard you mention the solution in one of your vids, but I can’t find it...Thanks for all your videos and tips.

    • @phoenixtypewriter2136
      @phoenixtypewriter2136  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      More trouble shooting would need to be done because multiple things can cause mis-prints. 1st is to analyze the mis-print, then clean inner ring of typeball, then clean & relube all rotate pulleys & make sure all is turning freely. Then make sure carrier is moving freely & keeping up with action. Also should check escapement rack make sure it's not hanging up there. Could be the interlocks are sticking. Could be the keyboard interposer trips are sticking. These IBM selectric need to be properly serviced & now-a days the old 30yr+ oils have coagulated & are causing slow response, which can cause mis-prints & strange behavior.

      @phoenixtypewriter2136  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Quick answer is bring it to a professional typewriter mechanic, Probably sticky, gummed up parts, Isolate and flush/clean
      Long answer is study the theory of operation of the IBM Selectric, get familiar with how it should work, then troubleshoot typewriter and clean and service and repair as needed, Btw this took me 10 years . . . . .

    Here's a question: I noticed a few keys, such as the "1" key, have four or five symbols. Seeing as there appears to only be a "shift" key, and no other "modifer" keys, how do you use those?

    • @phoenixtypewriter2136
      @phoenixtypewriter2136  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      IBM would have different balls, usually 4, that would have different set of symbols. The key-tops on most selectric II were universal & listed several per effected key-top. If you ordered a Selectric 1 with a type ball with special symbols the machine would be fitted with corresponding key-tops to match. Some selectric 2's were also delivered with only the matching key-tops when order with special type ball. Selectric 3's added 8 characters to the type ball thus eliminating this some, but they still had mutable choices also. I have a IBM type chart that shows the type style & the different part numbers associated with each special symbol-ed balls. BTW, right below the plastic piece that you pry open on the type element to change it is a 3 digit code for that balls exact style. I will try to add the chart to the end of the video.

    • @phoenixtypewriter2136

      IBM selectrics can make a variety of noises, rattles, clicks & thumps. I would have to hear it clearly & then I could tell you, usually exactly, what is wrong & what it needs to get it repaired. Without regular maintenance those selectrics occur compound problems too. I'm in Phoenix, I know of at least 50 typewriter shops across the USA that could service your machine, what part of the country are you in ?
