    We have a selectric 2 in for a motor belt job, original belt failed after 40 years, go figure......here is the procedure for that. Same procedure works on selectric 1 , 2's & 3's. This is our first attempt at filming this & we will probably do another in the near future hoping for a better end result. This is a complicated repair since it usually involves re-timing of the operations shafts. Only takes about 50 times before you can do them really proficiently. Machine got a general clean & service afterwards.

    Fixed all kinds of IBM field equipment in my territory in Iowa in the 70's. When ever I replaced a drive belt I always put a second belt in so that if the belt breaks I can replace it quickly by just finessing the second belt around the gear and done. I would just let the second belt hang loose around the shaft. Never had a problem doing so and this becomes a five minute repair.

      If I see an IBM with a second belt sitting there ready to go, I will know that this might have been one you had your hands on back in the day & thank you in the process !

    Thanks for the nostalgic return to my early career at IBM. Spent 15 years there, starting out in the Office Products Division. I loved working on these mechanical marvels. They were simply the finest typewriter made, till they came out with the first generation Electronic Selectrics. those were horrible machines...

    • @Dave52732
      @Dave52732 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Wheelwriters were an answer to the Electronic Selectrics, they were the last generation of typewriters produced by IBM/Lexmark. The Wheelwriters used a daisy print disk, while the Electronic Selectrics used the same golf ball printheads that the Selectric III's used. At the time the Wheelwriters were introduced, IBM also pioneered some thermal printing technology, that was utilized in the Quietwriter...

      You're right, I'm sure I put that back on afterwards. That piece is to keep operational shaft from backing up, it's also a good way to eyeball one of the time procedures. That's one of only a few parts you can take off an IBM Selectric & unit will still work 100%.

    I bought a Selectric II at an auction about 30 years ago to use in my office. Plugged it in and did not turn on so it sat in my basement forgotten for all these years. I recently rediscovered it and got it back working thanks to your videos!
    Curious tho, could you clean and mark the gear orientation with say a sharpie so a guy would not have to fiddle with the timing after reassembly?

I've said below other videos from you that I was training at the plant in Lexington, KY in 1966 but life took me away from IBM only a few months at my first post. But, now, I want to be able to work on Selectrics again and you are awakening the brain cells. Thank you. Where do you get the belt? It looks new. Is my future spent on eBay trying to find parts?

    I was an IBM Customer Engineer. Rather than resting the weight of the typewriter on a screwdriver to hold it down, a method that could cause damage, the proper method is to pull the bail down and then insert a thin shaft thru the lower screw hole of the side bearing to hold it down. A good thin shaft is a Bristo wrench.

    I recently got a hold of a black IBM Selectric II correcting. It came from a Humvee plant and was put in service in '77. It even has a AMC property logo attached to it. A neat collectors item I must admit. But upon powering it up I learned it had a burnt belt. It seems something is binded, and the gear shaft doesn't move well. Then again this whole thing is going to need degreasing. I thought about just spraying it down with wd40. Expensive way to go but I don't want to use water on the assembly. But the grease is just plain old. It's not lubing anything. Anyway thank you for a video on this topic. I heard this would be hard.

    Hi Duane,
    Thank you for the excellent videos!
    I finally freed up my recently-acquired 'stuck' SELECTRIC II, and once it was operating, the ball/ ribbon carrier made one complete circuit ( traveling left to right and returned) and then the drive belt lost a few cogs. it sounded so 'sweet' during that cycle that I have to fix it. I wish that I lived in or near Phoenix , as I would just bring it into your shop for repair & service. I am a bit concerned about the quality of some of the replacement drive belts that are available. Have you experienced any brands that should be avoided?
    I will check out the condition of the center hub when I go to install the new drive belt. If it is bad, I am considering 'biting the bullet' and buying the aluminum center hub pulley from the dealer on eBay. The typewriter was given to me, and so far my only expense has been to invest in an IBM SELECTRIC hand cycle crank tool.

    I would suggest a new cycle clutch spring after cleaning the old shaft clamps plus a new motor clutch, as they wore out on a regular basis, also the mylar shim wore like god knows what, resulting in the flutter sound while turned on.

    • @phoenixtypewriter2136
      @phoenixtypewriter2136  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just acquired a SR101, low mileage near mint machine, but it's hermetically sealed & stored at the moment. I know the belt is the same, centrifugal clutch looks different but I believe is interchangeable but might need the matching IBM pulley. Motors are same but the mounts might have to be changed with each motor. If I remember the SR101 had a heavy duty retainer clip compared to the small thin IBM retainer, I used some of those HD retainers on some IBM's .

      IBM Selectric could live on for a long time, now at the 30 - 40 year mark durability has proven itself. Looks like the center hub is biggest issue & sticky-ness from old oils. Still a great go-to typewriter that is right at home doing "Odd" jobs like filling in forms, blanks, labels, shipping stuff, 2 part invoices, envelopes etc etc. Selectric is user friendly, easy to set margins, roll paper in & thru with 2 platen knobs & a variable, nice clear card guide/holder to line things up easy, cheap ribbons & nostalgia to boot !!

      Yes, nostalgia and aesthetics. I'm sure I remember seeing a Selectric at my primary (elementary) school when I was 8. And more recently, the Selectric features heavily in the plot of the Fargo TV Series.

    my carriage is frozen on the left side, the motor runs fine. Also I can no longer get my 1/2 spacer to work. Can you let me know what you think I need to do to get it running again.Thanks

    • @phoenixtypewriter2136
      @phoenixtypewriter2136  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Multiple things could be the problem, does it type? does ball strike paper? does backspace work? does shift turn ball? was it working recently? what happens when you press tab? I haven't seen anyone use 1/2 spacer in decades, a lot of selectrics don't even have a 1/2 space lever, must just be disconnected. my estimates are free while you wait & watch (5 minutes). basic repairs start at $48.00.

    • @phoenixtypewriter2136
      @phoenixtypewriter2136  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Induction electric motor runs the typewriter, without it machine is useless
      Motor turns the operational shafts at a precise RPM, everything is triggered from that.
      All the cam's, clutches, drive train Etc. You can turn operational shafts with a hand cycle tool, but only 1/20 speed

      @@phoenixtypewriter2136 Is it possible to replace the electric motor with a torsion spring motor where the potential energy in the spring is stored and then released in the form of movement, provided that the motor is well manufactured?

    If you can afford the $48 or so, let a guy with experience do it. You should be careful not to nick the tilt and rotate ‘tapes’ (actually steel bands), for these will break easily when damaged.

      At least clean it and grease the Cycle clutch, also check the basic tilt and rotate adjustments and timing. There is a stud on the side of the carrier you can use to line up the print shaft groove with. The amount of time it takes to change the clutch when the cycle shaft is out is minimal.

    Probably the cowboy way of doing this, not the correct way. The cycle clutch pulley should have been replaced did anyone see the huge crack in it, the gears should have been adjusted for the correct backlash and then re-timed, the belt tension should have been adjusted. You can download the adjustment guide for free from the internet, why not follow the IBM manual and do it correctly.

    • @phoenixtypewriter2136

      I like that description, Cowboy way ! Trained by IBM personal, my Business partner was an IBM trainer, so I know the IBM way. Never said this was the IBM way, in fact most my videos doing serious repairs I state it's not the IBM way, it's my way (Cowboy). BTW the Hub Pulley has been replaced with reinforced metal ring years ago & Robert Fallin, cycle clutch was reversed/replaced then too, mistake was not replacing belt then. Being this is a Noncorrecting, I'm sure that customer was under budget limitations. Cowboy Up !

      @Zahn1nz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Problem is...if you do it the right way, stripping the shaft, replacing the cycle clutch pulley, loosening all the pulleys, then doing all the adjustments, the average joe watching this video won't be able to follow it, without the right tools, hooverometer, etc..etc. Don't get me wrong, its great to see them still working, and great to see you passing on knowledge that people can follow. I was an IBM (trained) tech and worked on them for over 10 years until they were replaced with the electronics. Always amazed me how complex they were with, interlocks on almost everything.

      Some very valid points you make. Got to be a very small amount of amateurs who would try this even the Cowboy way. Lots of people think it's like changing a vacuum belt ! And yes the mechanical selectric's are so different from any other standard typewriter that it does require a different skill set.
