First, thanks for the video! Second, After a couple decades and a dozen+ machines, I eventually adopted an old Royal Arrow as my edc weapon of choice. I've been using it exclusively for 5 or so years. I bought an aftermarket "universal" ribbon that adapts to various machines, but only on the bottom side of the cassette. The ribbon only goes counter-clockwise. Thinking how I didn't want to unwind and respool the ribbon, I thought, perhaps it's time to do a search and see if I'm missing some info. Rather than the push-button hood latch on the left side of the face, there is a selector switch. I buy my machines used at garage sales and thrift stores, so when that switch seemed to do nothing, I assumed it to be broken. Sonuvabitch, "Ribbon Reverse, right here" 1:01. That switch wasn't broken. It is the ribbon reversal selector!

I'm servicing mine soon and want to replace the belt. What size is the perfect O ring though? Do they not make belts the same size as the OEM? Seems like they should be available for another machine...?

I have a Smith Corona Clipper, and it looks pretty much identical. 🙂 It's in great working condition and is one of my favorite typewriters. I forgot how to change the ribbon, and your video was a big help!

I just received one in a very nice condition, and I really love the type action on it. I'm just wondering if the silent return spring is not working on mine, or did these not have that particular mechanism? Based on your video and a couple of others, it seems like the answer is that they did not have a silent return spring. Not a big deal, but would be nice to know for sure.

Seeing those hands, fine surgery is not the first that comes to mind. But will you look at that... Bravo, maestro!

I replaced the paper release lever on my Quiet-Riter but this looks a lot more involved. I found an electronics TH-camr for how to deal with the E clip.

Thanks so much. I was cleaning one up and fixing the "little things" and thought I was toward the end . But, Hitting the shift key didn't move the carriage I was cleaning the pivot on the arm where it would go behind the scenes with minimal results. So, I decided to let my fingers do the walking and punched you up. I'm glad I did. You are a societal treasure! Thanks again.

I have a Remington that was the opposite situation, way too much tension. I let out 2 turns, cured its skipping problem. Someone had really dialed up the tension, why, I do not know. My wife’s 1960 5-Sterling feels really stiff to me too but it isn’t causing any issues other than have to push harder than usual on return.

Have you any idea where I could find those benders? I've been looking, but cannot find anything.

Good stuff. I ruined my first typewriter with that issue. Broke the shaft. Now it’s useless. It’s a paperweight because of the damn plastic shaft! 🤬

Hrm. Rare moment here for me: I will disagree with "make life simpler". How many times have you turned a typewriter over and spilled the ribbon spools? Seems that these are good for that, but I recall seeing a number of these where one half had broken off and the remnant was just annoying after that.

Don’t you just squeeze them?

Granted, it is a very poor design. I think that removal of the spool was meant to involve the pinching of the two nodules together with finger tips making the removal possible. Several of my SCM's have broken nodules anyway. Steel posts after the mid-sixties on SCM's varied from year to year and model to model. There is really no explanation as to why that is. BTW a wire cutter might work better.

They should have done what other vendors did and put a chromed cover plate up front and pins and rear screws below so it isn't removable without considerable deliberate effort.

aaaah thanks!!! my exact issue. removed the motor, oiled it up with sewing machine oil (great stuff). no more screeching loud squeak. for those wondering, i'm using MS word. margins are set to top:0" bottom:0" left:0.5" right:1.0" font ARIAL (because it goes by a scale) and size 16. anything more/less than this will result in words overlapping. there is probably a more formal way to format/set everything, there is no reference out there.. especially with modern word processors on win10. this is the best setting. my printers all died at once (laser, inkjet, etc) that's what i get for skimping... pulled out my wheelwriter and voila, fully printed documents for a last minute mailing. yes, they are refusing email, i guess even these companies are old school.
