How do I take the old ribbon out is it screw down?

Trying to fix a Sadler which is in a plastic case - much harder to access the draw string 😢

People had to be smarter back then, by the 1950s they were dumbing down the ribbon carriers.

The motor in my 220 does not look that fresh, maybe that explains why it has a hard time starting up. Other than the motor needing TLC machines like the one here are wonderful additions to any collection.

I bought this model for $50 and just had it all restored- for a lot more!!! I'm just starting to type with it.

Looking at a KMG on marketplace, no ribbon in the machine, can't tell if it has the spools. Will ask the seller. Ribbons Unlimited sells the spools but they cost more than the machine. At least on a Remington you can get by without the special cores...I have 4 machines but only 3 sets of cores.

I have one that types great, but it has a few glitches. Whenever I simply press the backspace button it locks up! And then when I press the return button after that it bugs out!

So on that angle. (For those who might be wondering.) It occurs to me that, whatever it is, the way to tell you have it right is that after the link is connected to the type bar and the sub lever and the type bar reinstalled, that the link should sit relaxed, without any tension or torsion, and be free to move just a little bit. Without examining a unit, I wouldn't be able to stay if they are different all around, but the object would seem to be the same. Good show! That rebuilt typewriter makes for an interesting addition to any collection.

Believe it or not, as an old typewriter repairman myself, the truth is the IBM Selectric was Remington's own design to begin with...but, Remington couldn't make it as reliable as it needed to be, and subsequently, IBM bought the design and tweaked it just enough to make the great IBM Selectric the best electric typewriter ever made! The tweaking had to with metallurgy...IBM engineers figured out through various hardness and softness of certain contact areas of the design is what gave the machine's timing what it needed to run without erratic timing issues that caused reliability issues ... the Remington SR101 was better than Remington's original design, but IBM never did give Remington their metallurgy formulas and to be honest, the Remington SR101 was not as a good a machine as the IBM version! Although, the parts were interchangeable, so that could make the SR101 more reliable using IBM parts ...believe it or not!

Decades ago I took child to Doctor for unremembered reason, at the end of the treatment the nurse handed me the locking hemostat they used saying they throw them away after one use. Wonder where I put those, they would be handy.

Regal Rebuilt Royals carry a "Y" prefix, with "SY" segment shift, and "CSY" Chrome segment shift. Serial number is restarted at 100,000 each year, and completely replaces the older serial. A "close to" original manufacture serial number (and thus, the approximate original manufacture date) can be found on the left side of the frame, painted over. Example: Y35-107833 is a Carriage Shift model, the 7833rd machine rebuilt by Regal in 1935. This one is a Model KH, Y-40 (Rebuilt in 1940)

I bought a Royal Arrow at a garage sale for $25. It’s pretty perfect. I greased it up with WD40 which I later learned gumes up after a while. However after listening and following your instructions on loading the new ribbon it still won’t drop down in the center there where you look to see what you have typed. Doesn’t seem to be a mechanism to grease to lubricate. What’s up?

Hmmm... So, thinking about this, my conclusion is that he is prematurely typing before and after shift. That would mean his technique isn't exactly correct. However, the lag in the time he hits the shift key and the time the mechanism responds does come into play when you get to extremes and he might have been right on the edge with this machine. Looks like you took maybe 10-12 loops out. Wondering if 3-4 might have been sufficient (and thus easier to re-install!) Installing springs at odd angles is a royal PITA!

That's an early 1958, 1957, or 1956 with the white "Electric" logo. They changed to red mid 1958. I have two of them myself I found in the PNW the past six months. And one has a shift issue. I push down the shift key and it goes down, but sometimes pops back up even though I keep the shift key down. It happens more, for some reason, on the left shift key. I still haven't sorted it, but was guessing it was a weak solenoid or shift mechanism. Thanks for details...gonna look at making me a new rubber stopper!

Do you have a video on tilt adjustments? I have a 111 . Tilt ring was broken like this but types off after repair. First row of keys types okay middle isn’t great bottom is trash.

I have a model P-134 which is very similar but has a round speaker grill rather than rectangular. Mine also has a switch to choose tape speed (2.4 or 1.2) to the right of the CONF - DICT at 0:50, and an additional button to the left of the LED at 0:28. IDK what either of those buttons do, both have icons that look like designed by Klingons. Issued by my company around 1985, but no longer works. Beautiully made though, better than the Philips.

Fun one I'm working on is recovering the escapement rocker bracket that fell off its pivot points, as it's jammed in there, on my SCM Galaxie Deluxe, all that extra linkages in the way thanks to the power space, I dare not touch the plastic adjustment coil in fear it'll just disintegrate. Probably no fixing that if it does, so in my strange game of operation I see one lock nut for the pivot is missing!!!! I pick the machine up and out of curiosity I give it a few shakes and I hear a small rattle, I set the machine down and go hunting. Wasn't until I gave up picked the machine up to put it away and there, low and behold on the table was that lock nut, thankfully I can make the repair, if I can get it out of the jammed place it's found itself on the right if the machine was upside-down and the keys were facing your chest. Also very thankful the star wheel is not broken or missing any teeth. Just need to line it up and get it back in place. Also discovered this when I went to clean it, it was skipping, the bad, then super worse, so I thought it was dirty. Just wish I looked sooner, a lesson well learned. Great video!! Especially the little known tricks with the half-space lever. I had a noobish question I can't seem to find the answer to anywhere: Is a backing sheet needed/recommended on these machines? The instruction manual doesn't seem to specify either way; and what little info I can find seems to be contradictory, with some sources claiming it's a good idea to use one with all typewriters and others claiming that those with more advanced mechanisms such as the Selectric and Wheelwriter/daisy wheel machines are an exception. Any help would be much appreciated!

This is identical to my Remette. Mine just came disconnected from the carriage end. Just needs to be reconnected. I put in 5 turns, seems too strong. The string is old and brittle so when I replace it will use 4 turns. No easy way to relieve tension on these machines.

Do you recommend using a high test fishing line as main spring line replacement or ordering an official one?

I have a question Mr. Phoenix. I have a Future 800 that loves to skip. I believe it’s the escapement. How do I adjust the escapement, I see no obvious adjustment points unless I’m not looking in the right place, or do I have to take the carriage off to make the adjustments?

Wow it's like you knew what I was searching for just recently! I've got a Classic 12 that often doesn't space when typing but only before the 10 mark on the margin measure. same thing happened to me. I found that if this machine is taken apart and the panels are removed (many pieces), they have to be put back together snug and aligned and harmonized back into the exact same position or that rectangle hole where the cover goes is misaligned in a slightly different positions and this happens. fun.

These are such great machines! They speak really well to the service tech and tell you exactly where they hurt!
